| Weight Loss | anxiety.can anyone help me with that? | Jun 29 2007 16:05 (UTC) |

| I agree with the exercise suggestion. I have been suffering from pretty severe panic and anxiety disorder for several years. When I started exercising on a regular basis, about a month ago, I can totally tell the difference. My moods are much more steady and I sleep so much better. Now when I get agitated and jumpy, and 20 minute walk outside really improves things. Also, make sure you are sleeping enough and regularly. That helps immeasurably. You can take melatonin (not habit forming) for a couple of weeks to set a regular rhythm if you don't have one.
Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | is it bad to map your whole day around a hershey bar? | Jun 29 2007 16:01 (UTC) |

| of course that's not bad. if you ask me, it's smart. I eat chocolate every day....because I work it into my calories. And I've lost 13 pounds so far.
Eat the chocolate, girl, and enjoy every second of it!! :D |

| Weight Loss | is it a good idea to stop eating carbs for 2 weeks to lose water retention? | Jun 27 2007 05:52 (UTC) |
1 |
| yes, carbs make you retain water. I think it's something like 1 gm makes you hold 3 gms of water.
If you cut carbs for two weeks you will: 1) feel like crap and have no energy and 2) gain all that water weight back the second a piece of bread or some pasta passes your lips. I suggest you just eat "good" carbs. Whole wheat breads and pastas, cut out sweets and sodas, etc. Like eugrrrlll already suggested!! :D |

| I've had these...I ADORE THEM. And I would think that the calorie count is accurate, because there is really not very much food in there. The quantity of chicken compares easily to some of the extremely low cal Lean Cuisines out there. Go for it. They taste AWESOME. Very surprising for pre-packaged and frozen. | |||
| Weight Loss | How accurate is CC...? | Jun 27 2007 02:57 (UTC) |
4 |
| Yea...you're probably not eating enough and slowing your metabolism down. The problem with too much of a calorie deficit is that you tend to lose muscle along with fat and that slows your metabolism down and then your body goes into "I need to store any calories I get my hands on" mode which slows your metabolism down even more. Try upping your food by 100 or 200 cals for a week. And you should probably work up to about 1500 cals if you are working out that much. | |||

| Health & Support | Anorexics (starvation and weight loss versus starvation mode) | Jun 24 2007 22:03 (UTC) |
30 |
| Also, if you don't eat your body will eventually cannibilize your own organs. Untreated Anorexics will wind up with permanent heart problems, if those heart problems don't kill them first. And it's because your body destroys those tissues to survive.
Also, don't confuse the term "starvation mode" with actually starving yourself. Starvation mode is just a term to describe what your body does when you diet too restrictively and your body's metabolism slows down in order to live off the limited calories you're feeding it. Starving yourself, as in Anorexia, is not even in the same realm. |

| Weight Loss | chicken broth | Jun 24 2007 18:02 (UTC) |

| I've tried that. And it does work. I don't know why, because it is not much more than water.... maybe it's because it seems like real food because it smells and tastes delicious!
I use low-sodium (or no sodium if I can find it) broth. And it still works to kill my appetite for a while. |

| Amaryllis: The exact same thing happened to me. I started out at 225 and lost 10 lbs in about 2 weeks. And I follow the CC guidelines pretty well. I think that the heavier you are, the more you will lose.... at first. Yes, some of it IS water weight and all of that losing will slow down eventually. Not that I want it to. Oh well! :D
Congratulations on progress! Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Muscle weighs more than fat myth. | Jun 24 2007 17:42 (UTC) |

| Of course 1lb = 1lb. But do you remember that old trick question: what weighs more, 1lb of feathers or 1lb of bricks? That's the same thing with fat loss. And if you are a person with a crippled metabolism from years of yo-you dieting, then at first you'll probably just lose inches (if you are exercising along with dieting) but not much, if any, weight. I think most people understand this. And this whole muscle vs. fat thing is just an easier way for people to think about it if they have been struggling and feel encouraged. Why disparage people for that? Weight loss is not easy for anyone. And it takes some people longer than others to make all the necessary changes, especially the mental change, in order to be successful. So I think that flinging out a general statement that people are just making excuses for not succeeding at weight loss is not very constructive or helpful to anyone. I think most of us are on CC to keep motivated and get inspiration. We've all made excuse after excuse....just because one person suddenly has their act together doesn't mean they're suddenly entitled to think less of other people and how they are dealing with their own struggle. |

