Weight Loss 'Flu Fast'! - Is it wrong? Aug 13 2007

Hey Zeebi,

Whatever gets you through the flu, right?  ;-p

Keep drinking that water!

(edited to add:  and congrats on the end of your plateau)

Good Monday morning!

Tonia, sounds like you had a fun and social weekend.  Drink a lot of water (after you get in the water) today!

Di, I did not do well this weekend either.  Yesterday for dinner I had pizza, mozzarella sticks, and potato chips.   (I went to a friend's house to watch a game.)  But like you, I had a great time visiting.  That's the thing, right?

So...report for weekend:  Met exercise goals, did not meet nutrition goals.  Consequence:  vacuum under furniture today.  Ugh.

Goal for Monday:  1200 calories, 1 workout, pushups.

Consequence:  will think of that later....

Biggest challenge:  meeting micronutrient needs after such an indulgent Sunday.  Need to eat foods with lots of phytochemicals and fiber today.

Have a good one!

 Hey fairhairedchild,

I noticed that your exercise routine works out the lower body a lot.  Have you read the book "Escape Your Shape?"  It doesn't recommend elliptical machines for "spoon" shapes.  Here's a link:

Aw, Tonia.  You've been working really hard lately - chin up!

Report for Wednesday:  Met goals, no consequences.

Goals for Thursday:  1350 calories, 2 workouts, pushups.

Biggest challenge:  I've been craving chocolate lately....

Report for yesterday:  stayed within goals; no consequence today.

Today's goal:  1400 calories, 2 workouts, 40 pushups.

Biggest challenge:  drinking enough water on such a hot summer day.

Good evening everyone!  Just checking in for tomorrow....

Monday report:  Stayed within calorie and exercise goals.

Tuesday goals:  1400 calories, 2 workouts, pushups.

Possible consequence: vacuuming underneath all the furniture (I've had this looming over me for a while & it seems to be working!)

Biggest Challenge:  motivating to exercise in the heat.

Have a great Tuesday!

Hey everyone!  Ohio45, the weekends can be really tricky.  But I'm really glad you ate something when you felt weak.

Di, I'm doing well, thanks for asking.  I've been working out twice per day too and it's really been making a difference.  I think I need to dive in and start weight training though.  Your outfit sounds pretty and versatile.

Vicstudentoria, julia_rose and elabar, nice to see some new ... er.... faces(?) on this board.

Thanks for the snack tips, mburns!

Tonia, keep us posted to how your new tweaked plan goes.  I'm still trying to "be good" on weekends, although lately I've allowed myself to drink wine and beer without beating myself up about it.  I have an iced tea brewer so I always have a batch of green tea on hand for when I need something cold.

I've decided to do double workouts every day and up my calories a bit.  We'll see how that goes!

Weekend report:  stayed within goals, no consequences.  Played a lot of early morning tennis (two hours on Sunday!) so I feel good, if a little sore today.

Today's goals:  1400 calories, 2 workouts, 40 pushups.

Biggest challenge:  drinking that water.

Have a good Monday!

Way to go on the 5 pounds, Marie!  I weighed myself this morning and did not lose but I am optimistic since it is my TOTM and last month I lost a pound the week after.  So fingers crossed.

Report for Tuesday and Wednesday:  Stayed within my goals, do not have to vacuum under all the furniture.

Goals for today:  1200 calories, 2 workouts, pushups.  Same consequence.

Biggest challenge:  Not eating all the Kit Kats in the house due to TOTM. :-P

Good morning!

Tonia, well, the oven needed it but I didn't have to like it!  You had a great result on your swim time - I'm really happy for you.

Ohio45, it sounds like a good idea to drink water to offset any excess salt from the weekend.

Di, I hope the back to school planning is going smoothly.

cc1170, I eat lots of high fiber foods to stay within the calorie range. Fiber and water seem to do the trick....

Anyway, Monday report:  Stayed within calorie goals, did 1 workout and pushups.

Tuesday goals:  1350 calories, 2 workouts (played tennis this morning, so one done!), 40 pushups.

Consequence:  vacuuming under furniture.

Challenge:  It is hot and humid today, so hydration again.

Have a great day!

Good morning!

Not much time this morning, so:

Sunday report:  drank too much wine and did not meet calorie goals.  Will clean the oven today.

Monday goals:  1250 calories, 1 workout, pushups.

Consequence for not meeting goals:  vacuum house, under furniture (not just around).  Time for heavy lifting!

Challenge:  hydration.

Tonia, it's 10 am where I am - so I'm guessing you're doing your Tri right now......you are awesome!  I hope you get a celebration drink afterwards.

Mburns, thanks for reposting Amy's plan.  It's your last day with your in-laws, yes?  Food choices notwithstanding, I hope it was a nice visit but that you can get back into your old routine soon.

