Weight Loss Is anyone 5"1? May 22 2007

Hello,

I am 5'1"-2" and currently weight 123lbs. My goal is 115lbs.

I traveled to Europe for 6 months from June-Dec 2006 and inadvertently lost 32 lbs! All from walking everywhere, eating fresh food from the markets and portion control. I did not have access to my vices there like vente soy chais. However, I did indulge in european chocolate. It was  a pleasant accident as I have always struggled with my weight. I was somewhere around 155-160 lbs when I left. I dropped 10 sizes.

After being home for a few months I started eating sweets and drove my car everywhere. Last month after the Easter candies I put on 5 lbs and that it how I ended up here.

I have 3 children and am 33years old.

Cheers,
Cecily

Vegan yogurt states on the label (I can not remember which yogurt company, probably Silk) that cultures are grown on non dairy sources.

What I do know is fo things like nutritional yeast which is high in Vitamin B12 is grown on molasses.

Thanks. I was concerned about the way our metabolism may change and how it could affect caloric use, etc.

Tofu cheesecake

I bet you can substutute the oil and margarine with some applesauce and salt. The sugar can be substituted with stevia, raw agave nectar, honey, brown rice syrup. I have made cheesecake before and have never used soymilk, only the tofu. SO I bet a lot of calories could be cut out. Maybe I'll tryi it and see.
Ingredients 2 cups (450g) silken tofu

1/3 cup (90mL) fresh lemon juice

1/4 cup (60mL) oil

1/4 cup (60g) margarine, melted

1 1/4 cup (250g) white sugar

1/2 tsp (3g) salt

1/4 cup (60mL) soy milk

Crumb crust for one cheesecake

Directions Preheat oven to 350°F (176.6°C). Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until very creamy. This may take awhile (add liquid at end only if needed to blend tofu). Pour into partially baked and cooled crust and bake for 30?40 minutes or until the cake is firm to a light touch in the middle. This may take longer than 40 minutes, depending on the kind of tofu used. If, at the end of 40 minutes the center is still fairly liquid, turn the oven heat down to 325°F (162.7°C) and cook for another 10 minutes. The cake will solidify as it cools. Chill well and top with berries or sliced fruit.

Makes 8 servings.

Vegetarian becoming vegan - need support! May 21 2007

Congrats! Sometimes loved ones take our decisions very personally. Remind him that this has nothing to do with him and that you value the time you spend together. Remind him of your rationale for going vegan and how much it means to you.

Grilling? Aw... you can grill anything! grilled veggies are the best. I love grilled red bell peppers, zucchini and eggplant. Tofu, tempeh, vegan burgers and hot dogs. And corn on the cob is best grilled in some foil. My husband, a vegan for over 15 years is contemplating buying a giant gas grill beacsue we are craving more grilled veggies.

As for protein and nutrients when you run, make sure you get enough calories. If you are ocncerend about protein do an analysis or get some Spiru-teen, which is a protein shake at health food stores.

Hope it helps. Feel free to use me as a pen pal as well.

Cheers,
Cecily
Vegetarian Considering vegan, but need help with protein May 21 2007
04:23 (UTC)
1 cup cooked lentils   18g protein
1 cup oatmeal      &n bsp;       6g protein
3oz seitan      &nb sp;            31g protein  Seitan is wheat gluten

Tempeh and tofu are soybean products.

the Vegetarian Resource Group (VRG) has excellent nutritional information for vegans.

There is so much fear out there about protein when in fact Americans get far too much protein. i.e. the protein myth. This is damaging as too much protein leeches the calcium in our bones leading to osteoporosis. It also leads to kidney disease, calcium stones in the urinary tract, and some cancers.

The World Health Organization recommends 44g protein daily for pregnant and nurisng mothers whereas the FDA recommeds 75g protein. The FDA is heavily influenced by the dairy and meat industy. Go figure.

I have been vegan long enough that protein is no longer an issue for me. At fist I needed to learn about protein rich foods (mostly as a rebuttal for the all too common question directed at me, "where do you get your protein?") But really even veggies have protein.

Cheers,
Cecily

Congratulations on going vegan! I have been a vegan for over 13 years and was ovo-lacto for 2 years prior to going vegan. I have 3 children, two of which have been vegan since conception. My 15 year old chooses to eat meat outside of home. All 3 are very healthy, bright children.

I have a close vegan friend in my neighborhood, but unfortunately where I live I know far too many former vegans.

I joined this forum because I know far too well the vegan junk foods. I love sugar. I can make mouth watering vegan desserts. I lost 32 lbs while traveling Europe, returned home, did not exercise much (as most Americans) and after the Easter candy buzz I discovered my sugar addiction. Gained 5 lbs!

FYI- cheese can kill you. I am a registered nurse and care for so many people with high cholesterol and heart disease, all caused from what? Lifestyle and diet. Cheese, meat, smoking and lack of exercise all clog up the arteries. That will kill you. Cheese is also loaded with artificial hormones and synthetic chemicals which contribute to cancer. That will kill you.

Below are some excellent resources about the health benefits of veganism.
