The last book I couldn't put down was "the 100 years of solitude" by Marquez.

Maybe it doesn't have very deep meaning, but it's very absorbing.:)

Alibsam thanx for the link.

I speak Greek,English,German and French.Except for German everything else I found pretty easy.I think you should take up Italian if you like. It's easier than Spanish and more melodic. But also it depends on what you want to do after your finish uni.

That's nothing! My friends tonight ganged up and accused me of what?Having a good healthy nutrition! Not even diet! This is so ridiculous!Just because YOU dont' care about what you put in your mouth, doesn't mean I don't too!And just because you think I'm fine,it doesn't mean that I should stop taking care of myself and pay attention to my diet.

so,yesterday I had my body fat measured at the gym.I got a 6% loss from May..Now it's at 25%.:(

I talked to the dietician of the gym,and he told me that 25% is normal and ok,and that 20% that I'm aiming for is way too low,and I will have problems with my cycle.22% he says is the least I should aim for and the most a 4-6 pounds loss. What do you think?? Undecided It's 20% really that low??

Anyway,I will try for a 2% loss this month,though I really doubt that I will achieve it.lol

I have bought:

30 euros Exercise bike

30 euros digital food scale

15 euros digital scale

160 euros asics running shoes

20 euros barbells and exercise ball

It may sound expensive, and overmaterialistic but they really helped me,getting of the couch and get moving.I first get excited for the new item, and then I don't want all the money to be for nothing.

Sad I know, but at least it worked for me,losing 40 pounds.

hello..I know it's very late now,but can I join this group please? :)

Over the last months I have lost 40 pounds, and though I'm really near my goal weight now(9 pounds),I have found myself still left with a high BF%.So..I have decided, that I don't want to go so much by the scale anymore, but with bodyfat and the mirror.

I am 5'2 119 pounds and.. 24% BF.:(

I plan to join a gym this week and I have come up with this plan:

3 x 45 mins heavy lifting + 20 mins HIIT (running)

2 x 1-1.5 hour swimming (slow pace)

1 x 45 mins power yoga

What do you think?Does this look ok?..

I don't want to be one of those thin and weak girls,I want to be lean and strong!I'm sick and tired of the flab and it's about time to seriously get rid of it!

My goal BF is 20% by the end of 2008 (hopefully a lot sooner :p ).Hopefully we can support and motivate each other in this war of the fat!:)

ps.I love 300!!:D

thanx kamtastic!:) Good luck to you too!

Hey,it was just a day,not big deal!Just don't weigh yourself tomorrow morning so as not to get dissapointed from the water retention.:p

Tomorrow it's always a new day,a new start.:) ..Also,maybe this "bad" day can actually turn out to be good.Personally I have found, that such "feasts" can boost my metabolism,so if the next days I am back to normal and I don't pig out again,I end up losing lbs!:) I hope this will be for you too.

hi,I know I'm a little late but hopefully not too late to join this great shorties' group.I am 20,greek and currently 119 pounds down from 160.

I have always moaned about being short-5'2 but the truth is,weight loss appears sooner and greater on us.And in the end we can always wear high heels.:p My GW is 52kgs or 115 pounds, which I will reach,if everything goes as usual and according to plan by the end of September-start of Octomber.I usually lose 1-2 kgs a month(2-4 pounds) which judging from all the above it may sound too little for you,but I keep telling myself slow and steady wins the race.:) I think after reaching 115 pounds,I will stop going by the scale and start going by body fat.I have 24% (down from around 35%!I know, too much lol ) which it's borderline normal.

I want a flat tummy, and to be more toned so that's my basic goal nowadays.I wish you all good luck and always keep trying. You're going to get there in the end!:)

right, you pay for your health care through taxes (i'm in canada, and it's the same here).  so given that obese people are likely to use more health care resources (but don't pay more taxes), might it be reasonable to say that everyone has a responsibility to try to maintain a healthy weight?  and might it be reasonable to make some attempt to hold people accountable to that responsibility?

obviously this can't be done in the same way in every country, because of the different sensibilities and expectations of responsibility in different cultures.  but i think some standard of accountability is reasonable in any context.

