I eat lots of broccoli, but a cup of broccoli has only 4% calcium and 4% iron. You'd have to eat 5 or more cups of broccoli a day to make much of an impact.

That link doesn't work.

My mom used to make me a couple interesting sandwiches. She was born in Memphis, not sure if these are Southern concoctions or not. And, sorry to the original poster, two of these have PB.

1) Banana and peanut butter
2) Banana and mayonaisse
3) Marshmallow cream and peanut butter

Those last two won't help you lose weight.

"Chicken Abortions" -- reminds me of what I consider to be the funniest moment ever on a reality television show. Allow me to share it with you.

It was on a show called "Amish in the City", which aired a couple years ago on the UPN. The basic premise was they took 6 "city kids" and 5 Amish kids and put them in one house for two months or so. In one scene, Mose, one of the more devout Amish kids, went grocery shopping with Ariel, a somewhat ditzy blonde militant vegan city kid.

Mose stopped to get eggs and Ariel said, "Ick, chicken abortions, you shouldn't eat eggs." Mose replied, "I bet Abraham Lincoln ate eggs." To which Ariel responded, "Yeah, and that's probably what killed him."

Just about the greatest line ever on television.

My addition to the scary food list is crawfish. I was about to eat one once at something called a "crawfish bake" in Texas until one of the more experienced people told me how to make sure you got all the poop out. I decided it wasn't worth the effort. Then I watched as one man and his son competed to see who could eat the most. After an hour or so, they had mountains of empty shells in front of them. I noticed they didn't make much effort to get the poop out.

Weight Loss Opinion/reviews on "YOU ON A DIET"? Jul 23 2007

My wife made me watch a Dr. Oz episode of Oprah and it was what actually triggered my decision to lose some weight. It all started when he said 25 grams is the recommended daily fiber intake. I started looking at labels at the grocery store and was amazed just how difficult it is to get that much fiber in your diet. I did some searches for fiber content of fruit and veggies and ended up at this site and started tracking my diet. So, I have him to thank for that.

If you drop 100 calories off your diet and simultaneously start burning 300 more calories a day through exercise, you should be just fine. What's harder though, keeping your calories down on a daily basis or working out every day?

My stomach was really messed up on Saturday and the only thing that would cure it was a Jack in the Box Sirloin Bacon Cheeseburger and Chocolate Shake. I am happy to report that I did not have any fries. Yesterday I did great until 10 PM when my wife opened a bag of ruffles. 15 minutes later, I'd upped my calorie count for the day from 1700 to 2600.

Fortunately I did a lot of swimming and only ended up gaining a pound or so.
Weight Loss Can I possibly make ice cream work?? Jul 20 2007

I eat the Breyer's 100 cal cups and they are great.

One way to (a) make the experience take longer, and (b) make it even healthier, is to put the contents of the ice cream cup in a nice big bowl, and then add any or all of the following:
- banana slices
- nectarine slices,
- strawberries,
- blueberries,
- raspberries,
- blackberries,
- chopped almonds.

Basically you can have yourself nearly a full-blown ice cream sundae / banana split with less than 300 calories, and, you get a whole bunch of fiber while you're at it!

Congrats!

I also hit my halfway point yesterday, 20 pounds since Memorial Day. 20 more pounds and I'll weigh what I did in college (almost 30 years ago).

Thanks calorieCount.com, never could have done it without you.

Most of the grocery stores around here have salad bars now. I like to fill a huge container with all the stuff that's a pain to cut up, like bell peppers, onions, etc., then head to the produce section and load up on bags of greens, bags of carrot strips, pre-cut broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms.

Then I've got salad for a week and it only takes a few minutes to throw it together. It costs a bit more than if you were to cut everything up yourself, but well worth it when you consider the time you save in preparation and cleaning.

I hate to direct anyone away from calorie-count.com, but the site http://www.nutritiondata.com has a lot of information about healthy weight gain. They have some tools that let you look up any food and then find similar foods that are better choices for healthy weight gain.

