Weight Loss Guys with desk jobs looking to shed some pounds Jun 05 2008

Hi Andrew,

I have the same situation as you.  I ran track and played baseball in high school, was in great shape, and after getting a desk job after college, the pounds piled on quick.  It got to be a lifestyle that I kept for 10+ years.  I stumbled upon CC a year ago and thought I'd try it for a week to see if I liked it.  A year later and in maintenance mode, I'm still logging my meals out of habit!  Having access to a computer 24/7 doesn't hurt the logging part.

With a full-time job, graduate school, and four kids, I don't have much time for exercise either.  What I did was incorporate exercise into work that I had to do anyway.  Splitting wood, washing the cars by hand instead of taking them somewhere, parking far away so I had to walk further at work... every little bit helps!  I did P90X from DEC-FEB, but your food intake is still the driving force.  I also incorporated exercise into my FUN activities, like playing basketball with the kids, going for bicycle rides with friends, etc.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone!  There were periods where I felt like I wasn't making any progress and wanted to give up, but my friends here kept me going.  Looking back at the overall big picture, I can't even really see those times that felt like MAJOR setbacks at the time.  I'm happy to close the chapter on weight loss and I'm now gearing up to refocus my efforts on body composition.

Thanks rebepi!  You've undergone quite a transformation yourself, so congrats to you too!

I agree, although I think I was in denial that I ever got that big in the first place, with no mirrors around, I always thought I was my "normal" weight until I saw myself in pictures and didn't believe it was me!  Now it's the other way around and I still spook myself walking past a mirror sometimes!  HA!

Sign me up too!  I'd love to pick up some good tips for this stage of my journey.  Losing the weight was easy for me, making it look good is hard!  I'm 5'9" and 145lbs with a body fat calculated around 18-19% (I'm male).  I don't have any fat on my arms or legs, but my core is a soft mess.  After losing the weight I stayed locked into my calorie goals, but got lazy and took in more fat and less protein than I wanted to.  I'm refocused on where my calories are coming from and looking for the right set of exercise routines to tighten up my core to match my limbs.

1 gram of fat actually contains 9 calories.  1 gram of protein or carbs has 4 calories.

Fat = 1719 calories
Protein = 1028 calories
Carbs = 836 calories

Take into account the 55 or so calories in "other" and you have 3638 total calories.  Divide each one by this total and you'll see the same %'s that the calculator shows.  It's actually a representation of % of calorie intake and not gram intake.

I was wondering about the diet, I wasn't quite sure if I really needed to follow the diet exactly.  Thanks for the insight...

I just wrapped up week 5 and I tried to follow the diet plan, but there was no way I could realistically get 50% of my calories from protein.  I shot for 40% and I'm somewhere around 31% for the month.  The workouts seem long at first, but once you get in the groove it almost becomes a habit and they go by fast.  For weight loss, I don't know that following the diet is all that critical.  I mean, you're working out for about an hour almost every day, it's bound to make some changes!  I lost my weight on CC by diet alone and started P90X to build muscle and tone up.  Looking back I wish I would have incorporated an exercise plan while I was losing the weight.  Good luck with the program!

I too was looking for that other group of bikers!  2006 Electra Glide Classic.

My other bike is a Mongoose w/ full suspension and disc brakes (Wal-Mart special, not one of the "good" ones).  I have a friend I ride with on some awesome trails we have in Ohio.  The problem is that they're in Ohio and not an option until summer hits!  I still really enjoy going out for a ride when I can.

anyone else here on P90X. I love it I'm  into week 8 and have lost 30lbs and am stronger than I have ever been in my life

Today marks the end of week #1 for me on P90X.  It's kicking my butt, but I love it!  I lost 55 pounds here on CC and decided to start P90X to help tone and build some muscle.  I'm hoping to stay around the same weight, but to decrease my body fat %.

Good morning group!

I haven't checked in for awhile, been keeping busy and maintaining.  I was nervous for awhile because as soon as I broke 25.0 BMI, I had a 3-week plateau.  Up and down in about a 2lb range.  I was 1 pound away from my goal weight too, which added to the frustration!  It eventually came off and I've been staying under my goal for over a week now.  BMI is at 23.93 and I'm enjoying the rest of the year maintaining!  Keep up the good work everybody... there IS light at the end of the tunnel!  Hard work does pay off!

I've lost 50 pounds in 6 months almost exclusively with counting calories.  I did some exercising during the summer, but nothing on a schedule and it didn't amount to a whole lot.  I lost the weight, but it was just a smaller version of my old self.  I look great in clothes, but too flabby without.  I'm in maintenance mode this month and will be starting a serious exercise schedule in January to tone up.

