The Lounge How did you know that you were in love? Dec 05 2007

I knew it was true love after we'd been married for 6 years with 4 kids and he was on his hands and knees cleaning up throw up from one of the kids for me after he'd been working all day and going to school.

Sure, I knew I loved him before that, but that was a definite indication that it was TRUE love and certainly going to last more than a few years.

BTW, that was 15 years ago. :)

Just jumping in here and addressing a few of the posts:

1-Definitely go see Enchanted. We went Thanksgiving Day with the whole fam damily, from Grandpa on down and everyone really liked it. I even had my 2 teenage boys go, and they liked it, too. There's no other princesses in it, no Little Mermaid, just references to other Disney movies. Amy Adams - the princess - was really amazing. Another good movie is Stardust. It may be in some local cheap theaters, I think it just came out on DVD, though. It's Christmas time - there's really a lot of good movies out there right now. Go online and just start watching the trailers, you should be able to find something that would fit your tastes.

2-jewels - I was having the same thoughts reading through this. I have a 14 yo daughter and she better not be thinking along these same lines as zeb. I don't even want to see Sweeny Todd. I love Johnny Depp, but know that this is definitely one I'll miss. I have enough other things to raise my blood pressure in my day-to-day life, thank you very much.

3-zeb - do your parents allow you to go to rated R movies? I'm very confused here. It seems like you've been raised very religious, and yet you go to rated R horror flicks? But no nudity, right?

Ya, I'm confused. Like jewels, not wanting to pick on you, but definitely confused.

The book "You on a Diet" addresses the whole HFCS thing very well. It's not just that it's high calorie, it fills you up with empty calories, your body doesn't process it like natural foods, and then you feel hungry a lot sooner, making you crave more of the stuff. It's a vicious cycle.

I like to eat a bowl of Cheerios in the morning with 1/2 a banana sliced on top. The banana gives me the sweetness that I'm missing from sugar.

dnrothx - Wait, are you making fun of people from Rigby???? Gollee gee, Rexburg is a whole 15 minutes away, of course the poor thing was homesick! As said previously, I am originally from Idaho Falls, I'm a transplant of sorts to Rigby . . . but it's still the birthplace of TV!!!!

Ever go to the ice caves just past the St. Anthony sand dunes? Those are AWESOME!! Sand dunes are a little crazy these days. Everyone around the world has heard how cool they are so they end up crashing into each other on their four wheelers and then getting life flighted. Why, oh why do people have to find out about our secret little corner here?

Wow! I just stumbled onto this forum. I had no idea! I think I've been way underestimating my hypothyroidism. I take my medicine. I feel fine. Weight doesn't come off. I was diagnosed when I was 32, 7 years ago. At the time of my diagnosis I was experiencing heart palpitations (that's what took me to the doctor), freezing all the time, very, very tired, and I had LOST 10 pounds without trying. So I've always figured that if I quit taking my medicine I would lose weight again - Not happening! I had heard that hypothyroidism would affect weight loss, but didn't think much of it since I had lost weight when my levels were virtually non-existent. Hmmmm . . . I'm going to have to rethink this for a few days. More calories, huh? It looks like I should eat between 1600 to 1700 a day. I have a hard time getting in 1200 some days.

Thanks everyone!

The Lounge Article on Gift Cards at the Holidays: What do you think? Nov 13 2007

I don't know if I agree with this. I think gift cards can be thoughtful gifts. One year for Christmas my sister gave me and my family gift cards to a restaurant and to a local movie theater. We had a great time taking the family to dinner and a movie. I also received a gift card for Home Depot when we were building our home. That was great. And I always love a gift card from Barnes & Noble, my friends and family know I love to read, but it's always hard to pick out a book for someone else that they'll like and/or haven't read already. Plus, bookstores don't really like returns.

I think I agree that gift cards from Wal Mart or Target or some store like those are a little on the lazy side. Though I have been known to give one to a teenage niece or nephew that I wasn't sure what exactly to get them. I would rather give them a gift card so they can buy something they'll actually use than some gift that will end up in the back of their closet never to see the light of day again. I'm too practical to just spend money on something that person wouldn't use.

I have never given my husband or kids gift cards, though. Oops! I take that back. One year for Christmas I gave each of my kids a $15 gift card to Hastings so they could pick out a favorite music album. My bad!

I forgot one more thing: when I have dry lips (and I live in a dry climate so that happens quite often) I'll put Carmex on them right before I go to bed. It seems to work better and stay on longer when I'm sleeping. In fact, I'll still feel it on when I get up in the morning.