Ohio45, congratulations on your weight loss so far!  I think you're doing great.  Good luck this weekend - weekends are a "red zone" for me too.

Di, great job on the -4 pounds and hope you had enough ventilation when you stripped your cabinets!

Amy, when do you want to put the plan in action?

cc1170, I know it's frustrating - it's frustrating for me too.  When I went to my friend's wedding a couple weeks ago, I fell off the wagon and promptly put on weight.  It's just so easy to put it on.  I've shifted my mind set lately regarding eating habits and exercise.  Instead of thinking that these things are tools to achieve a goal, I've been thinking about how good a nutritious diet and regular, vigorous exercise are for my health in the long term.  It's a small change, but it keeps me from feeling deprived or tortured.  Instead, I feel like I'm doing something good for myself and my future self.  Anyway, I'm glad you can join us and hope you continue posting.

Report for Friday:  Ohio45, I am pleased to tell you that going out did not derail my diet last night!  I alternated club soda with alcoholic drinks and ate a light, sensible dinner before I went out so I survived Friday okay.  Met calorie and exercise goals.

Goal for Saturday:  1400 calories, 2 workouts, pushups.

Consequence for not meeting goals:  clean those ovens.

Biggest challenge:  going out this afternoon; must keep away from snacks.

Have a great Saturday, everyone, and Tonia, hope your Tri was as fabulous as you are!

Hey Amy!  That is an ambitious plan.  I'm willing to give it a go, but I think it should be on another thread, so that 1) we can keep on keeping on in this thread and 2) other CCers might want to join in the plan.

That said, I'm interested to see the plan in action.  I've never done anything that ambitious before, but we'll see!

Tonia, I think that having an audience come to look inside my appliances happened in a nightmare once.  I think I could handle peeking in the oven, but if it was the refrigerator I'd have to slink away and hide! :-p

And....Good Luck, ohio45!  Glad you could join us.

So I'll just do things like I've always done -

Report for Thursday:  Met goals, do not have to clean ovens.

Goals for Friday:   1300 calories, 1 workout, pushups.

Biggest challenge:  going out tonight, of course.  *sigh*

Have a great Friday, everyone!

Steph, congrats on the 4 pounds!  I think that's the magic number today.

Mburns, hope work today surprises you in good ways.

Short on time today, so:

Report for Wednesday:  Met all goals, do not have to clean ovens.

Goal for Thursday:  1400 calories, 2 workouts, 40 pushups.

Biggest challenge:  I'm going to a movie tonight and my husband always gets popcorn.

Hugs all around!

Hello!

Amy, you are such an inspiration!  Are you going to keep at losing weight before the big day?

Linden, you mentioned in your post that your workouts made you hungry, which derailed your calorie consumption.  Maybe you were thirsty - a lot of experts say that the two feelings can be confused with each other.

Di, I've been listening to the Fitness Rocks podcasts almost obsessively during my hikes.  The good doctor really researches and reviews fitness/health issues and has a lot of insight on the specific effects of diet and exercise and chronic diseases, bones, strength, supplements, etc.  I really recommend them.

Tonia, I used to live in Florida - I remember going late-night crabbing but I've never been scalloping.  Sounds like a blast!

Mburns, good for you for recognizing that you needed to leave your old job.  Hope the new one is more fulfilling.

Okay:

Weigh-in:  Down 1 pound from last week so I'm at -4, which is where I was at 3 weeks ago, but I'm glad to be back on track.  Huzzah!

Report for Tuesday:  Completed all my goals, do not have to clean oven and microwave oven.

Goal for Wednesday:  1300 calories, 1 workout, pushups.

Consequence for not reaching goals:  clean ovens.

Biggest challenge:  Eating well during the day to offset the burgers that my fella plans on grilling tonight.

Good work, everyone!  Thanks for being part of such a great support system!  (Hugs all around)

Hi linden!  I like to think that if the weight comes off slowly that means that it will probably stay off.  Looks like you did a double workout today, which is what some of us have been doing, with generally good results.  Did you make sure to drink enough water before and after your walk and bike rides?

Amy girl, you are so motivating!  I'm always impressed with how energized and analytical you are.  But I guess you do that sort of thing for a living, so it makes sense that you'd be good at it!

Do you listen to podcasts?  (You don't need an mp3 player b/c you can listen to them online, but I like to listen to them while I'm hiking.)

Fitpod and Exercise Radio are two podcasts that have music at particular bpms (beats per minute) so you can choose how fast you want to go.

I also like listening to the Fitness Rocks podcast.  It's a doctor who reads medical literature and then produces podcasts about health, fitness, nutrition, etc.  He's very informative and interesting.

