I'm right with you too. It's true that I work a ton and feel perpetually stressed, but today wasn't like that. Work was low-stress and I was home by 5:30. Plenty of time to exercise and cook dinner. But no. I've been watching junk tv and have eaten the weirdest combination of crap food. I decided that since I have no motivation for anything big, I'm only going to commit to very small goals. I wrote on an index card what I'm going to eat tomorrow. Not a meal plan for the week, not a big promise to get back on track, just a promise that I'll eat the things that I wrote down on that one card. I'll cross each thing off as I go and then throw it away at the end of the day. It's just one day. I can handle that. Then maybe I'll try and plan for just one more day after that. And then maybe another. Fingers crossed. |

You can search online and find lots of recipes for shiratake noodles. My friend made this shiratake bake for me a few weeks ago, and it was really great - http://www.house-foods.com/yummy_recipes/reci pe_pages/tofu_shirataki_spinach.html. I cook for me and my boyfriend, so when I make him spaghetti, I'll make myself shiratake with gimme lean fake meat and marinara sauce so that I can eat *pasta* too. It's great - and a huge serving for under 200 calories. |

I'm stuck too. I've been perfect for 16 days straight, and no weight loss at all. I was doing really badly before, so I expected it to take a little while for my body to believe that I am eating healthy and exercising regularly, but it's still frustrating not to see a change. Oh, well, keep chugging along. Good luck ladies! |

| Fitness | Best gym for weightlifting? | Apr 03 2008 23:42 (UTC) |

For me, the best gym is the one closest to my house. Convenience greatly increases compliance. But it sounds like that's not really your problem. I agree, you should take a tour and don't ever trust the websites. A lot of gyms are huge corporations and the websites only describe what their *typical* locations offer. Those typical locations tend to be the newest and nicest, so they aren't particularly representative. |

I'm on board too. I'm going to Puerto Rico in late May and I don't want my food baby hanging out over my bathing suit. I'm 4'11" and weigh 115 I'd love to be 105, but I'll take 108 As for managing hunger - I eat a lot of fresh vegetables. I try and always have cut up bell peppers (yellow are my favorite) and other fresh vegetables on hand. It makes me feel like I'm eating a lot, even though it's only a few calories. But, you're right, it's real easy to get to 1300 calories without really eating all that much. Most single restaurant meals have more calories than my daily allowance. I often have catered work lunches that I have to attend where even the *healthy* options are sandwiches on huge pieces of bread with tons of mayo and salads with creamy dressing. I generally just eat the turkey out of the sandwiches and undressed lettuce, but that's not real appealing either. It's tough. |

First, I agree with lk1234. Second, ever since I can remember - like 8 years old - I've thought that if people see me eat they'll think "OH! She eats food, that's why she's so fat! If she weren't so glutonous she would be thin!" Regardless of whether or not I may or may not have been fat, or what I may have been eating. I never over-eat in front of people. I identify these feelings as the beginning of my ED. |

I agree with kelsmi01. I find that it's impossible for people who are not professionals or current/former bingers to understand that there have been times when I literally cannot stop eating. That I can eat thousands of calories worth of food that I don't even like the taste of. That said, I do think friends should be good listeners and be supportive, even if they can't totally understand how you're feeling. I'm sorry your roommate wasn't like that. My boyfriend can't understand at all how it could be possible for someone not to be able to stop themselves from doing something that they don't want to do, but he still listens to me talk about it whenever I want. |

People with eating disorders don't usually just stick to one type of disordered eating. Recovery means working on all the emotional issues that caused you to develop anorexia in the first place. Until those issues are resolved, you'll probably continue to use food as a coping mechanism. Whether that be starving yourself, making yourself throw-up or bingeing. In many ways, it's all kind of the same. That said, you should be REALLY proud of yourself from moving away from anorexia! That is a huge accomplishment. And knowing that you did that, you can feel confident that you'll move away from the bingeing too. It's been 1 year and 3 months since I last made myself throw-up, but I still struggle with bingeing. The periods of bingeing are less often and less severe now than they were when I first started recoving from bulimia. I hate that I still struggle with binges, but I'm so glad that I no longer make myself purge. I know that if I keep working on the emotional stuff, the bingeing will become more and more rare and maybe one day will be gone forever. Until then, I just try and appreciate the progress that I know that I've already made. Good luck! |

