Maintaining Too much attention at new weight Sep 19 2008

This is how I've usually felt when I've lost weight before.

Fat people are "invisible" - no one wants to look twice at them.  Same with old people.  But the opposite sex do take a second (and third) look at slim women.

Now I've lost weight and have a great figure, people do look twice at me (because I've had my hair blonded and I have a youthful figure I think), hehe, but now I'm 45 years old, they look away when they realize I'm old!!  Haha.

I know I used to feel the way you do when I was younger.  I liked dressing young when I'd lost weight, but it did attract some attention and I didn't really like that.  But I was never slim for long, so it didn't make much of an issue.

Not sure what you are going to do about it, other than dress more demurely or becoming a bit more self-confident.

I absolutely love it and appreciate it now if I can get a second look!  Does wonders for my self esteem.  But I hated it when I was younger and less confident.

You also might have a little of the paranoia going too, sorry.
Maintaining stuffed full but gaining on maintenance?? Aug 12 2008

The first thing I would suggest is to eat more things with iron in them to stop you from being light-headed and to give you more energy.  Iron also helps me to stabilise my appetite.  If I'm low in iron I either don't feel that hungry or I feel so depleted I need way more food.

Then I would also recommend eating more protein and doing more exercise that builds muscle.  This will help improve your metabolic rate.

It looks like you aren't eating much dairy, so adding some full fat dairy might help your cause.

Some days when I'm being ultra healthy it is very hard to reach the 2300 calories or more that I need to maintain, so I just make it a regular thing to have 50g of dark chocolate each day, and indulge in a dessert if needed too.  I still can't bring myself to eat full fat cheese or yoghurt though.
Maintaining How did you decide you were happy at your current weight? Jul 19 2008

When I get below a certain weight (120 pounds), my face gets drawn and I look and feel older, my iron level gets low (particularly if I'm exercising more) and my boobs get tiny (I like that bit though).

Even though I feel at 55kg (120 pounds) that the tops of my thighs are fat, I know they aren't too bad as I've had body analysis (fat percentage etc) done and I know it is all just right.  21 percent body fat and really good muscle mass (above average for my age of 45).

So that's how I've worked out my ideal weight.

The Butternut squash and the various pumpkins I tried to eat when I lived in America were very disappointing.

In Australia, pumpkin is a staple dinner vegetable and it can be eaten mashed or roasted.  It tastes delicious just with some salt or pepper.  Not sure why they don't taste as good in America.

I find it is an excellent base for a vegetable (or other) curry!!!

I'm exactly like alaskanmama.  I've maintained over 50 pound weight loss for almost 2 years and I do it by still calorie counting.  It's second nature to me now, so it isn't a bother.  I'll always be OCD about food so at least now I'm at a healthy weight.

It actually serves to make me LESS guilty about eating bad things because if I can fit bad things under my calorie limit then I don't feel one bit guilty about eating them!!!!
Maintaining Restoring Metabolism Jun 28 2008

The way I changed from dieting (on 1300 calories a day) to maintaining was very gradually.  I'd add in an extra 100 calories a day for a week, then add 100 more, then more etc until I stopped losing weight.

I have always been very aware of keeping my metabolism up and the way I've tried to do it is by

1.  Eating frequent meals

2.  Eating lots of veges

3.  Doing lots of exercise

4.  Building up my muscle bulk

Anyway, I've been on 2000 calories net per day for a year and still maintaining. Because I do plenty of exercise I can usually eat 2400 calories a day.  Not bad for a 45 year old female who weighs 120 pounds!!!

What the?

It certainly doesn't sound like maintenance if you've lost 5 pounds.

I reckon I'd lose another 20 pounds if I were to eat like that!

Good on you though if you feel it works for you.  As someone else said, not everyone has to go to those extremes.

Noni, you probably let yourself go back to that weight because you know you can come back.  And you get sick of being vigilant with your food and exercise and just want to relax again.

Or like me, you are good at taking weight off, just not maintaining.  I haven't ever been able to maintain before but this time I count calories (online) every day as I am so not wanting to go back to the way things were.  I lost about 60 something pound (I usually do kilograms so not sure what 30kg is).

I'm hungry all the time!!!!

Luckily I'm able to eat about 2400 calories (with an hour of exercise a day) and maintain my weight.

I'm 45 years old so you could need more than me!  I'm 54kg whatever that is in pounds.
Maintaining Maintainers ~ How do you measure success? Mar 23 2008

You can make yourself little challenges every week if you want.

You could have a food related challenge, a physical activity challenge and a self esteem challenge.

eg By next Monday I want to have

eaten 5 serves of vegetables per day

gone for a walk for 40 mins on at least three days

taken time out for an indulgent bubble bath two times

Those ones sound really boring, but they are examples.

You could even start a thread in maintenance about challenges and goals.
Maintaining Does this sound right? Mar 08 2008

No, your BMI is 17.5 (or less if you really are 68.5 inches, not 5 ft 7 - they both can't be right, although onlineconversion.com says it's right - I thought there were 60 inches in 5 feet?), which is underweight.