Hey mabatts,

Can you give us some insight on the nutrition side of the program?  I just want to continue my flexible diet that's easy to stick to and has been super-successful for me over the past 6 months.  I fully expect to put on some weight too, so if it's as simple as adding a protein shake post-workout or something like that, I'll be golden.  If there's a highly-specific regimine to follow, I might be in trouble.

I was thinking about starting this, but I can't find any info on what the diet requirements are like?  My "Phase I" was strictly weight loss and I've lost 51 pounds in the past 6 months.  Now I'm at a healthy weight and "Phase II" starts in January where I'm going to work on toning and building muscle.  I just don't know if I can stick to a very strict diet... CC has helped me lose all this weight because there is really no diet per se, I just make healthier choices that I can live with forever.  If I can live with the diet part of the program, I'm game.

I was a software consultant at an accounting firm and had the same scenario.  The money was outstanding, but you never knew how late you would be working any given day, or when you'd be called in the middle of the night to go work on a problem.  At 4:55, you wouldn't know yet if you could leave at 5 or had to stick around till 11.  It was the uncertainty that finally sent me packing.  Now I work in-house for a former client, doing essentially the same job I did for them as a consultant, for nearly half the pay.  But I haven't worked more than a 40-hour week in 5 years!  Money isn't everything, you have to enjoy your life too and I still don't regret the decision I made.  I do miss the money though!!!

If have a BF% function on my scale.  I know it's not all that accurate, but it can give you a decent relative figure if you measure it consistently under the right conditions.  It seems to have a variation of 2% in either direction at any given time, but it measured in the high 20's when I started down to 16.5% today.  I don't formally track mine, but I do check on it every week or so just to get an idea.

Maybe somebody can chime in on the overall weight, but I believe it's fat + lean muscle mass + water + bones + organs.  AFAIK, overall weight * BF% should equal the weight of your fat only.

I'll be your plateau buddy Dacia!  I'm in the same boat right now.  I've been losing around 9 pounds per month on average, and almost halfway through November I'm not even down a full pound right now.  I'm frustrated, but not giving up.  I'm hanging out in a very small window between overweight (164 for me) and my goal of 160.  I can't seem to break 160 right now for some reason.  I was doing really well drinking plenty of water, but kinda fell off that wagon.  I'm back at it today, so we'll see if that improves my situation.  If I find something that works I'll be sure to post it, you do the same!

Thanks all!  I re-weighed myself twice this morning because I wasn't sure how I gained that weight so quick, none of the usual triggers like alcohol, but I'm keeping my eye on the ball and pretending it didn't happen while sticking to the plan as always!

Name:  Scott

BMI: 24.9 Wink

Holiday pitfall:  Cookies, mom's homemade rolls, cookies, rolls, Jack Daniels!  I was always one to lose weight over the holidays because it was about the only healthy meals I'd ever eat!  Not the usual fried crap that was the staple of my diet for the longest time.  I know this year it's gonna be hard to stay away from all the good cookies and my mom's rolls though.  They're these monster things w/ butter all over them.  I'm still eating them, I'll just pace myself!

Bonus Tip!  If you look at my weight loss trends, I've been losing LESS weight every month... pretty normal.  But in October I lost MORE than I lost even in the beginning!  How?  I completely cut out alcohol.  I enjoy my Jack with friends, but I completely cut it out to see what would happen.  Can't say I'll stick to that plan through the holidays, but it was a pretty telling experiment for me.

I hope I can retain honorary membership in the group... I'm down to 24.93!!!  I was as low as 24.57 yesterday, but something strange happened and I packed on 2.5 pounds from 1600 calories yesterday.  I started working out again and I think my body is holding onto more water.  Anyway, TUES is the day my weight officially goes in the books, so 24.93 it is!  My goal is to get in the 23-24 range by the end of the year, then start a serious workout routine in JAN.

Wow, what a tool!  As the previous posters pointed out, isn't portion control really the act of counting calories anyway???  And eating crap all day and burning it off... hmmm... sounds like counting calories in and calories out to me!  Basically he said what you're doing is correct, but being informed and tracking it is bad?

Sure, maybe there will come a day when I get so used to what I'm eating that I'll no longer have to log it, but you have to gain that knowledge from somewhere in the first place!  I've heard the same comments from people (although not my doc, she is extremely supportive!) and they've been successful, but I like the knowledge I'm gaining from this as well as the data I can look back on for motivation.

I weigh myself daily and keep the mental toughness to deal with the fluctuations!  I'm a data freak though and like to track as much info as possible, spot trends, etc.

