HI Everyone!
I'm on vacation in rural New Hampshire this week. It was 40 degrees when I woke up. Wow! This afternoon I walked down a pretty country road, and it's hilly here, so I got quite a workout. I'm trying to do a lot of painting and drawing outside, so I have a backpack with art supplies and I can draw the hills, flowers and nature.
Hello to all the new people! I live in NYC, like amaresmom - and the two of us are making plans to meet in person and walk together in Central Park when we get back from our vacations.

Hi Tempest,
I'm Teri from New York, and I am addicted to chocolate. Here's what I like:
 - Kashi oatmeal chocolate cookies, filling and 140 calories each.
- a good bar of dark chocolate, an expensive one, so I would feel too guilty to eat much of it at once, and I break off a square.
- Skinny Cow chocolate ice cream sandwiches, also 140 calories each.
I lost 20 pounds this summer but ate a tiny bit of chocolate EVERY DAY. Otherwise I eat regular foods but also in small portions.
I take a brisk 30 minute walk every day. I need to have my chocolate and eat it, too!

Welcome!

Hi all! Everyone is making good comments about the issue of clothes, and I'm finding this a quandry myself. I had an important appointment on Monday, and though my two-piece suit looked nice, it was 2 sizes too big for me. I could have done better. I've been holding off buying new clothes until I lose more weight - and I have a goal of 15 more, but I may end up buying one or two nice things off the sales rack in the interim.

I am not all a clothes horse, by the way. I am most comfortable in jeans and a nice shirt. After losing about 18 pounds this summer, I was more than happy to throw all my baggy pants away. That's motivation enough!

Hi everyone...i just got back from a nice long walk, and I sure do feel better when I get in my 30-40 minute walk...The last two days I had gone out for only a couple of short bursts (in addition to walking those cute dogs!) which really didn't do it for me,  but today was so pretty outside I walked north on 5th Av past the Empire State Building and then up to 42nd and over to Grand Central Station where I could take the subway home. It was just a little over 2 miles.
Olivia, I am doing my resistance band exercises to strengthen the back of my arms so they don't jiggle. I think it's helped my arms tone a bit. I have to do strength exercises, because I am 53, post-meno, and need all the bones and muscles I can still keep.

hey olivia i put a picture of my two dogs on my profile just for you...
vcooper...i spent my college years up around your area over at oberlin...
amaresmom...i'm not that hard core of a walker...we should meet in CP and take a short stroll sometime...i would love that!

Before dinner tonight I'm going to put on a raincoat and hat and walk with a friend north of here for a mile or so...As for what to do when it gets cold...I think I'll just put on my parka and mittens and go for it!

hey amaresmom, it's raining again here. when you first asked me what neighborhood i lived in, i hadn't realized at the time you were a fellow NYer and so i must have sounded like a complete idiot.  i've got friends in your neighborhood and we've walked the northern part of Central Park. it's so beautiful in that part of the park. sometimes i'll take the A or C train and then walk. I'm glad we have subways to take us home (when they're not flooded!)

Hey all, I walked after dinner last night over to a frozen yogurt place called Pinkberry (there's one at Columbia U also, amaresmom) and ordered a small 5 oz. serving with strawberries. Then I walked home. I calculated that I could actually walk off the calories I ate.

Hey amaresmom, I live in Greenwich Village, a neighborhood people have actually head of! I walked through the west village today over to the Hudson River Park where everyone walks along the shore. I'm fortunate to have lots of organized walking trails even in the midst of 8 million people.

Good point wlmich. And I agree that everyone's experience is the best guide. My husband is insulin dependent Type A diabetic, and his doctor told him that the 30 minute walk works best for his needs. But again his needs are different. Rock on that you walk 60 minutes!

hey vcooper. Yes, they have confirmed that it was a tornado that touched down in Brooklyn. Totally unheard of.
As the weather is much nicer today, with lower humidity, I plan on taking  my 30 min. walk later his morning.
BTW everyone, Duke Medical Center last month released a report indicating that their reserach shows that a 30 minute walk to be the optimal length. Interestingly, they found no benefit in a longer workout!

