Weight Loss confused by RMR... can someone explain? Sep 28 2008

Okay, thank you.  I know that they are estimates, but aside from wearing a heart-rate monitor all day, it's the only way to measure.

And Betty, thank you for the response.  I taped it to my refrigerator.  (No body/food significance there, it's just where I put things:-)

And as for job related stress, I am sure that has something to do with it.  Money is tight, and adjusting my body to the new schedule, summer heat (yuck), and new apartment has been difficult.   That being said, this is not the first time I have had a weight-related emotional breakdown.  It is just the first time I have been dead wrong.

Thanks for all the responses.  And no, I wasn't joking about the therapy.  This experience opened up my eyes, and I have really been doing a lot of thinking and soul searching.

I think that it is really hard to be a woman right now - especially a young woman.  The amount of pressure put on us by the media, even if we say it doesn't impact us, is really incredible.  Our image of what a beautiful woman should be are the images we see in magazines whether we like it or not.

As I said, this kind of opened my eyes.  To be so messed up in the head that I convince myself I am 20 lbs heavier when I was ACTUALLY 5 lbs lighter is pretty significant.  I lie to myself (and people on the CC forums) and say that I work out and watch what I eat "to be healthy."  The truth is that I work out and eat healthy to be skinny.  This needs to change, or I will never feel good enough about myself.

Consciously I know that I need to get to a place where it IS about health, but convincing my subconscious of that is another story.  I can always find a flaw with my body, no matter what I am wearing or how I am looking at myself.

I am not kidding about the therapy, and I think that once I can afford it (ins doesn't pay), I will go that route.

Thanks again for all the input.

Thanks for the replies.  I thought I was mature and confident, but the way that I reacted to this was ridiculous.  I obviously need to work on parts of myself OTHER than the size of my ass.

Thansk for writing though.  It makes me sad that so many women feel this way about themselves.

Working on myself - maybe instead of the gym membership, I'll get a therap membership.  :-/

I do the same thing :(

I was SUPER happy with my weight for a while.  Somehow I managed to not binge for a long period of time and I managed to lose the weight that I needed over a period of a few months.

Now, I am in this horrible unhealthy cycle again.  I try and NOT eat during the day - usually because I ate too much the night before.  Then, I get to about 7 PM and I explode.  I eat everything I can find.

Sometimes I will be eating and saying to myself "BP, why are you eating this - you're not even hungry?"  But I eat anyway.  I have never purged or anything, but I know that what I do is out of control.

I try to set limits for myself (no eating after 8 PM), but it doesn't work.  I try to eat popsicles instead of cookies, but it doesn't work.

I'm miserable too, and the body that I LOVED is gone.  I lost about 15 pounds, and have gained back 10.

I am debating going to some of those "Oevreaters anonymous" meetings, but I'm too embarrassed.

Ugh

Just look it up before you go...  If you keep a mental record of what the healthiest menu items are at Wendy's, McD's, and Burger King, you should be okay.

Be careful of all that salt though.  Fast food (and restaurant food) is loaded with sodium, and will mislead you into feeling hungry when you're not.

I looked up a few things for you.  Here are some healthy options at various restaurants:

McDonald's:

Chicken Fajita - 220 calories (but loaded with salt)

Snack wraps: even the crispy chicken versions of these only have about 330 calories.  Again, they are loaded with sodium.

Fruit n yogurt parfaits are good too, and have less sodium than the sandwiches. (160 kcal)

Wendy's:

Ultimate chicken grill: only 320!

Frosty - a jr. frosty only has 160 kcal.

Chili - a small chili only has 220

Of course, if you go to a Subway you can eat healthy the whole time.

Good luck!

Fitness Confused on Sit-ups. Please help. Apr 30 2008

I used to use an ab roller like that.  it was great - you could add weight to it to up your crunches.

I like using it because it takes pressure off of your neck and arms.  Sometimes if I do too many crunches my neck hurts - but not when I was using that.

If you can only do 10 crunches, either you're in really bad shape or you're using it wrong.  The fact that it has been 6 weeks and you still can do no more than ten tells me that you're using it wrong.

It sounds like you may be trying to do sit-ups as opposed to crunches.  The ab rollers aren't designed for sit-ups, only crunches.  You go up until you feel your abs engage, and then go back down.

Where are you holding your hands?  You can either hold onto these at the top (over your head), or at the sides.  If you want to do your obliques, you can rotate your body slightly and hold on with only one hand.

You need to figure out how to use this thing.  It really shouldn't be that hard.  These were the easiest cruchnes I have ever done...

