I'm a lawyer, and I've only been doing this since November (when I was sworn in) and already I'm thinking this isn't for me! It's terrible because I work for my Dad and it is his lifelong dream that I work with him and while it's great to be so close to him all the time I'm not the fighter that I thought I was and I think I'd rather do something more positive. I have no idea what my ideal job would be, though "heiress" sounds pretty great ;) I think I'll give this at least another year to see if I grow into it! Actually, scratch that, my Dad just stepped into my office and said I should go watch him argue a brief I wrote. He's an incredibly talented attorney, hugely respected by lawyers in this town, a hero to many, and a devoted and loving father who is SO proud of me! And he's arguing my brief! In 20 minutes! I have GOT to quit bitching about my job, this is a dream for so many young lawyers! |

| Fitness | You can't build muscle with a deficit, so why am I lifting weights? | Jun 18 2009 15:30 (UTC) |

These responses are fantastic, and SO informative. I definitely will keep lifting weights. I'd heard the bit about bone density before and I've always believed that it is good for my health I just didn't know *why*, especially when I am trying to create a deficit. Now, another question, since you are all so knowlegeable! People say low weight high reps are not effective - why? And low rep higher weights are effective - why? And what constitutes either? If I can do 15-20 reps at a particular weight, is this high rep or low rep? Should I be shooting for exhaustion at 2 reps? 5 reps? 10 reps? I can't tell you how much I appreciate your answers. There are so many well-informed people on this website, it is such an excellent source for information! Thank you! |

My heart broke for you reading that! Get out and get on with your life. You're young and fun and beautiful and too good to be treated this way. He is abusing you! I understand that it will feel like the hardest thing in the world but you've just got to do it! Get out and don't look back! |

| It makes a huge difference to me too. it doesn't matter whether I've gained 15 pounds or lost 1 my mom tells me everyday that I look fantastic, "so slim!" I love it when she says it but I really can't take it as true. If someone at work, or an acquaintance were, however, to tell me I looked "slim" I'd be over the moon! Congrats on the weight loss! | |||

| I try to stay away from diet sodas too and I have grown to really love vodka soda(maybe a little too much). Its just vodka and soda water (carbonated water) and with a slice of lemon or lime it is so refreshing and tasty and I actually think it might keep me hydrated (a little at least). Good luck! | |||

1. End the chub-rub for good! 2. be light enough that my boyfriend can lift me up...and be smaller than him by at least 10 pounds (anything closer is just too close). 3. (thanks wannabehot) - believe my friends when they tell me that I look good! 4. end foot/knee/back/general pain and feel forever LIGHTER 5. wear seriously 'body-concious' clothing and not feel like I am just barely pulling it off but that I am rocking it 6. in my distant future...I want to be a thin, gorgeous, and healthy bride and mother Edit: Thanks for starting this thread, it is such good and positive motivation. Reading everyone's "uncommon reasons" got me to put a donut down, and that takes SERIOUS effort most of the time. |

| Motivation | Goal: To Just Be Average | Nov 27 2007 18:47 (UTC) |

| I was heavy all through my childhood, high school, and much of college. What you say was almost exactly what I was always telling myself - I just want to be normal! Average! I don't even want to be "thin"! I lost about 40 pounds when i was a junior in college, getting down to 165, somewhere near "normal"and I was overjoyed. Even while I was losing weight I felt so good, even at 180 I felt that if my weight loss stopped I would be happy because I was finally normal-looking. Now that I have been down around 165 for a few years (about 5) I realize that I would be much healthier and happier at the weight on my driver's license (which, embarrassingly, I blew past somewhere in the 5th grade) - 145. Being "normal" for a few years has certainly changed my perspective, but being "normal" is good for me, and when I was bigger this really was all I ever wanted. I don't know whether this answers your question, or if anything can, but its the view of another person who was fat from the start. | |||

| Hello! I'm 5'9 and weigh 161. I was 169 when I started this and my goal is 145 (for now) but all these girls at 5'9 and 130 and under make me very curious about what that might look like on me. I have "body" shots on my profile, they're not great but they're there. Hooray for tall girls! I love it!Edit: as far as frame goes, I always thought I was large but according to the "wrist test" i'm actually small...or I have long fingers. | |||
| Calorie Count | Not adding up sedentary burn meeter and added excercised properly | Nov 15 2007 17:36 (UTC) |

| It is normal. the 1640 takes into account all kinds of normal life-sustaining "activities" and when you replace the time that those activities take up (however long it took you to burn the 422) the calories those 'activities' burned are replaced with the calories that you burned through exercise. Say, by example, that you burned 422 in one hour, your daily calorie burn would benormal burn x23 hours =1538exercise burn x1 hour= 422 total: 1960 I don't think that I explained that very well...I hope that it makes sense. |

