Foods Elk Burgers....UM DELISH Sep 06 2009

4

I know, buying online is expensive. As are the Elk products at my weekly farmers market (but I bet better than online). I beleive 3 patties are 1 pound.....and I pay $9 I think for that (I THINK, I think the 6 burger packages are about $16-17...). That is still only about $3.00 per patty, so less than ordering out. But, it's way more than supermarket lean beef...at my Jewel 94-96% lean beef burgers are about $5-6 per pound....more if shopping at a Whole Foods type store.

But, the Elk is healthier, brought to me right by a farmer (Elk farmer), therefore I am supporting a great business. Also, they taste the BEST.

BOTH! Depends on my mood. But for answering the questions sake - smooth - because I would choose it more times than not over crunchy (but I still like both!)

Philly cheese steak
(the sub/hoggie type sandwhich) or a chicago italian beef Sandwhich (with au gu *the clear gravy* cheese, onions, or peppers - whichever u prefer because they are all authentic choices here in CHIcago :)

Morrighu - thanks for "clueing" me in. I am now so enlightened.

All grocery stores are not "disgusting" - maybe they are where you live. Sorry, that must suck.

Yes, stores have their issues - sanitation, etc.... But I still do nto find it acceptable. I love whole foods and will be back but I thought I should post this.

I am sorry that you have come to accept such low standards in your grocery stores..... ick....

Not me. Just my personal prefrence. We all live to different standards.

Have fun on your next grocery trip. I hope you enjoy eating your foods with rat poopies and rat hair..... mmmmm yummy :)

Not a Vivanno -  but I just tried the new lemonade slughy thing (not BRAND new, but new within the past month or so).

SOOO good. I actually had the lemonade green tea one....not as "tart" as the straight lemon one - so said the barista that recommended it after I had ordered the straight up lemonade one.

I took his advice, and LOVE it. Best freshing drink ever. More icy than the Vivanno drinks - which i have also had. I like the lemonade one way more, even if it only has one measly gram of fiber and tons of sugar. I am NOT trying to lose, so it's perfectly fine. I got a Venti one, it has 260 calories.  The straight lemonade one has 350 or something (in the venti). It's huge. I usually get the light fraps....but this is way better (are more summerish and refreshing.

Kaffwynn - I go to farmers markets every wednesday and saturday! I can however only get certain fruits and veg's there. I get others at Stanley's (fruit/veg market),  Jewel, Domonicks, and once in a while at Trader Joes, and Whole Foods.

I usually go to Whole Foods for there large selection of cheeses (which are NOT offered at other grocery stores, at least certain kinds that I love are not). And - certain packaged products, breads, canned items, meats, and other specialty items are ONLY available at whole foods.

Those I cannot buy elsewhere.... and that, that is what sucks!

hot and sour soup is so good AND low cal.....and filling (with other things to supplement it of course). For instance, at Panda Express its only 110 cal and 3 grams of fat (I think - from memory, if I am off it's very VERY close to those stats)....3 grams of fiber too. BUT - it is super high in sodium - so just drink lots of water with it (or tea).

Wonton soup is also so good and low cal/fat....about 130 cals a cup with 2-4 grams of fat depending on where its from and what kind of wontons (chicken, vegi, shrimp). This is also high in sodium though!

spring rolls are lower cal than egg rolls - panda's are about 120 cals each (memory)....3-4 grams of fat. They are fried....but pan fried, less oil than egg rolls.

Pot stickers are low fat if you order than steamed (most chinese places to BOTH steamed or pan fried pot stikers)......for about 6 pot stickers they are around 160-250 cals - for the order....about 5-8 grams of fat. Those stats DO depend on the size of the pot stickers and the the filling - but those are the averages.

Pretty much any soup is low cal/fat....ALL high in sodium thou! chinese soups are NOT creamy.....that plays into that. egg droup soup is low cal, so are most rice/veg based soups.

