| Weight Loss | Don't quit living!! | Jan 22 2009 17:45 (UTC) |

This is really inspiring and right on in my opinion! This way of living healthy and exercising is a lifestyle change, not a temporary fix or fad. I used to feel EXACTLY like the OP in that I'd get so frustrated and annoyed when people would ask me to grab dinner or go out for drinks, or when people would make plans for during the week and invite me, thinking that it would throw me off my gym schedule. Eventually I was turning my friends down so much that they just stopped inviting me, and my neuroticism about sticking to the "plan" backfired on me, leading me to rebel against myself and completely give up on my lifestyle of being healthy and exercising. I viewed it as all or nothing. Today, I'm much different, and one of the biggest tips I tell myself is that because this is a lifestyle and not a fad, I need to make room for my friends and parties and dinners and drinks and just chill out. I used to associate these events with food and with having to eat. But I now go into it thinking that I'm there to be with my friends and to enjoy their company, NOT to eat food. For instance, my boyfriend had a holiday party and the spread was ridiculous, with all the desserts and dips people brought. I forced myself to eat a large salad for dinner to fill me up, and then the rest of the night i concentrated on being with people, talking, and remembering the real reason my boyfriend threw the party, which was for us all to get together, not for us all to stuff our faces. |

| I love when people act like there is no food for which they occasionally lose self control. Are you human? No one's perfect. No use pretending to be!
Same here: peanut butter, cookies, any kind of trail mix, bread/flour tortillas, cheese, chocolate of most kinds. Good thing we know our weaknesses! |

| Weight Loss | Late night eating... SUCKS! | Sep 08 2008 15:56 (UTC) |
|
| I agree with all suggestions above in terms of ways to keep yourself busy at night, and in terms of eating properly (and enough!) during the day so that the urge to eat at night isn't so strong. From a psychological standpoint, there are also a few things that I tell myself that, in conjuction with the suggestions above, really have helped me out. First, I tell myself every night around 8-9 when I feel like grazing in my cabinets/fridge that it is OK to go to bed a little bit hungry. You shouldn't be STARVING when you go to bed, but it's OK to not be full, and to be even a little tiny bit hungry. The majority of the time you'll wake up in the morning with the same hunger level as usual, and not be STARVING because you went to bed a tiny bit hungry. For me, I truly hate the sensation of hunger, it is such an uncomfortable feeling to me. Over time I've really tried to condition myself to understand that it is ok to go to bed without being full. Second, I try to remind myself how good it feels the next morning to know that I didnt binge the night before or even eat useless calories that I didn't need. I'm the kinda girl that has a hard time stopping eating once I get started down the late-night eating road, so I constantly remind myself how great I'll feel the next morning. Sometimes I even feel thinner just thinking about it! (I know, I know its all in my head, but it makes me feel good!). Hope that helps a little! |

| Weight Loss | I have a curious question. | Aug 26 2008 17:25 (UTC) |
|
| If you're not hungry, don't eat. It's as simple as that. Listening to your body's feelings of hunger and satiety is the only way to become an intuitive and mindful eater. Normal functioning metabolism often means that some days you're hungrier than others. If you're not that hungry today, chances are your body will want you to make up for it tomorrow and if you listen to your hunger and fullness signals, you'll make up tomorrow for the deficit you have today.
The answer is not eating because you feel you "should". Listen to your body and you can't go wrong. Unless of course you have a serious disease or are so out of touch with your hunger/fullness signals that you arent eating anything all day. But 850 cals, although on the lower side, is no reason to force yourself to eat if you're truly not hungry. |

| Health & Support | Go away period... | Jun 27 2008 14:49 (UTC) |
|
| I have been on Ortho Lo for about 2.5 years now and just in the last 6 months I've had breakthrough bleeding TWO WEEKS before Im supposed to get my period, each month. So my period has been lasting 3.5 weeks for 6 months now. Needless to say my boyfriend and I weren't pleased! I NEVER miss a pill and have been on the pill for quite awhile.
I made a Dr's appointment and brought up the issue, and she tells me that this is completely normal, and that my body is just completely used to that level of hormone, and that stress etc could induce the breakthrough bleeding. She switched my pill to Yaz and I just started taking it. Too soon to tell if this will do the trick, but here's hoping. Could this be a similar situation? |

| I think the chokers are called Frisee!! or Frisse...i dont know, pronounced Fri-zay. I agree though, in forkful you can have a nice clean lettuce bite and then in another forkful you get this weedy branchy piece that looks like it was mowed up haha. I tend to stay away from lettuce mixes that have Frisee.
My salads are usually a mix of baby spinach leaves and baby arugula. Does anyone else think that arugula is the most awesome lettuce ever? |

