Booze! I drink all those empty calories and then binge because 1) I'm starving from cutting back actual food for the first part of the day in order to be able to drink and still stay within my calorie range, and 2) because I have absolutely no willpower when I'm "tipsy." I think I might actually consider chasing down and eating a live chicken when I'm starving and drunk! Not having ice cream or chips (or live chickens) in the house has helped though :) |

Egg whites! Lots and lots of egg whites! And breakfast. I always try to eat breakfast when I'm trying to drop some weight because it keeps me from going overboard at lunch time. |

I've gotta go with the "I can't Believe it's not Butter Spray" - less than 5 calories for 20 sprays and tastes very much like margarine! Great on veggies with a little garlic powder, toast, baked potatoes, anywhere you'd use butter or margarine...I even cook with it! Also, light english muffins! These are great toasted with the spray butter, egg white and fat free american cheese. Yummy low-cal breakfast sandwich!

| Weight Loss | question.... | Feb 15 2009 15:36 (UTC) |
|
Original Post by amethystgirl: Agreed. Up your calories slowly (100 every couple of days) and keep exercising. 1200 cals is way too low for someone of your activity level and weight. It's a slow process, and FYI those pics they show in the hydroxycut commercials are doctored (to appear fat) and some are actually of DIFFERENT people than the skinny, buff ones. Look at the faces... rediculous. |

| Fitness | Anyone else terrible at running/jogging? | Jan 18 2009 15:38 (UTC) |

Thanks a lot! I really thought I was alone here, but I appreciate all the feedback. I've never been good at running (sprinting? Yes, but only VERY short distances and only a few times). My motto used to be, "The only time you'll see me running is if I'm being chased!" I guess I'd just like to prove to myself that I am, indeed, one of those people that can do it....and eventually do it well. Thanks for the input everyone. I do feel better, and more motivated to continue at a comfortable pace for my body. |

Haha! Gotta love the crab hat (I'm originally from Maryland and they're everywhere up there). Geez, I'd love to block those ads from showing up. I'm not tempted or anything, I guess I'm just concerned that some of the younger, more impressionable cc'ers might see that and think that it's a better route to take. When I was a teenager I would have done (and did) just about anything to lose weight ... apart from a healthy diet and exercise. The magic weight loss pill sounds glamorous and easy when you're 16 and see yourself as overweight. |

Agreed. I think a lot of them come here to find people who will tell them that, yes, it's just fine that you are completely starving your body and that all you eat are 2 carrot sticks and 5 cheerios a day. Don't worry, you'll lose weight soon! It drives me crazy, and it completely undermines the efforts of many cc'ers who struggle to stay within their own healthy calorie limits each and every day!

| Weight Loss | How bad is it to eat too little cals? | Aug 28 2007 17:44 (UTC) |
19 |
That's because you're losing muscle. Your body needs 1200 calories a day just for it's basic functions like breathing, heart beat, digestion, etc. (coma patients need 1100 I think). Your body is pulling energy from your body where it can find it...your muscles. It's storing every bit of fat that you put in your mouth for "later" ie. your body is in starvation mode and clinging to the fat, but "digesting" the muscle to use as energy. Work out all you want but you won't be able to hang on to any muscle and you won't be able to lose much fat at all. Even if you're losing 3lbs a week now by eating so little, your weight loss will come to a halt very soon and you'll either have to keep cutting your calories (which is obviously miserable and extremely unhealthy) or you'll decide to eat more and gain weight twice as fast and it will be much harder to get rid of. By eating 700 cals a day your metabolism is coming to a screeching halt and you will pay the price very soon. I'm not saying this to be arguementative or confrontational, I'm saying it because this is EXACTLY what I did myself when I was trying to lose weight. Several times I did this type of extreme caloric restriction and each time I gained all the weight back and then some in a matter of WEEKS. It's hard for me to lose weight now, because my metabolism is still off from my extreme restrictions in the past. I'm just trying to give you a personal perspective into what this will ultimately do to your body. Good luck and do what's right for your body! You'll reap the benefits I promise. |

| If you stopped working out you are probably losing muscle mass too. I'd say start getting exercise again, and maybe don't push yourself as hard as you were before, but get the exercise nonetheless. | |||

