I totally agree MZ, and thanks for clarifying that :)  I still eat my fruits and WHOLE WHEAT products but cut out the refined and white stuff!  I'm still learning and appreciate your response...  there IS benefit to watching carbs, but specifically the bad white ones!
Weight Loss low-carb diets? Aug 15 2007

I think a lot of people are wrapped up in saying low/no carbs is unhealthy and unrealistic.  However, there are many people out there (including myself) that benefit greatly from eating low carb due to my body's low tolerance of sugars and inability to process them thus causing insulin imbalances - and affecting my overall health in more ways than I could ever have imagined!  I do believe low carb isn't for everyone... but for someone to say low carb isn't healthy, that's untrue.  I think many people go through life not knowing how close they are to being a type 2 diabetic b/c they've abused sugar/carbs for much of their life and or weren't looking for the signs their body was sending saying it can't handle that much sugar (acne, excess weight, fatigue, infertility...all indicators).  Even though I was never more than moderately overweight - I now know I never could have lost this 30lbs without changing the way I look at sugars and carbs.  My life is changed forever and I will continue eating this way for the rest of my life.   It's unfortuate many people know only about Atkins and don't read more into the science behind carbs before discounting the value in eating low carbs.
Motivation My Husband is No Longer Attracted to Me Jul 31 2007

Hi M!

You've gotten a lot of great advice already, so I don't want to repeat - but I do want to say one thing that I realized...

I love to eat too (not a surprise), love to cook, warm cookies out of the oven, love pleasing my husband with a nice dinner when gets home from work - it was DEPRESSING having to stop all that.  I go through a mourning process when I first start dieting - I'm depressed and sad.  Saying goodbye to ice cream every night, not cooking cinnamon rolls, no more donuts at work...  it took me about 2 weeks to get over it .  You'll need time too be sad and say good bye too - you can't just shut off your want for those foods.  It doesn't go away, you'll always want to cook and eat those good foods, but at least you'll be in better control.   I promise, two weeks and you'll be on your new eating schedule and routine that it will just be second nature!  And by that time you'll have dropped a few pounds and there's your MOTIVATION! It will feel wonderful - I promise!!! :) :) :)

I've dieted before, but not to this level of success (lost 24lbs so far) and I keep telling myself NOT TO QUIT!  I've quit before and that set me back - so if I just don't quit, I never have to start over and go through the horrible first few weeks of starting a diet :)

BEST OF LUCK TO YOU! :)   Do it for yourself, and it will just be a bonus if it brings your DH closer to you :)  It's for YOU first!
Weight Loss Who plans out their daily or weekly menu? Jul 24 2007

YES! I have to plan my daily/weekly menu or else I'm left to what's easy and ready to eat.  By planning ahead I buy what I want from the grocery store, I bring my lunch to work and have a regular dinner to keep me on track.  Weekends are the worst b/c I'm out of my schedule - I try my best though!

I don't know about green tea curbing carb cravings, but I'm a faithful green tea drinker each morning.  I think it fills me up, I know it's has lots of antioxidants, and I do believe it's helping in my weight loss!

Weight Loss does low carb result in faster losses? Jul 05 2007

I don't follow atkins, nor to I actually count my carbs - but I drastically cut back and have noticed an amazing difference in my weight loss - for the GOOD :)   I was struggling with loosing weight early on and finally it dawned on me - even though I was eating "healthy" carbs (breakfast-multigrain cheerios, snacks-whole wheat crackers, lunch- whole wheat sandwich... get my point? ;)) I wasn't loosing the weight!  I introduced more protien into my diet for dinner (instead of breads and pasta), eat egg whites (one yolk 2 whites) for breakfast - and I've been a steady "looser" for going on 10 weeks now!!!  I would respectfully disagree and say that eating less carbs HAS taught me a great deal about introducing other foods into my diet to balance everything out. Even though I was eating healthy before, it was too many carbs ;)

Weight Loss pros and cons EDIT Atkins V South Beach!!! Jul 02 2007

I've never specifically followed the Atkins diet, nor have I read the book.  However, I will say that I have greatly benefitted from a low carb diet!  NOT NO CARB, low carb. Previously I was so dependant on my carbs, even carbs I considered healthy such as multigrain cheerios for breakfast, wheat thins for a snack, whole wheat bread for lunch, and on and on.  So, while I don't suggest a low carb diet, I do suggest looking at the carbs you do eat and eat them in moderation :)  I haven't cut out carbs, just cut back and I've been dropping lbs at a stead rate since then :)

HI Mzshelly and merze...

