I'm having the hardest time movitating too!!!!  Especially on the weekends, it's so easy to just spend the day doing nothing.  I have a pool, so I've been trying to swim, but I end up just kind of floating around instead.

I need some way to make myself go to the gym after work.  Most days I just feel so tired, I want to go home and put my pjs on instead!  And going before work is not an option - my commute is almost an hour and I'd need to leave my house way too early if I were going to make the work out worth it!

I'm hoping that just having to post my weight every week will help me get moving.  I'm also going to try and get my husband to start going to the gym (he needs to loose a couple pounds too!) and am hoping that having a workout buddy will make a difference.

I think I'm only going to lose 5 pounds.  Since I've already lost some weight I am focusing on maintaining a 500 calorie deficit for now but I might need to mix things up if things start to slow.

Good luck everyone!  You can do it!  Don't give up!

Congratulations on passing your "plateau"!  That's very exciting.  Keep up the great work!

I was so excited when I stepped on the scale today!  Now I'm just hoping I don't blow it all this weekend (friend's wedding on Saturday......).

Went horseback riding last night for an hour, then came home and went for a short swim.  I walked from the train to work this morning (about a mile) and plan to walk back tonight.  Might also have to walk from the train to home, which is about 2 miles, so that would be a good start for the weekend!

I had a HUGE dinner last night (my mother-in-law is in town and cooked for us....) so I have a lot to make up for today.  I did go for a swim after dinner though, so at least I didn't just plop myself in front of the tv for a change.
The Lounge Help, my husband is overcontrolling and insecure. Need help on how to deal. Jul 09 2008

I had a friend who went through a very similar thing with her husband.  He was very controlling, never "let" her go out with her friends, things like that.  Eventually it got to the point where she was completely supporting him because he couldn't hold down a job, and she didn't say a word.  She was afraid to leave him because she felt guilty about leaving him on his own, and because she wasn't sure that she would ever find someone else.  She was scared that she would be alone, and she thought it was better to be with someone who treated her badly then to be with no one at all.

Long story short - they seperated and divorced about 2 years ago and she has never been happier.  She is now in a relationship with someone who trusts and respects her.  She tells me all the time how she never realized that this is what a relationship is actually like.

It may be your husbands issues that he needs to deal with, but you cannot let yourself stay in a relationship where you are not trusted.  I obviously don't know all the details, and I would never presume to tell anyone I know the "right" answer about this sort of situation, but I do know that if you are not happy, and things are not getting better you need to take a step back, do some serious thinking, and then make the choice that is right for YOU.

Hi guys.  In the past 2 years (since my wedding) I have gained about 15 pounds. While I do not consider myself overweight I do wish I could get back to my pre-wedding weight!  The past few months has been my biggest weight gain, about 10 pounds.  My clothes are starting to get tight (to be perfectly honest....I can't wear anything other then skirts to work right now because I can't get any of my pants on....) and I just feel uncomfortable in my own skin.

Now my brother is getting married on August 10, and I'm a bridesmaid.  I've definitely put on weight since I got measured for my dress, and I'm starting to get nervous that I won't be able to fit into it!

My biggest issue with my weight loss (other then that I LOVE sweets) is the motivation factor.  After working all day I can't get myself to go to the gym, and it's nearly impossible to get myself out of bed to do it early in the morning.  I've started walking from the train to work (about 1.5 miles each way) but that's not enough.

I'm hoping that you guys will be able to give me some ideas, tips, or at least a little motivation.

Tonia-  The worst part about that 3800 lunch was that the place I went to had lots of healthier options.  It was purely my own fault.   As for breaking your plateau, maybe you should try a brand new type of exercise?  Give your body a little wake up call.  Don't worry, you'll get past it!

Drinks last night turned into four beers.  BUT they ordered "bar food" and I didn't eat a bite.  Waited until I got home to eat dinner.  So at least I controlled myself there.

My goal today is to have a healthy lunch and dinner.  I need to detox after my beers last night, and I can't get to the gym because I have to study (exam for work tomorrow).  So nothing but good stuff going into my body today.  Already have a plumb warming up on my desk.  I hate eating cold fruit.