I'm no doctor, but that sounds way too high. My nutritionist says that people trying to lose weight in a healthy way should aim to lose 1 pound a week, which means that you should have a deficit of 3,500 calories for the week. |

What confuses me is that 8 oz of nonfat milk generally has 90 calories in it, which would mean that 12 oz of nonfat milk has 135 calories. I know that the shot of espresso accounts for a few ounces, but not 4 ounces (unless it's way over-extracted). And the foam reduces the overall milk content a little, but not by much. So how can it really only have 90 calories? Calorie count says it's 126, which seems more accurate to me. |

Club Waizema on Divisidero is supposed to be really good. And there's a place on Valencia by Modern Times bookstore that's really good. Anyway, I've always thought that Ethiopian food is a lot like Indian food in the sense that they use a lot of oil in all of the dishes. Vegetarian or not. And becuase you eat with the bread instead of a fork, you're eating a handful of bread with every bite. It is delicious though. So is Indian food. I haven't had either in years. It's sad to be so freaked out by calories that you won't eat anything good. |

I can't even imagine having a normal relationship with food. I feel like I wake up each morning and get ready to go off to war. It's the first thing I think about - how am I going to handle this today? Although many of us haven't found it yet, I do think it's possible to one day have a healthy relationship with food. I feel like I have wasted so much mental energy on keeping track of what I ate and how many calories it has in it. I could have cured cancer had I put the same mental energy towards that. Such a waste of our lives. |

Ugh. It's so familiar. I haven't found a way to deal with this completely for myself either, but I am starting to recognize things that make it better or worse. I've noticed that sleep makes a big difference. I'm able to regulate my moods and my binging much more when I'm getting enough sleep. And staying on a routine. If I can keep myself on a regular schedule that is consistent and reliable, then I do better. Exercising regularly helps a lot too. All that said, I encourage you to talk to someone. Therapy has been a big help, even if I'm not "cured" yet. I also have read lots of self-helpy type books and I keep a good journal. The journal has helped me recognize patterns that trigger certain behaviors. Out of all the books I've read, some are great and helpful and some are annoying and completely out of touch, but they all force me to be more aware of myself and what I'm dealing with. Which is a big part of it. You should feel really proud of yourself that you recognize what's going on and want to do something to make it better. Good luck. |

I can run with friends forever, but can only run alone for a few miles before I give up. I've coordinated a few different groups of running friends so I meet people at least 4 days a week to run with. Do you have friends who would want to run with you on a regular schedule? Most cities have running groups too - maybe you could find a running group in your area. Sometimes local running stores sponsor running groups too. |

I definitely think you could have gained a pound of muscle in the last week and a half. Especially if you have just been doing weights and no cardio. Weight training is really important for overall weight loss, toning and bone health, but if you are looking to lose weight you should incorporate some cardio in your workout routine too. Good luck! |

I agree completely with the other two posts. You'll be an amazing role model to your family if you take care of yourself. It's the best thing that you can do for them and for you. And federal law protects employees who need to take time off for medical reasons, so your work can't penalize you for needing to be out for a while. Until you're ready to go in for in-patient care (which I encourage you to do, particularly considering that you have been advised by experts to do so), have you looked for support groups in the area? In my area there are several Eating Disorders Anonymous support groups and Kaiser (our local big HMO hospital chain) has several eating disorder specific classes. Also, you should at least be able to find a therapist in your area that specializes in eating disorders. I found my therapist by doing a google search for the name of my city and therapist and eating disorder. Granted, I live in a big city, but a ton of names came up. Eating disorders are so pervasive that wherever you live there will be someone with experience with Anorexia. There are also lots of great books that you could read. I recently read Caroline Knapp's book, Appetites: Why Women Want. It's about the author's struggle with Anorexia. It was incredibly emotional to read, but did give me a lot of insight into a struggle that I have, well into my 30's. |

You sound like you have such a great and healthy outlook on this!. It's inspiring and encouraging, thank you. I agree with singing girl - keep eating healthy and exercising, and stay at 150. Those BMI calculators are just estimates based on the average person. I bet that if you had your BMI calculated by a doctor you'd probably find that 150 is in a healthy range for you. If you're happy and healthy at 150, that sounds perfect to me. And I'm sure you look totally awesome. |

