Fitness Concept 2 seated rowing machine - cardio or strength? Jun 02 2008

Okay, it might be broken then. it is a Concept 2, says right on it, adn I tried again adjusting the resistance. is there some way you are to do it mechanically? Like, maybe a button on the front? Or was I trying the right way - rotating the side thingie?

Sorry, asking the same question again, I just want to be sure. Again, thanks for all your replies!

Fitness Karate or kickboxing Jun 02 2008

Thanks for the replies, guys! And those links should be fun to watch :)

I know Karate is not great for self-defense - the belts are usually awarded for if you can remember the different routines and such, but depending on the instructors, you can get a bit of a workout. I ended up going to kick boxing cuz it is more fun. I don't pay for karate, though, it's free through the school. Def too poor! haha

I actually do take muay thai training, but the way it's setup here, it's kinda slow and boring, although I still go. I've been offered training at a gym, but it's too expensive for me (currently, I get it for free) and the instructor wants me to fight in a month - Okay, I'm American and scared of these speedy, tiny Thai women fighters! They can FIGHT! So I'm not sure I'm gonnad ot aht, but it is great to learn.

Again, thanks for your replies and the links!

Motivation In a contest with a few close friends and looking for people want to go from 140's to about 125-130.... Jun 02 2008

Hi Shartle - count me in! I'm in the same boat as you - abut 140 and wanting to go down around 130 to 125? My original goal was 120, but looking at pics when I was that weight I actually looked too thin. So this time I willt ry to find a weight that fits me a bit better.

Is there a day you want to do weigh-ons? I will try, but, honestly, the scale scares me a bit, so I'm not sure if I will be able to hold up on that side. However, motivation for workouts and watching our food intake would definitely be helpful to me. Thanks for this post. And good luck to us!

anyone else?

Hi Angel,

First of all - good for you for doing the exercise you can! i LOOOVE walking, and worked up to 15 miles per day one summer. Soo much fun and great stress relief - you hardly notice you are working out (esp outdoors, for me! :))

As for the 15 min break - it is prob actually HELPING your workout. I've read a few studies (and i never believe anything until a few studies have occurred) that say you actually burn fat more efficiently with a 20 min break, but whatever break is convenient helps. They think it might habve to do with muscles being fresher and working more efficiently, but who knows.

As for the calorie burn, women walking typically burn from 70 to 100 cals per mile. That's how I use it. You can search several websites online and figure it out for your weight. Basically, 70 is for 120 pounders, 75 for130, I think the 100 is for 150-160? Can't quite remember. But cardio machines ALWAYS overestimate cals burned, so never trust them. I would go by whatever the websites are saying unless you buy/have a HRM like hte poster above me mentioned - those are hte most accurate, although they are not 100%, either. Good luck and keep it up! You are doing your body a world of good:)

Fitness How Do We Dispell the "Pink Dumbell Theory"? Jun 01 2008

"I'm sorry if we have offended you, I will admit that it does get frustrating sometimes when we try to help someone, but they won't listen. Sure take everything we say with a grain of salt, do additional research if you want, but at least consider what we say, and we just ask that you approach the high rep-low weight mantra with the same skepticism. "

If you had read my post, you would have seen that I have never been part of the "pink dumbbell club" and that I prob lift heavier weights than mots of you. I agree, lifting weights is sexy - esp free weights, and i love love love it! esp when I can only do 6-8 reps and can barely move my arms the next day. No better feeling!

I took offense because you all seem to think you are know-it-alls (I'm pretty sure I was lifting heavy before any of you, although I have absolutely no basis for that assumption. I just saw that a lot mentioned that they used to lift low weights, and I don't remember ever lifting low weights. 10 lb was where I started at 12 years old!)

That's why I took offense. A buncha newbies to the lifting heavy club now think htey have hte right to judge others. It's not nice. If someone asks for my help or looks a bit lost in the weight area, then I offer help - politely, not condescendingly (no throwing their dumbbells across the room, dbackerfan, YEESH!) Just be nice. They are in the gym to get healthier, be proud of them for that. if you're excited because you just discovered the benefits of lifting heavy, good for you! Share it, but nicely. The tone of htis thread is an embarrassment!

I have a question. I googled images of the Concept 2 to see how it was different from hte ones at all of my gyms - and it actually looks the same to me. So my question is, how do you adjust it so that you feel somehting (as other posters here have said that it was a good workout?) When I get on the rowers, it's just a ho-hum boring workout that does nothing for me, so I'm assuming my level is not adjusted haha

I thought there was the thing on the side of the flywheel that you rotated? But I rotate it both directions all the way and it feels hte same no matter what, so I don't think that's it. Any help or suggestions? Thanks!

I don't understand why the people on this site are so rude and judgmental of other people. It's great you all are learning lots about fitness and improving yourselves, but this does NOT give you the right to judge others and make fun of them on these forums.

