| Thanks so much for the kind words, Bootser. I should check into some exercise videos. They'll probably be a lot cheaper than a new treadmill and it's always a good thing to mix up the exercise routine a bit. Thanks for the advice! :) | |||

| If you are 5'9 1/2" and weigh 120 lbs., you are underweight. I would imagine that 120 would be hard to maintain, considering that it is frighteningly thin for your height. If I were you, I'd concentrate less on trying to restrict calories so you can binge later, and worry more about getting the proper nutrition. | |||

| If you are already worried about whether or not people can tell you put on 3 lbs., then are you sure you're ready to get pregnant again? As you know, you're going to put on a heck of a lot more weight than 3 lbs. during your pregnancy. 25-35 lbs. is the recommended weight gain during a normal pregnancy, so the 3 lbs. you've gained prior to conception aren't really going to make a difference in the grand scheme of things. Frankly, if I were trying to conceive right now, I would be more concerned about making sure I'm getting the proper nutrition and vitamins (particularly folic acid). | |||
| Health & Support | Disappearing Spider Veins? | Jul 25 2007 18:24 (UTC) |

| I've got both varicose & spider veins. The spider veins aren't too bad and are not that noticeable yet, but I've actually noticed MORE spider veins since I started working out a few months ago (walking/running & strength training). I've got a few gnarly-looking varicose veins behind my right knee which popped out during my pregnancy and never went away. Every year they just look worse and worse, so I refuse to wear shorts in public or wear a short skirt without opaque tights underneath. It sucks, because otherwise I've got really nice legs (if I do say so myself). I told my husband that I want to get them lasered or injected or whatever I have to do to get rid of them, but he says that he thinks I'm extremely vain (pardon the pun) and that I shouldn't care so much about a couple of stupid veins. Easy for HIM to say. If anyone here has had the procedure done, please let me know how it went for you! | |||

| I started smoking at around age 15 (I'm 35 now), and I quit smoking for the LAST TIME about a year and a half ago (Feb. 21, 2006). Before that, I had quit once for 6 months (at age 20) and another time for 2 years (at age 25). What I FINALLY learned after a 7 year detour is that smoking really is an addiction just like drugs or alcohol and it should be treated as such. That's why I knew that this time around, I had to implement the N.O.P.E. policy: Not One Puff Ever. That's the only way the quit will stick. I can't ever let my guard down. I can't ever think, "Gee, I wonder what a cigarette would taste like after not smoking for a couple of years. " That's what did me in the last time I quit! Quitting smoking sucks, no doubt about it. It sucks and it's uncomfortable and you won't know what to do with your hands when you drive a car or talk on the phone. But it's worth every uncomfortable moment, relentless craving, temper tantrum, pair of jeans that you can't squeeze into anymore, or crying jag. The bottom line is that you will get over it. You have to relearn how to do all of those things without a cigarette in your hand, but it really doesn't take that long. When I quit, I remember thinking to myself, "I'll never have fun again". Isn't that ridiculous? Cigarettes always seemed to make every situation that much more enjoyable, but you know what? Now I don't miss it one bit. I like feeling healthy and smelling fresh and clean. Smokers STINK. They do. I like the way I can take a deep breath when I wake up in the morning and my lungs don't hurt anymore. I like the fact that my son is PROUD OF HIS MOTHER. I like the fact that I've given myself a new lease on life and that I've greatly reduced my chances of developing a smoking-related disease. I don't want my son to watch me die of lung cancer. I am a nicotine addict and I always will be, but that's ok. I choose not to smoke ever again and every single day it gets easier for me to make that choice. To all of you smokers, each and every one of you can quit. All it takes is will power, plain and simple. If you're thinking about quitting, I found a website that had some great forums (similar to this site). Check it out: www.njquitnet.com . Good luck!
p.s. I did gain some weight when I quit smoking, but I weigh less now than I did then. AND I'M HEALTHIER!!!!! |

| Olivia, I do the same thing. After a long day at work and an 80 mile commute EACH WAY (yes, that's right), I love to go for a 4-mile run as soon as I get home to blow off steam, drink a bunch of water, take a shower, have one (ok, 2) gin & tonics, eat a light dinner, watch a little TV & go to bed. I quit smoking a year and a half ago, I'm eating super-healthy, and exercising 6 days per week. I loves me my G&T's, so I allow for those calories (about 250....yikes!) each day, but they are WELL WORTH IT for me. Am I an alcoholic? I don't think so. Could it turn into a problem for me one day? Sure, if I don't set parameters for myself like I do in every aspect of my life. Would I like to drink less? Yes, of course, but I ENJOY it and I believe I deserve to have at least one guilty pleasure. I think it would become a problem if I get to the point where I can't stop at 2 and "need" to have more. So far, so good. ;) | |||

