Weight Loss 18-21 yr olds. . . do they exist here? May 17 2008
17:48 (UTC)

Am I allowed in here? Lol. I turned 22 a few months ago.

1. A lot of different factors. I was depressed at how my body and health regressed and yo-yoed after being fit, toned and healthy during high school (I was a three-season athlete). I felt unhappy with the way I looked and kicked myself for letting my weight burgeon to 155 lb. I knew that because I was still really young, I could make significant changes early and prevent myself from getting heavier. From what I can see, it only gets harder as you get older (metabolism, busy schedule) so I put my foot down and decided to prevent my total decline into becoming a prisoner in my own body.

2. Yes! From a high point of 155, I am now about 119 lb. 4 lb left to my goal. I made a lot of educated decisions to change to a whole-foods / clean eating LIFESTYLE (not short-term diet) and eased into it. I got back into working on my fitness (slowly). I worked hard, but not to the point where food and diet consumed my life as it had when I was anorexic at 16- about 98 lb and 5'4" (which sent me to rehab). Calorie-count's food tools helped me in the beginning, when I was stricter and felt I needed to know the calorie content of EVERYTHING I ate. But now I just eat foods that I know are good for me, in satisfying portions and balanced with a large amount of fresh fruit and veggies.

3. I registered back in early 2007, but didn't begin using CC's resources until a few months ago. Glad I did though. It's the only thing that has kept me on a healthy track thus far.

Well first off, tanjyoubi omedetou to your son :)

And next, you seem like the kind of person who doesn't need a lecture. I've read some of your other posts before and I feel like you usually make educated choices. It was your son's birthday, and while binging is different from cheating a bit, I hope you at least enjoyed eating that pizza and cake with your family. And since all is said and done, you'll probably be back on track tomorrow (it's not like you jumped the wagon or anything). Instead of regretting it, focus on how happy your son probably was sharing a big birthday meal with his dad :)

Weight Loss if you're asian Asian.....is what I eat too much?? (Please, help me answering this..anyone can answer) May 17 2008

I want to help if I can and answer your question, but I have to echo what mpatitucci said. It does seem like quite a small amount of food regardless of ethnicity... and you haven't included any stats. What is your height, weight and frame size?

I understand that we Asians are held to a different standard than any other ethnic group. What is "normal" or even "skinny" for Americans is usually considered "chubby" or even "fat" in the eyes of other Asians. I know what that extra social pressure is like. But what is right and healthy for YOU is independent of that and I hope you keep that in mind if you're attempting to lose weight. ^^

But please, share if you're comfortable. Details are good :) We'll all try to help you as much we can.

In all fairness, I have to say that the desserts are FANTASTIC! I haven't tried any of her cupcake/muffin recipes (I have a feeling they won't turn out too tasty) but her simple crepes and shortcakes are yummy. Pretty simple to make, too.

Though you really don't need to buy the cookbook for those :) It's pretty much a bunch of low-calorie things put together in pretty ways. Like a dessert shell with low-calorie ice cream with strawberries, low-calorie pudding and fat-free Reddi-Whip. Easy breezy!

I had it on my butt and thighs. Disappeared after 2 months of eating plenty of fruit, drinking lots of water, and adapting to a clean, whole-foods diet. That, combined with tons of cardio and weight-training, made me lose 15 lb and kept my skin taunt.

I hear hard massages help, but are painful.

Artificial sweeteners are horrible for you. Especially in sodas. They tend to stimulate your appetite.

I buy sparkling water, like Pellegrino (I prefer Crystal Geyser), and keep it in the fridge. When you're thirsty, pour yourself a glass and add a splash of juice. Pulpy orange juice or ruby red grapefruit juice works really well. The whole glass will be about 15-20 calories and taste amazzzzinnnggg ^^
Weight Loss Anyone afraid of gaining fat/weight back? May 16 2008

Small gains while I'm actively trying to lose weight don't affect me. I worry about reaching my goal and THEN gaining weight. I don't know how to maintain. If anything, dieting gives me a feeling of self-satisfaction (not to an extreme, anorexia sense, I've been there before and it's much different) because I feel like I am treating myself well by eating healthful foods and exercising for a purpose. My weight loss has been very slow, which I am not complaining about because I know that it's the slow loss that lasts, and I eat a ton of food every day and feel satisfied and not deprived.

That being said, when in maintenance, I feel that I won't be able to find my balance and stress myself out over gaining permanent fat mass. Once I reach my goal (in about 5 lb) I don't know how I'll be able to stay there. It seems that it's always either up or down for me, and I'm actually terrified of a skinnier me. It seems that being so would turn me into a stress ball... trying not to lose and trying not to gain at the same time. Does anybody else have this problem? Haha.

Weight Loss Birth Control May 16 2008
22:12 (UTC)

The "increase in appetite" varies by the woman taking the pill and the pill itself. As others have said, it is not directly responsible for true weight (fat) gain (bloating does not count). A lot of women seem to use that excuse, ha, although there are a VERY SMALL percentage of women who actually experience drastic hormonal changes that can contribute to this. Very, very small percentage.