The website I use (calorieking.com.au - the Australian one, not the American one) says you ought to be between 58 and 76 kg - you are currently under 52kg.  And you ought to be eating 2517 cals to get to your ideal weight.

Now if you were a few inches shorter and 112 pounds was your ideal weight, then you would need to eat 1995 calories (with a 45 min walk each day) to maintain.

I am a few inches shorter than you, 118 pounds and a 45 year old female and I eat 2300 calories a day for maintenance (one hour of physical activity each day).  But the calculators say I should be eating 1500 calories per day (you need less as you get older apparently).  It's different for everyone.
Maintaining maintaining and gaining muscle....required calories .etc Mar 08 2008

GI Jane is completely correct.

To gain muscle you need to eat a lot more, plus eat enough protein and do the required resistance exercise.
Maintaining Binged, what to do? Mar 08 2008
05:35 (UTC)
This is exactly what has happened to me, about 3 times in the past 3 months.

I have tried different things, trying to go back to weight loss calories for a day (worked once, not the second time), cutting back by a couple of hundred calories a day for a few days (worked once).  The third time I tried to do the above things but was unsuccessful (too hungry) so I decided to just forgive myself and move on.  One thousand calories is only about a third of a pound or less.  And everyone had been telling me I was too thin lately anyway.

But I do keep pushing the daily limit, it's annoying after having been successful for over a year.

I used calorie counting for weight loss and that's what I use for maintenance.  Except more calories allowed of course.  I do lots of exercise so I can eat more.  I did lots of muscle building when I was losing weight and have kept the muscles without maintaining the resistance program just by eating enough protein.  It seems to have worked!
Maintaining Desserts every day? Mar 08 2008

I've been maintaining for over a year and each day at 4pm I have a dark chocolate bar (55g) for 260 calories.  I also have a healthy dessert like fruit and yoghurt after dinner.

I've found I still like to eat healthily for meals - salads, meats, tuna, veges, potatoes etc but to make up 2000 calories nett I'm best not to make it all up in really low calorie food or I find I'm preparing and eating food all day which is difficult to maintain!  So I do include some healthy higher calorie snacks and some unhealthy ones too that I really look forward to and budget for in my calories.  And I don't feel guilty about as they are within my allowance.
Maintaining 4 hours sleep how many calories Mar 08 2008
05:20 (UTC)
It's been proven in studies that the amount of sleep you get directly affects the hunger you feel (it's to do with leptin and grehlin but can't remember which one does which) and the choices you make with the type of foods you eat.

Doesn't matter whether you choose to have that much sleep or not, that's the way it is.

Have you cut out coffee and all things with caffeine?

Aah, I just read you are 13 years old.  That's too young to be counting calories.

Try whatever you can to break out of the food obsession.  It's too late for me, I'm 44.

I'm the other way round.

If I stopped calorie counting and just ate healthily I would lose too much weight.  At the moment I'm on about 2300 calories a day (if I exercise) and I have to eat a fair bit of junk as well as a lot of healthy stuff too.

I find I can really enjoy all of the food and be very relaxed if I just add it all up.  I don't use this site so not sure how easy it is.  I use a wonderfully easy food and exercise diary on calorieking.com.au but it mainly has australian food.

I absolutely LOVE counting calories.

For once in my life I don't have to feel guilty for eating something that may not be ultra-healthy but is still within my calories.  If I wasn't counting I'd never be quite sure and wouldn't be able to enjoy the food so much.  Guilt was one of the driving factors for my overeating.

I'll always have an obsessive compulsive overeating disorder but at least now what I'm putting in my body isn't too much, and I'm thin!

No wonder you are bingeing as what you are trying to eat is way too low in calories - seems like only about 800 calories per day when you should be having about 2000 to maintain (could be a lot more maybe too).
Maintaining Help!!! Why am I so hungry??!! Oct 06 2007

This time around losing weight I made a huge discovery that has made all the difference to my maintenance.  I found out that every time I diet I get the symptoms of iron deficiency (had the tests this time) and I feel really really depleted and it makes me massively hungry.

So now I take iron supplements and I have energy and a normal (still too high though) appetite.

Your story sounds exactly like my own.

But because I am older I started to get really scrawny looking in the face and arms so I made myself stop losing.  But still I was secretly hoping I was losing as the tops of my legs let me down, plus I have really short legs.

I also had one of those impedance tests (body fat analysis) done and it indicated that I was below what I should be already for body fat, and a lot higher in muscle mass.  So I figured enough is enough.

I really enjoy the eating light way of life now but a lot of the extra food I allow myself now is treat food.

To be able to do this confidently and not be worried about gaining weight I still count calories.

It works better for me than eating all healthy.

The only reason I added in 100 or 200 calories a day per month was because so I could compare if I was gaining or losing or maintaining.  I can't compare one week to another of my cycle.  I can only compare the exact time each month.

I ended up being able to eat 2300 calories per day.  When I was losing I was on 1300 to 1600 per day.  So I ended up losing a lot more weight in trying to find out my ultimate calorie requirement.