If I had to eat 4000 calories a day, I'd eat about 10 Mrs. Fields cookies. Those are TASTY, and not too unhealthy.

I just got a flyer in the mail from California Pizza Kitchen with 5 new entrees. One of them was a sauteed salmon fillet with grilled asparagus and some noodles in a lemon caper sauce. It looks delicious and can't be more than 300-400 calories: http://californiapizzakitchen.com/menu/specia lties.aspx

I downloaded Panda Express' nutritional info and was pleasantly surprised to find several really good options, including tangy shrimp, veggie spring rolls, mushroom chicken, and even broccoli beef.

IHOP has a cod hollandaise which isn't bad, comes with broccoli -- make sure you get the sauce on the side and use only about half of it.

I said it a couple other places, but El Pollo Loco's Original Pollo Bowl is good and good for you! Only about 500 calories for a whole meal.

Sushi in moderation is pretty good. Stay away from the fatty rolls with avocado, mayonnaise, cream cheese, etc ...

P.F. Chang's has complete nutrition info on their website. They've got a lot of good stuff.

Yeah, that's not too good. The site I found with this information also informed me that I could burn this off by walking for 10 hours, bicycling for 5 hours or swimming for 3 hours.

Thanks for all the responses. I had no idea there were so many horrible fast food options out there.

Well I guess this brings up the question, 'Can a dieter eat fast food?' With a fast-paced work schedule and young kids, etc, sometimes you don't have a lot of choice.

I find that if you study the nutritional information closely enough, you can usually pick out one or two things at each joint that are reasonable options in a mostly healthy diet.

Some examples:

El Pollo Loco Original Pollo Bowl

McDonald's Premium Classic Grilled Chicken Sandwich (NO MAYO)

Del Taco Beans 'n Cheese Cup

Burger King Tendergrill Chicken Salad w/the lite dressing

Also, most places now offer healthy alternatives to frys for the combos, such as McDonald's Fruit 'n Yogurt Parfait, Burger King Strawberry Applesauce Cup, and El Pollo Loco Refried Beans or Steamed Veggies.

I know that most of this stuff is still processed and loaded with sodium and/or sugar, but if you must go fast food, you CAN choose wisely. Just DO NOT try to have BREAKFAST at a fast food place!

Congrats!

I'm in the same boat -- started counting calories here on May 23, but I'm discarding the first week because I was over 3000 calories every day!! This site helped me understand that I've never understood healthy eating, even though I thought I did.

I'm down to about 1700 calories per day and have dropped 9 pounds in 3 weeks. Another 10 pounds and I will weigh less than I have in about 15 years.

Turns out my biggest problem was portions. I'm a big guy so I thought I should eat lots of everything. I can still eat pizza as long as I only have one or two slices instead of five or six.
Maintaining Large (healthy) breakfast to maintain? Jun 16 2007
00:12 (UTC)
A couple months ago, I started trying to eat a cup of oatmeal with a little flax oil, some brown sugar, and loaded with berries every morning. When I do, I am not hungry until after noon. But it almost seems to be a cumulative effect. A couple weeks ago I thought I'd cut some calories by just eating the berries and skipping the oatmeal. After a few days of this, I found that I was much hungrier later in the day (like after lunch and dinner). When I switched back to the oatmeal regimen, after only a couple days, I was back to feeling full all day. Turns out I am able to cut calories better by eating the oatmeal. The way I make the oatmeal, it's about 500 calories and 10 to 12 grams of fiber. If you throw a banana in, it makes you even fuller but adds 100 calories.

Try eating very high fiber foods all day. This has kept me full lately. I'm packing in 25 to 35 grams of fiber in about 1500 calories daily. At 5 pm when you get hungry, try eating a banana, a pear, a couple stalks of broccoli, 10 blackberries, 10 raspberries and some refried beans. That's about 300 calories and you should be extremely full afterward.