Anyway, hope everyone has a healthy day.

Di- Great job on the 5 pounds!  You're almost there!!!!

Ohio- Sounds like you've been having the kind of days I had yesterday.  Let's put it all behind us and get ourselves back in gear!!

Went to the gym last night and walked/ran (mostly walked) 5 miles.  Weighed myself and I'm UP 1.2 pounds since I started.  *sigh*

Starting off the day better then yesterday.... If I can just make it through lunch with a salad and some soup I think I'll be back on track.  No gym for me tonight though, the folks at my new job are going out for drinks after work so I'm going to go (need to meet people here!!!).  But luckily my ride home (my husband) will be leaving around 7:30, so I can't stay very long.  I'm going to limit myself to two drinks, and have a light supper.  Hopefully that way I can stay in my calorie range.

Good luck today everyone!!!  Sounds like we all need it lately! :)

I just completely pigged out at lunch.  Nachos (with the works) and chicken quesidillas.  Then I got back to my desk and ate an entire pint of blueberries.  At least it's fruit.... but I just calculated my calories for the day and I'm already at...........3800.  I feel so gross right now.

Definitely hitting the gym, but unfortunately I can't go for the 4 hours it would take me to make up for lunch........

Hope everyone is having a better day then I am.  :(

Sounds like everyone had a good weekend.  I managed to stay away from the pizza, but I did get a NJ bagel.  I just can't resist!!!!!!

Went swimming on Saturday for about an hour, but followed it up with a BBQ so pretty much cancelled each other out.

Have to jump right into work today, but I'll try and catch up later.

PS-  Check out this site, some yummy looking snacks!!

So my one drink last night turned into 5.....  does it make it better that I drank light beer?...... Probably not.  Did my calorie intake just now and I was at just under 2000.

Starting off my day with a nice mixed berry breakfast though!  I get out of the office at 1:00 and am going to hit the gym before driving to NJ to see my folks. (My cousin had a baby boy!)  That will be a challenge for me because NJ makes the best pizza and the best bagels (neither of which are good in MA) so I'm going to have to try really hard not to eat it all.

Ohio-  Don't say "only 1 3/4 inches"- that's great!  That's 1 3/4 inches less then you were before, and you're that much closer to your goal.  Keep up the good work, and be strong this weekend!

CC-  I think you're about where you want to be with the calories.

Basically (I think) the way it works is you want to burn 500 calories a day more than you take in.  If you did that every day, you would lose a pound a week.  Healthy weight loss is 1 to 2 pounds a week.  So if you're burning too many calories more than you eat then you could be damaging your body.  Your metabolism will also slow down because it won't have the calories it needs to work.  And that will slow down the actual weight loss.

But if you're taking in 1500, burning 1600 with "normal" stuff, and 300 with exercise you're at -400 calories for the day.  So that's right where you want to be.  Obviously you would have to figure out what you're "normal" calorie burnoff is for a day to really figure out how much you should be taking in.  I think this site has a place to do that, but I can't remember where.

Obviously I'm not an expert on this, but from everything I've read, that's what I understand of the whole process.

Edit-  Go to "Tools" "Allowance".  It has a form to fill out and it will estimate how many calories you need to take in each day based on your level of activity and your goal date.  And "Expenditure" will calculate how many calories you burn just during your average day.

Just found this tidbit of information:

"Keep in mind that one of the basic rules of thumb for healthy weight loss is to lose only 1-2 pounds per week. To lose one pound per week, you will do activities each day that burn an additional 500 calories per day, totaling to 3500 over 7 days. Another approach is to split the calories between exercise and food - eating 250 less and burning 250 more calories each day."

Tonia-  You have the concept of net calories down.  And you do need to burn more calories in a day then you take in.  But don't forget to account for the calories that your body naturally needs to do its thing.  If you don't take in enough calories to handle that as well it could get dangerous.  Obviously, I don't know the specifics on this, but if your concerned you should definitely ask your doctor.  I know that it isn't good to burn too many more than you take in, because rather then burning fat your body could start burning muscle as well.  You should figure out how many calories your body burns in a normal day (without exercise) and go from there.  I think the "normal" person burns something like 1600 a day just being alive (but I could be totally wrong on that).  Which means that with your numbers you were negative 1207, which I'm pretty sure isn't good for you if you do it every day.

