Weight Loss BMI?? obese?? Jun 21 2007

Dont trust the BMI too much. Trust your doctor. The BMI tells me I am obese too and that I should weigh in the 150 range. Right. A few years ago I lost a ton of weight and got down to 155, and was sent to a doctor and a psychaitrist for an ED because I was so unhealthily thin, yet, on the BMI I was middle of the road healthy.

I dont trust BMIs any further than I can throw my husband.
I currently weigh 217 (down from 225:D) and am trying to get to 190, which my doctor has told me seems reasonable. thats what Im going on, not abstract numbers made up by some person in a lab trying to come up with a formula to determine health.
Weight Loss low sugar= depression? Jun 21 2007

Fruits definatly, and try fresh fruit whenever possible.

And if it seems like you are having problems with your blood sugar, I would avoid fruit juice for a while. It has a higher concentration of sugar than pure fruit, and can make you blood sugar go all goofy.

And a serving of fruit isnt really a lot. To visualize a serving, it is roughly the size of a tennis ball cut in half, same with veggies.

Im on a diet to help control my blood sugar and the focus of it is "good sugars" and not too much of them, but not too little. So in a day Im supposed to eat 3-5 servings of protein, 2-4 of carbs (mostly grains), 4-6 of fruit, 2-4 of dairy, and 8-15 of veggies. So, yeah, pack in the veggies.

One of my favorite things for a snack is a salad with Lettuce and tomato (of course) but add avocado, strawberries, apples and pecans. Its almost everything in one little meal. Lots of veggies with some fruit and protein.
Weight Loss Need Some Serious Advice! Jun 20 2007

187 does seem light for your height. I am a 6 ft tall woman and I currently weigh 218 lbs, and my short term goal is 190, my long term 170, and thats where I want to stay.

If you feel guilty or gross when you look in the mirror after you eat, maybe it isnt just a problem with your weight, ya know. Maybe it is the way you see it.

When I was in high school...really for almost as long as I can remember I weighed in the 200s. The summer after high school I went on a diet (albeit a very unhealthy one) and got down to 155. When I looked in the mirror I saw a fat blob and I felt guilty and even nauseated everytime I was remotly full.

It took my friend, out of concern for me, taking a picture of me in my swim suit, then showing it to me before it really hit home how thin I had become. My face was gaunt, my hips stuck out, I just didnt look like me. Yet still, when I looked in the mirror, I saw this huge hideous mess.

You might not have as strong of feelings as I did, but maybe you are in slightly the same boat? Maybe it is your perspective of your self that needs a little tweak, not your body?

After I get back from the mall and the tempting Great American Cookie Company, I get crazy chocolate cravings, so to curb it, I give in, but only a little.

I keep the little fun size chocolates (right now it is milky ways) in a high cupboard, and when I just cant stand the craving anymore, I get ONE, I un wrap it and make it a point to take at least 4 bites. Each tiny bit, I savor and enjoy the flavor as long as possible before taking another little bite.

It really helps. I dont indulge in it that often either. One bag can last me 2 or 3 months. It is an absolute last resort, but taking tiny bites helps curb the craving, and prevents me from devouring the whole bag and then inhaling the pint of Ben and Jerrys in the freezer that has been taunting me for a couple months.
Weight Loss low sugar= depression? Jun 20 2007

ABSOLUTELY!

I have actually read reports that the no carb and severly low carb diets acan cause clinical depression, not just bad moods here and there.

I am hypoglycemic and study every chance I get how sugars and carbs affect our bodies, and it is incredible.

I would suggest eating at least 4 servings of carbs a day, but be sure they are whole grain. And try for 4-6 servings of fruit. If you are used to a lot of carbs and sugars you could be making yourself hypoglycemic (making you blood sugar low) and eating whole grain carbs and fruits should help level it.

If that diesnt help, try eating every 2-4 hours. Im not talkign huge meals, but try eating 3 small-medium meals with 3 snacks in between. You can still do that with low sugar or low carb, and it will help keep your blood sugar level (having it go too high and too low in one day can make you feel lethargic, moody and depressed too)

I am hypoglycemic and I know that for people with blood sugar problems, not eating for that long is one of the worst things you can do...so be wary.

Eating a low-fat, low calorie snack before bed (usually yogurt or fruit with cottage cheese) has made a huge difference for me. I am still losing weight, and I feel better in the morning. Eating before bed keeps sugar in your system through the night and your blood sugar wont drop in the wee hours of the morning and disrupt your sleep.

Im counting calories, and Im not watching sodium, but because of my hypoglycemia, I dont eat simple sugars or refined sugar, so the sodium I eat is fairly low because Ive cut out so much of the pre-made packaged food.