There are many more CC experts here that go into great detail on the ins and outs of CC.. but basically a woman needs to eat at least 1200 calories per day.  Use the tools on the site (such as this one http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/calorie s-goal.php) to help you determine the proper number of caloires you burn on a normal day, and how many you should eat per day to loose weight.   You'll catch on quickly!! :)  Best of luck :)

I have a tendancy towards depression and suffer from social anxiety - I find the more I get outside, in the sunlight and being active, the better I do!  I am stuck at my desk all day, but now that the weather is warmer, I go outside after work to go for a walk, work in my garden, sit on the porch and read a magazine - all of this helps!  I dread winter b/c I'm afraid of the seasonal depression, but I know the key is to stay active!  Best of luck to you...

Weight Loss Weekends and Restaurants Jun 29 2007
15:46 (UTC)
This is always hard for me - weekends and restaurants... and of course, the always go together.   I also look for chicken and salads.  I have a restaurant that I like going to b/c they have a grilled chicken wrap stuffed with lettuce, tomatos, and just a tiny bit of cheese. I get some dressing on the side for light dipping and it's great.   The hardest part is however, the rolls they serve before dinner, the meal might come with soup...grr... it's just so hard to resist!!!

I will say though, the weekends I usually eat more anyway... but still healthy.  I generally don't see any weight loss over the weekends - but by Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, I've dropped my pounds for the week.  So I do think a good bit of extra food on the weekends is good to keep your metabolism on its feet!

I don't think there's anything you can do to lighten your period. Its the natural shedding of your uterine lining, it all needs to come out to start the cycle over again.  If it is really abnormal or lasts longer than normal, you need to call your doctor!
Weight Loss First few weeks are the hardest... Jun 28 2007
15:47 (UTC)
Absolutely agree with you! I get depressed when I start thinking I'll never reach my goal, I'll quit b/c I get bored, I'll quit b/c I won't lose fast enough. When I first start, I miss my evening snack, I want the donuts my coworkers bring in for breakfast, etc... it's SO hard the first couple weeks.  But for me, it has gotten much easier, and as I see the results each day on the scale -  it becomes easier and I'm proud that I made it this far (19.8 lbs in 10 weeks).   If you don't think you're losing fast enough (but 3 lbs is great ;)), switch up your diet, be strict in counting your calories, cut back on carbs for a few days...  add some extra exercise :)  You'll stay motivated when you see that scale moving downward!

Have you switched up what your eating the the exercise you're doing?

To break my first plateau - I ate less carbs, more protein (just until I saw the scale moving down again).   I also changed my exercise.  Not necessarily harder, just different. SO instead of biking, I was doing heavy yard work through a long weekend.  Mix things up!!  Oh yes, GREEN TEA!!! I have that every morning. I swear it is helping me continue to lose. I hate green tea, but if I let it cool off, I can gulp it down quickly!  It curbs my appetite, and with my light breakfast, it gets my metabolism moving :)  Hope that helps!

Your lack of period could be caused by things outside of your diet - if your dr can't get you in soon enough, find another doctor that can!  Even a family doctor can run some test for you and assist on your hairloss...  good luck!

