Foods Trying to Build Muscle - How does my lunch seem? Mar 28 2008
04:07 (UTC)
I'm also trying to build muscle.  My trainer gave me a diet plan, and it's pretty much all protein all the time.  Try some ground turkey and brown rice for lunch, 4oz of chicken, or even throw some nuts on your salad.  Don't be afraid of calories.  You can't build muscle without fat!

I try to eat a little bit every day!  My nutritionist has me eating some to get "good" fats.  I'll put 1/2 a small one on a grilled turkey sandwich - yum!

I'm very busy too, but instead of resorting to Lean Cuisines (which don't really fill me up and are loaded with sodium, which I'm trying to avoid), I just make all my food in the morning or the night before, then take it with me.  I'll pack a sandwich, chicken salad, or something like that.  Freeze your leftovers from dinner the night before and eat those instead!  Trust me, it'll be way more satisfying and much healthier!

I'm cutting sodium right now, too!  Just be conscious of your lables.  I eat a lot of chicken, which is loaded with sodium, and a lot of packaged sliced deli meats are bad, too.  As far as seasoning your food goes, go pick up some Mrs. Dash salt-free seasonings.  I also use something called (I think) Uncle Tim's salt-free creole seasoning.  It's AMAZING on anything!  Eggs, chicken, potatoes, you name it!  There are tons of low-sodium options out there, you just need to hit the grocery store.

I've been making healthy pizzas for a while now.  I'll either use English Muffin halves or a whole wheat pita.  With the pita, I usually forego the tomato sauce and spread it with fat free ricotta seasoned with some basil, oregano and salt.  Then I top it with spinach, broccoli, sauteed mushrooms, and some chicken if I'm in the mood!  Yummy!

I've been playing with ground turkey lately.  It's so good in chili or with brown rice!  Last night for dinner I made 4 1oz meatballs and put them on a 90cal hot dog bun with some spaghetti sauce and fat free cheese, popped it in the oven, and had a great meatball sub!!!  I'll definitely be making that again soon.

I also started making pulled chicken recipes.  Get a low-cal BBQ sauce (maybe because I'm Texan) and toss it with the pulled chicken, put it on a whole wheat bun and enjoy a pulled chicken BBQ sandwich!

New lunch fave: Turkey and avocado sandwich.  I usually warm up the turkey and grill the sandwich, it's delicious!

Oh honey I hear ya loud and clear.  My weaknesses: Raisins, dried apricots, dried pineapple.  So good!  Just make sure you're getting all natural ones, not ones coated in sugar.  Also, to help me control my portions, I get ones that are pre-packaged in single serving bags.  Get the small boxes of raisins, for example.  I also made a great discovery at my grocery store:  www.justtomatoes.com

I adore Almond Breeze in all its nutty glory.  I used to put a ton of Splenda in it, but I'm slowly starting to appreciate it straight up.  I usually use it in my cereal (with Splenda) and as a creamer for my coffee.  It's fabulous.
Foods Favourite Fillings... Feb 06 2008

Fat free yogurt tastes like sour cream, but I personally love f/f sour cream with some dill.  Simple, but filling!  Turkey meat w/ tomato sauce is also good.  Do you ever eat sweet potatoes?  I eat mine with Slpenda and cinnamon!

I LOVE MY NUTRITIONIST.  She knows I know what's right to eat and all that crap, but she caters each visit to me specifically knowing that I have an ED and all the fears that come along with it.  She works with me to develop a healthy relationship with food, and it's amazing.  I adore her.  It's TOTALLY worth it to at least check out, especially if insurance covers it!

My mom had to cut sodium recently, too.  She now uses a LOT of Mrs. Dash seasonings.  They give you that salty taste without ANY salt!  Go stock up on all the flavors!

1/2 C instant oatmeal with cinnamon and splenda and maybe some berries, 4 egg whites, and a protein shake after my workout.  Yum yum!  I LOVE breakfast!  And yes, it's usually different on the weekends.  I mix it alllll together and make a protein pancake!  Or sometimes I'll have some hot grape nuts, yum yum!

Did you get it iced?  If you did, you have to specifically ask to get it unsweetened or they'll dump a load of sugary sweetner in there.  If you got it hot, no need to worry.  They don't mess with that.  What kind did you get?  I'm a huge fan of the passion tea!

