| I have trouble limiting my portions after it's cooked. I've started divided the box into servings when it's dry. You can figure out how many by looking at the per serving weight, and box weight. Most of the boxes I buy have four servings, which is pretty easy to figure out. I put shapes into baggies. With longer spaghetti-type noodles, I tie bunches together - little strips of plastic wrap work well if you don't have any clean string to spare. | |||

| I had a rare chance for an exciting weekday lunch today. Normally I bag my own, always roughly the same - salad with some sort of protein topping, and a piece of fruit. Today, I booked a couple hours off the middle of the workday for a doctor's appointment, and took myself out for lunch while I was at it - mmmm, miso soup and sashimi! | |||

| Weight Loss | Calories less past september or weight gain? | Sep 13 2007 21:22 (UTC) |

| I'm just hoping to get the last of the excess off before it gets really cold. I really feel like I'm well equipped to handle maintenance, I just need to get to a weight worth maintaining! I'm totally prepared to continue exercise, there are things I like to do indoors. My attitudes toward food have changed, I can eat reasonably at special occasions. Since winter will interfere with outdoor exercise, and is so full of special occasions, I don't want to be striving for a major deficit anymore! | |||

| I found fitday before I found CC, so I've kept my food log there, but get a lot of help from the community and some of the tools here. | |||

| I love chicken wings, can't justify the calories. I like to slice up boneless skinless chicken breast, mist the pieces with just a little oil, and bake them until they are cooked through. I take them out, brush with whatever sauce I want (usually some mix of hot sauce and low-sugar BBQ), and put them back in the oven for a couple minutes so it bakes on. Sometimes I do some home made potato wedges at the same time, since the oven is ready anyway. I use a little fat free sour cream for dipping, and load up on veggies on the side. | |||
| Weight Loss | Eating Skinny COSTS more than Eating Fat | Sep 13 2007 16:10 (UTC) |

| I've managed to keep my grocery prices about the same - as long as I remember to buy produce only as it's needed, and eat it before it rots! When it comes to convenience foods, I definitely notice the cost difference - regular hot dogs are often on sale for $1/pack, regular burgers $5/24 patties... lean meats are NEVER that cheap, but hey, at least they taste better in addition to being healthier than the cheap stuff. Treating myself has definitely become more expensive. A carton of berries is more expensive than a chocolate bar. Sushi is more expensive than Chinese food, or pizza, or a fast food meal... Last weekend I realized that what I spent on one meal's worth of sashimi was the same price as the pick-up deal for two large 3-toppings at the pizza joint near my apartment (and they make delicious food!). Oh well, I guess I'm worth it! |

| The social committee at work was selling Cinnabons yesterday and today. I've had to walk by the table more than a dozen times - and they're not just sitting there, it's a fundraiser, so they're going for the hard sell! I just have to keep repeating in my head "750 calories... 750 calories..." - and I am thanking my lucky stars that a table with a few boxes of buns doesn't smell nearly as tempting as the actual Cinnabon outlets when the stuff is being baked! | |||
| Weight Loss | anyone else not "technically" overweight? | Sep 12 2007 21:51 (UTC) |

| Started out with a BMI in the "obese" range, and have made it down through "overweight" into "normal". Seeing those numbers is great, but since I can also see what is still a flabby belly, I'm not going to stop working yet! I'm definitely a long way from underweight. | |||
| Motivation | i hate how much i eat when im with friends. | Sep 12 2007 21:31 (UTC) |
|
| I started bringing food with me. With close friends who know I'm working on my weight, I'm not shy about bringing a whole separate meal for myself if I know everyone else is planning on going for grease. With more casual aquaintances, I bring along snacks for everyone to share, and that seems perfectly normal, even polite - I just bring things like pretzels and veggies to balance out the chips and candy that other people bring. | |||
| Weight Loss | WA WA WE WA!!!!!!!!! cleaning burns a lot of calories!! | Sep 12 2007 21:17 (UTC) |

| Weight Loss | I dont own a scale - do I have to? | Sep 12 2007 18:25 (UTC) |

| You can definitely track progress with measurements/clothing sizes. Weights are handy if you're curious about BMI, what "range" you're in, etc. I don't own a scale, but my friends do, so I check my weight when I visit them, which is about once a week, sometimes a little less often if we're busy. I get consistent results from using the same scale every time, but I can't get obsessive and start weighing myself multiple times a day. | |||
| Weight Loss | The Baconator. | Sep 05 2007 23:57 (UTC) |

| I can resist the Baconator, even living next to a Wendy's, with a boyfriend who brings home take-out from there all the damn time! I am, however, dreading the inevitable return of the Bacon Mushroom Melt.... At this point I'm sure it won't taste as good as I remember, and I could make something similar at home in a far more healthy way, but whenever it's around, its presence taunts me. | |||
| Foods | What Do You Do With the Egg Yolks? | Aug 31 2007 17:20 (UTC) |
21 |
| I can buy cartons of pure egg whites in grocery stores here (Ontario, Canada) - they're next to the Egg Beater-type products, but don't have anything else added. Very convenient.
I've done the yolk hair conditioner thing before, it's a little gross in the process, but does have nice results. If I didn't have a way to buy pure whites, I would probably throw out a lot of my yolks - yes, it feels wasteful, but part of losing weight is accepting that sometimes the food would be just as wasted if you ate it! (I'm still trying to learn this!) |