But again, don't take my word for it because I'm definitely NOT an expert.  I'm sure there's research out there though.

Marie- Great job on the 5 pounds!

That being said, I just had a ridiculously good turkey sandwich for lunch.  Unfortunatly it had mounds of swiss cheese on it.  But I had a salad instead of fries!

CC1170- You should try brushing your teeth right after you finish eating at night.  That helps me sometimes.  Makes you feel guilty if you eat, because you just brushed!  And if you have to eat at night make it something like an apple or a banana.  That way there is only one and it's gone, but it takes a while to eat.  And it's good for you!

Tonia-  That sounds like some machine!!!  Where did you find that??  I don't have any weight loss gadgets.... which might be my problem!

Had a good workout at the gym yesterday.  Didn't do any weights, but I ran 1 mile, walked 1 mile, did the elptical for 20 minutes and the bike for 20 minutes.  Feel SO sore today, but it's worth it!

Biggest challenge for today- going out for two of my friend's birthdays.  I've told myself I'm allowed one drink and that's it.  Helps that I have to leave early (or else my ride home will go without me!).

Have a great day everyone!

cnpaterson-  I'm kind of the same way.  I'm not a big person either, but I've gained at least 10 pounds in the past year and I can feel it in my clothes.  I want to lose the weight but lot of it is more the need to tone up.  That's where the inches really come off.  Are you doing weight training as well as running/sports?  I also really noticed a difference when I was doing pilates (which I need to get back into).

Went to the gym last night!  Ran two miles (but with a walking break between each mile.  I blame the lack of Ipod....).  And walked another mile.  20 minutes on the bike and then lifted upper body.  I am so sore today!  But it feels good to be back into it.  Plans to go again tonight.

Managed to stay away from the Oreos after dinner too!

Have a good day everyone.

Don't know how many calories were in the Oreos.  I have to look tonight and figure out what a serving is.  Wasn't clear on the counter here.

No reason for not having a scale except we never bought one.  I am a little afraid that if I have one I'll get obsessed and weigh myself a thousand times a week.  Having it only at the gym keeps me better about having a "weigh in" every week, and then I can't obsess about it.  We probably should get one though, because my husband and I both need to get some sort of motivation!

Di-  It amazes me every time I read your posts how much you get done in a day!  Having summers off must be so great.  The weekend comes and I know I should be doing things around the house but instead I end up sitting on the couch watching tv because I'm to tired!

I'll let you all know how the gym goes tonight.  My goal is to lift (upper body) and run 2 miles.  I want to start of slowly since I haven't done anything in a while.....

CC1170- I'm the same with the calories.  I need at least 1500 to function.  Otherwise I'm just miserable to be around.

Ohio45- A little belated, but congratulations on getting past your goal.  Isn't it amazing how great that it feels to see a weight below your goal?

Tonight I'm heading to the gym for the first time in WEEKS.  I am actually so excited to go.  Hopefully I'll be as motivated by the end of the day as I am right now.  I did forget my Ipod though, which completely bums me out.  Somehow it's so much easier to run when I'm listening to music.  Oh well, hopefully I can get a treadmill close to the tv!  In addition to my first gym trip in ages, it will also be my first weigh in....  don't have a scale at home, so I only get to weigh myself at the gym.  A little nervous because the clothes have been a big snug lately (more than usual!).

Started off eating well for dinner last night.  Then spotted the Oreo cookies (left behind from my in-laws) and ate some.  Okay, like 6.  Bad bad bad!

Hope everyone has a good day.

Have to run- just wanted to jump in quickly.

I copied and pasted Amy's plan (so that I could have it to print out) so here it is:

Week #1 - Net Calories - Each day (or at the beginning of the week for the whole week, Sunday to Saturday) post what you think your NET calories should be/want to be

Eg.  1,700 calories consumed - 300 calories burned from exercise ONLY (not normal calorie expenditure) = 1,400 NET for the day.