Anyway, the doctor had a podcast I thought you would find interesting:

"How Intensity Affects Exercise Benefits"

Cheers!

Hey all!  Thought you might be interested in the following link from CNN:

"Sneaky little slim-down tricks"

Di, your shoulder might not be used to the repetitive motion yet.  Try this:  when you hit the ball, make sure that you pivot your core with the stroke so that the power comes from your body and not your arm.  Also, take lots of tiny steps to get in better position so that you don't have to stretch too much to reach the ball.   And here's the best tip that my dad gave me:  when you're hitting a backhand, point your front shoulder (your right shoulder if you're right handed) exactly where you want the ball to go.  It will head in the right direction.

Okay, to work for real!  Have a great day!

Mcp, where are you?  I miss you.

Tonia, thanks for noticing the tennis improvement.  I played for an hour this morning and feel rejuvenated instead of winded/wiped out.  What kind of dog do you have?  Mine's a lab mix, and when we're in the woods I let her go off leash, which she just loves.  She's such a softie - like Ferdinand the bull, she tries to make friends with all the tiny woodland creatures she meets, but they of course think she's trying to eat them.

So...you're weeding three flower beds today...has your husband caught on to the fact that all your consequences directly benefit him? ;-)

Welcome steph!  I'm really glad you're eating more than 900 calories a day.  If you only eat fruits and vegs, it's hard to make over 1000, but remember that dried fruits and nuts are easy high-calorie, nutritious snacks.

Mburns, I couldn't believe your dinner options last night.  I mean, it's really nice that your MIL wanted to make dinner, but wow.  Hopefully there was a salad or something light on the side.

Di, GOOD FOR YOU for eating your pancakes without syrup or whipped cream.  That is a tough going-out situation and it looks like you made good choices for yourself.  I also started refrigerating my water bottles in lieu of your Prevention tip.  Do you like that magazine?  I love Cooking Light but I'm thinking about getting another magazine subscription.

Amyb, I know you're super busy with the final wedding touches, so just remember that we're all right here for you.

Goals for Tuesday:  1400 calories, 2 workouts, pushups.

Consequence for not meeting goals:  clean the oven and the microwave oven.

Biggest challenge:  I also need to stay focused on work today.

Hey all!  I had a busy weekend with its ups (exercised vigorously) and downs (ate poorly).

Amyb, I went through all that wedding madness 4 years ago.  I remember how all the little details seemed kind of ridiculous to me - so I hope you get a massage soon!

Di, it sounds like you're active all day.  That's great - and being outdoors is one of the best things about the summertime!

Welcome to mburns and MalissaMburns, hope the visit with your in-laws went well. :-)  For me, the consequence system works - I had two unsavory consequences last week and was good the rest of the week.  Until the weekend, which is the Achilles heel for me and pretty much everyone else on this board.

Tonia and amyb - thanks for giving me perspective on the whole "plateau" thing.  I just can't help feeling frustrated with such slow results, but it's important to remind ourselves that having efficient bodies is a good thing...

So...weekend report.

Exercise - excellent!  Besides hour-long hikes with the dog, I played tennis Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  And it was vigorous, exhausting tennis for at least an hour each day.  In fact, on Sunday, I was so tired afterwards that I fell asleep in my workout clothes while I waited for my husband to get out of the shower.  I have to say that this is an area I'm really happy with - I've only lost a few pounds, but I'm stronger and have more endurance and cardiovascular health, so huzzah!

Calories - not excellent.  In fact, poor.  The weekend was very social - went out with friends on Thursday and Friday, and drank too many glasses of wine over dinner both times.  Saturday was all right, but on Sunday, we ate lunch with another couple and I ate everything on my plate - crab cake sandwich, about 2 cups of steak fries, and a little bowl of cole slaw.  I even ate some of my husband's lunch and drank 2 beers.  Maybe I was so hungry because this was the first meal after tennis?

Consequence for such poor choices:  walk to the store today for this week's fruits and vegs.

Goal for Monday:  1300 calories, drink 72 ounces of water, 1 workout + pushups.

Biggest challenge:  snacking after dinner.

Have a great day, everyone!

Hey cmama!  Nice you could join us.  Even though it's only 1/3 pound, I'm impressed that you're losing consistently every week!  I've cut out refined sugar and products with high fructose corn syrup.   I don't know if that makes a difference as far as weight loss goes, but I'd rather spend calories on stuff that has nutrients in it.

Tonia, my husband's going to be out of town for a couple weeks in a couple months - that would be the perfect time to try your modified fat flush.

Report for Wednesday:  accomplished goals, so I don't have to make up a consequence!  Huzzah!

For Thursday:  1400 calories, 2 workouts, 40 pushups.

Challenge:  hydration.
