Thanks amethystgirl - I find the 'activity level' on the tools to be tough to figure out since I don't fit in any of the categories.  So this helps.  Thanks!

I had the SAME question.  I'm not sure what a good deficit is - 500 calories, 800, 1000, 300?  I'd love to know.  Too bad the tool doesn't break it down for you. Or if it does I can't figure it out.

Weight Loss How to estimate exactly how many calories if you workout alot? Oct 14 2009

Thanks ..... I just find it tough to know what is a healthy deficit?  Is it 500 calories a day - 1000?  800?  Does anyone have an idea?

I confess that I'm a weight watcher member - and my head is spinning from points and activity points and eating all of them. I would like to count calories for a week and see if its a bit easier for me to figure out.  But I'm not sure ... when I burn 500 or 800 calories in a workout - how many calories should I try to consume that day?

Yea ... thanks so much everyone ... I really appreciate your responses. Its got me totally excited for my lessons tomorrow night!!!

I read all these studies that for weight loss its not the best exercise to do - but I'm fairly limited in what I can do - just bike - so I'm just really happy to have something new to do and something new to learn.

I have read about the appetite issues and I'm not sure exactly how I'll combat it except that my lessons will be out at 8pm and I think if I'm super aware of that being the biggest issues I'll try to really watch what I eat. I've also read that if you take a hot bath when you are done that helps with the appetite.

THANKS EVERYONE!

Thanks tamji - glad others understand - I was trying to figure out if its just part of my nature and lack of confidence (a problem I've had all my life) but really it is only related to my weight ... I'm so hard on myself in terms of my fat rolls, the way I dress, the fat on my legs etc. - but I see women much heavier than me that I would never call 'fat' or think poorly of. And in terms of where I am in my career and other other accomplishments I'm okay - just my weight.

Argh so frustrating.

But I appreciate hearing from people - it helps me feel not so alone.

ltp - I did read this and its great and I should really keep it and re-read it regularly - thanks for reminding me!

Thanks so much DKN - I really appreciate it! You know, I could be doing more - I could be working out more - I could be eating a bit better - I'm staying within my calorie range but I'm not eating as well as I should. I'm not drinking as much water as I should. I was thinking I might try starting south beach again tomorrow - and try to take working out one day @ a time.

I think my rant was more about being so insanely disappointed in myself - disappointed in every way. If I saw someone that looked like me walking down the street I would NEVER think the same things about them as I do about myself. All I see is bad - fat - ugly etc. And its so destructive.

I MUST have my sweet treat once a day - for me its usually a Smart One's Double Chocolate Cake because its better than ANY desert I could have the the little portions help me - but its high in cals - I think up around 200. But I always work it in. BTW - I had a snickers bar a few weeks ago (something I never let myself do) that had almonds and it was only 200 cals.

Anyway ... I think you have to let yourself have treats if you need them. As for work - I'm the heaviest person in my office - everyone here is thin - they eat poorly all the time - when they do bring pastries or cookies etc. I just ignore them - don't let myself even have one or I'll have 10. But it is hard!

Okay ... its so good to read this - I suppose I really needed a reminder to get my water in. I'm lazy about it ... now I need to go and calculate how many cups in a liter. LOL!

THANKS so much guys - maybe its a reason my scale won't budge - I just refilled my glass and will drink away!

Thanks for the welcome - sandlady - I eat fish and dairy so I'm not really a veggie - but no red meat, poultry, pork etc. just fish and dairy. I should really revisit doing SB - it was a great plan for me and I loved being on it.

THanks for the links I'll check them out. I have the book @ home too. I also found a SB site that lists how to do it if your a vegetarian.

Thanks for the inspiration!

I did South Beach a few years ago and loved it - only lost 10 pounds but still loved it!

Trying to find the food list ... but how do vegetarians do south beach? I wasn't one back then but I am now and would struggle, I think? Also - you're allowed multi-grain bread in Phase 2 aren't you?

Thanks guys I'll look thru it - so my question is - will I lose fat regardless of whether I'm burning fat or not burning fat - I guess I know the answer to that .......... the whole thing is a bit confusing to me - I'll read about it in the thread.

But it sounds like you're saying - go ahead and push yourself - I'm still burning calories?

Thanks everyone for your support - I do focus on feeling healthy and better but like everyone else I also want my body to feel different. I think that was really my question - is it physically possible to lose the rolls and layers of fat. You see it in magazines etc. but I just can't imagine them being gone. LOL!

Thanks!

