Foods are these foods diet-friendly? Feb 16 2009

Dates are high in sugar, but also high in fiber and potassium. I love one or two when I'm craving sweets, or for a  snack with walnuts - I just take out the stone and fill it back up with a walnut half - YUM!

Sweet Potatos are high in fiber, vitamin c, vitamin A, iron, calcuim, and beta carotine - another great choice!

My oil of choice is olive oil, and PAM makes an olive oil based cooking spray, which is fantastic too (although I usually buy the store brand, just as good but about $ .75 less!)

SNL was right...the person who snapped that photo and 'leaked' it to the media (for no small sum, I'm sure) is a first-rate a**h**e.

He smoked pot. Big f'in deal. Chris Brown beats the crap out of women and is still getting an IMAGE award, even though he lost his "Got Milk" spot.

Phelps' DUI was mentioned by an earlier poster - why didn't that get any press?...Oh yeah...he wasn't anyone's cash cow yet.

It's all about $$$, not morality...whatever that means.

Ugh.

I hate those articles, too. I'm another one who mostly eats healthfully (most of the time - sometimes a cookie or some chocolate sneaks in there, but not to excess), drinks plenty of water, I've been walking on my lunchbreaks since the beginning of the year, and I still have a bunch to lose, too!

Grrrrrr.....

I'm right there with ya.

My standard 'Toilet Lid & Seat Operating Procedure' is as follows:

  • At home - husband sometimes leaves it up, sometimes puts it back down. I generally return the toilet to the neutral 'lid and seat down' position when finished.
  • Lid and seat down in unisex public restrooms. (This applies when visiting friends & family as well)
  • 'Women only' public restrooms WITH lid = lid and seat down, no lid = seat remains the same
  • 'Men only' public restroom (in case of emergency ONLY) - Lid & seat go back up Wink

Are you taking any sort of medication? Facial swelling can be a side effect of certain drugs - prednizone for one, and there may be others.

See your doctor, and be sure to remind them of any medications you may be on, especially if you have changed dosages, and also if you are using any OTC medications or suppliments.

Weight Loss A question for women who lost a lot of weight... Jan 20 2009

I don't remember my bra size when I was at my High School heaviest - 220 pounds, but 38C sounds about right....at my lowest weight of 135, I was a respectable (but flattened looking, for sure Frown) 36B, now that I'm in the 230-240 range, I'm up to a 42 band, and a C-DD depending on the style of bra.

When I get to my goal weight (180 - for now, then we'll see) if they're too droopy, I think I'll be looking for a good plastic surgeon for a 'refill'.

I love 'the twins' as they are now...maybe a lift would be nice...but I really enjoy having a lush, feminine shape, and I HATE that I generally lose from there first.

I'm another of the "doesn't get scared by movies" tribe...but I had nightmares about the "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe" episode of South Park...I woke up screaming about aliens the night I saw it...

(funny, but also true Wink )

I liked the first few Saw movies...until they started getting predictable. The first few I enjoyed because I was thrown for a loop by the endings, and I am very rarely surprised by Hollywood endings

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Hellraiser movies, Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, and all the Nightmaer on Elm Street movies...they're hilarious and gory - what more could a girl ask for? lol! I also loved Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Bundy, The Jeffery Dahmer Story, Gacy (Starring the actor who played "Francis" in Pee Wee's Big Adventure !!)...Bundy especially is full of 'shouldn't be amused but I find it funny' scenes.

There are a few movies that have been mentioned I've never heard of but will definitely have to check out soon

Health & Support How do you cope with growing old? Jan 19 2009

Well, I'm going to be 35 this year, and although that certainly isn't old by any means, it's the oldest I've been, and it does feel a little like something major...whether it is or not is all up to me.

Here's my plan to "cope with growing old"...

Do what I can to keep myself healthy, and know that I've earned every grey hair.... those little lines around my eyes and at the corners of my mouth aren't called 'smile lines' for nothing - and anything that indicates a lifetime of smiling and laughter can't be all bad, right?

Also, I keep in mind a conversation I once had - I was good friends with a co-worker, she was in her 60's and I was in my 20's when we knew eachother, and the topic of growing older came up...she let me in on a little secret....the older one gets, the more 'allowable' one's eccentricities become.  Just soemthing to think about ;-)

The Lounge Does anyone else have a stay-at-home husband? Jan 16 2009

It's interesting how much more accepting people are of stay-at-home DADS versus stay-at-home HUSBANDS...

We don't have children and don't plan to reproduce {for a number of reasons}, but whether we do or don't shouldn't make a difference in regards to which one of us works outside of the home, and which one vacumes and feeds the cat...