For myself, birth control REGULATED my hormones. Moodiness decreased and my increase of appetite was exactly when it should be- during the part of my cycle that burns more calories. I actually feel I should credit birth control to helping me lose weight :)

It takes a while for most women to find a pill suitable for them. I started out on the OrthroEvra patch... didn't work out well for me, made me irritable as all hell and gave me a skin reaction. I switched to Ortho Tricyclin, and am now on the lo-dosage version of that pill since my family has a history of high blood pressure. :) No complaints here :)

I almost forgot to weigh in! Finals/graduation are stressing me out! I DON'T WANT TO GO TO MED SCHOOL ::cries:: Well thankfully I'm the type of person who loses her appetite because of stress. And it's also caused me to go to the gym often because I can't sleep otherwise.

[5/12] Past Monday : 120.6
[5/15] Today: 120.2

Weighed in the morning after eating breakfast.

5 lb to go!

I just picked it up today at Borders. Right in front in the "New Releases" section =)  And it really never hurts to ask or use the computer to search for it. Should be there.

I just made the onion rings... Maybe I did something wrong, but the Fiber One cereal for traditional breadding was pretty horrible.

Mine too. It doesn't help that I live in Westwood Village (the heart of UCLA) and there are tons of 24-hour places around here. In-N-Out is my ultimate AM weakness. Even though there's a 24-hour amazing deli practically right next to me I still go for the burger.

I've tried to mediate this by cooking more at home. I am a good cook, and I usually cook for myself when my boyfriend isn't here (he lives in Boston, but he's actually moving here in 4 days! Yay and ACK for my weight!). That's usually when I lose weight, lol. But I made him promise that we'd eat in more... he loves my salads, sandwiches, stews, roasts and pastas but he always feels bad if I spend more than an hour on a meal, which is why we go out so much. Not this time though! I'm determined to wean him off the junk food... he's stick skinny but it's not good for him anyway =P

Okay yay! Here goes for my first accountability group!

I'm Euni, 22, UCLA premed student!

Height: 5'5"
Highest weight: 155 lb
Lowest weight: 98 lb

Start weight: 120.4 (in the morning, after going to the bathroom but also after eating breakfast)

Goal for this challenge = 115 lb by June 12... I want to be fit when I graduate!

I finally managed to break a small plateau and start losing again by re-joining 24 Hour Fitness and switching up my exercise routine. Still eating tons of high-fiber foods and adding 200 extra calories of healthy fats back in. I finally think I can do this the right way... no more yo-yoing or weakness due to lack of energy. Go team! We can do it!
Weight Loss dieting and menstrual cramps May 12 2008
23:31 (UTC)

I didn't get cramps or many other pre-menstrual symptoms when I weighed more (155 tops), but my flow was longer and heavier.

When I was severely underweight (about 98 lb @ 5'4") my period was a 2-day span of intense cramps (I'd literally be lying on the floor clutching my abdomen) and a light, sporadic flow.

Now it's sort of a happy medium. Cramps aren't too bad as long as I watch what I eat and exercise, and my flow usually only lasts 3 days (the first being somewhat heavy, and then light after that)
Weight Loss Is that feeling of being full, an unnatural one? May 12 2008
21:18 (UTC)

I think I know how you feel. I'm so used to eating moderate (but satisfying) portions that I'm unused to feeling stuffed. Once in a while after a meal, I'll have a little extra snack... I find that I can't seem to handle the amount of food I used to. I feel ridiculously full after, and like you, I drink a lot of liquids.

It actually helped me because it made me realize that the portions I'm eating are perfect and I don't need to eat more.

You all put me to shame! Congratulations on your weight-loss success!

From my highest starting weight (155 lb) it's taken me almost 2 years to get down to where I am now... 121 lb. The weight loss seems to be suspended at the moment... blah. I have exactly 6 more pounds to go.
Weight Loss anyone planning a cheat day for mother's day? May 11 2008
12:14 (UTC)

I'm taking my mommy to brunch at Joans on Third... that should be a good 1000-calorie eggs benedict/mimosa fest. I ordered a dozen Sprinkles Cupcakes... don't even want to think about how many of those I'll be scarfing. And then my brother is taking the whole family to Morton's Steakhouse for dinner... definitely not going to be a "skinny" day for me. But I haven't cheated in over 3 months so hopefully this will be the "jolt" that gets me out of this stupid 121 plateau. It's Mother's Day... and nothing makes my Asian mother happier than seeing her daughter eat plenty of good food. :)
Weight Loss Cutting Sugar May 10 2008
05:36 (UTC)
3
I managed to cut out all added sugar and sugar subsitutes after slowly eliminating it from my diet. Aside from my Fiber One cereal, my sugars come from whole foods and fruits. Diet sodas and Spenda were hard to give up but after I made the initial change, I realized that artificial sugar made me feel sick and bloated. I feel soooooo much better after making the change and my tastebuds feel CLEAN now. It's definitely like breaking an addiction, but once you can get over the initial cravings without trying to make due with sugar-free snacks, you just.. stop craving. So if I were to eat a piece of chocolate or candy, it would taste almost too sweet for me. Yay =D

I get that bloat before my period too. While I won't say I enjoy the actual puffiness, I LOVE the time after. See, I stick to my workout routine and diet normally during this time even though the scale creeps up. Then, during my period, the scale drops down and voila~ it's minus water weight AND the weight I thought I should have lost before my period! Whee!
Weight Loss atkins diet May 09 2008

I like to put it this way.

