Weight Loss Weight going up the scale~ Jan 31 2009
19:19 (UTC)

I agree with Sonny. I have made the decision to only weigh myself once a month..possibly every six weeks because my weight keeps going up. However, I can see by looking in the mirror that I am trimmer than I was 4 weeks ago. My goal is to drop a size by my 31st birthday in March. That way, I can concentrate on changing my shape, and not losing weight. I guess I know in the back of my head that I am gaining muscle, but seeing a higher number discouraged me.

Just don't give up. Keep exercising and counting your calories. Eventually your body will cooperate with  you.

Sugar Free instant Jello pudding has saved me from binging many a time. I try not to eat it a lot just because I am weary of some sugar free items, but it does the trick especially if you are trying to cut down on sugar.

I just read in Shape that there was a study of women who had a large amount of weight to lose. After 8 months the average weightloss for those who ate a 500-600 calorie breakfast was 40 lbs, while the others who ate a small breakfast only lost 8 lbs. I thought that was interesting.

Mafabo please do not give up. The information about your deficit is correct. You may need to adjust your workouts so that your deficit is lower or higher depending on what you are doing. I am having the same problem, and have before. However, I am commited to continue to track everything that I eat. It is important that we are honest with ourselves about what we are eating. I am 5 foot 7, and weight 253 lbs as of this morning, however I go to the gym 4-5 days a week. It is frustrating because I am literally an athletic fat person. However when I really sit down and analyze things, I do need more veggies, and I need to stop eating at night. I also have sugar with my tea, and I need to cut that down.

Just sit down, and be honest with yourself and make small changes. You will get there, but don't give up. From my experience I usually start to see results after I give up, and then I have to start all over. Your body has to adjust and it is going to take longer than a couple of weeks. Try to set a goal such as how you will feel in 2 months rather than worrying about fluctuations in the scale.

Weight Loss Weight gain after more exercises Jan 19 2009

I was actually about to post the same thing. I have been exercising for a while, but regularly since the end of December. I have also been tracking my calories. Yes, some days I go over, but for the most part I am at the gym 4-5 days a week, doing mainly cardio. The scale keeps creeping up, and it is really discouraging. I am interested to hear the reasoning for this as well.

Trader Joe's has a blueberry green tea that is delicious. I put a little sugar in it, but it has a lot of taste on it's own. I definitely recommend if you have one in your area.

Okay, I just got back from the gym. I did intervals on the elliptical for 40 minutes, and I was sweating within the first 9. I also increased my water intake. Thanks again for the help everyone!

Everyone, thank you for all of your help. I am going to try to concentrate on increasing intensity on my intervals, and I will try to get in more water as well. I feel like I drink enough, but I should probably increase my intake with the exercise.

One more question, typically how long should the intervals be? Right now I would say that I do them for 2-3 minutes, but I definitley think that I should increase the intensity. I will try that for the next few days.

Actually, I would say that it is colder sometimes depending on how many people are there. I think that they may not turn the heat up because it is a little more crowded this time of year.

Foods What do you buy from Trader Joes? Jun 17 2008

Trader Joes: Eggs, they just taste better there. I also love the humus, guacomole(avacado's number), and soy cheese

Whole Foods: The yellowfin tuna salad from the deli, the salad bar, and sometimes a vegan chocolate chip cookie. I am not a vegan, but they are fabulous!

Sometimes I take a walk during my lunch break. I go to the gym, but it does take time to get to the point where you like it. However once you get into the groove of things, you will probably start to like it. Exercise makes you feel better mainly because you have accomplished something.

It is really just a matter of finding something that you enjoy so that you don't get bored.

I personally wash my face in the morning to clear out any oil from that night, and then wash it again after the workout due to sweating. I also have been more aware of touching my face during and after my workouts. My gym has Purell dispensers now, but unfortunately there is a lot of bacteria on the equipment. This can cause acne if you touch your face. I am especially aware of this because we do tend to touch our faces when we are sweating, etc.
Foods Calling all you sweet-tooths out there! Jun 03 2008

I have three things that have saved me from sweet tooth sabotage:

1. Quaker flavored rice cakes. The peanut butter chocolate ones have little tiny chocolate chips that give them just enough sweetness, and I believe that they are only 60 calories. I was skeptical at first, but they are really good, and if you have two, who cares?