I always ask for fresh tofu and steamed vegetables, with no oil or sauce, and it's never a problem. Soy sauce has no calories, so I use that for seasoning. Chinese restaurants are one of the easier places to be sure that you're getting a low calorie, healthy dinner when you go out. |

| Nordstrom's are starting to have really great bra selections and professional fitters. A well fitting bra is so amazing! It makes you have better posture, look perkier and look thinner. Seriously, the most important thing I wear. The problem with Victoria's Secret is that they don't have a wide range of sizes, so instead of telling you that they don't carry your size bra, they convince you to buy something that doesn't really fit. I wear a 28 around with a pretty big cup size, but since 34 is the smallest they have in the larger cup sizes, they always try and convince me that it will fit fine. It's a 6 inch difference - of course they don't fit! |

| Weight Loss | What is a binge really? No seriously I'm asking... | Jun 15 2007 22:21 (UTC) |

| Like a few people have said, it clearly means something different for everyone. For me, it's an uncontrollable need to eat anything that I can get my hands on. Normally, it's not even food that I like the taste of. Although I can't usually taste what I'm eating anyway. It's been my coping mechanism for a long time. It's how I avoid dealing with difficult emotions. I've had many instances where I've stood outside a convenience store in tears trying to convince myself not to go in and not to buy anything. I know that I don't want to eat. I know that I'll regret it, and that I'll feel full and disgusting and weak when I'm done; like a complete failure in life. I've also had many instances of throwing food in the trash to try and keep myself from eating it, only to end up eating it out of the trashcan. The compulsion and need to eat in those moments is stronger than any rational thoughts that I have. For most of the years that I've struggled with this, I've also made myself purge most of the food that I had eaten. So far in the last 5 months, however, I've managed to keep myself from purging, but the fear of bingeing is always present. I hate food. I am terrified of food. But I also understand that food is nurturing and wholesome. It is literally what keeps us alive. I'm trying to figure out a way to live peacefully with food, instead of using it as a weapon to punish myself for everything I think I've done wrong in life. |

| Foods | Japanese Dinner Outting HELP ME!!! | Jun 14 2007 20:07 (UTC) |

| Like others have already said, tempura is battered and deep fried, teryaki sauce has a lot of sugar in it, so it's really high in calories. I don't usually order noodle dishes at Japanese restaurants because the noodles tend to be pretty high in calories, and the servings are usually big. If you don't want to eat raw fish, don't order anything called sashimi. I don't know what the onion soup will be like, but the miso is definitely low in calories, so I'd stick with that. It looks like the hibachi dishes will be cooked right in front of you at the table, so you could order the salmon or the vegetables and just ask them not to use any oil. Generally, they'll ladle a bunch of oil onto the grill to cook whatever was ordered, but you can ask them not to do that. Miso soup and edamame are great options. (if you've never eaten edamame before, they are soybeans. they look like peas in the pod, kind of. you just eat the beans inside the pod, you don't eat the pod. although i don't see them on the menu, which is odd for a japanese restaurant.) I would probably order: the seaweed salad appetizer miso soup cucumber roll I know what you mean when you say it's embarrassing to order side dishes and appetizers instead of full meals, but you deserve to eat exactly what you want and it's no one else's business. Besides, you can always say that since you're new to Japanese food, you'd rather sample several little things! My nutritionist and I spend a lot of time talking about why I shouldn't be embarrassed or shy to ask restaurants to make some accomodations for me. As long as you ask nicely, they're always happy to do it. It's my own shame and guilt about eating that causes me to be shy and not ask for what I want, which is no good at all! None of us should be ashamed to eat, or to ask for exactly what we want (nicely, of course). Have fun! |

| Congratulations! I'm sure that your wedding will be wonderful. I don't have a specific meal plan to suggest, but I do recommend starting to educate yourself about food and nutrition. Start reading labels and being more aware of the nutritional content in the things that you eat. That's helped me become a lot more aware of what i eat and how much I eat. It's also helped me figure out healthier alternatives to things that I was eating. Good luck! |