It works for people. That's been proven. But it goes against what natural human diets are supposed to be- what we are genetically coded to process efficiently into our bodies for nutrients. That alone turns me off completely. We are not naturally carnivores, and forcing the body to turn to ketosis for energy does not appeal to me.

I hear it is pretty miserable the first two weeks as well. And a slip-up or two (even just a small piece of cupcake or bread) messes you up big-time.

Consider, also, that summer is coming up. Do you really want to be eating heavy meats and proteins when some of the juiciest, fresh fruit and veggies are in ripe season?

In the end, your choice. And if you can stick to it and lose the weight and NOT gain it back, kudos! You'll be part of the very small percentage of people who have been able to maintain the Atkins lifestyle.

I tend to not care. If people are happy with continually eating choices that contribute to weight gain or an unhealthy lifestyle, well more power to them for not caring. By making those choices they are taking responsibility for themselves, regardless of their size. I personally wish I could eat without care, but I can't and don't because it's detrimental to my own health and happiness.

I don't know what the person's lifestyle is like. It could be a reward or "cheat day meal" for them and they could be very active, happy and healthful otherwise. You never know. And as self-conscious I personally am, I don't concern myself with others' food choices. The only reason why I look in the first place is because I want to see if things look yummy to me and whether or not I should order the same :)

Weight Loss Weight Loss and Sagging Skin May 08 2008
17:28 (UTC)
5
My friend lost 100 lb in 3 months with no sagging skin. Granted, he's a multi-millionaire and had the luxury of paying for a nutritionalist and trainer, but his lack of saggy skin came from drinking plenty of water, eating plenty of fruits and veggies, and paying for $600-a week elasticity massages. He told me that would be cheaper in the long run than paying for surgery to remove all the excess skin in the end. I don't know if this is an option for everyone because of the price but I do know that his skin is taunt and firm all around... at a lower price and a less-invasive proceedure than reconstructive surgery.

But he also was 19 when he lost the weight. That might have been a factor?

I know how you feel!!!!!!

I too am Asian American. And I feel horrible every time I go to Korea or Japan (where the average BMI of women is 20-21). I'm heavier than most girls by about 15-20 lb, regardless of their height (damn, Koreans especially are getting TALL... 5'7" - 5'9"!). I could never buy clothes there! HAHA. Didn't help that ladies at stores would TELL you that you were too big for their wares... well, at least they're honest.

I have huge thighs from years of playing basketball and volleyball. After I graduated high school, the muscles in my thighs turned to stubborn fat. I wish I could get to a point where I really liked them but it's difficult, especially since all my friends in the US are mostly Asian-American as well and I always feel self-conscious about them. I admire you for your self-acceptance and hope that I'll be able to feel the same way about myself someday.

Weight Loss General bikini question (for both guys and girls) May 04 2008

Doedoebird...

Thank you for your reply. I've read everybody elses' as well and have heard a lot of good responses.... but I took more heart with yours.

I know exactly how you feel. I am also Asian and most of my friends are Asian as well. The "standard" for our bodies are so much lower than the American standard. What is it... Americans on average weigh 150 lb and are 5'4"? Something like that? Well when I lived in Korea for a year (last year) and in Japan for another half year... it was completely different. I was literally the fattest person in every room, though I was still a normal, healthy weight over here in the US, but when I went shopping at Korean/Japanese department stores they never had my size. I was constantly being scrutinized for my weight by EVERYONE around me. Restaurant workers, store employees, you name it. Even when I got down to about 133 lb, I was still too big for the countries standard.

I mean, come on. When the average size for a country is 5'4" and 100 lb... AVERAGE size... you're fat. Period.

And I don't think people realize I'm still held to the same standard here in America. I don't care to compare myself to non-Asian bodies. Not because I'm racist, but because I don't have the kind of body that caucasians do. No hip/butt area that can be proportionally bigger (if you mention "apple/pear" shapes in Asia they just look at you cluelessly)... I fall into about the same body shape as most Asians. And if you were to see everybody who is LIKE you at a much smaller standard... come on, who wouldn't doubt themselves? Slim or normal for many is fat for Asians.

In any case, I realize that I have deep-set issues with this. I do think my trip overseas has made me think of myself in a different light and hold myself to a different "average" than what US body tables hold me to. It's hard to be okay with yourself if your "people" do not see you as okay. And by people, I mean entire race.
