Thanks for the encouraging words about my son. I just found out that our local Harley Davidson store is having a big thing on Saturday where the police will be teaching people about motorcycle AND bicycle traffic safety and laws. I will be there with my son. He will probably love all the cool bikes there.

ssbuckeye, you may want to invest in some bike shorts. They are padded in just the right spots for that sensitive bum.

Big announcement (drum roll please): I am riding with my son!!!! He got a bike Saturday at his birthday party and we got adult training wheels for him (for those of you who don't know, I have a 12-year old autistic son). So he rode it on the sidewalk Saturday. Well disaster struck when one of the training wheels got stuck between the pavement and the grass. Down he went! Then came the tears and a big bruise on his chest. He told me that he would never ride again (this is what I feared would happen). Tonight I told him that he could only have a cupcake if he went for a ride with me. I promised him that we would not be going fast and that since I was with him, we could ride on the street where the training wheels would not get stuck. Off we went. We were going so slow that I had a hard time keeping my balance. Slowly he gained confidence and we worked on staying on the right side of the road. Because of the autism his hand/eye coordination is pretty bad so it is going to take a while but we have all summer to work on this. I am so excited! No more Mr couch potato.

juliebean1078, I started out with an inexpensive Schwinn bike from Target about a year ago. Even though it is not the best bike if you are considering Tour de France, it got me hooked on riding and I suffered from severe "seperation anxiety" when I got rid of it. It all depends on what you want to do. My autistic 12-year old son is going to start riding with me but there is no way he can come with me on my daily 30 mile ride so we are starting out with riding down to the gas station and back (probably no more than 1 mile all together). I will say that I love my Trek. It really impressed me that I could pull it out from the basement after having sat there all winter and all it needed was air in the tires and the chain oiled.

A coworker bought my Schwinn and she is very upset because her husband keeps stealing it, lol.

Hi all, I have been "hybernating" but finally the weather is good and I got the Trek out from the basement. All it needed was air in the tires and the chain oiled and it was ready to go. I figured I had lost all my strength over the winter but I made it up to work and back (12 miles) without any problems. Hopefully this summer I won't get attacked by any groundhogs or ride straight into a ditch, lol.

Good news about my son. His birthday is May 7th and we got him a new bike with adult training wheels. I can't wait to ride with him!

Hope everyone is doing great.

Hi all, hope everyone survived the holidays. I was sick on christmas and in bed by 10:30 New Year's Eve, lol.

I have been out of the loop for a while because of some school stuff going on with my son. And then the cold hit - I guess I am a freezebaby. Yesterday it warmed up and I took the Trek for a spin. Then I really wanted to get out there tonight. When i opened the garage, it was pouring down rain (I mean serious bucket rain). Didn't stop me though and I am now sitting here soaked but feeling so good about getting back on the bike. We are supposed to have snow over the weekend but I really want to get some miles in.

Well, just wanted to let everyone know that I am still alive.

Wow, China is not doing too good right now. Lead tainted toys and now illegal drugs. It will be interesting to see who will get caught.

I just made a terrible mistake. Didn't eat anything this morning, wolfed down two Red Bulls and did 35 miles on the bike. I am shaking so bad right now! Did I learn my lesson? Probably not, lol.

gmule, I will be out there this winter. Not on the Trek though. I will cry like a little baby if something happened to it because of winter weather. So I will be back on the Schwinn as soon as the snow starts - riding to and from work. I am also looking at spinning classes for the winter.

Thanks bunches. I have not checked the actual cable so that may be the problem. If it is broken, then I will just buy a new computer since it is a cheap one. I forgot about calculating all that stuff on mapmyride. I use the site all the time but have not entered any of that information before.

I was able to get out there this morning (yeah!) and I enjoyed every moment of it. It is amazing how much stress relief you can get on a bicycle.

Now I am going to sit down and make some realistic long term and short term goals for myself.

Tomorrow night I am attending a meeting with the Medina Bicycle club and I am giving them a proposal for a fundraiser for Autism United. Hopefully we can pull it off next summer some time.

ROF, my stupid dog is chasing a fly and she just slammed into the sliding glass door - not a dull moment at my house.

Thanks mlbtracy, I needed that.

I don't see anyone hooting and hollering about Michael Rasmussen! Lol, just kidding of course.

Technical question for you guys. I just took my cycling computer off the Schwinn and put it on the Trek.  Now I can't get the stupid thing to work at all. It is just a cheap one but it served the purpose when riding the Schwinn. I really need that thing so that I can keep track of my progress (now that I have to start all over again).

I have many heros but they are not that well known. They all belong to this list so take a look in the mirror because that is my hero right there.

I am having a horrible time. Here I thought that I would be able to ride like crazy after school started but I have not been able to get out there at all. Every single day something happens that prevents me from getting on that bike. Tomorrow I am turning off the phone, shutting down the computer and hitting that "ignore" button on the cell when work calls.

Well, I am back in the saddle again. Boy, can I feel that I have not been on my bike for almost two weeks. It is going to take me a little while to get back in the swing of things. I just rode up to work and back again. Then tonight I will ride up there and back.

mlbtracy, I agree with carrihound. You don't want to overdo it. I have to say I am impressed that you finished the ride. I think I would have given up halfway up the hill and cried for my mommy, lol. I am a little concerned that you got dropped. Nobody waited for you?