I just get frustrated, because I am counting carbs, counting how many veggies I eat in a day, making sure I dont eat too much fruit (the sugar can mess with me) because of they hypoglycemia AND now counting calories. Its crazy and frustrating. All this counting.

Right now I am eating 1600 calories a day and exerscising when I can, even if that is just walking the dog or parking at the far end of the lot when I go to the store.
Weight Loss how do you break habit eating? Jun 05 2007
19:20 (UTC)

It is a law to have breaks in most industries in America, but it isnt enforced. I know that in my state, if you work in a restaurant, health codes require that you have at least a 15 minute break every 4 hours or 30 minutes every 8 (which still seems too short), yet when I worked in restaurants I rarely got that break, and because of my hypoglycemia, I kept getting sick from not eating, and I finally had the threaten the managers.

Now I work as a secretary, and I really have to enforce that I get a break to eat. At first I would say "Do you guys mind if I go eat something?" and would be told, oh, Kim is first then Denise, then Ruth, then ....etc etc...now I just say "Hey, Im going to eat. Be back in 30 minutes." and they just say "oh, ok."

As far as eating out of bordeom, I used to do it too. All the time. Now, I drink water constantly through the day and it helps, and if I start to feel like I am hungry, but it seems like it is too soon since the last time Ive eaten, I will tell myself to wait 30 mins. If I am still hungry in 30mins, then I probably was really hungry and will go eat. If I forget ablout it...well..I was bored;)

I am hypoglycemic, and diabetes runs in my family as well, and I have to be very careful about sugars and carbs too.

I get awful cravings for sweets, and Ive found that tricking my body helps. Before I grab the ice cream out of the fridge, I usually grab some yogurt first.
Other times I will tell myself "Ok, you can get a candy bar in 30 minutes". Then I actually do something, like cleaning or just playing on the computer, and by the time the 30 minutes is up I either dont want it, or Ive forgotten all about it. Also, I tel myself "If you want something sweet, you have to go to the store and buy it." then I look in my wallet, and wonder if it is worth the $2 I have, and if it is worth the gas and time, and usually just stay home. I also tell myself that I have to walk to the store to get it. Now that it is getting hot out, that usually does the trick too.

Another trick if drink some water. Sometimes your body craves things when you are thirsty and drinking water helps.

I also look at the label before I eat something I know I shouldnt have. Most the things I eat have 4 grams of sugar or less (and 4 is pushing it) so when I look at a label and see 38 g Sugar, 300 calories in 2 tablespoons, I usually just put it back and the urge passes.

And my "last resort" is that I usually keep a bag of the fun sized candy bars in the cupboard way up high (out of sight out of mind) if I just cant stand it any more and really need sugar, I will eat one, but I only allot myself one a week, so I sit there pondering if it is worht using up my one for the week.
Weight Loss Darn... Phantom period... Jun 05 2007

Thats what mine does when it is late/skips. I get the pms-y symptoms, then no period. Ive noticed too, that when mine skips, I get the pms-y symptoms roughly every 2 weeks. It gets really obnoxious and frustrating. Trust me, Ive been there:(

Mine tends to skip when I change my routine (new diets or more vigorous workouts) it always comes back after a while, I guess it just skips until my body gets used to the new whatever I am doing.
Weight Loss Here is a stupid question Jun 04 2007

Ive always counted it as 2 sizes. I have gone from a size 20 to an 18, and to me thats one dress size...but it does make it iffy if you are thinking about jrs sizes since there are odds and evens then.

Im not 100% sure, but just in my own mid I count it as Ive gone down one, you two:)

To keep myself from getting in to a rut, I sometimes make my own trail mix, and make it different almost every time. I use combonations of dried and frest friut, wheat thins, triscuits, broken/torn up granola bars, nuts and really whatever I can find in the kitchen.

I usually just throw it all in a ziplock bag and shake it up, then throw it in my purse. It definatly breaks the rut of carrots and granola bars.

My sister did almost exactly that. She counted calories everyday except Saturdays, but even though she didnt count, she ate nothing fried and wouldnt gorge herself either, and she lost the weight she wanted to, though she didnt lose muh, she was just getting weight off after having a baby.

I think it is a good idea because counting can be so frustrating and tiresome. eating really should be enjoyable, not a chore. I dont see how giving your self a day off once a week could hurt as long as you dont go overboard.
Weight Loss summer heat Jun 03 2007
17:39 (UTC)

Thats actually something that is common knowledge among restaurants and they use it. Thats why in the summer time their "new" menu items tend to be lighter items, and in the winter they tend to roll out heavier things like pasta and steaks.

Enjoy the added salad options at your local restaurants for summer:)

And I know I have to be careful because I am hypoglycemic which makes me more suceptible to heat exhaution and I dont get hungry when it is too hot (I live in far South Texas, so it gets HOT). I have to eat every so often or else I get sick, so in the summer, I find myself forcing myself to eat to keep my blood sugar up.

