Health & Support anyone here ever had shingles Jul 10 2008

I had them when I was 49 (now 56) and mine was definitely caused by stress, undiagnosed depression and just a general emotional breakdown.  That'll do a number on your immune system!  Then I had the post-herpetic neuralgia afterwards that lasted for a couple of months.  In a way, it was a good thing I got them, because it finally made me seek the treatment I should have gotten long ago.  Now I'm trying to live my life so that I don't ever get them again.  Take care of yourselves, all of you!  Be well.

I used a Stairmaster machine for the first time today--it seems like it will give me a good hard workout, but I am concerned about the effect on my 56-year-old knees.  I currently do not have any problems at all with them, but I wouldn't want to do anything that will show up in the future.  Any opinions about the Stairmaster?  Thanks!

For lunch I just finished 2 huge slices of grocery store-made chocolate cake with thick, thick icing.  And like others have said here, I feel sick!  This is what comes of being good 98% of the time, depriving myself, then going--literally--hogwild on something that's high in sugar and fat.  Whew!  Well, tomorrow's another day, another start at moderation and exercise.  Happy New Year, everybody!

I don't know enough about the science of calories--at least for a man--but it sounds like you've been, and currently are, under quite a bit of stress.  If the stress is chronic, it can release a hormone--I think it's called cortisol?--that can not only stop you from losing weight, but can also make you gain weight.  Several years ago, I went through an extended period of depression, and I gained weight even though I still was going to the gym.  And if your body gets used to having that stress hormone in your system, it can take a while to get rid of it.  Maybe add 20 minutes of meditation at the beginning or end of the day?  Or whatever makes you feel calmer inside.  That's just my 2 cents, and it's probably worth every penny.
Fitness Am I being paranoid? Accuracy of caloric burn on machines Aug 24 2007

Just as an experiment the other day, I put in my weight as 15 pounds less on the treadmill, and still got the same overblown calorie count, as compared with the monitor.  I'm going to keep doing that until the cal count on the machine matches my monitor number, then see where I am.  I'll post the results here.  (BTW, I got a Polar F6 monitor and am very pleased with it.)

I was also suspicious of the readings of the exercise machines, so I bought a heart rate/calorie monitor.  I plugged in a lot of info about me into the monitor--height, weight, age, etc.--and found that the treadmill climber I was using was about 100 calories too high.  Even if you put your weight into the machine, it's still completely inaccurate.

Erinzz--I originally posted the question about heart monitors--I use an incline treadmill, the kind you can raise to a high % grade.  Yesterday I did an interval workout on it: 35 minutes total; 5 minutes at a moderate clip (25% grade at 2.5 MPH), then 2 minutes intense (35% at 3.5 MPH for 2 minutes), then repeat the sequence until 30 minutes has elapsed; then a 5 minute cool-down.  I weigh 115, 5'5", female, age 55.  The machine said I burned 380 calories, my monitor said 233.  As far as heart rate, the machine and my monitor agreed on the same numbers.  I was really surprised at the difference in the calories--while I figured the machine might be off a little, I didn't think it would be by so much.  I've only had the monitor for a few days, so it'll be interesting to see if I keep getting similar results.  (P.S. You can sometimes find used HR monitors on Amazon.)  Hope this helps.

I agree about the reason for the higher calorie count on gym machines.  It keeps you coming back.  It's like all the "thin" mirrors a lot of women's clothing stores are using--you look so much better in them and then you're more likely to purchase the outfit.  Even clothing sizes--I think it's called vanity sizing--are scaled way down.  I've always considered that I wore anywhere from a size 8 to 10 in most things--now at the shop where I buy most of my clothing, I'm getting into size 2's, and even they're a little big.  Ridiculous!  Do they really think we won't find out???

No, that is the news I wanted to hear, because now I know I can use the monitor to much more effectively keep track of my fitness and overall health.  Thank you!