I had a bunch of really cool shirts I bought over the past few years (XL and 2X) that no longer fit.  They look ridiculous on me now.  So now I'm starting a collection in size M!

Once you accept that it's a LIFESTYLE CHANGE and not just a temporary quick-fix, you're well on your way!  Plus if I can do it, ANYBODY can do it!!!  I started at the end of May at 209 and today I'm 165.  There have been many frustrating moments along the way, but as long as I stick to my goals I know that in the end it's working.

The best way I stayed motivated was to make my progress public, find some friends on here to chat with, and take some before pictures to compare with your progress/after pictures.  I didn't take real before pictures, so I dug up some general ones I had, but wish I had taken some where I could make a good comparison.

On my profile I have my weight chart along with monthly updates for how much I've lost, how I've eaten, etc.  It makes me accountable to somebody other than myself.  I have "buddies" on here who check it and send me motivation, which fuels further motivation.  I feel like I'm letting them down if I fail, so it keeps me going!

Weight Loss Number Snobs! Oct 19 2007

I'm a huge number snob.  I can look at my own pictures to see that I'm changing, but numbers help me to set goals and work towards accomplishing them.  I get a sense of satisfaction when I set a goal and then reach it.  I have several spreadsheets I use to track my weight, spot trends, and even validate the data that I've entered.  I guess that makes me sort of a number pimp? Cool

Seriously, there's nothing wrong with setting a tangible accomplishment as long as it's a healthy one.  My goal is 160 and I'm currently at 168.  Am I a failure because I haven't reached 160 yet?  NO!  I'm feeling really good about the progress I've made.  It's just a number that I'm working towards.

Weight Loss personalities look different with weight loss? Oct 19 2007

I think parkagirl hit the nail on the head, it's all about first impressions.  Those strangers out in public don't know anything about you, so the only thing they have to judge you on is appearance.  Confidence also plays a role, but like vklamorick, I was always pretty confident and fun-loving even when I was 240 pounds.  I looked at my own pics and I'm smiling about the same way, although I had no idea I was as big as I was in my graduation picture until I saw the pic!

It might be different for guys too.  It seems that women and their friends are more concious about their appearance.  Guys could care less about being the best-looking one in their group.  It's just a group to drink, watch sports, and burp with.  My group of friends ranges from 120 to 260 pounds and none of them act any differently towards me if I'm 240, 167, or anywhere in between.  But they already know me, which goes back to the first impressions thing.

I don't think my personality has changed one bit, I've always had a fun-loving and easy-going personality.  I haven't noticed any change with friends and family (they love you anyway, right?), but out in public I have noticed many changes!  People are holding doors open at school, I get a lot more friendly smiles at checkouts, and people in general seem to treat me much better at a normal weight than they did at an obese weight.  Maybe it's because I dress better or something too?  Who knows?  You'd like to think people wouldn't judge you soley on weight, but I'm afraid it happens a lot in our society.
Weight Loss Is it easier to lose weight when you have more of it to lose? Oct 18 2007

I think the more you have to lose the easier it is.  I started CC at 209 and was able to drop 10 pounds in a month on 2K calories a day.  Now I'm 167 and I've cut my calories to 1,600 a day but the weight is coming off at a slower pace.  The more weight you have, the more calories you burn.  Dropping my intake monthly, I'm still slowing to about a pound less of loss each month.  I'm guessing it will take me about twice as long to lose the last 10 as it did to lose the first 10.

I know what you mean pink, 5 months ago I would have never imagined I'd be under 200, let alone in the 160's!  I had been over 200 for over 10 years straight.  It's good motivation to see long-term differences in yourself to prove that the numbers on the scale are actually converting into something visual.  It's like 10 years of bad habits have been corrected in 4-5 short months!

Great work!  When you see yourself in the mirror every day, it's hard to notice the difference.  Then you step back and look at the change over several months and it's WOW!  I wish I would have taken "before" pics, but I didn't really think of it at the time.

I just put up a before/current set yesterday and am amazed at the difference.

Is everybody gearing up for mid-terms?  I have a monster one tonight, and hopefully a much easier one next week.

I should have clarified my fast food comment.  If I'm at home and hungry, I'll almost always make something.  But at work I'll go grab something for lunch every day and we'll usually get take-out once on the weekends for dinner.  I can't stand hanging around my office during lunch, I need to get out for my mental health!  I'm strange, but glad that I don't like cheese or mayo, so those aren't even options.  I guess I feel like I'm getting away with something because I'm getting 5 lunches per week from a drive-thru, gas station, or bar!  Granted, it's usually some variation of grilled chicken, but still.  I guess that's the beauty of CC, there's no set menu, just pick what works for you.
