Welcome to the group lam, and it's great to hear from you again mavmom! Kathryn it's true how not drinking enough makes you feel bad. I have a water bottle at my desk and I try to refill it a couple of times a day. It's stainless steel so I don't get the chemicals from the plastics. I'm down another bit from last week - slowly but surely wins the race, as they say. I did some weight training on Wed, mostly legs, and I'm still pretty sore which means I need to do that more often! Terry - 184lbs - No change Kathryn ~ 200 - Up 2.5 Cynthia - 176.4 - down 0.6 |

That's a great shot, Terry. You really can see your success in your face; your cheekbones are much more visible than in your earlier shots. |

Terry I can understand your logic in wanting to skip those meals, but still :) That's great, though, that you were out helping at the food shelter. I'm plugging away, slowly raising my speed on the elliptical (then I'll raise the resistance). My husband, who does the cooking, has been doing more stir-frys which we both enjoy, but last night we tried a new rice noodle that didn't turn out well, tasteless and gooey. He also made a beef barley soup which we'll have with friends tonight. Terry - 184 (down 1) Cynthia - 177.0 (down 0.4) |

Still off work this week, but I've been catching up on work-related reading. I missed my workout yesterday, but we've been frantically cleaning the apartment for house guests this weekend; hopefully that counts for something. I was very good at lunch today. We went for burgers, and I only ate half of my serving (which is hard for me to do with a burger!) and will have the rest for supper tonight. Congrats Sandy, it has been a long haul but you're getting there! Simone, I agree that it can be really frustrating, and it seems like nothing's happening, but eating healthier really does have long-term effects. I usually go down half a pound, then up a bit, then down, so I completely understand about the scale not doing what you want it to. Just keep at it and know that you're not alone! I didn't check in last week because I got laid off last Thursday, and Friday I did weigh myself but I was running around trying to figure out what I'd do so didn't post. They said it was temporary, but I still have to look out for myself, and I've got a short-term contract lined up at this point. If they call me back, that'll be great. On the bright side, my weight hasn't changed much even though I missed two exercise sessions. Sandy - 146.4 (-1.6) Terry - 185 (same) Cynthia - 179.6 (down 0.4) |

It's Friday again; hope everyone had a great week! Last weekend was our Thanksgiving north of the border, and I think I did pretty well in terms of limiting myself. I also was down over 4 the week before, so I'm not surprised to see a bit of a rebound, so you're not the only one doing a bit of a roller coaster Kathryn. It's been a good week for me. I'm working on the elliptical now, and I'm pretty sure it'll be spring before I'll run outside again. I've started doing some interval work instead of just doing steady state, and it kicks up my pulse more than the steady state work. Terry – 186 – No change Kathryn ~ 197.5 - Down .5 Cynthia - 180.0 - up 1.6 |

It has been quiet recently. I also hope everyone's OK. I didn't exercise this week because of a cold; I also missed a day and a half of work. I'm pretty much over it at this point though. It's the long weekend this weekend :) We're going to a friend's cottage for a weekend of board games and card games (no tv there), and I can't wait. The only thing is it's hunting season up there, which can be a bit scary with the occasional gun going off in the distance. Sandy I hope your lungs get better. The fall often has a lot of mold with the rain and dead leaves, which can trigger some people. Sounds like you'll have fun with the grandkids though! Terry I hope your MRI went well and they can do something for your wrist. Terry - 186 Sandy - 152 Cynthia - 178.4 (down 4.2! must be the cold) |

Happy Friday to everyone! Good to hear Terry that riding shouldn't damage it further, I know how much you enjoy that. This week I've been feeling a little bloated, so I'm not surprised to be up a bit. I had a good long run at the decreases, though, and one week isn't going to set me back much in the grand scheme of things. I should be back to normal next week. I've been working out on the elliptical because of rain this week. It's been cold and rainy, and last night there was a frost warning, brrr! Terry – 186 – no change Cynthia - 182.6 - up 1.6 |

Congrats to both of you! Terry, wearing a 32 pant is fantastic. Hopefully that will improve your mood; I know how frustrating it is being stuck working inside when you'd rather be outside. And Kathryn, congrats on getting below 200! I know I felt really good when I hit that milestone. |

Friday again :) We have a birthday dinner for a longtime friend tonight at a Thai place, which is reasonably healthy if I can avoid the coconut milk in the sauces. I've been running on the elliptical indoors because one of my knees has been complaining, but hopefully the rest will have me running outside again soon. Hope everyone had a good week! Sandy - 152 same....well at least I am not gaining! Cynthia - 181 - down 0.4 |

I was giving myself 90 minutes, and I finished in around 83, so I'm happy. I did have to walk for a bit, but I knew that would happen, so I planned for a bit of a walk every 10min or so. Considering I'd only been training at around 40-45 minute runs and this was double that, I'm pleased. I was one of the slower runners of the initial crowd, but there were a bunch of walkers and walk-runners behind me. The Terry Fox run is non-competitive, so there's no official time to go by, and people start it at various times. I'm just going by my husband's cell phone time for the finish (he didn't check at the start but the kick-off was at 9AM). There were a couple of guys up ahead that finished ahead of some of the cyclists - one guy in particular was just zooming along. Ah well, someday. I know more or less what I need to do to increase my speed (intervals some days, steady runs other days), I just need to do it :) |

Hooray for Friday! Kathryn I've been going up and down, and sometimes the weight gained or lost seems to have no relationship to how you think it should go. All we can do is keep going and tell ourselves that we're healthier :) I had a sore knee this week after the 10k run on Sunday so I didn't run Tuesday or Thursday to give it a bit of a break. The run itself went well - slow but steady. I'm very pleased - that was the first 10k I'd run since university. Now I'll just have to do that more often :) Terry - 187 (down 2) Kathryn ~ 201.5 (Up 1) Cynthia - 181.4 (down 1.6) |