If you get the wonton soup - order a side of rice (brown if you can) and add it to the soup (wonton soup has a lot of broth) - it will make it more of a meal and the soup will flavor the rice (so you wont need any soy sauce).

Foods Glaceau Vitamin Water--opinions? Feb 07 2008

HMMM,.....prayforplagues...

I have tried the Walgreens version (0 cal)....it is okay tasting...not as good as the normal vitamin water that has 50 cals per serving tho....

Maybe you cannot taste the difference I suppose - but i for sure can. I can also tell the difference btween "light" or "low fat" cheese and full fat versions. I would rather fit in the full calorie versions of cheese thant he nasty light kinds *although laughing cow cheese wedges, they are wonderful...so that is the exception there!*. Also - naturally lower fat cheeses (i.e. goats milks, mozerella, etc) are also an exception, they are NATURALLY lower in fat....rather than tweaking the original to lower fat (i.e. light cheddars, etc).

Basically, my comparison between vitawater and cheese is trying to show that I would rather have the original versions (and fit them into my eating plan) than the lighter versions, in some cases....and Vitawater is one of them. I can def. tell the difference between vitawater and the walgreens 0 cal version.

Well do this - how many servings does the bag say? take that (amount of servings the bag says are in the entire bag) and then divide up the bag evenly into that many piles. each pile will have the calories tha bag lists as 2 oz.

Here is an example. say the bag says 8 servings.

Start by dividing the bag into piles, each with 1 cup.

Now - say there is still a good amount left in the bag. Continue to divide, except maybe add 1/2 cup to each already made pile. Now you ahve 8 little piles that are each 1.5 cups. If there are more noodles in the bag, continue to add to each pile.

therefore, you have _ (fill in the blank with however many servings come in the bag) piles each with the calories that the bag lists (I am guessing the bag says 180 or 220 calories per serving (per 2 oz).

Hope that helps

I can't help you out, but I too would LOVE to know this.

I bought some apple cider from our local farmers market....fresh as well.

Not sure if mine is pasturized thou....

I know apple cider has lotf of sugars (b.c its from apples - and apples have lots of sugars, albiet natural sugars!)....

So how many calories per 8 oz?

I am guessing there is zero fiber...since there is no real apple in it (other than the apple juice). the fiber is in the corse part....fiberish part, and there is none of that in apple cider...it would be weird if there was thou.....chunky apple cider? not too sure about that - haha

I am so sorry - I just now saw this thread.

I will keep your son and your family (you included, obviously) in my prayers, continously.....

Words cannot explain what I WANT to express to you. I know your pain (kindaish). I am not a mother but I lost my older brother last chrismas (he was found 2 days after Christmas, but passed away christmas day).

HOWEVER, much much much different situation than your son. My older brother was very challenged and troubled. His sporadic "disapearances" were never a surprise.

So - in your situation I have faith he will be found. Miracles are visable all over. I fell your pain, some of it at least.

As stated - your in my prayers (at the tippity top of the list)

Foods Healthy Foods FROM school? Sep 15 2007

No no NO! Those 833 calories, are, amazing for ONE WEEK. I know - I am a teacher at a K-8 school in the city (chicago). Our menu is the same - it lists monday, tues, wed, thurs, and friday lunchs across one row and then at the end of that row the nutritionals, for the WEEK. I know, trust me...many many meetings about this new menu construction (seriously, and pathetically, yes).

How so low (833 divided by 5 school days is under 200 calories! each day) you ask? Because those calorie counts are for the MAIN ENTREE...not the Sides (fruit, dessert, veggie, other, etc). So, you would be getting about 175 (or so) calories each day from ONLY the beef-a-roni, cheese quesadia, chicken ala king, etc....

Still seems kinda low, right? Well the portions of the "main entree" are not anything gargantious....they are quite modest...hence the calorie count of under 200 daily for the main.

