Weight Loss Weight Log... HUH!? Aug 21 2008

thank heaven for the trend line.  Without it, those day to day fluctuations would drive me mad.  I would love it if there were a way to "turn off" the day to day graph and only show the trend line.

I've not had anyone be rude to be personally, but I have seen it in other threads.  Just think of it as either "tough love" and thank the person for their insight and for setting you on the right path.  Or, consider them idiots who don't know what they are talking about and aren't worth listening to and ignore them.  Some people are just mean because they've got nothing better to do or they like drama and are trying to stir up something.  Folks like that aren't worth wasting your time worrying over.    And, certainly don't get into an argument with them.  They thrive on that.  Don't fuel the fire.

Believe it or not, when I started gaining weight, I was happy - finally had curves.  I made no solid efforts to take it off or to even stop it.  I really didn't monitor my weight (didn't even own a scale), but just went by how I felt I looked - and I thought I looked pretty good - hey, I had curves!!!  Then, stepped on the scale one day at the doctor's office and it read 199.5.  "Hey, wait, isn't 200 pounds considered fat," I thought.  But, I don't FEEL fat!  Well, no, guess not, everytime my pants got tight, I just went up a size and then no longer felt fat.  Then, one day I realized, I'm shopping in the big girl's section and Lane Bryant is sending me catalogs.  Hey, how did Ms. Bryant know I was fat????  Who else knows I'm fat?  I am NOT buying a mumu.......and thus the journey began.

laurie is right on the mark.  You are gaining muscle, which weighs more.  But, muscle also burns more calories than blubber, so at some point you'll start seeing the scale move downward again and with less effort than before.  :)

For those with portion control problems, the 100-calorie snack packs are great.  Allow yourself 2 of those per day.

And, at meals, using a smaller plate truly does help, too.  Don't tell yourself "I can only have 1 plate."  Eat with the idea that you can have seconds IF you are still truly hungry when you get finished with the first plate.  However, wait 30-minutes to an hour after you finish the first plate.  Go outside if you have to.  Walk the dog.  Go take a shower or bathe the kids.  Go play pogo.  Go walk on the treadmill.  Anything to get that 2nd plate of food off of your mind.  Chances are you won't go back for seconds (especially if you've already cleaned the kitchen and put the leftovers away).  I will sometimes go back for seconds, but I only allow myself to have veggies the 2nd go around.  No extras on the potatos or pasta.  That alone can cut several hundred calories per day.

I wouldn't have taken offense to it.  Think of it this way......if you are overweight, you pretty much know it.  There are thin people who believe they are overweight, but by someone else's standards and by medical standards, may not be.  But, if you are truly overweight, then you pretty much know it.

Although you may have perceived him as thin and thought his comment was rude, he may perceive himself as overweight.  If he truly was overweight, it was probably just a "hey, we're in the same boat" type of comment and not meant to be hurtful.

Don't dwell on it.  Either he didn't mean it to be hurtful and there is no point over dwelling on it.  Or, if he did mean to be hurtful, then his biased opinion probably isn't worth much anyway.

Depends on what I binge on.  If it's a high-carb items, my heart rate increase and I get VERY tired.  Kind of hard to explain, but I'm not asleep, but I can't really do anything yet am aware of everything.  And, I just lay there and listen to my heart pound.  Lasts about an hour to hour and a half.  Then, I feel like crappola the rest of the evening.

Interesting.  I may have to try this.  I've had problems since I was about 9 years old, so close to 30 years.  Aside from when I was pregnant, it has never really cleared up, and ALL over-the-counter meds just made it worse (including pro-active).  So far, the best thing I've found is just plain old regular mild soap.  I was skeptical, but I've been doing that for probably 3-4 months and it has helped tremendously (but not 100%).  Still have chin issues, which I've been told is very common for women in their 30's, even those who have always had clear skin up to that point.

OP - I was that way in my teens and 20's.  It wasn't that I was trying to lose weight or not gain weight.  I just didn't have much of an appetite.  I never ate breakfast, seldom ate lunch, and dinner was probably 400-500 calories.  The rest came from snacks during the day.  I figured I had energy and had no problems with low blood sugar, so all was okay. And, for years, it was.  When I got pregnant, I was starving the entire time and ate constantly.  Even so, I only gained 25 pounds.  At that point, I guess my metabolism was still ok.