| You'll be fine. You haven't eaten enough to gain a pound, though you might for a day or two from water. I checked your profile and you recently reached your goal! Way to go...you look great! Maintaining is the hardest part. Lots of people have been successful at losing weight, but not many can keep it off. You're at that hard stage now. But you haven't really done any damage. Tomorrow is another day. Don't beat yourself up, that'll likely make things worse! Think positive and glory in the fact that you've worked so hard which proves that you are a tough girl! Chin up! :D | |||

| Weight Loss | Has anyone else heard of Okinawa Tea? I've just | Jun 24 2007 02:09 (UTC) |
|
| the "okinawa tea" is a SCAM. all it is is oolong tea. it is not magical in any way. in fact, oolong is made from the same plant that green tea comes from, it's just processed slightly differently. you can get oolong tea for much cheaper than that!! i almost got taken in by this exact same thing...placed an order actually...then I researched it afterward and immediately cancelled my order. It took me couple of weeks to get my money back, too, even though they were plenty quick in cancelling my order. Google this stuff (and stay away from the sales sites)...I promise you, it is just regular Oolong tea. Don't fall for this. I can't remember the other names that this can go under, but all of the miracle diet teas being sold on the net are nothing but Oolong with a fancy name. | |||

| Weight Loss | Chewing Gum... | Jun 23 2007 22:15 (UTC) |

| I used to have the worst chewing gum habit...then one day I noticed that it really gives me more of a tendency to snack. I think that keeping your saliva flowing constantly is a bad thing and just turns your body's "feed me now" response on when it shouldn't be. It may help some folks, but I'm in the same boat you're in! | |||

| Weight Loss | Anybody start on Alli | Jun 23 2007 20:29 (UTC) |
9 |
| Totally...I'd much rather factor it into my calories, if I'm really dying for Taco Bell...which I do sometimes. It's an addiction, what can I say?! :D Plus, the idea of expelling a portion of your food undigested is just a little bit terrible. I would develop an aversion to the pills, not the food, I think. | |||
| Weight Loss | Anybody start on Alli | Jun 23 2007 20:19 (UTC) |
11 |
| Well, I have heard some people refer to it as "aversion therapy". You are eating too much fat, take the Alli, and alter your eating habits once you find out what the side effects are! Which is fine, I suppose, if you want to put yourself through that. I'll pass, though!
And yes, Alli and Xenical are the same. Xenical is double the strength and available by prescription only. |
|||
| Weight Loss | Anybody start on Alli | Jun 23 2007 20:10 (UTC) |
14 |
| I started it, but gave it up. Not because of side effects, but because my diet is too low-fat for it to help me much. I did the math and with my current fat intake Alli would only help me lose 1 extra pound in three months...and it costs about 40 - 50 $$ per month. So, not worth it for me. Their program suggests no more than 15 gms of fat per meal and I barely go over that in a whole day! I'm certainly not going to alter my diet so that it can help me. That would be weird! :D Feel free to read my journal. I have a couple of in depth posts on my short Alli experiment. | |||
| Weight Loss | Breakfast question | Jun 23 2007 20:05 (UTC) |
12 |
| my boyfriend has this same problem. He NEVER eats breakfast. He recently started dieting and lost a ton of weight, but now he's stalled out and I am convinced it is because of the breakfast issue. The way I've been told to deal with this is to start small. Something is better than nothing at all. Don't even try to go for a bowl of cereal right away. Eat a piece of fruit, or a piece of toast, basically whatever you like...but just a small amount for a week or two and then gradually increase from there. I've always eaten breakfast, but I've recently started the whole 5 - 6 small "meals" throughout the day and I have to tell you....so far my weight is melting off (I know it'll slow down eventually), so it really does rev your metabolism. I'm convinced of this. But you have to start with breakfast! :D Just take it small and slow! | |||
| Weight Loss | Question on Tuna and Mercury Contents... | Jun 22 2007 20:29 (UTC) |

| I know that and I did. It's a risk vs. benefits situation. All I'm saying is, why even risk it when there are alternatives available now so that you can even further minimize your risk? And that was my suggestion to the post: take purified fish oil if the whole idea of contamination and the risks of mercury (ANY level) freak you out too much. I have to tell you that the reason I distrust info from the FDA so much is because I know all too well how the whole drug approval (and recall) process works. A few years of Pharmacy would leave most people jaded. Anyway, I can't imagine that they are any more careful with our food. I would love to get into this some more, but I have to go back to work now! | |||
