Mirror doesn't usually work for me.  I've lost a good 40 pounds before and couldn't SEE it when I looked in the mirror.
Weight Loss getting under 1,000 calories? Jun 01 2007
00:26 (UTC)
Though Oprah and Bob swear you shouldn't eat past 7 or whatever it is...most wouldn't agree.  My trainers have always told me to eat.  If you don't eat after 7 and you sleep until 7...that's 12 hours your body is starving.  As previously stated...starvation mode isn't good when trying to lose weight.

When you don't eat you will lose at first, but after a while your body freaks out thinking this is a trend.  Thinking you are on a deserted island and might not get another meal for months.  So, the very next thing you give it it's like "Holy crap, food...better store this...I say we put it in her thighs."  It will continue to store food like a chipmunk until you've convinced it that all is right with the world and you are eating again.  It's the same thing with water.

The body is a tricky lil thing.  If you give it the same amount of calories every day it will get used to it and you will lose less.  If you do the same exercises every day it will get used to it and you will lose less.  You always have to keep it on it's toes.  However, my trainers have always recommended eating 5 or 6 small meals a day and keeping to a schedule for the same reasons I listed about starvation.  Your internal clock will be like "Tight, we're getting another meal at 10:00...we don't need to hang on to this stuff."

You're still a growing girl.  What was your BMR?  I would recommend exercising as much as you can and still eating and getting in those calories.  Just make sure they're healthy options.  Besides, the faster you lose it, the faster you are likely to put it back on if you don't keep in line with whatever method you used to lose it.

weights build muscle.

muscle burns cals/fat.

1 pound of muscle takes up less space than 1 pound of fat (if you have a pound of metal and a pound of popcorn...which takes up less space?)

As you gain muscle the scale might not be your friend though...focus on measurements and how your clothes fit instead.
Fitness Exercise-related....what to do with my long hair?!? May 30 2007

my hair probably isn't as long as most of yours BUT...

a. I tie it all up in a really sloppy ponytail/bun thing lol.  Probably not pretty, but I'm about to be all sweaty and funky, perfectly coifed hair isn't my priority at the moment.

b. I use "bed head", in a stick kind of like deoderant, and put it on the spots around my face that always seem to have whispies.  I usually pull my hair back in the morning when it's still slightly wet after my shower and then go on whispie maintenance.  By the time i go to the gym in the afternoon my hair is just plain used to be pulled back.

note:  don't go crazy with the bed head or your hair will be gross.  Just use a tiny bit.

Shelly,

Good morning.  If you want a friend that can relate and help you through...I'm more than willing.  I'm not that far from you.  Just a hop, skip, and a wiggle over the Oregon/Washington border.  Let me know.  If you want to know more about my life long battle with the beast you can go to the website i linked in my profile and read up...if you have the time.  Let me know.

My only concern would be...can you keep it up?  It's been my experience that the best way to lose weight is in a manner that you can keep up the rest of your life.  If not, you might gain it back.  Be careful.

Weight Loss Whey Protein shakes May 30 2007

My trainer has me drinking a pure whey protein shake.  She prefers that I eat other things with it though.  Not to use it as meal replacement, but more as meal enhancement.  She doesn't want me having more than 2 a day.  Since I'm supposed to have protein at every meal (5 or 6 meals a day), I'll sometimes toss in a shake when I'm not incorporating protein in other ways...like at breakfast since i don't have time to cook in the morning.  I lost about 20 pounds in a couple months time, was working out a lot and eating a lot of veggies.  I was starting to have a lot of energy, but then had a setback with an injury.  I'm just now picking things back up.

Hope that helps.

That'd be me too.  I just joined this site today to help me recommit.  I'm not on a "diet", it's lifestyle for me too.  I eat 5 or 6 small meals a day and work out.  No quick fix.  Lots of protein, water, veggies, etc.  The "old fasioned" way.  I started at 360, got down to 340, stopped working out for a few months because of a back injury and am now at 345 and back at it with a vengeance.  Good luck

Weight Loss Coffee and weight loss May 29 2007

How much coffee are we talking about?  I have an average of one cup a day during the week and don't think it affects my weight loss either way.  Be careful of what you put IN your coffee.  Obviously the best thing to drink is water, but a little coffee isn't going to make or break your diet.  I would say that any drinks aside from water should be had in moderation.
Weight Loss New here...and getting discouraged May 29 2007

I'm new to the board (as of 10 minutes ago), but definitely not new to weight loss attempts.  I learned a very valuable lesson recently that I think will help you.  Get rid of your scale.  Not permanently, but for a while at least.

When I am in the zone and really focused on trying to lose weight I weigh myself 3 or 4 times a day and if I don't see what I want I sabotage myself.  I'm a bonified emotional eater and that's all I usually need to justify a binge.  I've always known that the number was not what was important, but I could NOT stay off the scale or get it in my head that my measurements and how my clothes fit is all I needed to worry about.  The number is what we've all be trained to use to guage our success.

I finally gave my scale over to my trainer/friend for a while.  She had it for a couple months.  I started to get used to not getting on the scale and finding my proof of loss in other venues...feeling better, more energy, jeans that didn't fit before, loss of inches.  Once I got it back I didn't put it in my bathroom.  I didn't want to see it all the time and have to fight the urge.  I put it in the guest bathroom and now I have to really remember to check it once a week.  It has completely changed how I go about this journey.

Good luck.