I'm glad to hear that your accident wasn't serious Terry. Have you checked over the helmet that you were wearing to make sure it wasn't damaged? Alicia I'm interested as well to see how your husband is doing. Even small improvements can really help him. Sandy, hope your granddaughter gets better soon. It's hard when you can't explain anything to her. And it's Friday, hooray! Sandy - 152 Cynthia - 183.0 (down 1.0) |

Hooray for Friday! It's a long weekend here in Canada :) Great to hear that your asthma is better Sandy, and I agree that we're doing ourselves good. It's been lovely weather here, sunny and low 20's (low 70's). I skipped Tuesday's run because my knee was sore, but other than that it's been a great week. Hope everyone is doing well, and have a great weekend! Sandy - 152 (up 2) Cynthia - 184.0 (down 1.4) |

This was a really good week for me - nice and sunny but still cool enough to exercise. My husband made a really good spaghetti sauce last night (he's the cook) which we'll take to a get-together tonight. My charity run is two weeks from Sunday; I really hope the weather is good and that I'm able to do it without problems. Hope everyone had a great week! Cynthia - 185.4 (down 1.2) |

Hope you feel better Sandy, sorry to hear about your migraine. Terry I've also read that muscle is more dense than fat, so it makes sense that your clothing sizes are shrinking while you're doing that much exercise. My weight has been bouncing around all week. I had to run inside on the elliptical both Tuesday and Thursday because of the weather, but I got good workouts in both times. The end result is that I'm up a bit compared to three weeks ago, but I'm happy that it isn't more. Sandy – I owe you 1 weigh in Terry – 190 (-1) Kathryn - 204 ~ down 2 Cynthia - 186.6 (up 0.6) |

Back from vacation! I had a wonderful, relaxing break. I didn't run, but I did go for a decent walk almost every day. I'm glad that I stayed about the same, maybe even down a little, weight-wise. My mother, who we stayed with, is a big health food nut, so eating well was not difficult. Terry I agree that you may be undereating. It may be worth seeing if your GP can recommend a professional nutritionist to see what you should be eating, and bringing the nutritionist a printout of a week or so worth of food and exercise records. I don't know what the certification requirements for nutritionists are in the U.S. (maybe it differs by state?) but you should be able to find someone reputable. |

Happy Birthday Terry :) Even though you overate, it's still only once a year, and you can work it off. I'm heading out on Wednesday to visit my mother, so I'll most likely be offline for a week and a half. I'll try to keep tabs on my weight, and I'll bring my running shoes etc. with me. |

Hugs to Alicia, I hope your husband recovers quickly. I had a good week overall. I finished my 8 week training program for 5k runs last night, and I'm very pleased that I stuck to it. Now comes the hard part, for me at least - maintaining that level of commitment. Next week we head down to the East coast to visit my mother for a week and a half, so I won't be able to check in for the next two Fridays. I'll bring my running shoes and try to keep up with the runs, though. Terry - 190 - no change. Cynthia - 186.0 - down 0.2 |

I understand completely about the motivation. I've been hovering around the same five pounds for months. What keeps me going is the 5k race in the spring, and the Terry Fox cancer run in the fall (coming up in September). I know I have to be in shape for them, or I'll disappoint not only myself but the people who pledged their support. Is there a charity fund raiser or race that you could compete in to see how you do? I find it very satisfying to compare my times from one year to the next and see how far I've come. Another suggestion might be to try triathlons. They have some really short ones for beginners, depending on where you are. I'm a terrible swimmer so I haven't done that yet, but it's something I've considered. |

Sandy, sorry to hear that you're so frustrated. I know exactly what you mean, though, when I look at my weight chart it looks like a zig-zag around the same 5lbs. Hopefully the weights will help; don't be afraid to lift heavier weights, because it takes a LOT of work and a specific diet for a woman to look over-muscled. A really good book that a friend of mine recommends is "New Rules of Lifting for Women"; she looks healthy but you can't see muscle lines or anything. I've read it but I haven't done the workouts yet. I've lost almost all of what I gained on that weekend a couple of weeks ago, yay! I've been good except for a piece of chocolate cake Wed. night, but I need a treat once in a while or I'd go crazy. My sweet tooth is my big failing. Cynthia - 186.8 - down 2.4 |

I'll start off today. I had a pretty good week, except that I missed my run on Tuesday because it was pouring rain outside and I was feeling headachey anyways. I'm down half of what I gained over the cottage weekend, so you guys are probably right and it's just fluid retention or whatever. Alicia I was thinking last night about your husband. I really hope they're able to treat his head injury and he doesn't have loss of function in his elbow. Cynthia - 189.2 - down 3.2 |

I'm really sorry to hear that Alicia, especially the head trauma with memory issues. I hope he recovers quickly. I can totally understand spending all your time at the hospital and eating the cafeteria food there. I don't know what else to say except he's in my thoughts. |

I know what you guys mean about body image. I see myself as much heavier than I am; I get "fat days" fairly often. Well, I went away for the weekend and *bam* 9 lbs at the start of the week. I've since dropped 3 of that, but 6 pounds up from last week is still very discouraging, especially since there's no way I ate 3500 extra calories x 6 in four days (Friday through Monday). It's been cool with showers here, so I've been getting in my runs at least, in between the showers. If nothing else I'm getting in better shape, but I really would like to see downward movement on the scale without the sudden jumps upwards :( Alicia~ 243 Cynthia - 192.4 (up 6.0) |