| I just had this conversation with my husband last night. He was SHOCKED that I wasn't logging in my food/exercise for the day or posting something in one of the forums and I explained to him that I'm "trying to cut down" on CC. Although CC has been a tremendous source of inspiration, motivation, and information, I realized that I've been dedicating waaaaaay too much time to it. I've been visiting this site at least twice daily for a little over 2 months now and I've lost 13 lbs. I believe I've gotten to the point where I know what I'm supposed to eat in order to stay within my caloric range and I can more or less "guesstimate" what my caloric intake and deficits are for the day. I'm trying to wean myself, but tonight I kind of freaked out and had to run to the computer to log everything into the food & exercise log just to make sure that I had a big enough deficit (which I did). Gotta fight that urge! I need to do this on my own now, because this is a lifelong journey and I can't be logging in every day for the rest of my life (although it's tempting). | |||

| End it now because IT IS NOT WORTH IT!!! These situations never turn out well and if you are thinking about any kind of "future" with this guy at all, just remember that if he's cheating on his current wife, he will undoubtedly cheat on you too. He sounds like a real slimeball, and I'm sure this isn't the first time he's done this either. If I were you, I'd get the heck out of that place and get tested for STD's. Also, these kinds of relationships have a way of becoming common knowledge among everyone in the office and/or the entire company and you will most likely end up with a bad reputation. Nobody at work will ever respect you after something like this. That said, if you plan on staying there, don't expect any promotions. People in your situation are like kryptonite to any HR department. | |||

| I know what you're going through. I have been eating waaaay too much over the past few days. We had relatives staying with us for a few days, so of course that means I had tons of food in the house. Food that my husband and I don't eat anymore (he's trying to lose weight too). From breakfast, to lunch, to cocktail hour, to dinner...we have been eating non-stop since Wednesday! At first, we tried to resist but then we just kind of looked at each other and said, "Look at us! We're miserable!" We decided that we couldn't just sit around and watch everyone eating so we might as well enjoy ourselves too. We also didn't exercise at all over the past few days either, so that just adds insult to injury! Every once in a while, I think it's ok to indulge a little bit, but my husband and I definitely went overboard. Our guests left yesterday, but we had a birthday party to go to today for a friend of ours and, of course, the drinks and goodies were flowing. I had a great workout this morning and felt like I could just start over again, but once I walked into the party I had a frozen margarita in one hand and a pig-in-a-blanket in the other! So now I'm telling myself that TOMORROW is another day! :) | |||

| Canned tuna is repulsive. The smell alone is enough to make me boot. I also can't tolerate Jell-o. It's the texture. Pretty much anything gelatinous will make me wretch! There is also nothing more disgusting than homemade pudding with that nasty "pudding skin" on top. OMG, if I was being interrogated by the FBI or the CIA, all they would have to do is threaten to force-feed me pudding skin and I would tell them whatever they wanted to know. :) | |||
| The Lounge | Women with children, should I have a baby? | Jul 01 2007 20:58 (UTC) |

| EXCELLENT advice Talyah!!! I couldn't agree more. As wonderful as children are and as much as we can't imagine our lives without them now, it should be a lifelong committment from BOTH the mom and the dad. If one parent ends up not being 100% committed to raising the child, then it can be a very difficult path to walk for the single parent (as I'm sure many single moms would agree). I had to laugh when you mentioned that people shouldn't romanticize the experience by watching A Baby Story. It's so true, because that show only shows the "sunshine and lollipops" side of babies. For example, my son SCREAMED 24-HOURS A DAY for the first 4 months of his life (he had severe gastric reflux), which on top of having PPD, was almost more than I could bear. Looking at my son now, it was worth every second of it all, but man, was it hard to go through at the time! :) | |||

| People go INSANE over my spinach recipe, which is the easiest thing in the world to make. In a large skillet, saute 1 fat garlic clove (chopped) in a tablespoon of olive oil. After it sizzles for about a minute, add a 10 oz. bag of baby spinach, a couple of handfuls at a time. When one handful begins to wilt, add another, and so on until all of the spinach has been incorporated. When all of the spinach has wilted down, sprinkle a little bit of salt (to taste) and fresh ground pepper over it and give it a stir. Serve immediately, or cover tightly to keep it hot until serving. Enjoy! | |||

| Yet another case of education "up the ying-yang", but no common sense at all. It's a real shame that M.D. degrees are handed out to some of the biggest morons out there. They've had their noses in books their whole lives, but unfortunately don't possess even minimal competency in practical knowledge. However, it won't stop them from spewing their ridiculous theories about subjects which they know very little about. Obviously nutrition isn't his specialty, but he likes to hear himself talk. I would agree with anyone else who has said to seek the counsel of a nutritionist if you want advice/feedback from someone who knows what they're talking about. :) | |||

| My digital scale will tell me several different weights depending upon how my weight is shifted. If my left hip juts out to the left a bit, I can make myself at least 3 lbs thinner! On fat days, I will try to convince myself that I'm not "shifting to the left" while I'm standing on the scale. :) | |||

| I lived in San Diego for 5 years and one of the best things about SD was the Mom & Pop taco shops that were on every corner. Whenever I visit my friends in SD, the first thing they do is drive me straight from the airport to Aliberto's Taco Shop in PB (Pacific Beach) for a carne asada burrito. That is probably the best thing I have EVER eaten in my entire life. A close second would be the In N' Out Burger double-double with grilled onions. Good Lord, does So Cal know how to eat or what? | |||

