My own personal recommendation would be a book by a lady named 'Judith Wills' and it's called 'The Food Bible". Have a look on Amazon and see what you think, but it is the best book I can think of for fad-free, food education, with soundproof, healthful tips on weight loss. Hope this helps. J |

Original Post by amberleigh7: And that my love is possibly a.) why you binged and b.) why you will find yourself in this viscious circle for a while to come! STEPHH11 - To the OP. Try not to let a lapse become a collapse. Okay, so you ate more than you were happy with today but you cannot 'un-eat' it. And as tempting and reassuring it can be to do something like restrict for a few days, it will only end up being counterproductive by setting you up for another fall in terms of being far more susceptable to bingeing. I agree with another suggestion of remembering how you felt at this time. It may be useful to keep a journal and if / when this happens, channel those horrible feelings or guilt, shame etc on pen to paper as opposed to channeling them right back at your poor self! Re-inforce possitive beliefs - instead of dwelling of 'feeling gross / sick ' etc, think rationally. 'Okay, I ate more than I would have liked and cannot undo it, but I can reflect on it and try implementing strategies to avoid / control the situation in future. ' And lastly, you are most defiantely not alone - I am sure most of the women on her can sympathise with how you are feeling right now - we've all been there! jx |

Firstly, your evening snack wasn't completely in vain - God you made me laugh, you have quite a skill for witty writing! Anyway, like yourself, I am trying to lose 25lbs and alos, I too am a night owl and have found an innocent ' bedtime bite ' turning into complete calorie carnage! I'd love to hop aboard this one as you aims, goals ( and traits! ) seem very similar to mine! I have just stepped on the scales - 61.5kg! Gah! I have avoided them for a while for this exact reason! I'm aiming for 50-52kg, as I am only 5'3" with a tiny frame So yes, count me aboard too cap'n! J x

I am happy to have helped - at least my babbling was not in vain!!! I am completely with you on journalling being a great way or ' purging ' thoughts. It is one of those old clicke things people say and you roll your eyes at - but it really does help!!!!!! And like yourself, I am always the one my friends come to health and fitness advice too! I think it is probably more common than we realise though - not trusting ones own advice! Anyway, I am glad my response helped. Anytime you need a chat, you know where I am! J x |

Hi. In relation to the answer from your question, I do not think there is a straight yes or no answer for that. People 'binge' or use food for different reasons. Whether or not they are able to overcome the reasons behind it long-term, I think depends on whether or not it is likely to be a problem again. One thing I did notice about your post though, is somthing that is not dissimilar to myself. I tend to binge now and again when I am on my own. This seems what has happened in your case. I used to have a tendency to fill 'empty' evenings with food. Instead of beating yourself up and getting cross about it - reflect on it. What could you have done differently? Maybe write down exactly how you felt afterwards and keep it someplace safe for when / if a future binge begins to strike. If this were someone elses post, how would you have chosen to respond? What would your thoughts have been? Sometimes I find this strategy oddly helpful - I seem to be vary good at advice and rational thinking when it comes to the situations of other, but very naive in helping myself, when I could probably see my own flaws if only I would give myelf the benefit of the doubt! The one thing I think you should do is draw a line and get back on track, to feel you have forgiven a minor blip and have a clear outlook to continue. --------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- ----- There! I've drawn it for you! Please don't worry too much about it - worrying and fixating on it, in my experience, only magnifies it and makes you feel worse. "If you worry you die. If you don't worry you die anyway. So why worry"?! My Mum always tells me that when I get down about stuff - and it's true. No amount of worrying makes stuff better. You've mention it as being an 'old' habit, so you've tackled it before, so a minor blip is merely a speck on the horizon. Sorry, this was longer than I inteneded - I have tendencies too - to babble on and talk too much! |

yummy_kitty: You just summed my weekend up perfectly - I couldn't have put it better myself ( although I am unfamiliar with 'midol' so I shall just edit that with ' cereal'! ) Like yourself, there is only one reason I find myself compelled to exercie also - funny how 'overconsumption' ( I prefer that term to ' binge' lol ) can drive us to move our butts eh?! So I am now going to make a concerted effort to get my butt into gear and do some form of proper exercise ( so yes, that means walking a little further than to the local Tesco for milk! ) three times a week. And one more thing - you are not alone! My stomach never got that memo either?!?! Maybe the people in that particular memo department were laid off in the current recession we have going on over here lol! J x |