| Hollyhills: My sincerest congratulations to you! I am very happy for you and sincerely wish you all the best!
However, I do still have to agree with Heather. I think there may have been more going on here than you let us know because statistically i'd find it hard to believe that you got pregnant in the situation you described. I dont pretend to know everything about everything though and it may be possible, I just have a hard time believing it in general. I am in school for biostatistics, and its just really hard to believe. Also, ok i stand corrected about the "boy" and "girl" sperm. I did some research outside of this conversation and you're right. That just sounded odd to me for some reason because I was under the impression that gametes have a half set of chromosomes but include both and X and an Y. My bad. |

| I'm gonna have to highly agree with Heather on this one. Unless there are other details or this isnt the first and only time you guys have done it, I highly, highly doubt you are pregnant. The odds are just way against that in the scenario you've laid out above.
Also, weddingmama, boy sperm and girl sperm? I hope I'm just completely dense to the tone of what you said and that you meant to be funny, because sperm have both Xs and Ys....and are neither male or female...... |

| Zebulancherry, can I just say how impressed I am with you? I dont know anything more about you really than what you've shared in these posts, but you seem to be extremely mature, rational, and articulate for a 13 year old in my opinion!
And if it makes you feel better, I'm 26 and I STILL dont know how to talk to either of my parents about serious things (especially with my food issues) without getting upset. When I'm frustrated or afraid that I'm disappointing them my first reaction ALWAYS is to cry. I've always hated this because I want to be taken seriously! Good for you for acknowledging your reaction to your mom and for apologizing. But I do think it's important to stand your ground as long as you've done your research (which it seems you have) and have strong beliefs about the treatment of animals. I agree with what others on this site have said regarding showing her that you've researched and you know how to take care of yourself and eat healthfully and properly (and enough) on a vegetarian diet. Maybe offer to cook a vegetarian dinner for you and her one night, or involve her in some other similar way in your life. I think once she sees that you are serious about this and you understand how to maintain healthful eating and living on this diet, she will come around. Good luck! |

| I actually made a tuna melt last night and was thinking how bored I was at the thought of tuna salad made with mayo...so I looked at what I had in the pantry and made the tuna salad part of the tuna melt by making my own creation that I like to call "Basil Pesto Mustard". Adjust this recipe based on how much tuna salad you're making.
Put a few tablespoons of spicy/golden mustard, a few handfuls of fresh basil leaves, salt/pepper, a few DROPS of extra virgin olive oil, and a few drops of lemon juice into a food processer and pulse to thoroughly combine. Finely chop a stalk of celery and a quarter of an onion. Mix the basil pesto mustard, onion, and celery with light albacore tuna packed in water and enjoy! |

| This AMAZING italian deli around the corner from me makes what they call "italian" tuna salad, and its basically just tuna with a little onion and celery mixed with salt, pepper, and lots of balsamic vinegar. I think they might put a little olive oil in too but if so its not that much because it is not oily at all. I've made it at home with just the balsamic vinegar and its tastes pretty much the same. | |||

| It really is remarkable stuff. It seems too good to be true. Thats why I'm so curious....I guess actually there is a bad thing about it though...it costs me 3.75 each time I go. So aside from hurting my wallet, what else is wrong with it? I really need to know.
My favorite flavors so far are fluffer nutter and red velvet. The place near me has 4 flavors only each day but they change every day. I am obsessed. |

| Alexwilliams: Thank you so much for the support and the suggestions. They are very helpful. I did some research on when to see a nutritionist and it turns out I meet every single criterion. I have set up an appointment and am hoping she can provide me with just the ideas you've mentioned.
I agree with smallerjeanssize. There is similarity here with alcohol binges. Although I dont suffer from that, its a similar feeling, like you said, of wanting to feel good but inadvertently making yourself feel worse and worse. I had such a sore throat after the binge, and i realized it was because I was practically swallowing food whole without really even chewing or savoring. Thank you again for starting this post. I really think we can help each other. Knowing we're all supporting one another and can relate to one another helps tremendously with the shameful feelings surrounding the problem, and has motivated me to seek help and stick to it. |

| This is probably exactly the post I was looking for today when I popped on here. I believe I am suffering from some sort of eating disorder, particularly because of binging. I am right on par with the first post, I eat extremely well and am very proud of my choices and will power on a daily basis.
On saturday I visited my parents house, where there is food EVERYWHERE. Food I certainly do not keep at my place. Well, long story short, I went nuts. I ate so much I got sick to my stomach. I kept eating and eating, even though the feeling of hunger had long passed and the feeling of sickness had taken over. I did this all in private, when no one was around. It is now Monday, and my stomach and digestion are still all messed up, and psychologically I am having trouble getting myself to eat. I am so ashamed of myself. This isnt the first time this has happened, and on average this happens to me maybe 2-3 times a month. I think it is a sickness and I just want to get better. I want to talk to someone, a professional someone, about my problem. Does anyone have any suggestions of who I should talk to? I am not sure if this falls under the umbrella of a registered dietician/nutritionist, or a pshychologist, or just a GP. There are obviously underlying issues, but physically I experience digestion issues pretty often. Lets support each other. Today is Day 2 of no binging. |