If your "happy place" so to speak is at the gym it could be a lot worse. At least through all this you are exercising like you should...and enjoying it! Don't be too hard on yourself. You could have eaten 2500 calories and NOT exercised...that would have been much worse. You should be commended for exercising as much as you do, and the counting will fall back into place when you are ready. Good luck :) |

| This happens to me as well. It really is amazing just HOW dehydrated you get. I lost 5 lbs overnight once! I was so happy when I got on the scale the next day (except for the throbbing headache) until I weighed myself the next morning and I was right back to where I was before my little binge. | |||

Yep, this really does suck. I'm having trouble focusing at work and I've been forgetting everything...especially what I've been eating. I just don't want to gain weight during this time and then feel even worse in general. I keep expecting to see her around every corner. We're moving in two weeks which will help, but I'm just hoping I can climb out of this hole somtime soon. The people I work with are either "dog people" (which I am too...I'm just an all-around "animal person") who have never owned a cat and think, "It's just a cat, get over it already." Or they just aren't animal people and don't understand why someone would need to take a day off work or mourn for their lost pet. Really insensitive but I guess they just don't get it. |

Thanks a lot everyone. It's been so much harder than I thought it would be. She was my first pet that I've owned on my own. I grew up with pets but none of them were ever really mine. She had FIV (feline version of HIV) and we knew when we adopted her 11 months ago that she didn't have a lot of time left, but she was doing so well. It's just been horrible, and my boyfriend is a wreck too. We are going to adopt two kittens from the same litter, from a local shelter in a few weeks (after we move) because I just don't think that I can deal with the lonliness. I'm so used to having a fuzzy, purring little body close by and I think you guys are right in that it will help me cope. It won't replace her, but it will ease the pain a little. I don't think I'm going to spend a whole lot of time worrying about calories in the next few weeks. Thank you so much for all the kind words...I know this is just an internet forum but they really mean a lot to me, so thanks. |

"Try to remember how you were NOT necessarily when you first found C-C, but when you first tried to lose weight. What did YOU believe in? What did you think was true?" Excellent point HK. Very well said. For those people who go out of their way to ask you about your diet and how you lost the weight and you tell them, "I just counted my calories, made healthy choices, and got a little more active" and they refuse to believe that this is all you're doing...ie you must be taking some pill or working out for two hours a day or doing the lemonade fast, etc. Like, it sounds easy but they know it isn't so they want to know your "quick fix" secret. All this while you're watching them polish off the second half of a package of double-stuffed oreos is kind of annoying. If you want my help and I give it, but you just scoff at the information I give you then oh well. I don't think these people are bad or evil or inferior in anyway, but it's just irritating that they asked for my help and then shrug it off and continue to cram cookies in their mouth. |

| Weight Loss | how often do you weigh yourself? | Aug 17 2007 20:17 (UTC) |

I lose weight when I sleep too. It's because often times you sweat in your sleep and moisture is lost through breathing as well. I've weaned myself off of weighing myself everyday though. Because it's a much bigger pick-me-up when I've lost 2 lbs at the end of the week! Also, I get discouraged very easily if I fluctuate by a couple pounds. |

You could have a bowl of oatmeal (approximately 130-160 cals) and then go for a nice, relaxing, hour-long walk. According to this site, a leisurely stroll such as this will burn about 160 calories....there goes your oatmeal! And I've personally found that oatmeal keeps me full for ages. Good luck! |

Eh, I treat myself as I go. If I really want to eat it, then I will and I'll just build it into my allowance for the day. I agree with Chad54 in that your weighloss should be the reward and perhaps you should give yourself non-food related rewards like buying a new purse or getting a manicure or going to a movie (it's getting expensive these days so I count the movies as splurging!)