And Melkor - thanks for writing back.

I have no desire to look like Nicole ritchie (yuck!)...

I am trying to understand the sarcoplasm stuff you are talking about, but I am not with you.  I don't want to look "Muscle deficient", but I don't want big muscles.  I woudl like to be toned.  Myofibrillar seems like the right call (although I have to look it up to be sure).  I am not giving up the weight training, but have lessened it (as per above).

You are really knowledgeable, by the way.  I consider myself to be smart when it comes to the gym, but I have never even heard some of the words you are saying!

Thanks!

I like this thread - it is really helping me understand my body.  Thanks to Melkor and iamme1270 for writing back.  You guys rock!

In response to your question:

Blondie- are you eating in a deficit now or have you changed your routine? Bc if so, we can give you input on how to better maintain the leg mass while you are looking to lose fat! Please just clarify the input you need so we can respond!

Yes, I am eating in a deficit now.  My RMR is about 2200 (BMR + activity level) and I am burning around 1000 calories a day.  I am trying to eat about 2200 calories on days that I work out and 1500 on days that I don't.  After reading this thread, it became obvious that by NOT eating in a deficit, I was contributing to a pretty rapid muscle growth.  I was eating when I was hungry, and 2000 was probably an underestimation.  Now I try to keep a 1000 deficit.

My routine has changed as well.  I am doing slightly more cardio.  I do step classes, aerobics classes (regular hi/lo impact), cycling (even though I hate cycling), calistehnics, ellipticals, treadmills, etc.  I try for an  hour each day, but after the gain I have added about 15 minutes before and after on a non-impact machine (precor).

What I have really changed is my weight training.  I had been doing MANY sets of high weights.  (5 sets/12 reps).  Our gym got these new yellow weight machines that give you instructions on how to add "advanced" lifts into your routine by adding sets 4-5.  I added weight gradually in each set, so that by the end I was lifting quite a bit.

Now, I have moved down to 3 sets in each weight group.   I lift at the same weight (no gradual addition of weight) 3 sets/12 reps.  It is not a LOW weight, but it isn't my max.  maybe between 60-75% of my maximum.  I am not as rigid about my lifting as before - I do it about 3 times a week, maybe four.  I am still doing glutes, abductors, adductors, hams, quads, calves.  I do abductors and adductors as a cardio exercise and no longer as a "lift".  I have also incorporated a lot more lunges, squats, squat jumps, etc...  into my workout.  I did them before, but sparingly.  Now it is a pretty regular addition to my workout.

I have been doing this now for almost two weeks (since the responses to my thread).  I have dropped weight (most likely bc of the deficit), which was not my original goal, although I will accept it!  My butt has not noticably slimmed down, but my stomach and arms have.

That's all I've got - I would love to hear your responses!

Thanks!

Good for you.  It sounds like you're really taking this seriously.  It seems silly, but for me, accepting accountability was the biggest this of all.  Realizing that I am the one who made me fat, and no one else but me caused it.

I haven't ever been laughed at in public like that - how awful that must have been for you.  Good for you for making yourself healthier.

If your friend wears a size 22, there is no WRONG reason for her to lose weight.  She just needs to lose it.

I hear what you're saying, but I think that regardless of what the reason is, if someone is overweight then it's okay for them to lose it.

Personally, I want to lose weight because I look better when I'm thinner.  Sounds superficial to you probably, but if you take a closer look, it's the same reason that you want to lose weight.

Looking bad (overweight), makes me feel bad about my health, my body, and my being.  I want to feel better about myself from ALL angles.
Weight Loss Do you guys log your "bites" Apr 30 2008

Yes! I do log it all, and I overestimate.

What you are doing by not logging your "bites" is underestimating your calorie intake every day.

I feel that it is safer to overestimate your calories than underestimate.  If you underestimated your calories by even just 100 each day (which could be a bite or two), you could gain a pound in a month!

Log everything - you'll be less inclined to snack throughout the day if you know you have to see it in writing.

Sorry everyone!  I went out of town, and meanwhile this thread got long!

Anyway, I wasn't really in a "weight loss" phase.  I am/was more or less satisfied with my weight, but wanted to continue burning calories and wanted to tone up a bit.  I was eating around 2000 calories a day (I'm 6 feet tall and very active).  Doing about 1 hour of cardio a day (step classes, elliptical, stationary bikes, treadmill, etc...) and lifting every other day.  I take 1-2 days off per week.  I did butt, hamstrings, quads, abducters, and adductors.  I was doing a really intense lifting session.  I would do 5 sets of twelve reps for each muscle group, incresing the weight incrementally.  I normally only do three sets, but as I was happy with my weight and looking to tone, i upped my sets.  I was doing a lot of squats, lunges, and floor exercises with my legs.  I did this routine every other day.  It was about 30-45 days of this routine when I noticed my lower body begin to thicken.

