Hey guys.

Just want to drop you a line and remind you that  it's not food you're fighting with here.  Are there other things that started this?  That are making it worse?  Many of you suffer from depression and other illnesses.  Those need to be addressed as well.

Please remember that recovery is not simply putting something in your mouth.  It is knowing WHY you hate to put things in your mouth, which is usually more than just wanting to be thin.

Please try.  and please talk to your families, if you can.  After seeing a long list of posts on how tough it is for everyone, I doubt it continues to be encouraging for anyone that is reading it.  I don't believe this is a forum that intends to bring everyone down.

Adam, my heart goes out to you.  Please keep fighting.  By your writing, you seem to be a very sharp young man. And I beg you to please not throw that away.

Best Wishes.

hahaha, actually, I kind of figure that everyone else has to look at my face (done up or not), not me, so why should I care?

That said, I'll do it for work or going out.  Otherwise it's a dabble of mascara tops.

Oh gosh, guys, where do i start?  Sounds like it's been a touch weekend for everyone....

Actressbabe-A 72 is fine!  Trust me, sister.  Do the best that you can, but WORK HARD. It will pay off, and 5 years from now those grades will pale in comparison to the knowledge you gain by workinghard.  Sounds mother-ish, but does it make sense?  I only say it because I'm living proof.  Chemistry is a bitch anyhow, I had to take it twice in college.  ;-)

vicstudent-You are absolutely right.  It is about control.  There's a good chance that controlling your eating is about the only thing in your life you think you can control.  Well that's not true.  You control everything.  You know that.

Sasha-does you psychiatrist give you "things to remember"?  Do they have any catch phrases or anything that you can think if you're struggling?  Here's one of my favorites "If you can't get the skeltons out of the closet, you'd best teach them to dance"

choutli-They are probably horribly in denial.  It is one of the hardest things in the world to know that someone you love so dearly is taking a very unhealthy path.  They feel helpless and scared (sound familiar?), and unfortunately most people react by seeming like they don't understand or that it makes them angry.  Remember that if your parents love you, which I hope to God they do, they are every bit as terrified of this as you are.
Now, it IS your moms job to find out how to help you.  Does she realize what she's doing isn't the most beneficial?  Hsa she researched or read up on other moms with a child that has an ED?  She needs to start acting like a mom and not a wuss.  From what I understand, and ED is just a manifestation of other problems.  She needs to know/address the deaper things going on with you, and not just the food.

Kylie-You are right.  She can't make you stop. So tell her.  She probably has a legal obligation to let you know when she thinks it would be time for you to go to a hospital.  But until YOU get to that point, she might have nothing but good advice or suggestions to help it get better.  Does that make sense?  If she's a good doctor, she's going to help you get better before jumping into "oh, lets just throw her in the hospital."  And if you're really that worried...ask her!  She should be honest...hopefully she''ll even explain the protocol they have for handling it.

Girls-at least I think you're all girls ;-)...my thoughts are with you, and if there's one thing I can say it's that food is not the enemy.  It's the one thing in our lives that can make us live the best we can.  Try your best to figure out what's making this happen, and try going from there.
Keep fighting...you're all doing great.  emails are welcome if you need to chat.

Hey Buttons!  Congratulations!! Running outside is a whole new ballgame, and boy is it rewarding!

I've got a good old pair of adidas, which I don't think i paid more than $60 for.  You guys might be able to back me up...I think finding a good fit with the right support is the most important thing.  So if you're an in-betweeny size, or have high arches/no arches, you may want to consider a specialty shoe place.  Otherwise, Nike and Adidas have always done well by me.

If you can squeeze out a couple more days in the gym on a treadmill try using them to break in the new pair....that way if they start to hurt, you can just take them off, rather than suffering through getting home....good luck!

Yeah, Happy, then it's your confidence.

A divorce can rip you apart. And you can look at yourself and say "I'm great, I can get an education and raise an amazing kid and be everything I want to be for me" and still have it not be what a woman would want.  because, for some reason you STILL don't believe that you measure up.

Try living your life to its fullest.  Saying to yourself "If I were the most amazing, incredible woman on the face of the earth, what would I be looking for in a guy?"  and then do everything in your power to become that person... Not what you see around you, necessarily, but what you THINK "the one" would WANT to see...the rest falls into place.