Ok, this is something I actually know a little something about. My 15 yo son has had extreme dry skin since he was born. It's been diagnosed as atopic dermatitis. It is actually partly allergies. We've tried all sorts of things, some things work different for different people.
First of all, yes, go see your general doctor. I've found it amusing over the years that every doctor seems to see this dry skin thing as their own personal challenge. They may be able to help. It's a good starting point. They also usually have lots and lots of samples.
Secondly, dermatologists are probably the hardest doctor to see. There's always a long wait. You may want to just get your name in, and then cancel if things clear up by then by help of your doctor.
The thing that has helped my son the most is showers, yes showers. He has been told to shower 2 times a day, just 5 minutes, not too hot. Then lotion down immediately after - he uses the generic brand of Cetephil, you can get it at Wal Mart, for both his lotion and his wash in the shower (two different Cetephils). Don't dry the water off, pat yourself dry. You want the lotion to seal the moisture of the water in. When he was doing this his skin was completely healthy. Of course, he is a 15 yo boy, need I say more?
Good luck!

I don't even pretend to know anything about EDs, don't even know anyone close to me with one (that I know of). So take this for what it's worth . . .

Have you thought of DRINKING more of your meals? You know, Slim Fast, high calorie protein shakes, that sort of thing? I don't know how that would be on your teeth, you'd probably want them at room temperature, but maybe that would be easier for your stomach.

Just a thought, would like to help. My prayers and thoughts with you and your struggles.

My 8 y.o. daughter was always asking for them, I was continually telling her no. "All my friends have them". My reply? "Hmm". I don't think she's mature enough for me to explain to her that I think the way those dolls dress and wear their hair and make up should be an example of what she should be doing, even to a lesser degree, in the next couple years. She does know that I don't let her wear immodest clothes. She has quit asking. I have 5 kids, with a 6 1/2 year gap between the last two. I have been appalled at the difference in toys and attitudes in just those 6 1/2 years. Kids seem to EXPECT so much more. They have so many more toys. I mean, you went to a party and the girl got 9 Bratz dolls??!! I don't get it. These girls may not know what hookers or sluts are now, but by playing with these dolls, they are being told that this is acceptable for later in their life when they DO know what hookers and sluts are.

"Toys are toys and cartoons are cartoons" Huh? Have you ever watched South Park? Ever heard of "adult" toys?

I have bought my daughter Build A Bears. She loves them. The clothes are adorable, there's all sorts of outfits and they're not nearly as expensive as American Girl dolls.

Dreams are your subconscious working overtime while you're asleep. He's not necessarily cheating on you, but it's certainly something you're worried about.

Why again are you still engaged to someone who you have "caught him in lie after lie"?

Sorry, an old prude, I guess, but I've been married 21 years now and have always trusted my husband 100%. If you can't trust the man you're married to, I can't imagine it would be a very happy marriage.

Personally, I was Pippi Longstocking every year. Sexy? Definitely not. Cute and comfortable? Absolutely.

What happened to princesses and kitty cats?

Happy Halloween everyone!

First of all, I read your stats and 6'3" and 238 lbs is far from being huge. Secondly, if you see yourself as unattractive, that's where you need to start--with yourself. I highly doubt if anyone sees you as nearly as unattractive as you do. You are your own worse critic. Since I don't know you nor see any pictures of you, I can't really say, but I do know human nature enough to notice that beauty truly does come from the inside.

Whenever I see "beautiful, perfect" people, I tend to think they are more absorbed in themselves and probably not real interested in others. Probably a bad generalization, but so be it.

Find a good hobby, read good books, look for the good in others and more importantly look for the good in you. Make a list of 10 things (yes, TEN) that you like about yourself. Post it somewhere where you can read it everyday.

If none of this helps, please get professional help before you truly do something harmful to yourself. Know that we're all here helping you and cheering you on.

I totally know how you feel. My mom was a great cook, too and I've learned from her. My office keeps a drawer full of candy bars at my constant disposal. And I, too, have a huge sweet tooth - I used to anyway. What changed it for me? I read You: On a Diet, by Dr. Oz and Roisum. I went by what they said. It makes total sense. I quit eating all high fructose corn syrup - it's in everything so that's hard, but you figure out what you can and can't eat - I quit eating all processed flours, only 100% whole wheat, and other things, but what they tell you is the more High fructose corn syrup you eat, the more your body craves and it's in a very easy to read way to understand it. They explain that food cravings are NOT just in our head, they are in our system according to what we've been putting into our system.