However, a few years later, I gained 60 pounds due to medication and have yet to be able to really take that off.  I may take off a few pounds, but it inevitably comes back.  The doc said it was because my metabolism was so screwed up from the past 10+ years of eating very little.  To this day, I have to force myself to eat 1400 calories (what the doc recommended).  If I didn't force myself, it would probably hover around 1000 calories/day.  Even at 1000, though, I have  a hard time losing weight.  I tried weigh watchers and had to force feed myself to meet the minimum 24 pts/day requirement, and in the first month, I GAINED 8 pounds.  I kept at it one more month and gained another 3 pounds and quit.

So, moral of the story......although you may not see problems with what you are doing now and you may feel fine, it could come back to haunt you later on.  Now that I'm pushing 40, I'm wondering what else I may have screwed up besides my metabolism.

Nasuoni - I'm in the same boat.  I was 184.something on Friday morning.  As of this morning, I'm 186.8.  I think part of it is just the fact that it's the weekend - guilty of eating more while at home than during the week, so guess I need to get out more.  HA HA!  And, part because I turned my ankle last Thursday and haven't been walking that much the past few days.  Hopefully will be back on track next week.  It's always frustrating to see the numbers go up.

Hi all!  I'm back.  HA HA!  I was in the 180's club a year ago.  Never made it out of the 180's club and gave up.  Now, a year later..........well, trying a different approach this time.  Decided to diet AND exercise this time.  So far, 2.5 pounds in 10 days.  Maybe I'll continue in that direction (continuing at that pace would be nice, too, but I realize that probably isn't likely.)  Goal is 150 by my birthday at the end of August.

I started out at 199 several years ago.  Lost down to 171, and then slowly regained back to 188.  Pretty much have stayed there +/- 5lbs for the past year.  Couldn't seem to break 180, got frustrated, and gave up.

Anyway, wanted to say hi.

Which one?  I guess my main job (you know, the one that pays for my health insurance).  At that one, I'm an office manager for a labor union that crews movies, tv shows, commercials, and music videos.  It's a feast or famine business in this area of the country.

On the side, I do websites for companies, ocassional bookkeeping jobs, and refinish furniture.

I got pregnant on Oct 10th, and on Oct 16th, I knew.   Can't really explain how I knew, but I just knew (if that makes sense).  It was the one and only time I felt that way, and the one and only time I've ever been pregnant.  Took 4 years of trying, too, so I had a lot of opportunities to get that "feeling," but I never did until it was the real thing.

Oh, and that was 1999, not yesterday.  LOL!

So unless you count racing a 2 year old to the potty, no I don't work out.

Believe it or not, you can burn off quite a bit by chasing around a toddler.   I'm like you, though, unless it involved chasing after kids, I get no exercise at all.

At my current 180 pounds, a solid 14.

At 165, a size 12

Around 150, I'm a size 10 (which is my goal)

At 135, I was a size 8 (those days are over)

A lot of this is going to depend on if you are, ummm, bottom heavy or top heavy.  I am definitely NOT top heavy.  LOL!

I don't quite understand this either.  According to CC, my maintenance should be 1900 calories.  At 1900 calories, I would gain 2-3 pounds/week.  No kidding.  At 1400 calories, I seem to be maintaining things.  And, below that I still lose nothing.  I don't get it.

LOL!  Never thought about the sticks of butter thing.  I know 5 pounds of fat, volume-wise, is about the size of a large loaf of bread.  So, I kind of look at it like that.

Also, from my all-time high of 199 pounds to what I lost down to before I gained some of it back (to where I am now), I always thought of it as having birthed quadruplets.  LOL!

As far as sticks of butter, from my all-time high to where I am now....60 sticks.  But, from my most recent start to dieting to now, only a mere 6 sticks.  :(

Just the fact that you are able to get up in the morning and even think about exercising is amazing to me.  I was doing good to get up and go pee without falling asleep on the way to the bathroom.  I had NO energy at all.

I was around 140 when I got pregnant.  Got down to about 132 due to morning sickness, but quickly gained it back and topped out at 162.  Got back down to 140 fairly easily, but then (I swear being pregnant screwed up my system) jumped back up to 199 almost overnight.  So, while I'm technically not working off "baby weight" ('cause it came off by itself), I still think of it as baby weight.

My baby is 7 years old, though.  LOL!

Looks like I'm going to be back in the 190's club.  Grrrr.  I've gained yet another 3 pounds.  This is ridiculous.  I swear the more I try to lose weight, the more I gain.  If I don't try, I at least stay at the same weight.  I give up.
