Ahh yes, Ted Drewes! They put a place called Fro Yo in the loop. It's got a lot of fat free/reduced sugar options and it's self serve. I like it. |

I usually plan the workout to where i'll be finished around the time of my mid morning snack, so roughly 10AM, if I can help it. I eat breakfast before the workout, wait an hour, workout then make the shake and a regular lunch at lunchtime. If I'm working out before work I eat breakfast right after the workout. So yeah, It's simply my post workout shake and I continue on with a regular lunch and dinner. I don't use it as a meal replacement or anything. |

| Fitness | The first week back after the week off.. | Aug 30 2009 13:39 (UTC) |

I was reading NROL from the library a little bit ago because they didn't have NROLFW and there was a scheduled break week after the break-in program. I had been weight lifting for roughly 8-9 months previous to picking up the book with routines I'd make up for myself but never took a significant break from weight lifting in that time period. Before that I was all about hard cardio 7 days a week and some lifting a few days a week. Man I'm glad i'm out of that mode. Anyway, this was for about 2.5 years straight with no real break in the routine. After that break week I was freaking itching to get down to the basement and start again. It was great to get back into it. The week off just confirmed that I really enjoy the act of weight lifting and how it makes me feel. I'll do another week off for sure. I myself didn't get that sore, though. |

| Fitness | Why do guys grunt while lifting? | Aug 27 2009 19:19 (UTC) |

I would think the same thing when I went to the gym. Even if I felt an uncontrollable urge to make even the slightest sound I would try my damndest not to because I didn't want any attention drawn to me. There was one particular group of 2-3 men that just irked the **** out of me every morning I was there. They were constantly grunting and it was about 5AM so it was pretty much me and them in the weight room. It put me in a bad mood. ...then I started lifting at home, by myself in the basement and have caught myself doing it! AHH! oh well, no one else can hear it. |

Original Post by jsattelmaier: King Diamond is most definitely metal! And I figured they'd be pushing the new album but that's ok, it should still be a good show. That's cool you were in a Maiden cover band. We have one here called "Maiden America" and they're actually really freaking good. |

Original Post by jsattelmaier: Queensryche will be coming through St. Louis on Halloween and I'm super excited. I'm sure they're going to play a lot of stuff from American Soldier but of course I hope they play some older stuff (op mindcrime, warning..etc.). And yes to Maiden and Manowar. Most excellent for sure. |

Metal as well: Rhapsody, Iron Maiden, Manowar, Queensryche (I'm not talking about Silent Lucidity, although I do like that song), Blind Guardian, Amon Amarth and a lot of Helloween.

| Fitness | Building ab definition | Jul 25 2009 12:50 (UTC) |
|
Yeah, I absolutely loathe ab exercises such as crunches in any of its variations but I certainly have some definition and can pretty much attribute that to weight lifting exercises. As vyperman suggested: squats, dead lifts and so on. Anything that forces you to naturally stabilize your core has worked for me. 100 sit ups on the floor are just insane as far as I'm concerned. I'm reading New Rules of Lifting and the entire section focused on the core utilizes workouts that involve the swiss ball. They make your muscles work harder because you have to stabilize yourself and the movement. So swiss ball crunches, reverse crunches, etc. Try doing a dumbbell press on a swiss ball and you'll feel the core muscles working pretty hard as well. Like I said, ab workouts basically make me cringe so I have found something I do like (weight lifting) to kind of make up for it. |

| Fitness | The HIIT thread - Post all questions, routines, and experiences here | Jul 23 2009 14:01 (UTC) |

I do HIIT on the stairmaster at my gym right now. Warm up for 5 minutes at a level of 5-7, run up the stairs at a level of 18-20 for 30 seconds , cool down at level 1-2 (super slow) for about 90 seconds or until I'm not dying, do this back and forth until the clock hits 25 minutes and then cool down until 30 minutes. I think I'm doing this correctly. I don't have a heart rate monitor but I'm pretty damn beat afterwards and the workout in its entirety is about 30 minutes. If anyone has any tips or recommendations about using the stairmaster for HIIT, that'd be awesome. Also, the other day I was being my usual impatient self and went to the gym to do this on an empty stomach at 5:30AM knowing damn well my energy levels wouldn't be as good as if I had eaten something. I was right. For me personally, I have to eat a decent meal at least an hour before I go and do this. It wasn't that way for steady state cardio. I could go for an hour and just deal with it but this stuff is pretty intense. What do you guys eat beforehand? I didn't read the entire thread so this may have been asked already. Also, I can't believe I used to sit on the elliptical for an hour or more everyday. |

| The Lounge | Should I spend $$$ to go back to school? | Apr 22 2009 17:12 (UTC) |