No,if for the general good ppl's private rights and freedoms are invaded. We pay the same and we demand even the overweight or the disabled to be treated-for example the disabled should be excluded from the free care-system because they will demand more money?

We are very sensitive about human rights and personal freedoms. When they put cameras for traffic in Athens' main streets a coupld of years ago there were huge riots and ppl still protest. We just don't function like that.

A guideline-no problem.But forcing ppl-fining-companies taking measures to slim down employees ..definitely not acceptable.[hey I have to go-too late here-nice having a good debate :) Cya! ]

that's the point, clharr: in most countries, it's the norm for the government to be highly involved in health.  i'm actually surprised that dimitra is taking this position, because greece has socialized medicine.

but then, i think greece also has a high proportion of overwieght and obese people.  not high like the US, but higher than most of europe.

Yes,what you say it's true.We have free health system-though of the lowest quality - and high obese/overweight proportion in children. But you see,it's all a matter of seeing things.I (and I'm sure most greeks)find it..normal and matter of course that our government pays for our health up to the higher percentage possible(of the treatment) and since that fact is for us SURE I guess we find the government trying to cut the expenses by forcing the citizens to diet and count their waist ridiculous and outrageous.Since we all pay our big fat taxes-we demand to take what we pay for as we are-without changing.

Aaargh I hope you understand I explained it terribly.[also just my opinion but I believe that a lot other europeans would have the same opinion]

yeah, ginger, believe it or not, it's not about fighting for me either.  it just seems stupid for a bunch of people to state their opinions and let those opinions bounce around like ping-pong balls with no real interaction or effect when the possibility exists to actually learn from each other.

unfortunately, a lot of people (dare i say young people?) aren't interested in learning.  they just want to make noise.

I am sorry but judging from this thread, someone tries to learn new things and peacefully exchange opinions and the other is attempting to patronize, judge and can't accept that some ppl see things differently.

Original Post by alibuch:

dimitra- From what I've noticed here, it's mostly just weight. But complete strangers have no problem asking you personal questions- from what I've experienced here. But I was warned about the weight thing beforehand from a friend who lived here a few years ago. You just adjust and get used to it. I have a friend here who is 5'6 and probably 120lbs and she gets called fat. haha It's just differing standards I guess.

yes hehe that must result in many awkward incidents/and then ppl are complaining here because some poor soul calls them pregnant!:p

trying to reason this is probably because the whole overweight/obese or "metabo" thing in Japan is relatively a new thing I guess..ppl are not used to see fat people and the whole idea of someone being overweight could seem funny to them.

No, I see why you think it's wrong. But I'm telling you, I live in an Asian country and this is not a huge deal. A random stranger would call you out on being overweight.

really??damn this must be scary.:/ lol Here we sure judge just more behind your back than in you face. It's that the case with other things too or just weight?

hey I'm not here to fight-and I can understand that my opinion would probably differ if I was japanese.(and that's still speculation) But..was the purpose of this thread to judge as japanese? In every forum I post,I offer my honest neutral opinion from MY standpoint-if you wanted a japanese one,go ask japaneses. Also,I don't judge other's insights it's their prerogative to have them and to be different from mine. It's a small world we all have to co-operate to make this work.:)

Human rights? Really? Why don't you focus on real human rights violations like the genocide in Darfur, etc? These people are getting their waists measured at annual doctor's appointments and told to lose weight if necessary. If you're overweight in the States, your doctor tells you to lose weight. I see no difference...

hahaha Nice speculation there.

Where's udokier? He lives in Japan... maybe he can give some insight as to what's going on... since the article said this has been happening for two years already.

ccrun, that's the difference between a communal society like japan and an individualistic one like the US.  in a communal society, staying healthy is seen as part of your obligation to the rest of society; in the US, you're considered responsible only to you and yours.  personally, i think the former concept makes more sense.

and ali, you're right - 35" is by no means tiny.  i'm 5'8" and a good fifteen pounds overweight, and my waist is only 30".