Keep in mind you need to add on anything else you eat with it...you will need to estimate of course - since info isnt given for those :)

I would LOVE to split an order with someone...I am in Chicago.

One of us could order, the other can send the "orderer" a check for half the cost (with shipping and taxes of course) and then the "orderer" can send the "payee" half of the order (two jars, right?).

Anyone interested???

No I am not having twice what I tbought.

When you buy the box of them (from the store) the serving size is ONE FULL star crunch.

The ones your talking about (where there are two servings per cookie) are the bigger sized cookies that you usually buy individually.... Those are not the ones I have.

I can have one entire cookie for 140 calories....mmm mmm and mmm

But hell, I think if you want your little debbie treat once in awhile.. have it! You've obvoiusly planned for it, and let me tell you, you NEED to splurdge once in a while. It prevents binging and.. wel makes you happy to reward yourself once in a while (:!

It's great that your not diet-obsessed and never allowing yourself something good like ice cream or a little debbie treat. Some people ( me being one of them a while ago) Get way to hung up on whats 'allowed' and whats 'forbiden'. Please, enjoy your life.. And yes, that includes having your little debbie snack!"

Agreed, agreed and agreed! Once in a while doesnt mean every day - it also doesnt mean once a month. I allow myself one of these once every few days or once a week - when my body wants one.

I, like you, once overdid it on the calorie counting, restricting, deprivation, etc....

I am much happier (and healthier) now that I am not obsessive, and now that I allow myself treats.

Glad you're doing better too, honestly :)

Parmeson is not bad for you - no cheese is actually. It does have fat, yes, but in moderation cheese is very healthy (for most at least, unless you have a nutritional issue with it, lactose intolerant, etc...)

Parmeson is a great cheese because its lower in fat than some cheeses, and its so flavorful that you can use less than another type, yet get more flavor (so since you can use less with tons of flavor its less fat than using more of another cheese).

I eat cheese daily - yes yes full fat cheese. I also eat more than one type daily. I will have something like 2 ounces of cheddar (aged, its stronger in flavor) just for nibbeling on plain, parmeson on pasta or rice or whatever, and at least a few slices on a sandwhich, melted on bread or soemthing like that (swiss, provolone, whatever I feel like), and I maintain a very healthy weight, cholesterol, sodium intake, etc....

I am 5 feet 2.5 inches, and weight 105. I have a small body frame.

Cheese can surely fit into a healthy lifestyle...and parmeson is not "bad for you"....eating a pound of parmeson in one sitting may not be healthy on a daily basis, but eating a serving, 2, or 3 is just fine if you fit it in :)

P.S. cheese is my favorite food - so I make room for it daily....sometimes one serving, sometimes 5 servings. Great source of calcium = healthy hair, nails, skin, bones, teeth, etc....

dm84 your reply said generally nothing. Lowfat ice cream can be healthy (calcium - heard of it) and so can a chicken breast (not breaded I specified) sandwhich (add tomato and lettuce and other vegi which my stadiums - cubs and sox, offer). Also I didnt say cotton candy was healthy, please read more carefully....I said it was empty calories but wouldnt put on weight if you only eat a little (you know - enjoy oneself) and its NOT loaded with fat (no fat actually) and jsut empty calories and carbs and sugars (like I said, and no vitamins or good stuff). I also said that pretzel was nothing good but not all bad if the protion was right (no fiber, etc...but no fat and relatively low in calories if you have allowed for it in planning your day, again - all of which I said).

So, ice cream CAN be healthy, peanuts are, chicken breast sure is....hmmm wonder why you said nothing. All those foods are enjoyable to many (I like all those more than a hotdog...especialyl one from a ballpark that is loaded with fat and its the artery clogging type)...everything on my list is low in fats (bad fats at least, the nuts have fats but its the heart healthy kind). All on my list are moderate in calories (at least the portion sizes and types of preparations/proportions that I specified) and all are treats for many people.