I have been lifting weights for about 4 years now, and before that, in high school, I played sports and coahces had us doing pushups, squats, wall-sits, and such during practice. So I've always been pretty strong, and I'm proud that I can lift the big weights andknow wht I'm doing. I have gotten lots of helpful advice on this site, as well as t-nation and bodybuilding.com. But in my kickboxing class, most of the women in there lift 5-6 lb dumbbells during the lifting segment, and I would NEVER judge or make fun of them. They are doing what htey can and GOOD for them! I'm happy when anyone is doing something to improve themselves. I had to start somewhere, too (all the way down at 10 lb) and would def have been offended if someone was judging me or even approached me to make fun of me. That's just rude. If people are doing what they can, that's great. They have to start somewhere, and I'm sure if htey learn or know anything about weights they will increase as their muslces are ready. I'mso sick of all the judging I see on these forums. Almost makes me want to quit this site, and not be associated with you people

Sorry if I offended, but seriously, I was very offended. Mind your own business and let others do their thing. Honestly!

I could have written this exact post a few months ago. I loove water - don't get me wrong, but sometimes taking another sip feels like you're gonna drown in all the water you've been drinking all day. So I used to drink a few sips of diet coke every once in awhile for a change. BUT!

I have discovered something a bit "safer" that I like even more (and no annoying side effects, like craving more sweets or getting cranky) - soda water with a lil lime or lemon squeezed into it. DELISH! Calorie-free (unlike diet sodas) sweetener-free, and satisfying. You might not like the taste, though can't imagine why not, but thought I'd suggest it as another alternative :)

Health & Support question for girls who have lost their period and went to the doctor...please answer May 28 2008
15:08 (UTC)

Doug - I haven't had my period in over 2 years - lost it when I was still a bit overweight, lost weight, became mysteriously underweight (eating lots of food, as in thousands of cals a day and still with an 18.0 bmi), gained back to a healthy weight, now am a bit overweight, trying to relax and forget about weight, food, and exercise, etc. Still no period in all this time.

I've been ot several doctors. At first, they tried all kinds of hormone therapy - 3 weeks on some sort of progesterone, off for a week (the week I should have a period) repeat for several months until period returns. After about a year, I gave up. Next doctor did a hormone spit analysis. For a month, every day at the same time, I would spit (I know, disgusting!) into a vial, freeze the sample, and after a month mail them all in to the lab. Results indicated that my hormones are seriously out of whack. She put me on a massive amount of herbs. Those did not work either.

Next doctor said I was too stressed (swhich is def true, being a student studying science in the US - we don't havetimeto  eat, do homework, and as aresult don't really ever sleep. Working out gives you energy if you arechronically sleep depreived, btw lol). Now I am listening to a meditation/relaxation CD every night and trying to relax more. I've been doing htis since January - still no period, but I've gained lots of weight. Not a good sideeffect, but who cares. Time to forget about losing weight/dieting, etc. I want my life back.

I'mbeginning to think I won't ever get a period again. I hope this is healthy and okay cuz I don't know what else to do. It's not toolate, right? I'm not gonna be sterile or anything? I'ma bit worried, but trying to trust this doctor. Good luck!

So, Melkor, is the treadmill-on-an-incine thing just as effective at toning/working/burning cals? Thanks in advance!

I might just have to switch machines!

Thanks for the replies and great info, guys!

Yeah, I am living alone and can cook for myself, which I know is really lucky and healthy. I've learned to just use veggies and fruit, chicken or shrimp, and spices - no soy saucce, no other sauces cuz you just don't know. I've ceased eating out - make me really sick anyway.

Haute: Thanks for the perspective. That's what I'm trying to do, just enjoy my time and not worry too much - i can always lose the weight back in the US where it's healthier and easier.

Giabasch: You def sound like me a year ago! Relax and try to focus more on life. When I learned to do taht (last summer, wish I coudl get back to that mindset) i wound up losing a ton of weight - too much actually, but I was enjoying life so much more it was so worth it! So, please, try to remember - you can always go running no matter what or CC workouts in your room if you must, and veggies and fruit and lean meats are possible to find - even in Thailand - so go for it! Grab life by the horns! haha, love that phrase.

Juli: your advice is awesome! And so motivating. Thank you so much for real advice and ideas. I'm definitely starting to visit the local markets and buy the fresh produce and such. My vice right now is nuts - but other than that I've been making much healtheir choices, so thank you so much for an encouraging and motivating post!

Ali: You're right. I have tried to ask Thai friends, but here they are CLUELESS about health and exercise - they eat chips adn cookies and convenience food NONSTOP! And they are so overweight, I'm in shock! And they think all their food is healthy. I asked what was in a fish ball the other day, and the reply was "fish". Okay, yeah, but all that weight stuff around it and creamy stuff inside? Blank stares. So, yes, visual inspection and self cooking. Make life less stressful and healthier.