The japanese law doesn't say you must stay healthy does it?Therefore it's not obligation. Therefore I still believe it's violating personal rights.

I can understand, that japan society is different than the greek one I live in,but human rights are human rights.

But noone forces me to take my blood pressure!Noone forces my company to measure me AND my family.Noone fines my company if they don't.They don't force me to go on a diet. These japanese don't have a CHOICE.I'm sorry but I don't find it normal.

Weight Loss Embarassing moments Jun 12 2008

Original Post by katepoo:

My most embarassing 'fat' moments happened in Greece. I wasn't THAT big at the time (5'7", 165 lbs ish) but a lot of the skinny-European-type people were kind of rude. When I tried to order more tzatziki and pitas, a waiter leaned over and said, "You know that is very...uh... fattening, right?" with a glance at my stomach and a "fat" hand gesture (hard to explain, haha). And another time we were dancing with these traditional Greek dancers at a dinner thing, and as a funny joke at the end of the dance they lifted all the girls up over their shoulders. Oh, and by all of the girls, I mean my three friends...The guy I was with (very embarassingly) made a few attempts to lift me up and couldn't do it. So I lifted him (ish), hehe

Ah well, I just try to laugh the stupid things off...and, of course, lose weight :)

Oh God..what an ****.Greek men ..and so you know Greece has one of the highest childhood obesity rates in Europe..

aaahh I fully understand you.I'm also 5'2'' and mostly sendentary especially now during semester exams all I do is sit and study.I eat an average of 1200 cals and all that for a loss of only 3 pounds per month-if I am lucky.:( I' am amazed at how much my friend who is 5'11 is eating everyday (and junk food) and still manages to stay a very lean 148 pounds.

BUT at least, when I lose as much as 7 pounds I drop a pant size.;) People actually can't believe I've only lost 31 pounds it looks so much more.

Weight Loss how did you feel while you were losing Jun 10 2008
22:42 (UTC)

I have lost a total of 31 pounds from 5'2'' and 159 to 128 as of this week :D

The first 10 pounds are the easiest to lose,I lost them in 1 1/2 month and I didn't even count calories properly then. But from then on it gets harder and harder now I lose an average of 3 pounds per month.:( When I was losing the first ,I didn't notice any big difference and I was even suprised that my friends and even random people were commenting on my weight loss. I only noticed as I was dropping pant sizes. Really even now,the best indicator of weight loss for me is the clothes.

I also wasn't cold quite the opposite I was feeling all the time warm in the middle of the winter which isn't normal for me :? but now that we have summer and I'm down to 128 I start feeling cold sometimes.I guess I am just weird.:/

Hey,a group for me!! I am 157 cm(or 5'2) ,20 years old and currently 61.5 kilos (or 136 pounds).Over the last year I've lost 24 pounds down from 160 and it has been a rather slow, tiring and exhausting process first and foremost towards a healthier lifestyle.

Being short,I find it very difficult to lose weight, but when I do lose weight it shows a lot and after 2-3 kilos(4-6 pounds) I am down a pant size!No one of my friends could believe I had only lost 24 pounds!:p

Weight Loss Im not complaining, but I have a wierd question.... Apr 15 2008
14:56 (UTC)
11

it's normal, that your stomach starts to shrink after a while of much less food.Though only 2 weeks, you said you've been dieting seems too little.

One year ago, before I started dieting,I could really eat a whole pizza on my own in the evening coupled with 2-3 cokes...Now one year of dieting later and yesterday,I went jogging in the evening for 30 mins, and because I was feeling hungry and had to eat back my exercise calories, ate a chicken schnitzel 130grams,a small bowl of carrot salad and half a cup of rice and I felt that I was going to throw up!Seriously,I couldn't sleep because of the stomach ache.

I suggest you should eat around 1200 calories every day even if you find it difficult.Maybe 1000 one day that you can't eat any more, and 1400 the next-this will help boosting your metabolism too!Try eating foods with more calories but..smaller-which will take less space in your stomach. With under 1000 calories a day, every day, even if you do not starve yourself, but you will definitely slow down your metabolism and your diet will not have the same results.