I was not on a calorie deficit since I was not looking to lose weight, just tone up.  Sure, I would have been happy losing a few pounds, but that was not really my goal.

Again, sorry for the delay - I had to take a little business trip for a couple days.

ETA: People have mentioned that fast muscle gain is unless you're a natural athlete.  I am sort of gentically predisposed to being a "natural athlete" I guess...  My dad was an olympic runner who still holds national records, and my mother, uncle, and aunt all swam at a national level (division one) in college.  Our family does gain muscle mass pretty quickly and easily.

Wow, this is interesting.  Thanks for all of the responses.  I went to the one site, and it basically said that lifting weights will NOT make me lose weight!  It's all in the cardio.

I think I am going to change my workout: UP my cardio, and reduce my weight training!

Thanks for all the advice (and the great MSN articles).  I love this site!

This is a really silly argument.  First - and most importantly - Rowling approved each and every change.  That should end the discussion right now.  However,

kindoflikeSarah - so you prefer to read th English version.  Fine!  Read it, but you clearly don't know very much about children if you think that words that they don't understand aren't an issue.

What Rowling wanted to be done by "translating" the books into American English was to have her ideas brought forth clearly and succinctly, as she pictures them in her head.  When you write a book, you are painting a picture in someone else's head.  If that person is wrongly picturing Harry in a dress, or a football shaped quaffle - your story is conveyed less successfully, and in the end is more confusing to a child.

I am an elementary school teacher.  I work with kids all the time, and let me tell you - they absolutely DO pick up on stuff like that.  Confusion is frustrating for a 9 year old.  Often rather than figure it out, they will give up.  If a child gives up reading your children's book - you have failed as an author.

This is, first and foremost, a children's book.  It was written for children and about children.  Rowling was published by a children's book publisher in both the UK AND the US (Bloomsbury and Scholastic).  Yes - adults read the books too, but they are meant for children.  If I were an author, I would want my story to be accessible to all children - not just the ones in my country.  It is not only a smart move fiscally, but a kind move towards children.

By all means, the British version should be published in the US.  However, much of the local dialect would go over the heads of your average elementary schooler.  Not all - some smart ones will pick it up.  But yes, most of them will be coonfused by the words.

It is also silly to think of it as being "dumbed down."  The American editors aren't replacing the 3 syllable words with one syllable words, shortening the chapter length, or making it into a picture book.  They are simply editing certain dialect choices that would be confusing to your average 9 year old American.  I think its great - American kids get to enjoy the books the same way that the British kids do!  Why should the American children have to struggle to understand basic British words, when the British kids can sail through it?  That isn't what the author wants.

Go read your British version, but please don't accuse American children who work hard on their grammar of having things "dumbed down" for them.  It isn't fair, and it isn't accurate.

My original take on this was that the poster should feel that he can bring this up with his wife.  I got off track because people started attacking him, and it bothered me.  Athena - I apologize for saying it was you who was being hateful - I was referring to RobinSue's posts and got confused.  You have actually been very respectful in your dissenting opinion.

I think he should  be allowed to voice his concerns.  Not say "Hey wifey, you are fat!" But say "I love you, but your weight is beginning to affect our relationship."  Yes, it will hurt, yes it will be upsetting.  But I think that there are very few people in the world who we can trust to actually be honest with us when it counts, and one's spouse happens to fall in that category.

Do I think that the weight is more important than the depression?  Hard to say...  I more believe that one was directly caused by the other, but who can know?  A "what came first - the chicken, or the egg" scenario.  Treat one, you will treat the other.

I feel that it is a husband's duty AND a wife's duty to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle with and FOR each other.  They both need to keep up their end of the bargain.  He has to lose weight too - why not do it together?  That will keep her from feeling singled out or ashamed.

Not only do I think he should tell her, but I believe that it is his responsibilty to raise his concerns.  If something isn't working in any relationship, it is our job to bring it up.  If he doesn't say something, his frustration will turn into resentment, his lack of sex drive will turn into disgust, and his concern will turn into annoyance.  Their marriage will end, and she will never have had the opportunity to fix it or know why.

Again - if he doesn't tell her, who will?

Athena - I get irritated with online bullies.  This man has been nothing but respectful to you, Robinsue, and workoutaddict.  And he continues to be insulted.