Hi everyone, I have steered well clear of the scales this week as I have the mother of all TOM's at the moment. Was Was momentarily tempted to get on just to see out of interest, how much I gained during the week, but I know exactly what seeing a huge jump can do to my motivation! So I decided to save my sanity and skip my weigh - in until this Friday. It does, however, explain why I went OTT on chocolate Easter weekend, as chocolate is never usually a problem for me. The prices we pay for being women eh?! Not to mention the fact that I have taken residency upon my sofa for the past three days as I feel sure someone is ripping my insides out As soon as my period has buggered off I am going to take advantage of the lovely spring sunshine and embark upon some long walks and bike rides. Never really guaged exactly how much difference exercise makes on my weight loss personally, but it can but help. I have yet to try my Davina McCall workout DVD so can dust that off too - anyone else tried it? As we are all shorites ( I have a BMI of 23 currently ( 128lbs ) and want to get down to a BMI of 20. Has anyone else tried to lose weight similarly, and if so, have you found it harder to lose weight as you were never actually overweight? What was your daily intake like? Exercised significantly, or just the light, government weekly recomendation? Trying to figure out an approach here, so would be grateful of others experiences / ideas? Happy Monday people! Here's to good losses for the week ahead all round! J x |

I would say eat sensibly - DON'T EAT TO COMPENSATE! You will set your body up for a blood sugar rollercoaster and risk throwing your body and diet out of whack for a day or two. You didn't binge - you just indulged more than you would have perhaps liked! It is part of life, what is more important is reflecting on it and developing strategies for times like this in the future - as there WILL be more times like these - so just see it as a lesson learned. For example, next time, tell yourself you can have ONE plate with a small piece of three of the best looking items etc. As for ruining all your hard work, don't worry you will be fine. A pound of fat is equivalent of 3500 calories - so you would never have got 14,000 ( 4 lbs! ) on three platefuls of pot luck goodies! Just don't get on the scales for a few days as you may be retaining a bit of fluid! J x |

the two options are - 1. Keep it, eat it, feel awful and throw you off the wagon. or 2. Bin it, keep in control and don't feel rubbish afterwards which do you think would have provided the best value for money here for your Mum?! I personally would rather throw it than keep it because I know I can't be trusted. Are you the kind of person that can resist temptation? J x |

Hi all! And Happy Easter! I just weighed in ( 2 days late! ) but I figure as it is a Bank Hol in the UK it is acceptable to be a little slower this weekend! My start weight last week was 132lbs Today . . . . . drum roll . . . . . 128.8! Not bad considering I have troffed an whole Easter Egg this week! There is another one now eyeing me up in my kitchen so I think I may need to find a small child to donote it to, as they will no doubt apreciate it a little more that my already cuddly hips! I guess it just goes to show that even with an, *ahem*, ' small ' chocolate egg ( okay, and the two chocolate bars that went with it! ) you can still put it back and lose with a bit of selective food choices and longer walks! Hope everyone else is battling the Easter bunny / chicks successfully. If all else fails - it is only once a year thank God! Happy Easter ladies! J x |

Hey, how did you get on? Did you go for a visit? The Priorys are all very similar - I was at the one in Chelmsford. They are really good at taking an individual approach to each person, instead of stereotyping people as ' food phobic and needing to be fed up '! If you go in you will get a keyworker who will work very closely to help you. The best advice I can give is to be 100% to them from the day you go in. Also, take advantage of all the group therapies they have - it really helps unearth the emotions and feelings that stirred up the eating disorder in the first place - and you may be suprised to find it may all have stemmed from something you never even consciously thought about! Good luck and well done for acknowledging the need to seek help. If ever you need to talk you know where I am! Jem. |