The Lounge Does anyone else have a stay-at-home husband? Jan 16 2009

I have a part-time stay-at-home husband, and it only bugs me when he's snoring away all warm and cozy, and I'm cursing at the alarm clock...Tongue out

We've had many conversations about how hypocritical it is that no one bats an eyelash if a woman stays home and her husband/boyfriend works and handles the finances, but reverse the roles and he's a deadbeat and she must be desperate to be willing to support her man...what a load of ****! I was supporting 'my household' when I was single - how does adding a man into the equation makes a difference?

That is DEFINITELY not to say that he doesn't 'support' our household as well - we both do our part, and have a well-known gesture to share with anyone who thinks they can define what either one's 'part' should be!

Health & Support LEEP procedure ..anyone ever have one? Jan 13 2009
21:28 (UTC)

It didn't change anything for me, either (in regards to having sex)...I had a LEEP done in July 2006, and I did notice that {after the two - three weeks the doctor said to wait) my cervix was more 'sensitive' during more vigorous 'activity' with my husband.

Also, the OP mentioned having some weird emotional stuff, and general anesthesia - I had both also. The day of and the day after my LEEP I spent in bed. I wasn't really in much pain, just a little crampy, but I was really lethargic and kinda weepy. I was really nervous before the procedure, so I think all the emotional build-up contributed to my mood, and I'm sure the general anesthesia had a lot to do with the lethargy as well.

Health & Support kind of a weird question maybe? re: getting period back Jan 12 2009
18:34 (UTC)

I don't have experience with losing and then re-gaining my period, but I am a woman (35 years old in May)...and the degree of bloating varies from period to period in my experience...so I would say that it's normal to feel more bloated some months and less so other times.

Especially for younger women, symptoms during and before your period can vary greatly. Definitely discuss this with your doctor, but know that what you're experiencing is totally normal, and as you continue to have more periods (congrats, btw!! It's not easy and you should be proud of taking the steps to get healthy! Laughing) , you'll get to be more familiar with what is "normal" for your cycles.

Health & Support this is probably tmi, but i need some help. Dec 22 2008

As far as getting an appointment on short notice, you may want to try an urgent-care clinic (or Planned Parenthood - they are great about protecting your privacy). They are set up to handle walk-ins and situations that require immediate medical attention, but are not quite severe enough to warrant a trip to the E.R.

If you're presenting with symptoms of a yeast infection, the doctors will take a swab to culture and see what is causing the infection, std or just plain yeast. Either way, they'll probably send you with an anti-biotic and possibly a cream to help with irritation.

You will also want to be sure to have plenty of yogurt to put the good bacteria back into your system, or take a probiotic suppliment. Yeast infections(and other vaginal infections) are caused by an imbalance in the bacteria that normally live in our bodies. Helping to restore the balance will help to alleviate symptoms and help you feel better faster.

Whatever the results, if you've been sexually active without using protection, you should inform your partner and they should be seen by a doctor to see if they need to be treated as well to prevent re-infection and/or spreading the infection to others.

I hope this helps you feel a little less anxious - keep us posted.

I'm trying hard to give myself a break and not get too upset about eating everything that's not nailed down lately, but it sucks that I am having such a hard time just being moderate with my indulgences...*sigh*....maybe I should just wait until after the holidays to try again.

Thanks!

I am treating today as sort of a 'baseline' day, to see where I'm at as far as my intake is concerned, and it's no wonder I've been feeling like I need to keep better track of what I'm eating - I'm over 2000 calories already Sealed. I should have skipped the grilled cheese and the cookie and just had the soup for lunch, I suppose.

I'll just keep things light for dinner and start again tomorrow....

So much for keeping it light...there was a box of Harry and David cookies for xmas from my Dad...Undecided

Tomorrow is another day though, and I didn't gain the weight overnight so I can't expect to lose it overnight either...

Foods Dark Chocolate Dec 15 2008

Original Post by personaltrainer87:

Dark chocolate has more cocoa solids and less sugar.

dark chocolate is also richer then milk and white chocolate, and most people cannot eat as much of it and feel satisfied with less.

Sugar free dark chocolate can be healthy, if it only contains cocoa solids, cocoa butter, and artificial sweetener.

Pure cocoa is PACKED with antioxidants, it has many health benefits, BUT like every thing else you need to eat it in the appropriate quantity

I buy a brand that is actually RAW cocoa, and the only ingredients in my favorite Mint flavor is :

Organic raw cacao butter, Organic raw cacao powder, Organic agave syrup (dark), Organic cacao nibs, Peppermint oil, Himalayan crystal salt.