Week #2 - Exercise - Each day post what you are going to do for the day in terms of exercise

Eg.  Monday goal - 45 minutes elliptical trainer + 30 minutes weight lifiting

Week #3 - Water Consumption & Net Calories - Post how much water you consume in a day~~I think it's supposed to be somewhere near 8-10 8oz glasses a day--- for the net calories, see #1.

Week #4 - Food Diversification - Eating from the food groups and posting how close you stay to your goals  (this will be a little time consuming, but worth it, if you tend to go over with salt, fat, carbs, etc)

Eg.  Protein % of daily, Carbs - % of daily, Fat - % of daily, total mg of Sodium, gms of cholesterol, and alcohol consumption  (you can cut and paste your analysis page onto the forum, and delete what you don't need)

Week #5 - How many days in a row can you go?  You post at the beginning of the week what you are going to do.....

Eg.  for this week, I am going to try and stay withing my net calorie goals for 6 days straight, or I am going to try and exercise 5 days straight, or do 100 pushups every morning for 7 days in a row, or I am going to drink ALL my water for 6 days straight, or I am not going to consume alcochol for 7 days straight....We all have committments, family, etc, so I thought it best to give a choice, in case we are on vacation, family parties, etc.... you should still be able to acciomplish SOMETHING good for yourself for a bunch of days in a row!

Week #6 - Net Calories & exercise - again, post at the beginning of the week or each day.

Week #7 - Exercise and Water - see above

Week #8 - Surprise!!!

I took the framework for this from another challenge that started May 30 and is going to end this weekend.  I participated, and I feel that it really helped me lose the 10lbs. (credit goes to undertherainbow..... she is amazing:)

Post your name if you want to participate, or if you think we should just do what we're doing and I'll move this over to another thread..... I just think that you ladies on this particular thread would do well with something like this, because we all need a little structure, but need to diversify as well so as not to get obsessed or bored.  If you all want, we will start on Sunday July 29, 2007.  Post your current weight (if you dare)~~~~ NO Excuses!!

Hi everyone!  New job started yesterday, so far so good, but just a lot of paperwork.  I hope I get into real "work" soon!

Yesterday was a pretty healthy day (compared to lately anyway).  Walked to and from the office from the train (instead of getting on another train).  It's only about a mile and half each way, but it's more than I've been getting lately.  Also walked this morning!

Dinner was a antipasto type salad (although there was a potato on the side.  You're right Amy- the Irish and the Scottish love their potatoes!).  No dessert.

Feeling pretty good about myself today!

Have to run, don't want to get caught on the internet on my second day.

Congrats Amy on the 10 lbs!

Yeah- the "something light on the side" was a baked potato.  I don't know how much more I can take of this!!!  Luckily they leave on Sunday and I can (hopefully) get back to normal.  The other plus side is that I find myself eating super-healthy during the day because I know it's all going to hell when I get home!!!!

Di- I have a desk job.  Pretty much always sitting.  My workouts have been basically non-existent for the past week or so.  I try to go for walks during lunch, or walk to the further train station.  But other than that I haven't been getting much in.  I feel like I need to spending time with the inlaws.  That's another thing that should get back to normal once they leave.  There's a pilates class that I like to take on Wednesday nights, but I haven't been since they've been here.  Can't wait to get back to that!!

And great job on the run Di!  Four miles has been my max running distance, but I really want to work my way up.

I used to weigh myself every day but I've started only doing it once a week.  I fluctuate so much (like everyone else) that it would just make me frustrated when it was such a drastic difference.  I feel like weighing in once a week gives me a more accurate picture.  Although I do miss those "skinny" days on the scale!

Today is my last day at this job- starting a new one tomorrow.  Really excited (my job now was completely dead end) but also a little nervous.  Might forget about the family tonight and just go for a run anyway to work off some of that nervousness.

Okay, off to finish up the last of the stuff on my desk.  Hope everyone has a great day.

The visit with the in-laws went well, thanks.  However, it's still going.... They're from Scotland so there here for another week (his mother has been here for THREE already, and his father for a week).  They're great, but it will be nice to have the house to ourselves again.  And they eat so badly.  I just talked to my husband and my dinner choices (mother-in-law is cooking) are mac-and-cheese or spagetti with beef meatballs.