| I'm a big fan of the dark chocolate Kit Kat Single - 80 calories! Sure, it's just a smaller Kit Kat, but as much as I have the willpower to keep a regular bar at home and eat it gradually, it's nice to be able to pick up a treat when I'm out and about and not have to worry about portion size. | |||
| Foods | Filling Foods...... | Aug 30 2007 00:26 (UTC) |

| I was away at a camp last week, and knew I'd either sleep through breakfast or perhaps find it too tempting (damn you, bacon and hash browns!), so I brought enough Clif bars for the week. They have pretty good nutritional stats compared to a lot of the bars out there, and I think they taste great. Along with a piece of fruit mid-morning, they definitely satisfied me until lunch. Luna bars are made by the same company, and are slightly smaller/lower-cal/different flavours etc, you might want to check those out. Of course it's great to make breakfast at home, and that's what I do on a regular basis, but I'm glad I've found a ready-to-eat option that works so well for me. | |||
| Foods | teaching kids healthy eating habits?? | Aug 17 2007 18:49 (UTC) |

| msspeech, I absolutely LOVE that you have fruits and veggies constantly permitted and available. When I was a kid, my parents encouraged a lot of healthy and varied eating, but were strict about snacking, especially after dinner. Sometimes I'd be starving if it was a night that I had an after-dinner activity of some sort - girl guides, etc. I'd have to try to sneak food to my room. I have always loved fruits and veggies. I can remember getting caught with a carrot one night, and having to put it back. If I did make it to my room, I'd eventually get busted because obviously, throwing apple cores etc into a bedroom wastepaper bin would result in odour, fruit flies, etc. This is one of the things that led me to start buying and hiding junk food once I had the resources to do do - candy wrappers don't rot! I don't blame my parents for the fact that I got fat in my teens and early adulthood. However, it definitely would have been great to be allowed to eat healthy foods whenever I wanted, I think it would have prevented/lessened some of the bad habits I developed. |

| Weight Loss | Camp counselor next week - suggestions? | Aug 15 2007 17:41 (UTC) |

| I'm facing camp food next week too, typically a lot of simple carbs and grease, the odd healthy choice. I don't want to skip out on the social aspect of mealtimes, so I'm going to use portion control at meals, and am bringing along some portable food items to supplement what the meals lack. So far I have: -V8 (the full-sized can is 70 calories and 3 veggie servings) -Clif bars (protein and some fiber, not too much fat) -All-Bran Snack Bites (super yummy, 100 calories and 5 grams fiber) -mini cans of tuna, the kind with poptops (good protein, as little as 80 calories per can depending on the flavour) |

| Weight Loss | Day Off? | Aug 14 2007 20:02 (UTC) |
|
| On the vast majority of weekdays, I eat my meals alone and am in total control of the food. On weekends, I'm more likely to be doing social things, eating with other people, going out, etc. I just plan to eat more on the weekends, but usually still within reason, just a few hundred calories more than I do on weekdays. This works for me. My weekly average is still low. If a really special occasion comes up, I'll relax even more and eat whatever I want, but we're talking once every couple of months. I'm still losing steadily. | |||
| Foods | What does your packed lunch look like? | Aug 14 2007 19:29 (UTC) |

| I eat roughly the same things at work every day, makes shopping/planning easy, then I get my variety at dinner. I bring:
-fat free yogurt, I really like Source and Silhouette -raw veggies, often baby carrots because they're ready to go out of the bag -a big salad made of spring mix and grape tomatoes (again, no prep required!) topped with some sort of protein; lean meat, beans, seasoned tofu, avocado, etc etc, depends on my mood -two pieces of fruit |

| Weight Loss | Fiber pills question | Aug 14 2007 17:51 (UTC) |
|
| Bumped, because I've been thinking of picking up some sort of fiber supplements, and I've never used them before. I'm going away to a camp next week, and having been there before, I know the menu won't get me to 25 grams per day. (and that's not the only thing the food lacks health-wise!) I am bringing in some of my own food, but will have to base most of my eating on what's offered. I can only carry so much with me, and storage is an issue too. I'm going to check out the stuff people have mentioned already, but does anyone else have any other preferred brands/dosage types for fiber supplements? | |||
| Weight Loss | should I let myself CHEAT on my birthday? How to prevent bingeing? | Jul 31 2007 21:40 (UTC) |
1 |
| I think you should enjoy the day! People have given good advice about portion control - cupcakes instead of a big cake, sending leftovers home with people, etc. Remember, even if you eat 3500 extra calories that day (that is, maintenance plus 3500 more! a lot of food!), you're looking at a one pound gain -which will be pretty easy to get rid of if you get back on track right away. | |||
| Foods | Smart choices for pizza? | Jul 31 2007 19:20 (UTC) |

| Not sure if it's only in Canada, but President's Choice Blue Label pizzas are great. They come on whole wheat thin crust, and are full of fibre. | |||

| I have been crazy for popcorn lately, popped without fat, with butter added after popping... I'm not made of stone! I don't add fat to most other things I eat, and I make sure there is room in my calories. I can chow down on it like there's no tomorrow, but the left-handed method definitely slows me down.
agape1897 - I totally use that method when I'm eating alone, I make myself get up to refill my water or something, just to pace myself. |

| vidaloca - Dempster's Bodywise sells a multigrain bread in Canada that has a similar calorie count and is pretty tasty... not all of the varieties within the Bodywise line have the same nutritional stats though, so check the label! | |||

| Smirnoff Ultra 1 has 100 calories and 1 gram of carbs per bottle, and is pretty tasty. I don't drink coolers often, I'm usually a wine or vodka/club soda kind of girl, but I buy this brand when I want to drink something a little different. | |||