Wow! That was a bad night for the team. Talk about good (theirs) and bad pitching (ours)!
My guy Shelley Duncan (17) singled in the 8th but no runs.

Thanks shmoopy79! Is there a Yankee player whose number matches the weight he's hoping to gain? He can play!

And for everyone else, since I started this, we can get a little trading action going. If you lose weight and find a new player whose number matches your new goal, then you can switch players. For example, I am now Shelley Duncan, because I need to lose 17 pounds, but if I lose 4 more, well then I get to become A-Rod (13). Yipppee!

And, man, we all want to be Jeter (2).

I'm still here, and may I continue to say I'm still exhausted? After mapping my walk across the bridge this morning (using Goggle Pedometer), I see that the walk was 2.5 miles and that I burned 263 calories. That usually doesn't bother me, as that's a normal walk for me, but it's the heat and humidity! I'm now looking forward to Fall.
I just saw the news also and had no idea the storm this morning was that bad.

Hi zaitz3. I live in the Village and had an appointment in DUMBO at about 11, and I decided, what the heck, so I walked down to City Hall and then over the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge was packed.
The Yankees have done well against Toronto, and I look foward to the game tonight.

Thanks, rebepi, for stopping by and for the good wishes. See you in the playoffs.

I made this original post early this morning, and we had some impossible morning commutes here in NYC. So maybe this idea will pick up some momentum as the day goes on.

Okay here's my dramatic walking story from today. The hard rains this morning flooded the subways so the subways were either closed or delayed during the morning rush hour. The MTA (transit authority) announced that everyone should delay going to work. The busses were running, but because there weren't any trains, the busses were too full. That meant that all the taxis were taken also.
I had a professional appointment in Brooklyn across the East River scheduled for noon. I had to look dressy for the appointment.
With the subways out, the busses and taxis too crowded, the only option for most all New Yorker was to walk.
So I ended up combining exercise with work by walking downtown and then across the Brooklyn Bridge! It was about 3-4 miles. There were hundreds of us walking across the bridge in hot steamy weather, all in nice work clothes!
Fortunately the subways started running by the time I needed to come home.
I'm exhausted.

Greetings! It was a stormy morning here in NYC, but I plan to get out for my daily walk later this morning before it gets too hot.

Hi kiwistarfruit,
Before I was a New Yorker, I was a 5th generation Texan (and still am!). On bad weather days I like to go to a large indoor place such as a mall or a museum. Do you have any place like that where you live? I have found that vigorous vaccuming of my apartment counts as a short brisk walk!

Olivia, that dog is soooo cute! I have a big dog and a little dog. The big glamorous dog is a beautiful mix of chow, shepherd and rottweiler. She looks exactly like a big teddy bear. The little one is a cute fox terrier. So many people have dogs in New York now. They're great walking companions, of course. We have a lot of dog runs in the parks.
And, is it Vicki?, I'm so glad you had a good time here!

Hi. Thanks for asking! I walk around nearby parks, and sometimes I'll take the subway to Central Park and walk around there with millions of other New Yorkers. Sometimes I'll walk to Bryant Park which is 30 minutes north, so that's about a perfect two miles. Othertimes I'll walk to the busy South Street Seaport or just around the galleries of a museum.
Yes, it's very special, as it's a great pedestrian city.
I love dogs, and of course I have to walk my two every day!

Hi everyone.
I am new to the forums, and I have a particular interest in walking. At the end of May, I found myself at 161 pounds but I started controlling calories and then walking 30 minutes at a brisk pace every day. Now ten weeks later I'm at 142.5! That's the power of positive walking. I also started a diet and exercise journal and then a blog, and I think that helped a lot also.
I live in New York City so I have to walk, but I'm also confronted with some of the best food in the world. I have to walk very fast past my favorite pastry shops.