Joe, that is scary stuff. Those darn kids! I talked to the ENT and we have an appointment this afternoon. It does look like outpatient surgery. Ugh, this one is not going to be fun. I don't want to leave Christopher in the dark about what is going to happen, but if I am not careful he is gonna freak out.

mlbtracy, road bikes can gain some pretty serious speed. I have gotten mine up to 35 mph and then I got scared. I am sure I could have gained more speed but the thought of crashing going that fast made me slow down. Good luck with the group. You will probably find many new friends there.

I told the people I work with that I am going to ride my bike dowwn to Columbus tomorrow for my big meeting. Lol, that is a 2 hour drive in a car. As much as I have been riding, they almost believed me.

Joe, that stubbornness seems to be doing the trick.  The greatest feeling is reaching that finishline or personal goal of a certain amount of miles. I love that feeling!!!!!

Dan, the ice is just fine but I still hear about that one every day. I have to admit it was pretty funny and such a typical thing for me to say.

I have not been able to ride my bike at all for over a week now. Tuesday is the big day when I meet with a state senator, a representative and the department of health. If all goes well (I have no faith in the department of health) then I should be back to enjoying the bike riding again on Wednesday. Since I have been away from it for a while I feel like I will have to start all over again, but that is ok. I am in no hurry.

I have to share something with you guys. It is not related to bike riding at all, but it is quite a story. Saturday I was out running errands with my autistic son. Christopher was chomping away on some candy in the car and suddenly he hands me this "thing". It took a while before I realized it was his tooth. He is 11 so I guess it was a 12-year molar. Well, being developmentally delayed, he still believes in the tooth fairy 100% so we put the tooth in a bag and under his pillow it went. That night I got a desperate phone call from my husband that sounded like this: "Uhm, we are on our way to the ER. Christopher shoved his tooth up his nose and I can't get it out". How the heck could he get that tooth so far up his nose?????  I couldn't help but laugh because I figured they would just use some tweezers at the ER and he would be fine. No such luck!!!! I went down to the ER and met my little family there. The doc couldn't find the tooth and sent Christopher for an x-ray. The verdict was pretty bad. The tooth is so far up his nose that it is almost all the way in his sinuses!!!!! There was no way they could get it out. I now have to call an ENT specialist tomorrow and they are probably going to have to knock him out to get this stupid tooth out of his nose. I still can't get Christopher to tell me how the tooth got from a ziplock bag to deeply embedded in his nose. Oh and here is another problem, what do I do about the tooth fairy?????? Lol, I got that one figured out. i had Christopher write her a letter explaining the situation and there is now a present under his pillow.

Oh life is so grand right now. I just want to ride my bike!!!!!!

Joe, geez that put things into perspective. I am not even going to try for that - all I would do would be discouraging myself. I will just stick with riding more and more miles. The weight loss kind of happens in the process. Besides it is not my looks but rather my big mouth the senator and the department of health has to worry about on the 11th, lol.

This is completely off topic but I have to share one of my biggest "blonde moments" with you guys. I manage a fastfood restaurant and last Saturday I was filling the ice bin. There were tons of customers in the there. I loudly said "How come our ice is so frozen?" Everything in there came to a complete standstill and everybody started laughing at me. What I meant to say was that the ice was coming out in big blocks instead of cubes, but I guess the words got all twisted in my mouth. now every time I come to work, the employees ask me if I have checked the ice lately. Leave it to me to do stupid things.

Well, I better get to bed so that I can get up bright and early and put some miles behind me on the bike before work.

Have a great holiday weekend everyone.

Hi guys, I am back from my little MIA spell. Still riding away every day but I have not been able to really put in the miles like I was hoping to do.

It has now been over a month since I got the Trek and I guess the guy at the bike shop was right. I have had no lose cables or any problems with the gears. I am quite impressed.

Had to go to the doc yesterday because of the arthritis in my spine. She was soooo impressed with my weightloss and the bike riding. She told me I was insane when I told her I went 50 miles just for the fun of it. She should meet some of you guys, lol!!!!

Do you think I can lose 10 lbs between now and Sep. 11th? I have a big meeting with some of the politicians up here and the department of health. Is it doable? If so, how much riding should i be averaging? My eating habits have not changed - I am stuck around 1500 calories per day.

Joe, they don't look too cool but they sure serve a purpose. I may look into the clip-on fenders but i have to look at the cost vs benefit as I don't really ride that much in the rain. The racing stripe up my back is looking pretty cool though - clear from my rear end to my neck.

Now I can't get my bike computer to work. I will have to mess around with it. Not today though since I am off to the wonderful world of Arby's roast beef sandwiches and irresponsible teenage employees. I am covering for a young girl who called off yesterday because she has strep. She said that she would be there today. Uhm hello, strep is contagious - stay home until a doc clears you for work. Food service and strep does not mix.

It is pretty windy out there but I am still riding my bike to work. This will be my first commute with the wind blowing me backwards, lol.

