| Fitness | personal trainer - very discouraging introductory session | Jul 01 2008 21:27 (UTC) |

My story is very similar to yours except I'm a few years older and my kids are about grown. The situation with the personal trainer would have made me very angry. What trhawley said is probably true but the gym is not a place for a "hard" sell. I would continue working out but I would also inform the manager or owner (if it is a family business) of what was said and how it made you feel. Not only were the trainers words bad for your self esteem but they were also bad for the gyms business. If your concerns were not addressed or things are poorly handled I would look for somewhere else to work out. Best wishes! |

I use it as a substitute for sour cream in dips and baking. I also eat it with honey and/or fruit. |

A very accurate electronic postage scale works very well and can be had for less than $20 at Walmart. It weighs up to 5 lbs in grams, ounces or a combination of pounds and ounces. I've had mine for quite a while now and love it. |

How's your caffeine intake? My husband was having those same symptoms from a caffeine overload so he decided to quit cold turkey and ended up in ER thinking he was dying. He's fine. He just got a good scare and learned his lesson. Now he restricts his caffeine to about one soda a week and no more problems. |

How much caffeine are you consuming during and before your work out? Consuming some high carb drink with out the caffeine will help keep you in balance. Also you may be trying to do too much and need to back off and build up gradually to a higher level of exercise. |

| Foods | More Important to Avoid Sodium or Sugars | Apr 03 2008 00:19 (UTC) |
|
Chemically Sodium is Sodium. The high sodium levels in todays processed foods are a great contributor to much of the high blood pressure and kidney disease that is so common. My goal is to avoid both sodium and sugar. Both are only necessary in small quantities yet they are so easy to abuse. Salt and sugar both mask the natural flavors of real unprocessed foods. They also cover the lack of freshness and possibly the spoilage of many items. Keep up with your food log and don't go over the RDA of either and congratulate yourself when you stay below it. |

| Weight Loss | What should I have for dinner...family not supportive! | Mar 18 2008 22:46 (UTC) |

Salads are always easy and healthy if you eat them with low fat dressing and lower fat cheese. Canned soups (not the creamed varieties) are good and easy but usually high in sodium. We like to eat boneless chicken breast strips grilled in a skillet on top of the stove. These are great sprinkled with Italian seasoning and garlic powder. They are fast and easy and are great added to a salad. Another idea is to wrap a potato in plastic wrap, poke a few holes in it and microwave it until soft. Eat this with fat free sour cream or cheese, throw in some micro steamed broccoli and you have a tasty, filling dinner. BTW, I'm the Mom of 5 and all my kids boys and girls can cook things like this with no problem. God bless! |

I find that my favorite sugar free hot beverage (usually 2 cups) helps satisfy my craving for food. This fills up my stomach and helps me feel warm which really adds to my comfort. I agree with lovesthelord, knowing that God has already experienced everything that I'm going through really helps when I need to ask for self control. |

| Thanks all! I am very big on home grown veggies, and whole foods. Sometimes for variety I would like to have something different. Also, I guess my major rant is that other people can eat these products why can't I. Fortunately I do not have the problems many others do with allergies and reactions and I need to enjoy the wide variety that suits me and get over the self pity. Sometimes tho, I feel I am not getting sufficient protein. (yes I do eat lots of legumes but only so many ways and for so long) The black bean burgers sound wonderful and I haven't thought of this approach to beans. I teach school so it might be summer vacation before I can really experiment to find what I really like. BTW I have lost 50 pounds and hope to post a new pic soon. :) | |||
| Fitness | Feet cramps | Jan 12 2008 03:07 (UTC) |

| My chiropractor stresses magnesium. The type he recommends is water soluble and is called Natural Calm. Calcium helps the muscles tense but magnesium relaxes them. If the cal-mag ratio is imbalanced you will get cramps. I have had great success with this treatment. | |||

| Fitness | Dog attack | Jan 05 2008 00:55 (UTC) |

| Chows and Chow X's are notorious for attacks on humans. My mailman has found that many dogs are infuriated by both mace and pepper spray. Many dogs have been intimidated by people with sticks and will chose a person with a walking stick or umbrella to attack. My vote for protection would be a long sharp ended hunting knife and be sure you know how to use it or better yet get your carry permit and purchase a small handgun. I know one person who was still able to strangle a dog though they were severely bitten but don't count on getting that chance. Unfortunately I have had several encounters with stray dogs attacking my sheep and know what damage and suffering they can cause and I will not hesitate to kill an aggressive dog that comes onto my farm no questions asked. | |||
| Health & Support | REALLY painful 2nd degree burn!!!!! plz help :( | Jan 03 2008 00:34 (UTC) |