With me there ALWAYS has to be a "hook."  Any guy I have ever dated has had that one attribute, whether it be physical or a great socializer or very funny....they've always had to have something that caught my attention.  And kept it.

You'll do great!  Any girl is lucky to find a nice guy.  But we all want a confident, self assured nice guy :-)

happyguy-

You are 38.
Have you ever been in a relationship?  That sounds harsh, but truly it indicates that your confidence must be the problem.  If, for 38 years, you have not attracted a woman, then they are picking up that there is something missing.

Did you "go out of commision" because of your weight or something like a divorce, etc.?

If you knowingly went out of the scene because you had put on weight, then there's your answer.
Foods Anybody going to their local Farmers' Markets? Jun 08 2007

This has nothing to really do with food, but the experience.

One of my favorite memories of my hometown is going to the Farmers Market in the fall, usually very very early on a Saturday, while the sun was coming up.

The one that I went to had these little shops right near the market, and I would always buy a REALLY cheap latte ($2?) and LOVED listening to the farmers yelling out their products, and the smells as you walk past the florists, or even the fish market.

The air was always crisp and clean.  It was usually cold, so I would use the latte or hot cocoa to warm my belly while I selected the perfect apple and dug for $.25 to pay for a barrel of 60....:-)

I think there is something very unique about a Farmers Market that the world has lost touch with.  I have come to love the simplicity of it, and its place in our society.

To me, it was always the one place that the world could stop, and people could just be people, selling and buying.  With no pretense, and no expectations.

Here we go, guys!

Try this:

  • 2 pieces 10 grain toast: 200 cals, 4 g. fat, 16% DV Protein, and 16% DV Fiber
  • 2 Eggs: 140 Cals, 9 g. fat (GOOD fats!), 24% DV Protein.
  • tsp or so of butter for eggs.
  • Juice and/or Milk
Altogether:

  • 340 Cals, 13 g fat, 40% DV Protein, and 16% DV Fiber. +juice and butter
If this doesn't get you through a morning, and isn't one of the best things you can eat, then I really can't imagine what would! I almost always have a banana, nuts, or dried plantains ready if I start to crash.

This is a REALLY big breakfast, and eventually you may be able to widdle down to 1 egg and 1 pc of toast.  But if you can do breakfast AT ALL as a hypoglycemic, then hopefully this could help :-)

Honey, I think you're experiencing withdrawal.
I was never a HUGE coffee drinker, but I had a latte/regular every single morning as a routine in my office.  And THAT was very difficult to break!  So I can't imagine what it must be like for you...

The obvious answer is to switch to an herbal tea, but we all know they taste like poo until you're accustomed to them.  But the coffee has to go.  Period.  How do you feel about chai?  It also contains caffeine, but will help you ween your pallate first, and then ease you into herbals.  Just an idea.

hkellick is right, you should absolutely seek your doctor's opinion.

I like the complex carbs I see in your breakfast, but there are other foods (eggs, yogurts, smoothies) that are going to give you the carbs AND natural sugars that can keep you level through the day.

I'm no professional, but I would absolutely say that varying your breakfast every morning, rather than the same thing every day, will eventually regulate you overall.  Give it a try for a week.

But again, coffee is SUCH a tough one to break.  Best Luck!

KimO, did you just make that up?  Or is it real? That's AWESOME!

Irwiggins-I couldn't agree with you more.  The only thing about the forums, though, is that I'm on them while (gulp) at work, so I try to get thoughts out ASAP (pun intended), and don't really pay attention to spelling as much.  I'm sure the same could be said for many people

I actually work for the government, and thus far much of the work I have seen is very good quality (LOTS of old fogies around here, thank goodness).

However, we were given a review course on business writing recently (if your company/organization ever offers one, DO IT!) and she was saying that:

  • Email will not go away...it is here to stay, and is considered an official document.
  • The shorter the better
  • legal documents (contract, etc.) are pretty much the only ones where longer explanations are better
  • We will never again WRITE in the language of the constitution, and there is a good chance a few generations down will be unable to read the language of the constitution.
very very sad.