I say yes. I am at almost the exact point in my life but I got a job in my field and have been so jaded by design and print (dying industry) and the pay. I have no passion for what I thought I wanted to do for the rest of my life. It is a horrible feeling. I am at the point where the prospect of making more money outweighs absolute job satisfaction. I recently decided to apply for grad school to get either my MBA with an emphasis in HR Management or simply a Masters in HR Management. I researched the job market through the government's occupational outlook handbook and landed on HR. Job prospects look nearly as great as the healthcare industry. Have you considered HR? It may not be exactly what you're looking for but the jobs are there and you'd get to deal with employee grievances, amongst other things. I worked in HR during college and remembered I actually enjoyed it..at least enough. And that's what matters to me right now. Enjoy it enough, make more money. One thing I have heard in regards to studying nutrition is that the field is very saturated right now. I'm not sure if it has become a recent trend or not but my bestfriend's sister in law got her degree in nutrition and found it really hard to find jobs within hospitals because that seems to be the most desired position. www.bls.gov/oco/ocos077.htm there is a link from the government website in regards to jobs in the nutrition field. And I hear you about the economy but to be honest I am quite sick of getting beat over the head with "Well, at least you have a job." Well, it's simply not good enough for me anymore. And I have to do what I need to in order to improve my quality of life and I think you should too. I've already got loans out and I know I'll be piling more on top of those but I can't sit idly by in the comfort of what my life is right now. I went to school so I didn't have to live paycheck to paycheck. And also, if you do go ahead with the MBA and aren't completely in love with what you do to pay the bills you could always volunteer to help people in your free time, right? Hope this helps. I know it's a long response! |

| Fitness | treadmill vs. elliptical | Mar 21 2009 19:22 (UTC) |

I've been using them more lately because of bad ankle and knee pain. I can't speak for random fitness forums claiming that ellipticals are "bad" and I'm not sure in what way. I won't dispute it but I will say I get one hell of a work out from it and I'm not limping around my apartment when I wake up because I ran on a treadmill/outside in my crappy shoes. I do hope to get back to running outside. I really enjoy it but I need to go and get fitted for some good shoes since I'm positive this is where a lot of my pain comes from. |

Original Post by amayou82: ha, i see a lot of stuff at the gym that i hate....i was sort of indifferent towards that though and true! but it seems like if you're doing HIIT then it might be redundant to stop it and start it over and over again...like, it might be more convenient for people to just be able to jump right back into the same speed without waiting for it to climb and maybe that's why they do it? I don't know...

EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!! no, i'm kidding.....I could probably do that since it's essentially the same thing but I don't want to stop it completely because it'll probably delete the progress (time, distance), right? |

I make my own veggie burgers using my small food processor. I just process the variety of vegetables I want, salt, pepper and garlic powder and use plain rolled oats and egg subsitute or egg white as a binder then brown it on a skillet using non stick spray. They're awesome. I never buy them anymore. |

I eat fat free ice cream almost everyday. It's 90 calories per 1/2 cup and sometimes I'll only eat 1/4 a cup. My favorite right now is an apple and cinnamon warmed in the microwave then topped with a scoop of fat free vanilla ice cream. It tastes like apple pie.
so good. |

| Weight Loss | 1st alcoholic drink in 2 months causes 4lb. weight gain! | Nov 21 2007 20:37 (UTC) |

| I have stopped weighing myself everyday and will now do it once a week. I realized if I continue to do exactly what i am doing now the number will stay the same. I have weighed myself one day at 120 (my normal weight now) and the next day (AFTER drinking beer/mixed drinks all night) I weighed 118 and I am completely aware that I did not lose 2 lbs in one day. The next day I would be 122 but more often than not i weighed in at 120 exactly so I have vowed to stop stressing over numbers. It's just water weight and possibly how you're standing on it or if you have clothes on. one bloody mary did not cause a 4lb weight gain unless it was made with hamburger patties and butter....and even then, it probably wouldn't do that. |

My method has turned into picking something up and merely eyeballing the waist area and practically ignoring the size.. what the heck? |