By the way, I saw the weirdest handle bars the other day. These things extended upwards and almost met in the middle. Anyone ever seen those? What is the purpose of handle bars like that? It was an older lady riding the bike.

Dan, that could have been him. He was very nice and seemed like he knew what he was talking about. Please ask him if it was him, and tell him that it was nice to meet him. It was at the gas station in Litchfield.

Joe, our basement took a nice hit from the rain but we got it fixed in no time. Speaking of rain, why do they not put fenders on these bikes? I have a nice line of dirt and water going straight up my back when I am riding in the rain, lol.

I was soo shooting for another good ride tomorrow. now I have to work all day and all night. I swear, these people pounce on me as soon as Christopher starts school. Oh well, I can ride my bike up there.

You guys are amazing!

Here I was getting ready to brag about doing 50 miles today, lol. I have a long way to go. Still, I am proud of going that far. Slowly but steady I will work my way up to the 100 miles. I have a little work to do on my speed and my knees are telling me that they can definitely feel that I haven't been riding much lately. The Trek did great. It is almost as if it is telling me to go further. I stopped at a gas station to rest. Some guy approached me and started talking about what a nice bike I had. It took me a while to realize that he only had one leg. I felt kind of weird talking bikes with him.

gmule, are you feeling better? Are you eating rabbit stew for dinner? LOL.

Well, I better get ready for work. Today is first day of school so I am sure my little hellian is going to come home all tired and grumpy. He informed me yesterday that he likes school because that is where all the girls are. Oh the joy of those pre-teen hormons.

I'm still here but bummed because I haven't been able to ride. That will all change on Wednesday when Christopher goes back to school. I am planning my first 50 mile ride on that day - gosh I can't wait.

I have some serious lobbying ahead of me this fall so I may be MIA from time to time.

I am still shooting for that century ride very soon.

Joe, that is awesome that you were able to go the 67 miles. I have yet to make is past 40 miles.

gmule, you are one stubborn person! Way to go on getting back on the bike.

I have not been able to ride at all since Thursday. i was supposed to go Saturday, but then my father-in-law decided to end up in the hospital (he is ok now) so I never got out there. Tomorrow I am riding to work. It is going to take a tornado touch-down smack right in front of my garage to stop me!

gmule you are definitely in my thoughts as well. Hang in there. What are they doing to treat it while they wait for the results?

This afternoon the thunderstorms let up and I headed to work on my bike. Not 2 minutes after I got there all heck broke lose. I have never seen the sky so dark. We actually had at least one tornado touch down not far from where I work. If I had left home even 5 minutes later, I would have been caught in it. Obviously I was worried about the ride home but by that time at was all clear.

Bethany, welcome. All my riding is road biking. Once I got over my initial fear of riding in traffic (and learned to show patience toward all the ignorant drivers, lol) I really got to enjoy it.

Well I better get back to my never ending fight with the Department of Health - sigh.

I agree with behanna on the comparison of bikes. Now that we are talking about this, I want to take my Schwinn out for a spin, lol.

My son is driving me absolutely nuts today. He firmly believes that we are going to get hit by a tornado just because of a power outage. My sister-in-law is coming to town tonight and all day (every 5 minutes) he asks "is aunt Denise here yet". I need some alone time and a bike ride sounds sooo appealing right now. Unfortunately I have to go to work - ugh. Rain or not, I am riding my bike to work!!!!!!

trhawley, that is exactly what i was thinking. Dragging a couple of gallons of gatorade or the likes around does not appeal to me because that means some kind of thing to carry it in. I am still having problems with having to carry a backpack with my clothes when riding to work. Between shoes and clothes, it gets pretty heavy which means I get to sweat a lot on my back. If I am to do a century ride, I want to pack as little as possible. A couple of bucks for gatorade is not as heavy as a big bottle, lol.

Steel vs aluminum, this one is beyond my technical knowledge but I am indeed being thrown around a lot more on the new bike. Whether it is because of the weight difference (and there is one - I can lift the new bike with one arm; no way I could do that with the old one) or if it is due to the narrower tires, is something that can be discussed. All I know is that there is a difference and I definitely, without a doubt, prefer the new bike. I may get banged up when I hit a pothole but I fly over those hills as if they weren't even there. I have learned the hard way to lift my butt off the seat just a little when hitting a rough spot on the road and it is not that big of a problem anymore. Hitting rocks is a problem as they can cause me to lose control of the bike - sensitive little thing!

Had my first race tonight. Not against a human being but rather a big thunder storm. The storm won and I was soaked when I got home. Oh well, I only got 20 miles in but it is better than nothing. I really didn't want to be out there in the rain as I just cleaned and lubed the chain but I guess I will just have to do it again.

behanna, that is exactly what I want to do when Christopher is back in school - do a century ride solo. i have the route mapped out and all. Here's a question for you. Should I keep all that extra liquid with me or should i just stop by a store a couple of times on the way (since I have to make restroom breaks anyways). I don't want to carry too much stuff with me.

Is it the 22nd yet? School needs to start. My child is burning through my pay checks as if it was monopoly money, lol
