Weight Loss Upset by experts idea of what my weight SHOULD be... Aug 15 2008

For me, 98-100 lbs is ideal (I am 5'1 and small framed).  However my mom who is 5'0 was always at least 20 lbs heavier than me at my age but, IMO, had a much better figure than me!  People carry weight differently and have individual ideal weights.  Height is not the sole determinate, you have to take into account bone size and density, body composition, weight distribution, etc.

You know what your ideal weight is...don't worry about what these "experts" say.

Yeah I have seen a big difference since I started working with weights.  I do some of the machines at the gym but I am starting to focus more on free weights, which you can certainly do at home.

thanks queenmedia.  Last year I was 26.5% although I didn't weigh all that much more.  I was "working out" at that point, but only doing cardio.  The difference for me has been adding weight training.

At this point my goal is mainly to increase my definition which is what the trainer suggested.  I am pretty happy where I am but I always want to improve.

No I agree that a certain amount of fat is necessary for health, especially for women.  What my trainer was suggesting was that I just aim to build muscle, and if I gain more muscle than fat, my BF% will decrease.  I don't really see what's wrong with that.

I disagree with post #7.  My reading is not unhealthy.  I am not undereating and I do not have ammenorhea or any other symptoms of malnourishment.  My trainer was not at all concerned, he said I was lean but could lower my % by putting on muscle (note he said NOT to focus on losing fat).

I don't see the harm in lowering my BF% if I do it by GAINING muscle.  How is this unhealthy?

Also the trainer who tested me mentioned how I could get down to about 11-12% by adding muscle (he said I should not focus on losing fat).  Is that a realistic goal?  If I JUST add muscle is it possible for me to get down to 12% and still be healthy?

When this happens I usually just toss out the yolks, since usually the whites are cooked through.  I don't think you can re-cook them once they are cooled.

Well I generally avoid HFCS but I do consume it in some things.  I actually eat Tiger's Milk bars from time to time and it hasn't hindered my progress.  I would keep the bars as an occasional snack and just not eat them all the time.

How does he have time to eat all of that?  According to the schedule they showed on tv he only has 15 minutes for breakfast before he goes to the pool.

well I went and he used two methods this time: calipers and an omron handheld scanner.  The calipers result was 15.4% and the handheld said 17.7%.  So even with a standard margin of error of 3%, I made out really well!   The caliper test in May was 24%, so I have probably lost somewhere between 6.3 and 8.6% fat!!  I was doubtful of the caliper results so I asked for the actual skinfold measurements, then plugged them in here and got a result of 16%.  I'm so happy my work has actually paid off!

thanks for your reply!  actually the first time I had it tested I was not really upset although I was surprised.  But I also knew I was quite out of shape.  I have made a lot of progress at least in how I look in the mirror and have lost 6-7 lbs.  So maybe I will get a better result this time.  I still have a few hours to cancel if I want...I just don't know.

Yeah Phelps looks really good!  Actually a lot of the guys do, and some of the women also.  But a lot of the girls do seem to have a bit 'extra' for athletes of their level.  I remember when I was on the middle school swim team there was pressure from the coachs to stay lean and they wouldn't let us eat anything high in sugar or fat.

Young Calorie Counters ppl in college help!!: worried about being able to exercise in college :- \ Aug 11 2008

I am lucky, there is a beautiful Gold's gym across from my college (no on-campus gym though) so I go everyday between classes.  You have to MAKE time and have the initiative, otherwise it's too easy to blow off your workouts.

ETA: I'm a senior with a full course load, I have always worked throughout college, and maintained a 4.0/4.0 gpa average.  There have been times when I majorly slacked off from my fitness routine, but this year I have made a commitment, and it all still somehow gets done!  I think I actually have more energy because I consistently workout.

I like exercise and feel better after I do it.. Why would I want to take a day off?  I thought the reason for a break was for your muscles to grow and recuperate, and cardio isn't hard on the muscles...so shouldn't that count?

Right click on the box where you type your message.  Select "Spell check this field."  Problem solved.

Edit:  I see some of the spelling critics in this thread seem to have their own issues with capitalization...

thank you missmontana!  yes my diet is already very clean, I guess more protein might help though?  also I have been doing a lot of cardio and it initially helped me develop muscle, but I feel that has leveled off.  So I'm thinking it's time to focus more on resistance training.

At 125: " Based upon your current Body Mass Index (BMI) of 19.6, you are currently classed as underweight."

wait, since when is a BMI of 19.6 considered underweight?