Hey, I found each clinic to be different. I had two admissions to the Priory and one to another London clinci and I found the approaches and meal plans varied. When I was at my worst I was put on a phosphate diet for a week as they were worried I would be unable to digest anyhting rich or fiborous so I basically had to have Cornflakes or Rice Krispies, white toast and jam, mash potato, scrambled egg and peas and lots of whole milk and whole milk yogurt. It was bland but manageable. The meal plans then go up in stages at 500 calorie increments, as and when you key worker ( someone who asigned to work alongside you ) feels your head and body can cope with / need the next stage. Initially I was never allowed to see my weight for the first month as you tend to rehydrate and ' jump ' a little, but it soon jumps back down again. Then they steadily expect you to gain 1-2 lbs a week. I had weeks where I did not gain and even lost though, which you never really can quite believe - the body is funny. It took me 11 months in one admission to get to an okay weight - borderline BMI too, so the weight gain is never as fast as you fear. Do not worry about being thrown platefuls of food as soon as you get there - they start very slow, and completely understand that this is an illness where you fear food and the last thing they want to do is scar you mentally even further. All I can say is be honest and take the help that is there. Anytime you need a chat or things get to much I will help in any way I can. Best of luck to you. It may seem impossible, but all you need is a bit of faith, willpower and you will already be half way there.x |

Hi. I am sorry to hear you are struggling at the minute. I have been an impatient in the UK 3 times - one 11 month admission, one 7 month admission and then another 8 month one. My lowest weight was 3 stone 8lbs ( 50lbs ) so I was pretty accute. I went in once on a section 2, once on a section 3 and once voluntarily. I am now fully recovered and my periods have just returned after 10 years and have miraculously been like clockwork for the past three months ( touch wood! ) Anyway, I am not sure exactly what you want to know, but if I can be of any help please feel free to PM me. I went there a year or so ago and am also vegetarian. I found it tricky to find many veggie options, but if you stick with bean curd, stir fry veg, steamed rice / noodles etc you shouldn't go far wrong. The food isn't actually too greasy, of course it depends on the restaurant, but on the whole, not bad! I returned the same weight I was when I left. Breakfast was weird - I was eating steamed quash, boiled aggs and tomato and cucumbers slices most days lol. hope this is of some help. p.s they have starbucks if all else fails! and mc donalds and kfc lol |

No, I haven't just come off birth control. All I know is I daren't get on the scales as I fear another gain without reason will upset me more. I am a pretty fussy eater, and without being obsessive or compulsive, my diet is fairly repetitive, but still balanced. I am 5'3" and have maintained 110lbs for a couple of years, and suddenly, with no change to my 1400 - 1600 daily diet or exercise routine - bam - I'm 125! Can anybody else offer us any light or ideas to help rewind on the weight gain?! Or at least stop further! jx |

Cereal, cereal . . . . CEREAL! I spent New Years in Chicago and practically inhaled a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Quaker Cinamon Life in 4 days! Back home Special K, Fruit n Fibre, Just Right and Curiously Cinnamon are the usual suspects. I am okay with it in a sealed box in the cupboard, but as soon as it is open and I take a bite it is a ticking time bomb that does take more than a few seconds to go BANG! I am trying to lose a few lbs at the moment - about 10lbs - and I find it very hard to regain control like this once I have started. I find cereal is the killer. I have just joined the ' 6 lbs by valentines day ' post for a bit of fun and maybe help with regaining control and 'fessing up1 How about you join too and we can sipport each other with getting back on track tomorrow and enjoying food rather than envying it?! I agree, eat normally, BUT only if you feel hungry. Don't eat your meals just because it's meal time today and you feel you should. Eat light low - sodium foods with lots of liver cleansing water! Even if it isn't particularly appealing right now, your liver will thank you ; ) |

I think sometimes ' diet ' products may seem a better option than they actually are - take digestive biscuits for instance. There is a brand in my local supermarket which have a regular version and a ' 25% reduced fat ' version. The reduced fat verson would be better, right? Well interestingly enough, when I compared the nutrition information on the packs, the regular version DID have 25% more fat, but the reduced fat version had 3 more calories per biscuit and an extra 10 grams of ugar per 100g! Plus, as 'katydid22' has already stated - people tend to think they are being good and go and eat more of the diet stuff anyway! My opinion - false economy! ; ) |