2. Sugar free chocolate instant jello-pudding with light cool whip. Since it is made with milk, it fills you up, and is very low in calories. It is so good!!!! Plus it is really easy to make. You just whisk it and put it in the fridge for 5 minutes.

3. Blueberries-plain and simple, but they are so so good.

I can fee your pain. I used to be a jelly bean fanatic, however now whenever I pass them at the store, I am like "is the extra weight worth the jelly beans?" and I keep it moving.

Good luck!

I had a similar situation recently. I was walking into my apartment building (after leaving my body pump class) and slipped on some black ice, landed on my knee, and twisted my ankle. I had other injuries as well (elbows, tailbone, back..you get the picture) Well, I am happy to report that three weeks later I am back to my normal self. My doctor had suggested that I just take a week off, however that is not an option for me right now. I just did the elliptical trainer, and light weights.

I feel great! What a difference exercising can make before and durining the recovery process!
Vegetarian Embarassing topic- gas Feb 03 2008

Not to be graphic, but if you have gas, you probably need to take a poop. I will be honest, but before I started eating vegetarian (or more fruits and vegetables for that matter) I would always try to hold in my gas, and I did not have as many bowel movements. However now I go # 2 pretty regularly, and I feel so much better. I know that it may be uncomfortable to do in a public bathroom, or at work, but if you get it out quickly and flush, no one will know what you are doing :)

Pooping, it is always an uncomforable subject, however it is so essential to eliminating the things that your body does not need..lol.

Hey Everyone! I have been trying vegetarianism for about a week and today I had my first falafel sandwich and it was so delicious. I had it in a whole wheat pita with hummus, pico, spicy sauce, falafel, and whatever the yummy white sauce on top is. I am definitely going to have another one before the week is out.

Corvaequeen, eggs are actually not fetuses unless they are fertilized. In that case, there would be a baby chicken in the egg when you eat it open. Although Vegans do not eat eggs, vegetarians can and do. I guess it all depends on individual preference.

I haven't read the book, but consistent cardio, a regular ab routine (10 minutes/4 days a week), and watching yoru carb intake (as in no candy or white bread) should do it.

Weight Loss What is going on? Jun 30 2007
18:49 (UTC)
I can definitely understand your frustration. I don' think that you are eating enough because I eat anywhere between 1800 and 2200 calories a day, however that is with exercise. Make sure to verify how many calories that you need because your body needs the calories for energy. Otherwise, your weight will not budge. I just got off of a 2 month plateau because I was not eating enough calories..probably around 1000. When I bumped them up based on what cc said I needed, my body started to respond, and I have lost 6 lbs.

It is more difficult than just cutting calories and exercising unfortunately. You have to just kind of find the right balance. Trust me, I was so scared that I would gain weight, but as long as you are getting the calories from the right foods, your body should respond.

I was not a big fan of the treadmill at first, but I have had good results with just walking and jogging at a moderate pace. Now I alternate the treadmill with the elliptical just so that I can change things up.

Thanks for the advice.

You definitely need to talk to someone about this. You might try to see if there are any boards online or websites for eating disorders. The fact that you realize that this is a potential problem is a good sign and a huge first step. Hang in there, but try to fight the urge in the meantime.

Congratulations! I have had the same struggle with feeling like I was eating so much. I guess the difference before is that now the extra calories are healthy foods that my body needs. I actually broke out of my 2 month plateau today thanks to the help of everyone on this site. Who knew that losing weight was so scientific?

Thank you for your help. I just started interval training last week, so I am glad to hear that it is beneficial. I am looking forward to seeing what results come over the next few months. Also, thanks for the advice on strenghth training. I am definitely going to continue.

btw, my question did ask if I should give the strength training a rest.
