Another morning person here, but I have been an early bird for so many years now, even when I wasn't using that time to workout, that I hardly notice it. I like being able to start the day knowing that I've made that time for myself and gotten the workout done, as so often something can come up during the day that makes scheduling the workout difficult. I eat a bit of something before I workout so I have some fuel in the tank before I start, and then eat my breakfast after. |

I lost 130+ pounds and I'm coming up on my two year anniversary of maintaining that. I can say that I am definitely a happier person, but it's not because of the weight loss per se, it's because of the whole process I went through of having to work out all of the emotional eating habits I'd acquired. I really had to dig into some old thought patterns and ways of doing things and replace them healthy and positive methods. And I found that the weight loss did have immediate and lasting positive effects on my overall health and fitness. |

Congrats on that 10 pounds loss! I agree with the poster who advised to set smaller goals. I lost 130 pounds by doing it 10 pounds at a time. As I got closer to my healthy goal weight, I did it 5 pounds at a time. It didn't seem quite so daunting a task that way. Plus, you get to do the happy dance a lot more often. For chips, you could try home made tortilla chips too. Just get corn tortillas, cut them up in chip size triangles, use olive oil spray or a light glaze of olive oil and put in the oven till they're nicely crispy. You may find as you go along that you'll lose some of the cravings for the not-as-healthy foods and start loving and craving some of the good stuff. |

| Weight Loss | Poll: Good method to loose weight without having loose skin | Nov 16 2009 05:04 (UTC) |

I lost 130+ pounds over about 16 months and I have some loose skin. Under arm - what I call turkey flaps - that no matter how much weight lifting I do, still fly in the breeze. Also, the saddlebag area and belly, esp. if I'm leaning over. On the other hand, I'm 53, my husband has seen me at my very worst (think 130 pounds ago), and ya know, in public I have a habit of wearing clothes. I'll take some sags over diabetes or heart disease. You should be fine since you don't have too much weight to lose. |

I posted to this thread last year, but it's eternally interesting to figure out what to do for Thanksgiving. I always offer to have it at our house, but no one else in my family of omnivores is ever interested, boo. Anyway, we are going to my husband's cousin's house this year, where our only menu option for eating appeared to be mashed potatoes, judging by the conversation I had with my sister-in-law, who is doing the cooking. Sigh. I have agreed to bring something, but since the oven will be busy, it will have to be something easily stuck in the microwave for a quick reheat. I think I'll make one of my old reliable lentil recipes just because its no fuss. And I'll also bring a golden beet salad with pomegranate seeds that's extremely tasty. |

I'm one who started losing weight specifically because my health was going downhill - high blood pressure, right on the cusp of developing pre-diabetes and pretty bad cholesterol too. I couldn't keep my head stuck in the sand any more. I've been maintaining for a couple of years now and all of those problems have gone away and I feel great. It's just a nifty side benefit that I look darn good too. |

Delicata squash - baked with just the tiniest hint of brown sugar, and they are sooo yummy. I don't know why I didn't try them before. They have a flavor and texture closer to a sweet potato than a squash like a butternut. |

All time: asparagus. Steamed by itself or pretty much any other thing with asparagus as a theme. I make a grilled asparagus with garlic mustard marinade over orzo that's pretty amazing. Dessert: Rich chocolate cake. Fast Food Meal: none. If I have to I'll eat a Subway veggie delite Breakfast food: kashi go lean crunch Drink: strong black coffee Candy: dark chocolate Snack: a tablespoon (or two) of almond butter Chips: well, in the bad old days, I would have said Cheetos. I don't eat them any more. Healthy Food: too much to choose from. TV Dinner: If I have to have a frozen dinner, I can tolerate an Amy's pot pie. |

Congratulations on losing all that weight! I've also lost a lot of weight, and continue to count calories and pay attention, although it's getting somewhat easier now after almost two years of maintenance to relax about things. Definitely, you should be able to enjoy some of your favorite treats and for sure, some of Mom's home cooking without blowing your weight loss away. Have to agree that it shouldn't be necessary to just eat veggies for the rest of the day, just pay attention to portions and maybe have a somewhat lighter day the next day, and make sure to drink enough water. I think guesstimating is not a bad strategy. What I do is try to find something in the database that seems close and logging that. For restaurant meals, I typically add in a little extra oil because I figure those dishes have probably got more than I think, certainly more than I use at home. For your Mom's home cooked meals, have you thought about asking for some of the recipes and plugging them into the recipe analyzer here? Then you'd have a pretty good idea on those. |

| Weight Loss | Mistaking healthy weight loss for an eating disorder | Oct 26 2009 21:31 (UTC) |

I lost 140 pounds over the course of about 16 months or so and I heard this too. I had three standard tactics: 1. Tell them my current weight and BMI - this is shocking because NO ONE wants to say what their weight is. 2. Blind them with science, 'cause you know, when you're tracking calories and you know what your macros are and you've learned a lot about nutrition and all, it's easy to start droning on and on, until their eyeballs roll back into their head. 3. Appeal to the "higher authority" as mentioned above, as in "doctor's orders!" |

Even better, dark chocolate has a good amount of anti-oxidant flavonoids, so there's a health benefit to eating small amounts. Link Plus, it tastes good. |

I'm 5'5", medium to large frame, and I'm currently maintaining, with my weight fluctuating between 137 - 142. I do a lot of weightlifting and am fairly muscular, which has actually translated into smaller clothes sizes without having to lose any more weight. This is a happy weight for me, I wouldn't want to go any lower. |

1. candy - Godiva Chocolate. I always used to buy a box for my mom for Christmas, but I won't this year because unfortunately, she's been diagnosed with diabetes. So I can't very well show up with illness in a box. 2. cookie/bar - any of Mom's homemade cookies, but see above, so this year probably not 3. main dish - my special lentil recipe with the phyllo crust. I made it last year for Thanksgiving and I'm going to again. The secret is the red wine in the sauce 4. side dish - salad: celery with walnuts and a homemade champagne vinaigrette. Also a Thanksgiving recipe 5. pie/cake - pumpkin! Yes! |

Here's a link to the "chair aerobics" thread - click. I used the DVD when I was having knee issues and just wanted to be able to get some activity in so I wouldn't go nuts. The DVDs in the series are aimed at anybody who is recuperating from illness or injury or is otherwise unable to do any typical high impact aerobic stuff, and yes, it's basically lightweight aerobics but it was better than nothing. I think the Sit & Be Fit videos are somewhat similar. I kept doing a good upper body weight training routine, and also started working on one-legged weights work as soon as I could. For you I would think that's going to depend on what your doctor recommends and how capable you are after the surgery. |

A History of Science professor in college - actually he may not have been a bad teacher at all, but his grooming was appalling and when he lectured, there were these little balls of spittle that gathered in the corners of his mouth. The whole time. I was so disgusted (yet mesmerized) I had to withdraw from the class, I just couldn't stay in it. |

There's an easier way. Slice off the flesh on either side of the large pit in the middle - you'll have two big pieces and then some flesh still left around the pit. Take one of the big pieces and slice a checkerboard into the flesh, down to the skin. Use a spoon to scoop out the cubes. The little bits around the pit are a little harder, I try to slice around it as well as I can and then - well, gnaw the rest because it's so yummy! I had mango this morning, yum. |