Recently I've been into this Izze Sparkling Pomegranate Juice - its 120/bottle - has 26 g of sugar (not sure if that is good or bad) - and I LOVE IT! I agree it ads up but for me its a great treat and I let myself have one every day or one every other day. I've never really been into juice so its nice. And these are great because they mix with sparkling water and claim to not include refined sugar or any artificial anything.
Weight Loss Anyone lost weight SPINNING? Aug 07 2007

I adore spinning - so much so that I bought a spin bike for home. The one thing about spinning is that if you're taking an hour class you're burning somewhere up around 600 calories. I'd just make sure that you're careful to eat enough AND ... it might be good for you to try varying it a bit. When I was spinning 4-5 days a week and not losing I spoke with a trainer at the gym who suggested cutting back a bit and doing 2 days spin and 2 days other cardio equipment (I'm limited to biking or maybe stairmaster thanks to a bumm ankle).

I would definatley not give up spinning but rather cut back on the classses and add another exercise - maybe running/walking/strength training etc. it will help shock your system!

Good luck!

Congrats everyone - sounds like you've had great success on it. I toyed with the idea but wasn't quite ready to spend the money and take the plunge. I might @ somepoint.

I think many of us have felt hopeless and frustrated so if there is a pill out there that can help you get over a hump then go for it. Especially if your careful and its healthy!!!
Weight Loss Struggle with Diet Coke Aug 06 2007

DD - I'm a HUGE HUGE DC addict. For several years I've had a large DC from McDs (yes, I CAN go to McDs and only get a DC) - that's 32 ounces of DC a day. But I really finally realized that its just not possible to lose weight and drink it.

For right now - since I've been doing HORRIBLE on my diet and not working out I've allowed it again - but tomorrow I'm back on and off the drug. Honestly ... its horribly addictive. When I'm on my track eating well I let myself have one a week - and that becomes something I look forward to. I also ahve Poland Spring Sparking water with lemon - that helps - and find that after a week or two of going cold turkey you get used to it. I think you have to get to a point where you just think of it as something you just cannot have.

Hey - there's a reason its called 'coke' - LOL!
Weight Loss Abs Diet anyone? Aug 05 2007
23:16 (UTC)

I have it ... the Abs Diet is just like South Beach 2nd Phase - WW Core - they all focus on the same stuff - lean meats, veggies, fruits - no processed foods etc.

I think its a good plan - they all are. The Abs part is about kicking sugar out of your diet to shrink your belly. I tried doing it and sometimes go back to it - but never had any luck with it. Although, I've never really had much success with any diet. LOL!

Wow - thanks everyone - great feedback. I'm totally intimidated by the entire process. I'm new to my bike (I don't even have a helmet) - I think it would be great for me but I am intimidated by the fundraising, training, yikes! I think I will really try to make an info session.

Oh ... totally different than what I thought - so you raise the money for the society but you also raise money to travel to the ride/events! That actually sounds awesome because I was wondering how the heck I could do a ride if there was nothing in my area - and there doesn't seem to be. I'm also finding it tough to find rides not walk/run events. I can't walk/run and can only ride for exercise so I'm a little discouraged that there aren't more bike events.

Trisha - No bashing here either - I think if you or rather anyone wants to take pills to help them with their weight loss that's their decision and no one should bash them for it. Some on this site tend to get very negative about the idea of pills etc. - but I can relate to wanting or needing the help so much that you'll do what you can. I think it sounds great that its working for you - everything works differently for everyone - so congrats that you've found something to help you out. If you don't mind me writing - you sound a bit defensive about taking it and I don't think you should be! You look AWESOME and have clearly come a long long way in your efforts to get healthy! Whatever you're doing is working! So celebrate! Totally inspiring!!

Thanks guys - I've heard that the fundraising is really tough and I'm not flush enough to contribute my own money. Don't get how it works really - you raise money while you train, right - not for the actual event??
Weight Loss ??? Re: Working out and Calorie Allowance for the Day? Aug 02 2007
22:23 (UTC)
Really? Yea - I guess that's my question - I know on WW that you earn activity points and some people use them and some people don't. I always did because for a long time I didn't use them and I was working out quite a bit (then) and not losing weight - as soon as I started eating my activity points (ie. calories) I started losing.

So funny because I was just starting my slimfast this week ... I like the chocolate drinks - I find that they do fill me up and I love to have something super chocolatey during the day ... Today I decided to give the shake for bfast, shake for lunch a try and by 12pm I was SO HUNGRY I got myself a garden salad with a little bit of dressing.

Honestly I think it is good for a meal replacement every once and a while - but doing their plan - very tough and not maintainable.

I have the set - and have done it many times. I started doing it several times a week and felt like either I was doing it totally wrong or I was so out of shape nothing would make a dent. I never felt anything - no muscle soreness - no muscle anything. The 20-minute program is super easy to do in that it goes by very fast - her comments are really cheesy - but I just never felt as though I was doing it 'right' enough to make a difference compared to other classes I've taken where I did feel it right away.

Not sure what I was doing wrong - probably too impatient!
