Hm. A little more info. Intriguing is the accusation that kids were harassing a teacher with it...somehow...my imagination is a bit stretched here. Also the idea that "meep" became the only word in certain students' vocabulary. The suburbs of Boston can be quite strange, indeed...I knew a strange kid from Danvers once...it must be upwind from Saugus, the town that sounds like it smells. All in all, it smells fishy; seems like a principal that doesn't know how to manage kids' hijinx at all (one of those MBAs that was thrown into a principal position to make a school more cost-effective, perhaps :D)...threatening police action was bound to lead to this PR disaster. With any luck, he'll be fired. :D |

Wait...you had a minor medical emergency involving a cut inbetween fingers, and your first thought was to type? On calorie-count? So...you have internet access, but no access to emergency services or a telephone? I don't get it. :D |

1. Someone with enough money to do all the things I'd like to do, recreationally and philanthropically. 2. Um...if I were that person and had the resources to do those things, I would be doing those things now. 3. Win the Mega Millions jackpot. |

Original Post by cajunrider: Believing and being willing are only two small parts of what needs to take place to convince people to fund your efforts, with the donors knowing full well that your salary will be paid for through those donations. You also have to convince them that you will be able to garner the resources necessary to fulfill your lofty-sounding noble goals, including connections and abilities. For example: "I'm going to save the world with a staff of 10, 8 of them part-time volunteers that I'm in touch with through the internet, but I really believe in saving the world and I am fully willing to take your money and make a go of it despite the fact I've never done this before and have never stepped foot in the State Capitol" isn't going to convince many people to open up their wallets. |

<rant> Stealing for Steel, Inc. So...you want to ask people for money so you can then...do what the steelworker unions are supposed to do (individual advocacy in particular)? What are you going to do with the funds that come in? Just pass it along to the steelworkers, who are a dying breed anyway, since all the high-grade iron was ripped out of the Iron Range decades ago, and the taconite conversion process has proven to be horrifically non-competitive? What do you mean by "community advocacy" anyway? Lobbying state legislators to help out Hibbing and Eveleth? I'm sorry for my skepticism, but I've grown disaffected with the nonprofit community through my experience with the distribution of certain funding, such as Community Development Block Grants (CDBGs). Seems to me that nonprofits spend most of their time fundraising to fill their own pockets or throwing parties for the donors to keep them happy, than in devoting the resources to actual, effective means of achieving their goals. I'm also of the opinion that nonprofits fill in voids where government should be stepping up. If the issue here is what to do with what is probably a growing number of unemployed steelworkers that are not mobile (i.e. can't move to where the steel is...say...China...), then what needs are you looking to meet? Are you just going to be a supplemental welfare organization, redistributing money from your rich donors to the poor steelworkers? Or, are you helping out in just referring the steelworkers to available resources? What is it about the governmental services that are already provided to the steelworkers that is inadequate? Will you be lobbying to make them better meet the needs of the steelworkers? How big is this organization going to be from the get-go, anyway? How will you convince donors that you have the resources to tackle the problem? Sorry, but when people talk about nonprofits, it strikes a nerve with me. I hope you do it right. </rant>

Hm...Brooks is praising Geithner...seems sneaky, in a way, given that Brooks is a conservative...wonder what his angle is at here...seems to be indirectly isolating Krugman as a liberal not in sync with the current administration... |
