| Hey Cheryl I know what you mean...my pant are baggy in the butt but not in the waist!!! I have been menopausal for 6 or so years now and I can tell such a drastic change in my proportions. seems like no matter what i do I stll got this "thick" waist. It's frustrating but I keep tring different exercises to see what might work. I have finally lost some of the yuk from my upper back by using weights. I was shoked one day when I caught a glimpse of my back in the mirror with my bra on. It was not pretty so I knew I had to do something. I am working hard to try and figure out what will work for the "spare tire" I will let you know what progress I make.

| Weight Loss | Losing weight in your 40s - is it really harder? | May 09 2008 02:00 (UTC) |

| Definitely over 40 is ALOT harder to lose. I have always been a "winter gainer" and had no problems losing it by Spring. Not anymore!! I am 45 now and it just seems to get harder every year because I haven't really lost it all in like 4 years which just keeps adding up to the next year. I know menopause has a big affect as well but I won't give up. It's not impossible at all just takes a little more patience. | |||

| Sorry about your ankle home4ed...I know that has to be a real pain especially with the kids and home schooling. I hope it gets well soon!!
Corky, I wish I could help you with the ice cream thing but I haven't made home made icecream since I was like 12 when me and my brothers took turns turning that old ice cream churn with the rock salt and ice. I would google it to find recipes. |

| ok I tried this site. I still don't understand why my heart rate only shows 104 after 10 or 15 mins on the elliptical now. It used to go 140 or better when I started going to the gym Feb 1st going alot slower and on level one. Now I go level 7 or 8 and do 3 miles in 30 mins and 104 or 105 seems to be the highest heart rate the elliptical shows. I feel like I am working really hard cause I am soaking wet with sweat when I am done with those 30 mins. Should I just ignore what the eliptical says? | |||

| Thank you all very much. I think the overtraining thing might be part of it because when i started going to the gym Feb 1st it didn't take long at all to get my heart rate up (at a much slower pace and level 1). I will try to ask someone at the gym about it. | |||

| OK all fill me in on the progesterone cream. I have been taking activella hrt for a while which has estrogen and progesterone. I only take it 2 or 3 times a week to keep the hot flashes at bay. If I take it everyday the periods come back..no thanks. If all I need is progesterone then by all means I will try that. | |||

| ok this heart rate thing is something I need to learn about too. How do you know what that is? I know on the elliptical it keeps track of the heart rate but how do you know what it should be for the most weight loss? I have never had this explained to me. Maybe that would help me to know where to be on the treadmill or cycle. | |||

| Oh PS - you can also try "cycling" - eat more calories on the days you work out (say, 1500 - 1600), then less on the days you don't (1200 - 1300). Sometimes just breaking up the routine will get your metabolism going again.
Thanks Digi..sounds like good advice. I will keep you posted |

| Increase calories until you didn't add more muscle mass than you did last week, and there's your optimal calorie level :) couldnt that take a long time to figure out? |

| Now I have another question.... Someone at the gym told me I should "mix up" my cardio. that I should do elliptical, treadmill and bicycle alternatively. Is this what everyone else thinks or am I ok to do the elliptical everyday since it burns more calories | |||

| Hello All!! Haven't posted lately. I am struggling with the whole calorie thing. I keep reading on here how your body goes into "starvation mode" without enough calories. Is it just at OUR age or what? I know from past experience that if I cut my calories back to 1200 a day or less I lose weight. Plain & simple Huh? Well somehow thats not working this time. I have been very strict about my calories since March 1st and only a measley 2 or 3 lbs!! I just cant see myself trying to eat 1500 or 1600 calories to LOOSE weight. It's so against what I am used to doing. Doesn't your body eventually get out of that starvation mode and start to lose? | |||

| Spiro I wish I were you for a day!!! I am 45 and the guys (or boys) tht hang out on the free weight side of the gym are really young, compared to 45 anyway. I NEVER see any females participating in any freeweights on "THAT SIDE" can you give me any way to break the ice without seeming like some old woman trying to invade "their space"? | |||

| Melkor, I totally agree with you on the benefits of free weights. I know from previous experience when I was going to group classes at Gold's gym and using free weights for an hour doing "Body Pump classes" 3 times a week I got a quick positive response as far as muscles and the way my body looked. Now that I am not in an area that I can go I feel very awkward using free weights in the gym i am going to now because there are only males on the side of the gym with free weights. That's why I opt for the machines...seems to be a "men only" side with the weights. I didn't realize it was that way when I joined but now i have 3 yrs membership. Since I feel so awkward about this can you give me any "clever" ways to break the barrier and just go do it? | |||

| Welocme back Edieglass!1 I hope vacation was wonderful...I'm jealous, been a while since I took one!! What is hashimoto disease? I have never heard of it. Don't feel bad about the 3 lbs. I weighed yesterday and gained 2 lbs in a week so 3 lbs in almost 2 is not bad...especially on vacation.
Dawn, That was a great weight loss we need your secret!! i havent lost 6 lbs in 3 months. Congratulations to you |

| Digigirl Thanks for that info I have been wondering about that too but I am still trying to get used to this whole being over 40 thing I guess. I used to be able to cut the cals and lose in no time..doesn't seem to be working now. My muscles feel so stressed from this new punishment I've been putting them through LOL!! What do you think I should add the calories in carbs, or proteins? I really hate to sabotage all my effort. | |||

| Hello all!! Today was weigh in at the gym. In a whole month I have lost a whopping 1.2 lbs!!! What in the world?? I have been working my butt off and keeping my cals around 1200. Looks like i gotta do SOMETHING different but I haven't figured out what that will be yet. I might have to give up the Michelob Ultras. Even though I include them with my calories they gotta be slowing the weight loss down. My trainer says not to stress (I only have her once a month), but I was hoping for at leat 3 lbs gone in a month. Anyway I hope everyone else is having a better month, I'll keep on keeping on with what I'm doing for another month. I just know one of these weigh ins will be a pleasant surprise. Sorry to be going on ut I needed to vent a little. | |||