Language is a beautiful thing, and it is so sad that our society has begun to promote the degredation of it.

Seriously, though, guys, it's SCARY!  There was a story about it on Good Morning America or something a while ago.  Apparently teenagers are starting to get away with things more and more because their parents can look at their IM or email and have no idea what they're talking about.

Oh HIII! Thank you for existing!  I just got a hint from a little birdy on another thread to come check this out.

I'm sorry, I just read about six questions about what to eat before a race and so on.  I don't have any answers because I've never run a distance race, but would love to hear some!

I'm Blair, 25 on Tuesday, hailing from hot and humid Northern Virginia.  I was a sprinter in High School, and just picked up running distances this year.  The clowns in my office convinced me to register for the Army 10 miler in October.  HELP!!!!!

Um...I usually do 3-3.5 mi. in about 35 min. I haven't done any 5k's, and am REALLY nervous about the 10 miler.  I cross train and lift on off days, and try to get in "long" runs on weekends. (5-6 mi with some walking).

I guess my only goal at this point is to make it all 10 miles non-stop.  anyone have any suggestions?

I use my ipod religiously to save the day....does anyone have input on the nike+ chip?

YAYAYAYA thank you!!

I'm seeing a lot of debbie downers on here lately.  I've never suffered from an ED, but my sister does.   Unfortunatly, she does not seem to have the will that most of you have, and may never recover from her depression and the related complications.

I just want to say that reading these does give me hope for her, but I would also like to say that, though I can't understand what you struggle with, I hope you can all find a happy/healthy place.  You are doing wonderfully for even being here.

Best wishes to all of you, and I am here if anyone would like to talk.  I am not a nutritionist, but do know quite a bit about food and related benefits, so if you have any questions or just want to vent, let me know!

Kylee, I agree that woman was very rude to say that to you.  It's likely she envies the devotion that you have because she perceives herself as falling short next to you.  That said, people do notice (they do not point, stare, or make fun) but they do notice when someone is disproportionately excercising against their physique.  There is also a small chance that her rudeness was also her way of showing concern. "gosh, that girl is so thin, and she's here CONSTANTLY!  Maybe I should say something to her..." and then came off like a complete bitch.  If that was the case, then perhaps it wasn't what she was saying, but how you were reacting that may have made it seem like a big deal?

In any event...I'm glad you are feeling better.  Keep up the good work!:-)

Good Luck Everyone!  I'm here if you need antthing.

niiko...you are dead on about the little guys (sosoooo goood!)

Worked there for 2 years.  Here goes:

  • Sister, you are in for 80 hours of coffee training.  Classes, reading, training.....be prepared!
  • Coffee is a SCIENCE!
  • You will learn that the light roast blends are higher in caffeine than dark roasts or espresso (the longer they roast the bean to extract the more rich flavor, the more caffeine is burned out)
  • You will learn the difference between a "good" and "burned" shot of espresso, and "good" and "burned" milk.
  • You will HATE the people that ask for "half caf venti 3/4 shot mocha at 175 degrees" that will then WATCH you steam the milk and check the thermometer (oh, they're out there!)
  • It's VERY difficult to avoid drinking/trying the beverages.  When I worked there I was 19 and skinny, so I went balls out on everything.  You will probably try near all of the drinks.  They are a treat, maybe just remember that?
  • Your favorite drink may end up a single iced grande 1/2 mocha, 1/2 hazelnut soy latte.  Try it.  AWESOME.
  • Smile til your teeth hurt, but also be able to keep 67 things straight at once
  • Try not to show up late.  or hungover. or both.  Three times or more.  They will fire you.  Um.  Oops.
HAHAHA, you are going to love it!  it was actaully a GREAT experience:-)  (and tips are nice, too!)

OK...oooo that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside!

I'm not saying the other suggestions arent absolutely correct, because i'm SURE they work very, very well.  Naturals just happen to be some kind of magic for me.

Basically when we eat processed, treated, and unnatural food, it takes longer for them to get through our digestive tract.  The bacteria housed in most of our small and large intestine (in many people's systems) is probably horribly out of whack, and it makes life very, very tough for our liver and gall bladder to do their jobs.

