From the veg meal, eat the vegetables, dal (lentils), yogurt. Go easy on the rice as the servings are huge. Half or one small chapati should be fine. If you want protein eggs and chicken are easily available . Go easy on the sweets and avoid anything deep fried like poories and samosas made with white flour. Places like Kerala and Goa are places for fresh straight off the boat seafood. The variety is mind boggling and the preparation is simple and healthy served with unpolished rice. Yes, they do use coconut in their curries, but coconut is a good fat. You don't have to worry too much about it. So is ghee. You can get the idlies or dosa with chutney on the side. Not every place serves them smothered in the chutney. Also you can stock up on organic peanut butter, nuts, peanut brittle, canned tuna, fresh fruits etc from a supermarket. I eat low carb so this list. You can get tons of healthy low fat but not low carb snacks too. The supermarkets shouldn't be difficult to find in big cities. You can even find steel cut oatmeal, but you'll need a stove to cook it, not sure if you have access to a kitchen. Another thing to do is try any of the open, outdoor markets, available all over India and sample the variety of fruits and vegetables. Of course, wash them well first! For everyday lunch and dinner I would choose 2 small chapatis (the ones without oil are called phulkas both made with whole wheat) with dal (low fat and high fiber) and a vegetable dish - dry preparation would be healthier and I would avoid the gravies and curries. Plus raita or yogurt to end the meal. If I'm not counting carbs I would take a serving of rice. Again for breakfast, if carbs are not an issue, I would choose idlis, dosa, upma, pohe etc with fruit. You can even get oatmeal and various cereals too. If you are counting carbs then an omelette with lots of veggis, called masala omelette or egg bhurji ( scrambled eggs with veggies) shouldn't be very difficult to find. I hope this helps. Have a good trip! |

| I made chocolate chip cookies (about 12 medium sized, around 2 1/2 " dia) and found cho.chip cookies from the food database which said one medium around 2" dia is around 78 calories made from a recipe using butter. I used this to add to my food log. All was well and I was happy. This was a week ago. Just now, out of curiosity I added all the ingredients in the recipe section and calculated the calories and it says each cookie is 216 calories! I find out now when I've finished all the cookies! In order to save time, I picked the same sized cookie from the database and did not add it in the recipe section. I found out the grams/weight make all the difference. Will not be making this mistake again! |

| I usaually opt for grilled items on the menu like a piece of fish or chicken and mentally calulate the size, compared to the palm of my hand (3 oz). I try and fill up on salad with dressing on the side, non creamy ones, half a baked potato or stir fried broccoli. I usually eat half of the stuff on my plate and get the leftovers home. I come home and calculate the calories and find that I'm usually within my daily alloted calories. | |||

Thank you all for responding. To answer some of your questions, yes,
the fat was measured with an handheld monitor. In fact, the person who
took the test called me a skinny minnie before she took it and I could
see that she was taken aback by the number. I have a small frame and I know 116 can look like extra weight and I'm now working towards losing about 10 pounds, but I don't look overweight. Irwiggins, according to the link you posted I'm overweight (I'm 28 yrs) jenmcc, thank you for the detailed post. My measurement at the waist at bellybutton without sucking in is 28 and hips are at 34 inches. My body shape is exactly like how you describe yours. I tend to carry my weight around my middle and back. Lower body esp. legs are well toned and I can see muscles (I love to jog) I'm now going to work on losing those 10 pounds and do more weights concentrating on the upper body and I will get the body fat measured again from a different place. |

I agree with girlywhirly - I'm surprised too about how much I can eat for 1000 calories! I've recently started counting calories and I find I'm completely satisfied with eating within it and somedays have to eat more even if not hungry to maintain the 1200 a day mark. I'm afraid of my metabolism slowing down if I fall below that. In a typical day I eat oatmeal, lentils, egg whites, tuna, nuts, wheat bread and lots of fruits and vegetables and I'm never really hungry. |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