| I am the mom of 5 children, a former professional baker and my oldest son worked for a time in a donut shop (thnk very large vat of hot grease). I have treated many large burns and all have healed successfully with out infection. Please, what ever you do try not to pop the blister. It will probably pop on its own and when it does have a good antibacterial soap like dial on hand. Was the ooze and dead skin away. dry around the wound then apply a thick coat of zinc oxide cream. This is sold as diaper rash cream like desatin but store brands sometimes have a higher zinc content get the highest you can find. Take gauze squares that have been covered with Bag Balm, Utter Butter or other antibacterial cream preferably containing lanolin unless you are allergic to it. Place the gauze squares carefully covering the zinc covered wound then use a small elastic bandage to hold it in place. If you use sticky tape to hold the dressing in place you will have to tug to remove it (OUCH!) Change the dressing at least 2 to 3 times a day washing away as much old zinc cream as you can without scrubbing. (It won't all come off and that's OK) If you don't let the burn dry out there will be a minimum or scaring. At any time the area around the wound swells or gets red and warm, there is a foul smelling odor, or you run a fever go directly to the emergency room... Do not wait. I hope everything goes well. | |||
| Foods | Cooking venison. | Dec 02 2007 20:54 (UTC) |

We are given venison on a regular basis. Sometimes I dress it sometimes others do. We also kill our own sheep. For venison I soak the part to be cooked in salt water especially if it was near the bullet wound. I soak it until most of the blood is out (a couple hours), rinse and soak again. This rids the meat of much of the gaminess. If I have a roast many times I will sprinkle it with garlic, cover with thinly spiced onion and lay some bacon across the top to keep it moist. It can be cooked this way in the oven or put in the crock pot on high for 6 hrs.   ; Then again, we have several pounds of jery in the dehydrator right now. My boys intend to send some to a hunting buddy in Iraq. You might want to try that. |

| Vegetarian | meat recalls, Topps meat company closes doors after 67 years | Oct 08 2007 03:26 (UTC) |

In most E.Coli outbreaks in veggies (in the US) that have happened recently it has not been the meat processing industry that has been to blame. The veggies have either been contaminated by wild hogs (yes those do exist in large herds in the Southern U.S.) or by some company,(usually Mexican or central American) washing the produce in water tainted with human fecal matter. I feel that everyone should have the choice as to what foods they consume. Call me a barbarian, heartless or whatever but we prefer to raise our own meat and butcher it at home. I feel I get the best meats handled under the least stressed and most sanitary conditions even if it is dispatched and dressed in the back yard. I don't butcher for a living, I butcher because I do not trust someone else to kill my animals painlessly and quickly. |

| White tea is the mildest of all real teas. It is made from the first buds of the tea plant. I love any real tea with no artificial flavors. Stash and Salada brand teas are about awsome though there are much better and pricy brands to be had. Earl Gray and Lady Jane Gray are two of my favorite afternoon varieties. | |||

| I've done the 30 hr famine and attempted it once before that. What ever you do get off the caffene and any other stimulant days in advance of the famine. I would not recomend sports drinks because of the possibility of heart arrythmia and blood pressue changes from the sudden rush of sugars and stimulants on an empty stomach. (been there, done that, not a nice situation) Go with unrefined carbs just before the famine begins and add just a bit of electrolite powder. To keep you from crashing. | |||
| Weight Loss | does anyone make their own yogurt? | Sep 10 2007 00:55 (UTC) |
|
| I never use a yogurt maker. I had one way back when but found it unnecessary and in the way. I use non fat milk powder, plain Dannon yogurt and a glass quart jar. Mix up 1 and 1/3 cups milk powder (actually you get a better set if you add another 1/3 cup milk powder to the mix) and 1 quart of hot (not boiling) water. Make sure the milk powder is completely disolved. If the milk is not very warm to the touch heat it slowly. Add about a large tablespoon of yogurt when the milk is around 105 degrees F. Place the milk mix in the clean glass jar and set in a gas oven, a styro cooler or even wrap a large towel around it and leave for 6 hours. If you want a tart yogurt you may let it set up to 10 hours. Refrigerate when set and to the desired taste. We have eaten gallons of homemade yogurt over the years. Sometimes we add honey, fresh whole fruit preserves or use it instead of sour cream. | |||