I REALLY don't want to do what I did last year and gain 10lbs between thanksgiving and new years...I'm just now finishing losing that...so I plan on being pretty good, keep up my exercise and not going back for seconds. The problem is that I will be in South Africa visiting my family for three weeks over X-Mas. I don't like calling this a problem because I love going there and love seeing my family but the food that my family cooks is ungodly fattening and there is really no escaping it...and little by way of exercise. I'll just see if I can do without gaining 10# again! Great thread! Good luck everyone! |

| Weight Loss | Exercising or Dieting: Which One is Easier? | Nov 09 2007 17:32 (UTC) |

Exercise is much easier for me. It feels good and I can feel progress. Dieting on the other hand is very hard for me. I hate that in one horrible hour I can ruin a whole days work! With exercise, not exercising for an hour is no big deal, I can still do it later - no such thing with dieting! |

| Recipes | Easy Shirataki Tofu noodle recipes?? (that are super low in calories?) | Nov 05 2007 19:47 (UTC) |

I love shiritaki noodles and eat them quite regularly. I eat them in a few different ways: - the easiest is just to prepare them according to the package and then put them in a big bowl with a can of diced or stewed tomatoes, some spinach, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and hot pepper and put it in the microwave for a few minutes. If you use an entire can of tomatoes it still comes out under 200 calories. - it is also really good with regular pasta sauce, microwaved. - if you want to use a little more time, you can make a real homemade pasta sauce with tomatoes, garlic, cayenne or red pepper, basil, oregano or whatever you like with some morningstar 'meat' crumbles if you like a bolognese. Add your shiritaki to this and it usually comes out under 300 calories for the whole package and a lot of sauce. enjoy! |

| Mine has said 145 since I got it when I was 16. I didn't weigh 145 then, and have weighed up to 200 since then...I'm down to 165 and still don't plan on changing it. I will be so excited if/when I can say that my license tells the truth for the first time! | |||

| Fitness | Joining a fitness class while being overweight.... | Oct 19 2007 21:05 (UTC) |

I think that classes are great, especially for people who aren't totally familiar with the gym and don't have a trainer or personal work out routine. The instuctor will help you get your form right and you will be pushed to do exercises that you may be too apprehensive or unsure of to do on your own. I go to weight classes at my gym because I don't trust myself to do a real workout in the weight room, if I'm alone I just lie down to do situps and hang out on the mat, flopping around. It doesn't matter how big or small you are, classes are a great way to get started and keep your workout exciting and your weight loss moving! And, if everyone in there is abs-of-steel-crack-a-nut-with-your-butt fit it must work, right? |

| Fitness | Burn 500 calories the fastest... | Oct 19 2007 20:55 (UTC) |

It depends on what you hate the least... About 40 minutes at a moderate-high effort on the elliptical should do it, or 35 minutes running relatively fast (8-9 minute miles), or a step class. Are you planning on lifting weights? Lean muscle will help you lose weight though moderate weight lifting doesn't burn as many calories/hour as aerobic activities. There are tools on this cite which will tell you exactly how many calories you can expect to burn while doing any number of activities. Good Luck! |

| I LOVE shiritaki noodles. I eat them all the time. Be careful though, if you're not used to a high-fiber diet they may lead to some discomfort. I haven't suffered any discomfort (aside from being a little...ahem...windy) but I've heard that some people do get stomach aches. Hungrygirl.com has many many recipies for these noodles. I reccomend them with things like marinara or bolognese made with morningstar crumbles and hot pepper - yum! enjoy! | |||

| Weight Loss | personalities look different with weight loss? | Oct 19 2007 17:29 (UTC) |

| I think it does make a difference in confidence, which is a huge part of one's personality. I was big in highschool and college and started losing weight when I was 19. Even though I was still bigger than all my friends all of a sudden I came out of the corner, had some confidence and was more fun, outgoing and desirable. Gaining confidence made a huge difference in who I am and whenever I'm feeling fat and just want to hide away I make a concious effort not to fall back into the corner. I think that my added confidence shows in pictures (maybe even the ones that I have on here, it takes guts to be THAT happy). | |||