When I started it I worried that I wouldn't be able to go without the pies, cookies, candies, etc because I just enjoyed them way too much. I'm only 11 days in and haven't even been tempted. I'm not saying I'll not have a piece of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving, but I'll make sure it's a very small piece. And I really don't think I'll be tempted on Halloween. Another thing they tell you to do is to keep an "emergency" snack. When you want to reach for the candy bar, reach for your carrot sticks, or celery or nuts or something.

I did go through a day of withdrawals - a sort of detoxification if you will. That's probably part of my motivation, I don't want to feel like that again.

Good luck!

I saw the funniest commercial the other day. It was advertising medication for women losing weight - sorry, can't remember the brand. Anyway, it showed a pencil drawing of an overweight man and woman who wanted to lose weight. She says something like my husband lost weight - the pencil drawing shrinks down to a normal size man - and this is what happened to me - it shows a pencil drawing of her still the same size, but her boobs pretty much disappeared. It was hilarious! Why oh why can men lose weight sooo much easier????

If I see it again I'll make a note of the brand it was. Maybe it would help . . . or maybe it's just a false claim. Who knows? Entertaining commercial at least!

I keep watching this thread hoping there's some good news. I'm not even sure what to say except your strength is so admirable. You, Chris, your family are all in my thoughts and prayers. I know that you share my beliefs. Please know that we were put on this earth to have challenges and grow from them. It does not seem fair, and hopefully when it's all said and done we can look back and see what we gained. No matter where Chris is, he is being watched - the Lord is with him. There is no doubt.

clarkplace123- I soo feel for you as well. I live in southeastern Idaho. A few years ago we moved to Salt Lake City, not as big as where you are, but still quite a bit bigger than any town in Idaho. I HATED standing in lines, waiting in traffic (we were there the year before the Olympics and there was construction EVERYWHERE, and if it wasn't on that street that week, it was there the next!), and the people! They're everywhere! I'm so used to going into the grocery store and always knowing someone (actually a lot of someones), there I didn't know anyone, maybe once or twice ran into someone I knew. But the lines of people were the killer. Anything government took a minimum of 2 hours! Here in Idaho, you walk in, if you have to wait 5 minutes you leave complaining - well, I don't anymore, I just am so happy I'm back in Idaho.

I did notice, however, that the longer I was there the more people I did get to know, that we were still in our own little community, it was just a smaller radius than in Idaho. There were conveniences, too. We could go watch so many more cultural events and sporting events. That was nice.

What town did you move from? How long were you there? What caused you to move?

I've got an 8-year-old whose birthday was Monday. She got a $20 gift card for Wal Mart and I had the "pleasure" to go find something with it. All her friends have a lot of Bratz dolls and that's what she wanted. She already has 1 or 2, but she got them as gifts. I said no to the Bratz dolls, but when we were looking at them she was saying she needed a boy. I found it very interesting that the boys came across as nice, completely dressed, all American boys. No skanky clothes there. So it's ok to sexualize young girls but not the boys? She had a little outfit for one of them one time (I guess they're all little) and a thread started unraveling. There went the whole outfit !!!!! He he.

I also hate how the feet come off for the shoes. They're these footless, weird-shaped things.

BTW my daughter ended up getting Littlest Pet Shop toys, also misshaped toys of animals this time.

I've worked for a personal injury attorney and coming from that angle, yes he can sue for his back. No, we would not take the case because as the old saying goes, you can't get blood from a turnip. Now, that's not saying someone else wouldn't take the case, but where you're only 18 I'm assuming you have no house, no money, no assets in general (OK, maybe an iPod and a PlayStation and some clothes). What's he going to take if he sues? Each state does have different laws. In Idaho there's a 2 year statute of limitations. That means he has 2 years to sue. Some states it's 1 year, others 3 years etc.
I would call an insurance company immediately. If you were on your parent's plan before call them, they may still cover this. Whatever insurance company plan you were on - call them. I just recently bought a used car and when I called my insurance company they asked what day the policy should be in effect, even though I was already driving it - meaning did they need to go BACK a few days.
Another thought, the car may have still been covered by the dealership/individual that owned it previously. That would be an arguable point from a legal standpoint. You may want to check there as well, especially if it's a dealership.
Good luck and let us know what happens! Edit: As far as the court date goes, if you bring proof of insurance with you and proof of the date and time of purchase then they may let it off with a warning, just depends on the judge, but definitely bring proof of insurance with you there showing that you definitely got it immediately after and that was always your intention.