Personally, I cant stand KFC, the smell and even adverts make me nauseated, but I do crave Whataburger like crazy (its a fairly local fast food burber place that is mostly just in Texas, but it started here in the city I live in so there is one on every street corner, and they own the baseball field, so everytime I go to a game I see it and smell it)

What I do, is go there, get a kids meal, eat a half a chicken strip and 2 fries, then give the rest to my dog and rat, even the half a strip and fries are a lot of calories (about 100 in just that little bit), but it is better than getting a chicken strip basket with double gravy and a strawberry milkshake like I used to...plus it makes the dog really happy, and I dont do it often;)
Weight Loss Question about sizes Jun 02 2007
22:05 (UTC)
1
My sizes vary not only store to store, but brand to brand and even within brands.

At Old Navy or the Gap (both owned by the same company) I can wear anything from a 12 to a 20, no joke.

Ive noticed that some depends on where the garmet fits, I have a smallish waist (small compared to the rest of me) but wide hips, so if I find a skirt that fits at the waist I tend to wear a 14, if I find something that fits low on the waist or at the hips I wear an 18 or 20.
Shirts are impossible for me to guess the size because sometimes (I suppose if it is a baggy style) I wear a medium, other times I have to find a double or tripple xl to find something that fits over my big bust and broad shoulders. It is very frustrating.

Generally, when I see something I like, I start at a 16 (middle of the road for me) and hold it up to me. If I can pull it across my front, and it touches both seams of the clothes Im wearing, I generally try it on and one size up just in case. Its a good indicator so that you dont have to go in to a dressing room 5 different times or once, but with 5 of the same garmet in different sizes.

And they are right, jr.s (odd numbered clothes) do tend to run funny My best friend is 5'1 and wears a 6 or 8 normally but in jrs has to scrounge for an 11 or 13 or even 15 in jrs. (I personally dont know since I am 6' tall and 220lbs and havent fit in to jr's sizes since I was 8 years old)
Weight Loss will eating more fat bring back my period!? Jun 02 2007

Another thing, is when my period is late/skips, I get all the PMS-like signs every so often, then they stop after a couple days. I would get bloated, then tender breasts (sorry if that is tmi), then light cramping, then it would all just stop. Very frustrating.

It seemed like everytime I just decided to put it out of my mind and figured "it will start when it starts" and came to grips with the idea that I wasnt actualy pregnant (that was always in the back of my mind) then it usually started within a couple days.

I havent had a chance to read all the replys, but I will say this, my body is very sensitive to changes, and I have tried many different diets, and when I switch to one that is drasticaly different in any way than the last, or if I change my excerscie method or amount, it makes my period late or skip...when I first started yoga it skipped 4 months. Recently, when I cut out simple carbs I skipped a month and a half.

Im really not sure why, and believe me it scared me the first few times (especially when it skipped 4 months) , but my body does that, and Im sure Im not the only one. It seems like once my body got adjusted to the new routine, my periods came back and stayed steady and on time til I did something else to confuse my body;)
Weight Loss Comments on this pseudo-lowcarb diet goal/plan? Jun 02 2007
02:50 (UTC)
Ive read and heard that No Carb is bad unless you have major blood sugar issues. No Carb diets are being linked to kidney and gall stones and even depression and anxiety.

Low carbs, as long as you are smart about it, can be very beneficial.

Im hypoglycemic and stick to a South Beach-esque diet that is

4-6 servings of complex carbs
3-6 servings of fruit
3-6 servings of protein (I dont eat red meat, it is all lean poultry, fish or nuts)
2-4 servings of dairy
6-9 servings of veggies (more if I feel like it:P)
And absolutely no refined sugars or simple carbs and I greatly limit starchy vegtables.

I also eat 6 small meals a day to keep my blood sugar up.
The problem is that now that I am sticking to this diet, I have ahard time getting enough calories.
Its the weidest thing. See, I started the diet back in feb, and I lost 5 lbs in the first month of it. Then for 2 months I lost nothing, so I started counting calories. I figure the reason I stopped losing is because I went from who knows how many calories to 900-1200 a day all of a sudden (when my expenditure, accordig to this site, is 2200).

Now I am having a hard time getting to 1600 and find myself having to completely rethink my diet.

If you want to tone your arms, Yoga and such is fairly good method. You dont need to join a gym or buy any major equipment either. Just buy a DVD, or record/dvr an episode of a yoga show on tv.

Yoga uses mostly stretches, and is really good for toning, but not gaining a lot of muscle.