Foods What exactly is hummas? Jan 28 2008

Hummus is a paste-like spread made from chick peas.  It's pretty good, but I'm not a big fan.  It's good on pita chips or turkey wraps.  Couscous is a grain, kind of like rice.  It's REALLY delish, and you can make great cold salads with it or eat it hot.  Look up some recipes and try it!

LOVE the noodles!  I usually eat them with a little fat free sour cream with some dill or salt/pepper to make a creamy fettucinni sauce.  You could also toss them with chicken and spaghetti sauce!  I also like to use a bit of EVOO and basil to make a pesto and throw some chicken on there.  ALSO, try to pan fry them in low sodium soy sauce for a chinese noodle dish!  Best of luck!

I pound out a chicken breast and spread either Laughing Cow cheese or fat free sour cream on it, season with salt and pepper or whatever you want, then add spinach and asparagus and roll it up!  I put a skewer through it so it holds its shape and bake it at 350 for 30min or so.  You can get really creative with this.  I also like to squeeze some fresh lemon juice on it before throwing it in the oven!

I eat brown rice EVERY DAY!  I usually mix it with ground turkey meat and a little tomato sauce, then put it in a bell pepper for some delish stuffed peppers!

Also, if you make it with chicken broth instead of water, it comes out extra soft and moist.  I really love it with peas, sliced mushrooms, or black beans.  Just get creative in the kitchen!  It's so versatile, you just have to experiment!
Foods Help a Carb Eater!!! Jan 24 2008

The Honey Nut Cheerios are not going to stick with you.  Try 1/2 a cup of oatmeal instead!  Mix in some cinnamon and splenda (or a little honey) to satisfy the sweet tooth.  It'll hold you over.  Also, what kind of bread are you eating at lunch?  Read your lables and make sure you're getting something whole wheat/grain without any unenriched bleached flour in it.  Case in point - it's okay to eat carbs.  50% of your calories should come from them.  Just choose wisely so you're not starving by noon!  Also, try to encorporate fiber.  It helps fill you up.  (I put 2tsp of Benefiber in my oatmeal!)

I also agree with coco...you need protein!  I like egg whites (hard boil them and take them with you for lunch), turkey, and grilled chicken.  Almonds are also quite tasty.  Good luck!

I just steam them and either squeeze some fresh lemon juice over them and salt, or spritz them with some balsalmic vinigrette salad spritzer.  Tasty addition without ruining them with butter or oil.

I eat a lot of protein, and I get a lot of it from my Jay Robb protein powder, which is delicious!  Make a shake with unsweetened Almond Breeze and throw a banana in there.  Also, almonds are a great snack.  Do you eat a lot of soy?  I eat some Yves "chicken" and "beef" which are loaded with protein!

My dad has been having the same problem, and his doctor told him to do crunches every day.  I bought him a workout mat for his house and a nice ball and his back pain has improved a lot!  Try doing some core strengthening exercises and that should help.

I seriously hated fish until my boyfriend made me try it in Seattle.  I ate sushi (BIG deal), fresh salmon, fresh halibut, and fresh tuna.  I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I was on the coast, but I didn't hate it!  I'm still hesitant, but try getting the best and freshest fish you can find.

Fruits like apples, bananas and oranges, a baggie of almonds, box of raisins, anything like that.  I'm on campus all day with no break and usually pack a lunch box with a couple sandwiches and a few of these things.  Fruit is by far my favorite!
Foods Best Protein Bar or Portable Snacks? Jan 08 2008

I had this problem too while taking an LSAT class last semester.  The class was from 6-10.  Worst time ever.  If you want a delicious, filling protein bar, go for Think Thin.  The peanut butter flavors are the best.  They're 240 calories and a little high in fat, but it's worth it.  It's the only bar that actually fills me up, and there are 20g of protein!

Other than bars, I used to take sandwiches to my class.  Use whole grain bread to fill you up and hold you over, or sometimes I use a bagel.  You could also prepare a light pasta dish and put it in tupperware (whole wheat/tofu noodles with chicken and italian dressing is great served cold) or bring a salad packed with proteins like meat or nuts.

Hope that helps, and good luck with school!