| Foods | Do YOU eat when your NOT hungry? | Oct 26 2007 19:18 (UTC) |

| Yeah, I do. And I beat myself up about it. My problem is that I have always had the bad habit of eating out of boredom or avoidance. So for the past few weeks I've really been trying to step up and kick that bad awful habit. I eat about 5 small meals a day at very specific times to try and conquer that. And its working EXTREMELY well. What I'm now finding though is that when its time for my scheduled meal, and I'm not hungry for it, I'll give myself a great big pat on the back. I'll say to myself, see? You can recognize what it feels like to not be hungry, and not need to eat food just cause its there. And then, the food that I brought to work for my 2 pm snack calls out to me. I'm not hungry, but I know its in my office fridge and that per my 5 meal a day plan and 1200 calorie plan I am ALLOWED to eat it, so it nags at me until I do eat it. I guess what I'm saying is that I feel guilty for eating it even though I'm still within my calorie limits, because I'm just not getting it that I dont have to eat when I'm not hungry! |

| What is going on with the universe today?? This is the second topic thread where everyone is arguing! To each his own guys, to each his own. But, the information presented and advice on what works for you is what I like to hear.
Also, I had removed cold cereal from my diet a year ago because i found I just couldnt A) limit myself to one bowl and B) find a cereal that was really low in sugar and cals and high in fiber. You guys seem to be in LOVE with Fiber One so i bought myself a box last night and gave it a try. Exactly 1 measured cup of cereal plus 1/4 a cup skim and OH MY LORD are you guys right on the mark. And all that dietary fiber? Jackpot. |

| Sytso,
I relate very much to what you're going through. This has nothing to do with rewarding yourself with a single treat after dinner, or splurging calorie-wise on a single item at the end of a successful week. This has to do with full-on consistent binge eating. While I have been able to keep my binges at night after dinner in relative control lately, it is a very intense struggle for which I feel like I have absolutely no control over my body. On several occasions I have actually thought to myself on the way to the refrigerator "You couldnt actually turn around right now if you tried, could you?" It was like I was hypnotized. For me, it was a matter of breaking the cycle of binging and guilt by analyzing what was mentally causing me to do this. I am very active, I work out 4-5 days a week, and eat around 12-1500 calories healthfully each day with no struggle. I never find myself starving and am full after dinner. What I found when I really looked at what I was doing, was that I was eating because I was intimidated by the thought of getting up in the morning and doing it all over again. I have a great life. I'm not depressed. I just have a full schedule every day, and the thought of going to bed just to wake up and do it again really overwhelms me sometimes. So much so that I feel like i want to make myself feel good and treat myself with food, a lot of food, as a reward for getting through the day and as avoidance of thinking about getting through tomorrow. I cant offer suggestions to distract yourself, or even myself, after dinner to make you not think about binging. What works for me is to think real long and hard before the start of a binge, "When i eat this, am I going to be satisfied or will I want one more? After I eat one more will I be satisfied or will I want a third? After I eat a third, isnt it true that I'll feel guilty and ashamed but still not feel full and want a 4th to make the guilt go away? When the guilt goes away momentarily won't it come back immediately? Will you finally go to bed feeling like you've failed at your entire day?" If I answer yes to all those questions before I binge, then I am able to head it off. I have been doing this every day now for awhile and it is so empowering! Guess what, we DO have self control and when you exercise it the mental reward is tremendous. Good luck! |

Kindoflikesarah: I just need some clarification because I'm not the best cook and if it's not exlicitly spelled out for me I will certainly mess it up. You say you measure out about 2 cups of chickpeas because you dont buy them canned. Do you follow the package directions first and soak/rinse them and then cook them? Or can you just use them straight out of the bag? Thanks :) |

| Foods | Diet coke?? how bad is it really? | May 23 2007 18:42 (UTC) |

| Yes mfchill, that proves my point that occasional use of diet soda, regular soda, carbonated beverages etc is just fine. The evidence of the study shows that occasional use is perfectly fine.
But there are people, going back to the original post, who drink large quantities of it daily. Any epidemiological study will tell you that confounding factors for associating osteoporosis to diet soda consumption is that the behavior of consuming large quantities of it is also associated with other lifestyle choices that may be risk factors for osteoporosis. That being said, if your in the higher risk categories for low bone mass, especially pre, peri-, and post-menopausal women, cutting down might not be such a bad idea. |
|||
| Foods | Diet coke?? how bad is it really? | May 22 2007 20:47 (UTC) |
23 |
| The truth about the dangers of diet soda is that people feel that since there are no calories they can drink high amounts without jeopardizing their calorie goals.
The problem with diet soda, and more importantly ANY carbonated beverage (especially for women) is the phosporus, and phosphoric acid. Every carbonated beverage, diet or regular, contains phosphoric acid which is known to depete the bones of calcium. For women, this is a major risk factor for osteoporosis. I think the message is that moderation is key, and a diet soda here and there isnt going to hurt you, but those addicted to several cans of soda or the equivalent a day run the risk of depleting their bones of needed calcium, not to mention being exposed to the adverse affects of caffeine in high amounts. |