Answers to questions like "is there anything healthy to eat at a ballpark" are much more complex than "generally, no". There are a whole lot of shades of grey (how you order things, proportions, and yes there are even healthy options just as they are (peanuts, chicken breast grilled, cracker jacks (yes yes I know added sugars, but it wont kill you...these are served in a little box, have added fiber, and not TOO high in sugar....).

Its called living - I have NO problem finding healthy options ANYWHERE I go.

And gasp - I even order the NOT HEALTHY option from time to time, and I am a healthy 105 pounds (5"2"). I have never been overweight...only more than I wanted to be for my frame. I have always been althetic and in sports and I have always been able to shop where I want and be comfortable in my clothes. Once I wised up about knowing the limits on "treats" I got even happier.

I really am not trying to be bitchy at all, not my style whatsoever, but I am so tired of people being like "AHHHH I ate a burger" - etc....its okay for a treat if you are overall eating healthy and getting all the nutrients and vitamins you need.

I mean come on - its basically all about knowing what are the limits of healthiness...healthy does not equal deprivation. troublescoming2 can surely eat healthyish at a ballgame...and if troublecoming2 wants to get an "unhealthy" treat, he/she should (as long as he/she is overall taking care of her/his body".)

Want a dog, burger, fries? What's that...you've been taking great care of your body, exercising (or even not excersizing, but you live such an active lifestyle that your daily activities are exercise in themself), and eating to live rather than living to eat? Congradulations - order youself that special treat and enjoy it :)

No good options dm84? That is way off....you obviouslly do not know the meaning  of healthy....

Now - in terms of the ehalthiest thiings to eat on the planet .....and those types of things being offered at the ball game....probably not - no. However, there are usually some sort of healthIER, or healthyish options....

Soft serve ice cream can be lowfat...ask...

Cotton candy...not healthy persay, but it is fat free....loaded with sugar yes - that is its downfall. Eat a little and you get limited calories....although keep in mind they are empty calories.

Peanuts....now these are FOR SURE healthy.....peanuts are a wonderful source of healthy fats....these are GOOD fats to eat. Your body not only likes these fats - it needs them. Plus - usually at ball games these are still in the shell...so it will take you longer to shell/eat them. Enjoy these :)

chicken sandwhiches are often an option...only order if grilled...omit any mayo. Stick to kethcup and mustard type sauces :)

Also - I usually have no problem finding cracker jacks (low fat, calorie, and a nice source of a little fiber....only like 2-4 grams but still, its something).

You can also find, usually at least, big, yummy, soft, warm pretzels....dip in mustard or cheese sauce (the cheese will ahve fat, yes, but if you trully dip (not gorge) in cheese it wont add up to too much,.,,,plus you get calcium :) hehe. therse prezels are white carbs...so not healthy in terms of vitatims and the such - but its pretty much fat free (before cheese at least)...carbs and cal's are not low...but if you stick to a regular size soft pretzel (think the ones in the freezer section at your grocery store....the size of your entire hand...an opened up hand (not a fist)).....and tis usually 170-220 calories. So again, if not too humongo in size its not too calorific....

All of these options will not make you gain weight...at least not if you've saved some of your calorie allowance for the game.

Enjoy :)

The hot and sour soup is also not bad (and it tastes so so so so good). 110 calories, 2-3 grams of fat and 3 grams of fiber (cannot remember exactly) for the 12 oz serving! And they pretty much hit the serving size spot on for the soup cause the bowl it comes in (to go bowl at least) is about 12 oz...no way to pour too much soup in that then! Really filling too. I get two soups sometimes i love it so much.

The stats for the egg drop soup wasnt bad either but I cannot remember what it was exactly....something like 130 cals, 3 fat grams per serving (again, 12 oz). There isnt that much egg in egg drop soup, that's how they keep the calories in check.

MMMM

Spring rolls are only like 160 for two of them, 5 grams of fat or something close to that. Yumy on that one too.