What are you eating? How much exercise?   I found that by changing my carb heavy diet into a more protien focused diet finally triggered my body to loose the lbs :)
Weight Loss hitting plateau? Jun 21 2007
20:05 (UTC)
I don't think it's absolutly necessary to exercise, but I think it helps move the process along.  So keep that in mind, if you want it to go faster, add some long walks :)  I have to MAKE time to exercise, as much as I didn't like to, but I've come to enjoy it much more now that the weather is nice.  Even if it's just walking for a half hour or so - it's still doing you lots of good :)

You know, I never really watch the %'s on my chart. I just don't "get" it and I know I'm on the right track so I don't worry about it too much.  LIke I said, I still have carbs, but a lot less :)

I really like scrambled eggs :)  So in the morning I have 1 yolk and two whites (so, one egg with an extra white) with a cup of green tea.  I think the green tea truly TRULY helps curb my appetite and it is so good for you.  If you don't like green tea (I don't), get the flavored kind and I actually prefer to drink it cold.  I heat it in the microwave and let it cool before drinking it. I also have a big glass of water in the morning to replace what I lost during the night.  And that's it.  I don't eat anything else for breakfast.   I go to work and have a snack around 9-10 of fruit or some wheat crackers.  Lunch is usually a veggie sandwich on wheat bread (today was a half a tbs of pb on bread, yum!!) and yogurt.  Another snack of crackers/fruit around 2-3 and then dinner was always light on carbs.  So, that usually meant a grilled chicken breast, cottage cheese, and a veggie.  I love broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts.  I'd put a little butter and salt on them and then I'd be done for the day :)   I always felt full and satisfied.    On my lighter calorie days, I do have a snack after dinner, but I wait at least an hour after dinner.     I think it is important to eat more meals throughout the day, and in smaller portions, rather than three big meals.  But spacing what I'm eating every few hours, I believe it keeps my energy and metabolism up :)   I hope that helps!!!  You can DO IT :)
Weight Loss Grrrrr Jun 21 2007

When I started my diet at the beginning of the year, I didn't loose for a whole month.  I gave up :(  I didn't know what I was doing wrong b/c I was exercising really great and eating healthy.  Seriously, I didn't loose ONE POUND!  Looking back, I think I was eating too few calories...and the calories I did have were loaded with carbs.    So I decided to go at it again a few months ago, and I started to loose right away.   What did I do differently?  Well, I cut coffee.  I don't know how or why that would affect anything, but it did.  I stopped coffee and diet sodas, made sure to eat my suggested calories.   I didn't exercise very much at first, but added it in as I saw the scale move downward and I got excited to see more results!   My advice would be, change what you're eating.  I also realized I was eating way too many carbs! They were "healthy" carbs - like multigrain cheerios, low sodium wheat thins, whole wheat bread, but HOLY HECK, I was eating all carbs.  When I started my diet again a few months ago, I cut back on carbs majorly, but not entirely.  For breakfast I have a scrambled egg (plus an extra white).  I still have fruit and wheat bread for snacks and lunch, but my dinner was mostly a protien (chicken breast), cottage cheese, and a veggie.  Sorry to be long winded, but that's what got my scale moving down!

You know, I don't know if by keeping the same routine you will eventually move past the plateau...  I think everyone suggests changing things up (your diet, your exercise) to not only stimulate your body to do things differently, but also to keep you from getting bored and frustrated from not loosing.  I will say, when I was on a plateu, I was getting very discouraged and almost gave up.  I knew I didn't need to reduce calories (if anything I wasn't having enough), so I did a little more agressvie exercising and changed my diet to have more protien and a few less carbs for a few days... it worked for me :)  So, imo, I don't think it's a matter so much of adding/subtracting calories and exercise as much as it is to just change things up to keep your mind and body entertained ;)

Maybe someone already suggested this - but especially after lunch, brush your teeth ;)  It helps me b/c I like the fresh clean feeling!  If I've snacked in the morning/afternoon and I want more, I try to remember to pop in a piece of gum instead :) Again, the fresh mouth.

I can totally relate!  There's something about that 1000 mark that makes me feel in control, and adding to that seems scary for the same reason you mentioned - that it will push you overboard.  It wasn't until I found this site did I realize I HAD to add more...  I did it by adding half a serving of peanut butter to a piece of wheat bread for lunch - only 90 calories for half a normal serving of PB (1 tbs.)  Another way to slowly add calories without feeling like you're losing control, add some olive oil to your cooking. I've added a few cubes of cheese to a salad...  small things like that are easy to add and easy to control!  Good luck to you :)

It's natural for your weight to fluctuate by a few pounds day to day due to water and waste in your digestive tract.