I have a more defined waist and arms now thanks to Yoga and actually gained muscle in my thighs. And in the school year I only did it an hour 2 days a week, and now I just do it 10-30 mins a day depending on how much time I have.

A cut off time Really doesnt work for some people.

People with blood sugar problems (and even some without) are actually better off eating an hour or less before bed. It will keep your blood sugar from dropping to low in the morning, and keep you from being ravenously hungry in the morning and can even help you sleep better.

Work is fairly easy for me because of my job, but sometimes there are problems. For the most part, if I feel my blood sugar start to dip I just run to the fridge and eat a small thing of yogurt and it is enough to hold me over til lunch.

I do have to plan around my classes more so than work though. I tell all of my instructors that I am hypoglycemic, so if I get pale and run out of the room, thats why. I usually keep glucose tablets AND a protein bar (the south beach diet ones are really good and have just enough sugar without knocking it too high) with me for emergencies, and I make it a point to eat something before all of my classes even if I am not all that hungry.

It was a struggle at first to try and get a routine, but now that I have one, I do pretty well.

But if I am not eating enough calories...shouldnt I be losing weight? Granted Im not gaining any, but Im certainly not losing it.

I cut out simple sugars in March and lost 5 lbs in that month and nothing since. I started trying to count calories over the weekend, and havent noticed a change yet, but I dont really expect to for another few weeks.

I dont want to hurt myself by eating too little, but I dont want to eat something when Im not hungry just because I need to up my calories.

I do exerscise, but it is usually light. Walking the dog half or a quarter of the way around the golf course (though it is getting so hot now that summer is coming, I may have to find something else to do) and yoga most days in the morning for 10-30 mins.

And I know how ya feel, Dan.

If I dont eat before bed, I get horrid nightmares starting around 3 am and keep waking up, and when I do get up, I have to eat first thing, whereas, if I eat before bed, I can put off breakfast 30 mins or an hour while I take a shower and get dressed for the day.

I just started, but an average day for me:

Breakfast: Granola cereal with fruit and/or yogurt and milk

Snack: Cottage cheese with fruit (usually oranges or peaches and pears)

Lunch: Turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with lettuce tomato, and avocado, with a small salad with spinach greens, romaine, strawberries, apples and walnuts,

Snack: yogurt and a protein bar (just to get me through the rest of work)

And dinner varies greatly depending on my husbands plans, but usually consists of chicken or fish, wheat pasta or bread, grilled or steamed veggies and a salad.

And then I usually eat either yogurt or a little bit of cottage cheese an hour or so before bed.

About losing that chest when you lose weight...as far as I can tell, some people do, some people dont.

I can tell when my mom starts a new diet (it sounds creepy but its true) because she goes from slightly busty to nothing, then when she stops the diet she goes back to busty. She says the first place she loses it is her chest.

Me on the other hand, I can lose 30 lbs and drop only an inch or two in the bra size and never lose a cup size. Since I was 15 (Im 24 now) I have never worn anything but a D or DD and my weight has fluctuated in that time between 155 and 235. Quite a difference to only lose/gain one cup size and a couple inches:P
Weight Loss How did you become overweight? May 30 2007

I blame some on my hypoglycemia, some on the days when I was dirt broke and couldnt afford anything other than mac and cheese, hamburger helper with no hamburger and fries I snuck at work, and some on not caring, or just being sick of caring.

Before very recently (just a couple months ago) I was not managing my hypoglycemia well. I was "dieting" based on 10 year old information, which is archaic when you are talking about a diabetes related disease. When my blood sugar dropped I inhaled chocolate bars and cokes to get it back up, and ate carbs to try and keep it up, not realizing the difference between simple and complex carbs and their affects.
Ever since I was a kid (it is thought that Ive been hypoglycemic since early childhood) I would crave carbs and sugar and being a kid, when I craved them, I ate candy and ice cream and frosted flakes and just plain bread and butter. These eating habits followed me in to adulthood, and the problem that when I did exerscise, I became extremely dizzy, so I just stopped.

I have been "over weight" most of my life, a lot of which I attribute to just plain being big. I take after my dad's side of the family, and he is 6'4 and 270lbs and he is the smallest of his 4 brothers, and I dont think their sister is far behind.

I, for a long time, just didnt care about my weight. I didnt have time to worry about it, and I was very tired of worrying about it. Its exhausting looking in mirrors and hating what you see but not knowing what to do about it. So, I just stoped looking.

Now I think I am attacking this with a healthier approach, and in actuality I want to lose weight because my husband and I know we want to start trying to have a baby sometime in the next year (waiting on his promtion that includes benefits) and since I have time to prepare, I want my body to be in top notch shape before hand, since, in all liklihood I will probably have gestational diabetes, and want to cut down on the complications and risks as much as possible NOW.