If the liver can't cleanse the body of all of the toxins contained in foods, then it gets pissed, and sort of turns against you in the manner of unsupported immune system and things like headaches, poor skin, and so on.  Many, many illnesses, I believe, can be avoided if people didn't shove unnatural food into their bodies.  I simply don't think it's the way God intended it to be, ya know?

So, as far as not having access...here are some ideas:

  • THere is currently a great debate about local foods vs. organic foods.  Do you have a market around your house that you could hit up occasionally? (not all of it is untreated, depending on where you live that is unavoidable)
  • I try to stick to cage free eggs because a. they taste better! and b. they are typically grain fed chickens (not given hormones and the like)
  • Meat is VERY VERY important with a natural diet.  Be sure to stick to lean cuts and if you can find anyone that sells *pasture-fed* meats, then you are in serious business.
Theres a TON more...I could go on and on....shoot me an email if you'd like to hear more granola babble!

OK, I have a VERY unique suggestion.  Please bear with me.

They run in my family, my mom can be debilitated by them for days, and i guess my great grandfather commited suicide because of them.

I got them for the longest time, and for me they usually started out as regular headaches and then progressed into vomiting and absolute misery.

But...here it comes:

Change your diet.  Processed foods are probably caught up in your digestive tract, and your liver function can affect your headaches.  No scientist will tell you, and no doctor will tell you, but I would hands down say that stripping processed/treated/chemical foods from my diet (and increasing activity) has stopped the migraines.

I'm sorry if its a silly and frustrating thing to hear, but I will always swear by food being the beginning and end of everything your body does.

This is also completely off topic, but I also stopped getting strep throat when I switched, which I had been getting regularily for years.  I guess it also boosts your immune function.

ok, crazy girl will stop talking, but please try it if you can!

I am SURE it has been said by now, but it is mom and dad's responsibility.  End of Story.

We cannot control whether or not a 13 year old at 5'5" who weighs 106 is looking at our "scared to go over 600 calories" thread and taking negative energy from it.  WE CANNOT CONTROL THAT.  But their parents can.  And should.

That said, if an obese child is growing up in a household where their parents aren't educated on nutrition, this may be the best website for them.  So it's a shady grey area.

This, unfortunately, is one of those issues that come back to expectations set forth by society (and being spat on and called a whale growing up, I can CERTAINLY identify with those suffering from this), and the responsibility of parents to educate their own children on this crucial information.
The Lounge What makes someone beautiful? Jun 05 2007

i habitually think other women are beautiful, particularily if I am friends with them.

I find myself gauging physical (meaning the socially acceptable definition as per the modern media), intellectual, and emotional beauty in women CONSTANTLY.

I hope that doesn't make me sound superficial, but I am AWALYS comparing myself to others.  I don't even know that it's an insecurity because I am ok with who I am, but in terms of the grander scheme of things, how do i measure up against the pack?

It's also a very good thing when you see a beautiful woman and aspire to be like her.  She aspires for beauty for her own reasons, as well.  With that, though, I don't "want" anyone else's nose or tooshie or legs.  I just note that she's got them and I'll do the best with what I've got, and count my blessings for what I was born with.

At the end of the day, the obvious answer is that beauty is very, very internal. BUT, if you are a beautiful person, you can appreciate yourself, and care for yourself, as much as you want to take care of your husband or children or career.  and THAT is about making healthy choices...which is why we're all here to being with!

Greenpea-

Yes, they will kill you.  *sigh* is it EVER easy?

amy and I were just talking about this in msgs.  I have a mantra that I repeat every time I hit a hill "You can relax on the way down, you can relax on the way down" until i'm on the way down, and relaxing.  However, don't stop!  I tend to just kind of plod along after a tough hill.   Beacuse you're working so hard to get UP the hill, this reminds you that there is a "down," too, and that its gonna be awesome the whole way!

The other thing I've started to do with outside running is setting goals.  "Ok, if I take this hill, and then can keep it up until I get to the bridge, then I can walk across the bridge.  OK, I'm so badass, I can do this!"  It sets it up such that walking is the reward.  On a REALLY good/timed run, I'll let myself walk up a hill on the way back.