Steph- start of slowly with the exercising.  It will get easier with time and you don't want to go too hard in the beginning and end up hurting yourself.  When I started running I only did 1/4 mile at a time and slowly built it up.  Now I'm at 4 miles and it feels great!  It's also good to run shorter distances and throw in some hills and sprints.  Mix things up!

Have a good night everyone!

I just want to echo everything that everyone has said as well as add this.  You commented that you were afraid your boyfriend wouldn't find you attractive if you didn't have a flat stomach, and might break up with you.

If anyone EVER breaks up with you because they don't think you look "perfect" than thank your lucky stars that you are rid of him because he is NOT a good person.  Love yourself for who you are.  That's all that matters.  When I was your age I had friends that made me feel like I needed to be a certain way.  The best thing that ever happened to me was losing those friends.

Tonia- about getting rid of everything bad for you (like sweets and alcohol).  I've tried that before and it absolutely didn't work for me.  Maybe I just don't have enough self control.  But when I stopped eating sweets/chips, I found that I would binge on them like crazy any time I gave in.  But when I just allowed myself a little bit every so often I was able to control how much I ate.  That's what I try to do now.  For example, if I "need" something sweet, I'll take two cookies out of the package, and then put the package away in the cabinet.  That way it's out of sight and will actually take some effort to get to it, and give me more time to think about what I'm doing.  As for alcohol....if you figure out a good one for that let me know!  :)

Thanks for all the words of wisdom everyone!  I need all the motivation I can get.....

Had a horribly unhealthy weekend.  Don't even want to think about it.  But I did do a lot of swimming yesterday, so hopefully that helped balance it out at least a little.....

Amyb-  I got married last July and the best advice I can give you is RELAX.  I (like you) started freaking out a few weeks before the wedding.  (I actually had a recurring nightmare where my bridesmaids didn't show up.  Which obviously didn't happen!).  Lots of things happened that I couldn't change (like my husband decided to change the pattern of the kilts he and the groomsmen were wearing AFTER I'd already coordinated the flowers and bm dresses to match the first pattern.....) but everything worked out in the end.

Invitations are ALWAYS cheesy.  That's the nature of them.  Believe me, no one is going to look at them and think anything other than "oh, look!  I'm invited!".  About the dress- if the woman that's hemming it can't do the bustle, find someone who can.  I promise, there is someone out there that can do it!  And there's certainly nothing wrong with taking it to a different person then the one that did the hem.  About the party- if your sister is insisting on having a luncheon, tell her that you'll do it but ONLY if it's 10 people or less, and is seriously a lunch, and no presents.  That will make them happy, but it will take the "party" feel away from the whole thing, and be less stressful for you.

It sounds dumb, but a good thing to do is to sit back and just take a deep breath (and the massage idea sounds good too!).  You've already finished so much for the wedding, and you don't want to let the issues get in the way of enjoying the planning.   In the end all that matters is that you're there and your fiance is there.  The rest is all extra.

Hope everyone has a great and healthy day!

Hi everyone!

Wow Di, it sounds like you burn a lot of calories just doing your day!!  I sit at a desk all day and sometimes feel like I can see my legs getting bigger....  :)

I did manage to have a healthy breakfast and a somewhat-healthy lunch, so I'm on track for today.  Now I just have to avoid eating badly for dinner, which will be hard because the in-laws are in town and couldn't find a vegatable if it hit them in the face.

I am getting out of work at 3:00 though, and should be able to get in a walk and/or a swim before dinner, so that will be good.

Just looked back at some of the old posts and saw the "consequence" strategy.  I love it!  Did that work for anyone?  I think I might give it a try....

Hi everyone!  I'm new to this site, and I'm hoping it can help me get rid of the extra 10 (okay, maybe 11 or 12....) pounds that I've been carrying around.  I managed to get fit for my wedding a year ago, but here I am now, above where I was when I started back then!!

Basically my problem is that by the time I'm done with work I'm just too tired to hit the gym.  And my commute is too far to go in the morning.  I need motivation more than anything.

I also have a big sweet tooth.... if there is anything around to eat, I will eat it!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying out this site.  Hopefully it can help!