This is a man posting a genuine emotional problem - we do not need to tear him down.  The hypocrisy in workoutaddict's post needed to be addressed.  He posted some helpful comments earlier, but has resorted to name-calling.  It doesn't belong in a respectful online community.  There is no need to post if you are going to call the OP names.

I see threads every day that bother me, or I think "What is the OP on?" or sometimes I even think, "Jesus, that OP sounds like a huge jerk."  But when I come across those posts, I just move on.  No need to insult someone who hasn't done any harm.

Workout addict - I take offense to the comment "some people will read it that way because of their poor comprehension"

I find it ironic that you remark on others' poor comprehension when your own post is filled with so many grammatical and puntuation errors that I could barely understand what you were saying.

Robinsue (not Athena - my mistake) has made some particlarly nasty comments - here are some of the winners "I'm not sure whether I'm more nauseated or annoyed at the moment," and "But right now I kinda think you suck & not in the nice way."  Or workoutaddict's "you don't have to talk about her like she turned into a whale," or "who the heck are you kidding to say you're not shallow?"  This is hateful.

Please can we be more mature?  And listen to whar your mother said - if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

We are all entitled to our opinions, but please let's try to be a little more mature than "you suck" or name-calling.

Athena - you seem to be very stuck on the point that he woudl be TELLING his wife that she has gained weight, and how ridiculous because she clearly knows already.  That isn't the point.  Yes, of COURSE she already knows.  He is talking about saying to her "Look, your weight is starting to impact our relationship, and for my sake it is time that you/we changed our lifestyles back to the way they used to be."

He isn't going to say, "Hey wife - you got fat."

You know that.  And yes, I do appreciate bluntness, but not hatefulness.  Your posts to a man in an emotional situation were not blunt, but had an edge of hatefulness to them.

I love these threads, and think that we need to keep them as supportive as we can.  I would be sad to see this forum turn into some of the nasty teenage/20 something threads I have come across - and that is coming from a twenty-something!

Athena - I don't understand why you seem to hateful towards this man?  I think it is perfectly understandable that he is concerned with his attraction level to his wife at this time.  You said is it selfish to think that way, but so what?  He has to be considered too, and not feeling attracted to your spouse is pretty important.

He said he has about 20 to lose...  there is a big difference between an extra 20 lbs, and the approximate 60-100 lbs that it would take to double your clothing size.

My uncle recently left my aunt, one of the reasons being that she put on about 100 lbs since they married.  Mostly however, the weight was a peripheral problem - they used to play sports together, go on hikes together, travel together, etc...  He fell in love with her because she shared his sense of adventure and travel, because they loved the outdoors, and basically loved doing exciting things together.  When she put on the weight, not only did her body change and leave him feeling unattracted to her, but the woman that he fell in love with who LOVED doing exciting things with him vanished!  She quit their hockey team, stopped taking hikes, stopped working out - basically, she stopped being the person he fell in love with.

Was she depressed - yes!  Was she unhappy - yes!  But at the end of the day, she changed so much that she wasn't making him happy anymore.  Yes - HIM.  He tried to talk to her, help her, work out WITH her, but in the end, she didn't want to change.

Do I think that the poster should leave his wife?  No - and it doesn't sound like he wants to.  But when they married, he said his vows to what sounds like a totally different person than she has become.  The fact of the matter is that he married a woman who is now different than she was before.  It is her RESPONSIBILITY to keep up her end of the bargain.  She doesn't have to be stick thin, but she does have to be able to continue the lifestyle that she began with him...

I asked my boyfriend if he would leave me if I gained 100 lbs - he said yes.  I asked why, and he told me that I wouldn't be the same active, exciting, fun person anymore.  And he wouldn't want to sleep with me anymore.  Does that make him superficial?  No - but he works hard to maintain his body for me, and I should be able to do at least the same for him.  You owe it to your spouse, family, and friends to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle - one that promises that you will do your damnedest to stick around on this earth as long as you possibly can.

Techmonkey's wife doesn't sound like she is doing that.

Techmonkey's wife owes it to him and her children to change her lifestyle back to how it used to be.  She owes it to him to re-become who she was when they married.  And he owes it to her to tell her, help her, and work with her until she is that person again.

Weight watchers isn't good.  Their calorie intake is far too low to actually commit to, or maintain.

They have a good reputation, mostly because of the meetings, and group support, but without those weekly "weigh-ins", they are just another ultra low calorie diet.

It really isn't healthy, and having tried it, I would not recommend it to anyone.  Calories are too low.