Cocoa and cocoa butter has nothing bad in it, it is the stuff ADDED to it like sugar and milk solids and preservatives that are NOT healthy for you, and also the QUANTITY in which some people eat it is not healthy.

What brand is that? It sounds delicious, and I'm working at taking in less dairy so that looks like a great option for when I want some chocolate (which is most of the time - lol!). I also have a lactose-intolerant person on my winter gift-exchange list and this sounds like a great treat to send along.

Feel free to pm if you don't want to post the brand name publicly - Thanks!

Yep, you're doing fine Smile

You may want to wrap up in a blanket, that will hepl with the chill/shakey feeling you may have - the tea will help with that too.

Otherwise, just remember to breathe slow, deep breaths, try to keep relaxed and calm, and you should be feeling better soon.

Original Post by gi-jane:

Excess gas sounds like you're reacting badly to something you're eating.   One solution you could try is to reduce your dietary choices down to some very simple ingredients.  Too much fruit can cause digestion problems so cut out all the smoothies and fruit for a while.  Also any chips, luna bars etc.   Breakfast, for example... simple oatmeal.  Lunch... a sandwich and salad.  Supper... some vegetable broth, a bread roll.   For snacks, choose things like toast or crackers... nothing too rich.

I'm going to have to agree with gi-jane and most of the other pp's...it could be any number of things, so the best way to narrow it down would be to simplify your diet for a week or two, then gradually start adding back your 'regular' foods until the symptoms show up again. That is a standard protocol for identifying food allergies, and can help when any sort of digestive issues are occuring.  Taking a probiotic suppliment or eating yougurt can help too...

  1. Ham - just not a big fan...
  2. Green bell peppers - any other color of bell pepper is good, but I read somewhere that they are all the same plant, just varying stages of ripeness with green being the least ripe, so that might explain my aversion.
  3. Sardines - ICK! my husband loves tins of sardines in oil eaten with saltines, and I think that is just about the most disgusting thing EVER!!

Not so much before my period starts, but if my fiance and I have sex toward the end, my flow usually comes back a bit heavier for a good part of the day...I don't get much crampier because of intercourse, but I do notice sometimes that if I feel like I'm just a little crampy and we have sex, the cramps go away :)

For me, the size of our guest list is being limited by our budget, which in a way makes it easier to decide who to invite.

We're getting married August 16th, 2008 and having our reception in the same place {at the Renaissance Festival!!} and based on their reception package, we can afford to invite 50 people. We wouldn't want the wedding itself to be any bigger than that as we feel that the ceremony itself should be more intimate - I don't care if the person that sits 3 cubes over at the office witnesses my {future} husband and I pledge our love and devotion to eachother...but if they want to join us at the Festival that afternoon and lift a glass or two, then I say the more the merrier!

Keeping the ceremony intimate and the celebration more informal is what's working for us - best of luck with your planning and CONGRATS!!!

Hi Girls!

I took some "time off' form CC for a bit ~ I was getting too stressed out and just needed to eat 'normally' for a while. I'm happy to say that I didn't gain during my little break, and I still exercise regularly. I felt that even if I wasn't counting calories, doing 50 crunches a day couldn't hurt :)

Well, now IT"S ON...I'm getting fitted for my gown on May 16th, so I have 2 months to get down to the size I'm going to be and then try to maintain until the wedding in August ~ I won't be too upset if I lose more, but I don't want to have to spend too much on alterations ~ I'd rather keep more of the budget for 'fun stuff' :)

I learned at a workshop of sorts about 10 years ago and have been doing it ever since. It's been a couple of years, but I could whip up a pair of torches in an afternoon and be ready to rock by sundown :D

My useful 'thing' is spelling - also, remembering things. I am the walking dictionary and events calendar for my finace and I.

Special K 90 Calorie bars { I buy the varitey pack at Bj's - 45v bars for around $9}, some saltines left over from when I had 'that stomach thing', a Wasa MultiGrain Crispbread {45 cal. and LOTS of fiber!}, some mints, some green tea bags, and my indulgence - some salt & pepper kettle chips - I know they're HORRIBLE for me but I can actually stop myself at just 3 or 4 chips at a time and they are a major fried/salty stuff craving killer during TTOM ;)

I plateaued in January, struggled through and then decided to give myself February 'off'.  Now I'm back and I won't be getting on a scale until sometime next week as it's TTOM and i refuse :P as I'll not be happy with what I see, I'm sure. I did weigh periodacally during my 'month off' and didn't gain more than a pound or two.

Even though I wasn't tracking my food or activity, I still ate sensibly and exercised regularly - it's good to know I can 'do it' on my own and not gain, but I missed the support and I still have 50# to go, so here I am :)