A very ripe, gorgeous tomato in one hand and a salt shaker in the other (yeah, yeah, the sodium...I know) Dark chocolate with a smear of Skippy creamy peanut butter on top. Mmmmm.... that one goes back to my childhood (when I was a beanpole and it didn't matter what I ate!) Bread and butter, crackers & cheese Do I ever give in? Only the pickles and the tomato/salt shaker thing. If I need to have chocolate, I'll grab a fudgsicle, a low-sugar, low-fat chocolate pudding or a vanilla pudding with a squirt of Hershey's dark chocolate syrup. It takes the edge off! |

| I am between 5'10" and 5'11", have a small frame, and currently weigh 155 lbs. In the past, I have been as low as 135 and I had to STARVE myself to get there. Unless you are striving to be a supermodel with a stick-thin figure and zero curves, my advice to you is to be happy with 145, exercise regularly (cardio and strength training) and eat a healthy, balanced diet. If you go up or down a couple of pounds, so be it. Your body will tell you the weight it wants to maintain. For me, my body doesn't like to go below 150. Until I started strength training, that disturbed me. Now I understand that a healthy, fit and toned body requires a few extra pounds because of the lean muscle mass. | |||
| Weight Loss | I Have a Question | Jun 26 2007 01:55 (UTC) |

| Muscle weighs more than fat and takes up less space, so it's quite possible that although the scale isn't showing you what you think it should based upon how your clothes fit and people's comments about how much thinner you look, you could still be losing a significant amount of fat (and inches) and be building lean muscle mass. Obviously you're on the right track, so throw the scale out the window. :) | |||

| Cottage cheese fills me up A LOT more than yogurt. If you don't care for the consistency of cottage cheese (which I totally understand), either buy "whipped" cottage cheese (Friendship makes a delicious one), or if you can't find the whipped variety in the store, just whiz up a bit of it in a small food processor to break down the curds. I love to mix garlic & herbs and a little salt & pepper into my cottage cheese and spread it on whole wheat Wasa crackers. Yum! | |||

| Sorry to hear that you don't have low-fat, low-sugar, flavored yogurt in the UK. Here in the U.S., I like Dannon Light N' Fit. For a 5 oz. container it's 40 cal, 0g fat, and only 5g of sugar (which is very little). I would say that honey and even some fruits have considerably more sugar than that, so don't be fooled by seemingly "healthy" alternatives, which can pack a ton of sugar themselves. | |||

| Fluffy349, I just want to say that although I'm not big on plastic surgery, I COMPLETELY understand why you had breast augmentation after having 2 kids. Being a mother myself, I know the toll that pregnancy and nursing can take on the ol' funbags. :)Through diet and exercise, you can get your body to do just about anything you want it to, EXCEPT for firming up loose skin. Hopefully with your new implants, they will retain their shape throughout your current pregnancy and far beyond. | |||
| Health & Support | Getting panicky about eating... | Jun 21 2007 20:39 (UTC) |
|
| Yes, congrats on your tremendous achievement! At this point, you obviously know exactly what it takes to lose weight, but it sounds to me like you now need to learn how to maintain it safely and with as little angst as possible. However, I thoroughly agree with your friends and family who are urging you to put back some pounds. 150 is way too thin for a 6'0" male, and I believe that once you bring yourself up to a reasonable weight for your height, it will become much easier for you to maintain that weight. Right now you are trying to maintain a weight that is too low for your frame, which I would imagine is quite difficult to do. I realize that you are worried about getting heavy again, but if you keep up a cardio & strength training routine and eat sensibly, you really shouldn't worry about that. At this point, you've been counting calories for so long that I bet you know the calorie/fat content of just about every food there is! That said, I wouldn't obsess about counting calories anymore. From this site, you can get a ballpark figure of the calories you'll need to maintain your weight (which should at least be 170, not 150), and I'm sure you already know how many calories you burn during exercise, so I would just "loosely" do the math in your head if you think you may be over/under where you should be on a particular day. Hey, you've already done your "hard time" counting calories and busting your butt to lose all that weight. Now is the time to enjoy your life (which includes good food!). Also remember that you won't put the weight back on overnight. Eat sensibly, and if you begin to go a few pounds over your comfortable weight, then just scale back a bit. I hope this helps. Good luck to you! :) | |||