On another note, I am loving the great atmosphere and culture here. I bought a bike yesterday and have gone on several bike rides already - so much easier than walking in this extreme humidity and heat! So my advice to anyone is, go outside your comfort zone and go abroad if opportunity allows. Any weight gain/deviation from diet is totally worth it and fixable when back in civilation :)

Motivation anyone wanting to go from 140 down to 120? May 21 2008

Is it too late to join? I've been having a really bad month, continuous binging, and I've gained almost all the way up to 135. EEK! I would love to be 120 again (actually 121, my healthiest weight) and definitely need the motivation.

I willt ry to weigh myself, but lately I've been taking a vacay from the scale. Congrats on all your progress!
Health & Support Can't digest fats - what are some effects? May 19 2008

It is a permanent problem. A couple of years ago, I was prescribed some omega 3 and 6 pills, as wel as cod liver oil, olive oil, and one other one (castor, I think?) but I kept puking up this rancid, acid-burning, oily liquid before I'd even eaten bfast (which is good because normally I throw up all my food.)

So I cut it out. If I eat small amounts of oil, say in fish (which I LOVE!) then I'm usually okay, but I have to eat it at the end of the day just in case, and also so that my belly is pretty full adn awake. I am aware that we need fats and oils to be healthy, which is why I talk to my doctors about it, and why we tried the supplements, but unfortunately I had to stop them - it was jsut too painful adn I was afraid I was going to burn out my esophagus.

My only question is I'm worried that if I eat fats sometimes am I doing damage to my organs. Like, will I cause more damage adn more digestive distress? When I eat oils or fats I notice that most of the food goes through completely unchanged, like not being ablet o digest the fats causes my body to not digest anything.

Will continuing to eat fats make me gain weight? Or damage my stomach in anyway? I haven't been able to fidn anything online. Thank you!

I will try to ask my doctor, I will have an email appt I think within the next month? I'm out of the country so it's hard to get any help here.

Weight Gain Maintaining after gaining? May 14 2008
06:02 (UTC)
2

I am probably echoing what others have said, but I want you to know that I'm right there and I feel for you. I, too, am 5'7" and while I never was anorexic, I mysteriously became dangerously underweight from Sept through Dec. and gaining it back was a process. I originally wanted to be at 121 again - where I was happiest adn healthiest before the major weight drop, but then I kept gaining, and was pretty happy at 125, assuming maybe I'd gained muscle, etc, accounting fr the added weight. I am now above 130 adn trying to accept it.

It's hard, but looking in the mirror and appreciating myself is something I've learned helps me to live life without worrying about food and working out. I have decided to go back to just eating normally, living life, and working out to be fit and happy, and not obsessing about everything. THen, like when I was 121, my body will decide what is healthy for itself. Our bodies want to be healthy adn thin, we just have to remember that - EDs and excessive dieting/execise are just stressful and "stupid" and teach out bodies that they have to outsmart us by holding onto weight (fat). Wow, I feel like I should be telling this to myself! But anyway, just try to relax about food, workout, live life, laugh, have fun with friends, etc. Before long, your body will have regulated and will look amazing without you having to give it a thought or count a calorie. You will be much happier, as I am sure I will,t oo, once I learn to do this. It is very diificult, but I feel like it will be worth it!

Another thing I've had to accept - if we gain a little too much and look a little overweight - who cares? We are still beautiful, and everyone gains a little once in a while. It's a normal part of life. It doesn't make them worth less or me think less of them as a person. And we lost the weight once, we can do it again. The healthy way this time, and for life. Good luck! Sorry for the long post.

HUGS!

am i the only one who thinks this chart is too heavy? It says I am underweight even though i am a binger and consistently way overeat on calories :(

When i was doing well with overcoming my Binging, i was down to about 120, which is ten pounds lighter than their lowest for me, and I was happy, living and eating normally, and not feeling like i had to exercise constantly just to work off parts of the binge. just my opinion, but i think for me it is wrong.

i agree with the other posters that exercise is important just for health in general and mental well-being. I'd go crazy without physical activity!

However, the real reason I am replying has nothing to do with your post. You said your home country is Thailand, and i am studying abroad in Thailand (in NH now, USA) and leaving April 1. i am so excited to go to Thailand! But, I am a little worried about maintaining my weight there. Any advice? And also, any advice in general about living htere for three months? I'm going to Bangkok.

I apologize if this is out of line, but I just got so excited when i saw that you are from Thailand.  I hope you are loving your stay here in the US! (besides the new US-lifestyle related weight issues, of course)

i am with you guys, as well. Was doing sooo great all week - and then... the binging bug found me1 AHHHH! Do any of you feel like it never leaves? Like, once you resist hte binge, the "binge bug" follows you more intensely until you finally give in. And hten you can start over and go binge-free (including not even thinking or wanting to overeat) and then BAM! it's back until you binge? This is my new discovery and it is really depressing me. Any feedback or tips greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are also 30 min circuits for strength and some for just cardio, and some with both. Check em out! It's great for when you can't/don't want to go to the gym. Good luck!

Definitely you are getting a workout, it's so much fun, and the ladies are so inspiring and energetic that you don't realize you are working out at all and then the tape is over and you've been going for like 40 min!
