| I have one simple rule...
If I can't count it, I can't eat it If it's something I absolutely have to have, I'll check online to see how many calories it has and only eat how much I can squeeze into my allowed calories for the day. |

| I have always had larger thighs, until recently... they are now 3 inches smaller than they've EVER been (even in high school).
What's changed? About six months ago the headache specialist gave me an upper body workout routine to strenthen my shoulders to help reduce the stress on my head and neck. I noticed that all the exercises you listed focus on the lower body... that was what I was doing up until now. |

| Don't give up!
We all have up's and down's. Just keep doing the things you know you need to and soon enough you will be back "up" again... and so very glad that you didn't slide too far backwards. Keep logging, keep exercising, keep up the routine. The motivation will return. Remember: the only way to reach your goal is to keep moving towards it, one step at a time. |

| Motivation | "What's your excuse? | May 30 2008 23:32 (UTC) |

| My excuse was "I don't have the time". I worked 60-80 hours a week and slept the rest (didn't even eat much).
Since getting married and moving to "God's country" I haven't had much luck finding a job that I would actually enjoy and get paid enough... so I decided to stay home and be a housewife for a while. Seems like time is all I have now... I have actually learned to cook (still don't enjoy it much though) and have plenty of time for exercise. |

| When it takes you an hour to eat an orange
When you not only talk back to the instructor on the exercise DVD (as previously mentioned)… but actually get ahead of the video and have to stop to let it catch up When you actually count out the number of M&M’s you are “allowed” to eat When you know that you can save 10 calories by eating three small peppermint patties throughout the day vs one large one When someone offers you one of your favorite “bad” foods you actually say the words “no thank you, it’s just not worth it” as they are stuffing their mouth with it and staring at you When the first thought in the morning is “I wonder how much I weigh today?” and the last thought at night is “I wonder what I’ll weigh tomorrow?” |

| You are the same height, age and weight I was six years ago. .. and I had the same problem. I have since learned that the same diet never works twice (for me anyway).
I am now down to 138 and wear a smaller size than I did when I was 120. Here's what I learned... if it feels like work, it won't work. What I mean is: you need to find a healthy balance of good food and junk food while staying in your calorie zone (which from my experience, I think may be 1400-1600 for you) so you don't feel deprived, I use the 80/20 rule... 80% good food and 20% fun food. And find exercise that you feel you can do every day that makes you feel better afterwards so it doesn't feel like work. I also learned from CC that I had been undereating and overexercising and have been trying to eat about 1500 calories a day. Good luck! |

| Weight Loss | Eating to keep calories up but not even hungry...!? :S | May 27 2008 21:48 (UTC) |
4 |
| Just my opinion...
It depends... are you an over-eater or an under-eater? If you are an over-eater eating less than your goal once in a while won't hurt you, just don't make a habit of it. If you are an under-eater, it may cause you to go back to the old way of eating too little... so force yourself to eat up to your goal calories. Either way, if you find yourself over-eating the next day to compensate I would suggest eating up to your goal calories in order to avoid getting into a starve-binge routine. |

| Motivation | Can't stick with anything... Help! | May 27 2008 18:43 (UTC) |

| You are the same height and weight I was when I started here almost a year ago. I am now down 20 pounds to 139, which was my original goal... now I am trying for another 10. I am finally in a size 6 for the first time in my life (even though I have weighed as little as 125).
I have been a yo-yo dieter my entire life. The one thing I have learned is that I am not able to make diet and exercise a habit, no matter how long I do it. It's been almost a year this time, and I could still go back to the old ways in a heartbeat if I knew I wouldn't gain anything back. The biggest lesson I have learned is to do everything in moderation. If it feels like work, or I feel deprived... I expect to be rewarded by the scale at the end of the week. WRONG! I have found out that for me, it depends more on where I am at in my cycle than on how hard I work or how much I deprive myself. I found exercises that I feel I can do every day without feeling like I worked really hard, but that make me feel better about myself (so at the end of the week if I haven't lost any weight I don't feel like quiting). I don't starve myself, or deprive myself of what I really want... I just make sure to allow myself calories each day for "fun food". I try to go by the 80/20 rule... behave 80% of the time and enjoy 20%. And yet, stay within my calorie range. I also don't compare my weight day to day... I DO record it every day... but I compare it to months ago... not days. I've only been losing about 2 pounds a month... but I feel so much better! |

| Weight Loss | Has anyone tried hypnosis? | May 27 2008 18:08 (UTC) |
10 |
| Hey, if it's free... I say try it! Just be sure to know what they plan to say to you...
I tried the self hypnosis tapes a few years ago... and YES it worked, only TOO well. I found myself getting nauseous whenever I even thought of food and actually throwing up after eating certain things. My husband at the time thought I was "doing the bullimia thing again" but I wasn't doing it on purpose. My Mom finally asked me what was on the tapes I was listening to, I didn't know because I always fell asleep. So, I listened to one while staying awake and it was saying things like "picture eating your favorite food in front of a mirror, enjoy the taste, now look in the mirror... can you see the maggots moving on the food? smell the food rotting? feel the maggots in your mouth?" etc I stopped listening and the nausea went away. Guess I'm just too susceptible to suggestion. |

| You sound a lot like I used to be... I'm a lifelong yo-yo dieter. This time has been different. This time started about five years ago, when I switched my focus from losing weight to relieving my headaches.
I think the first thing you might want to try is to re-focus your thoughts to something more positive, some people do it for their kids, some just want to feel better about themselves, some just want to be able to walk up the stairs without getting out of breath. I also recommend setting your weekly goals on something that you have control over, like drinking water or eating fruit and vegetables every day... and make it small enough that you can achieve it, like one a day... every week you reach that goal, increase it for the next week or add something else. Setting weekly goals based solely on the scale has made me quick dozens of times. I have lost 20 pounds so far and am down to my goal size for the first time in my life... it has taken me almost a year . |

| Molly - I love the question of the day idea! Sorry I'm a bit late, I reached my original goal a few weeks ago and it's seems to have taken me off track for a while... but I'm back at it... trying for another 10 pounds! Summer goal is to get outside everyday! Maybe even walk on the beach. (it’s less than two blocks away) As for the questions... What's one tip/suggestion you have for encouraging yourself to DRINK MORE WATER? (What works for you? What are you going to try?) I start each morning with a glass of water, an hour of Slim in 6 and another glass of water. The rest of the day I have a glass of water after each time I go to the bathroom. (My husband calls it “reloading”). What's one so-called "diet food" that you really detest/dislike/avoid/hate? I avoid artificial sweeteners of any kind… mainly because they give me headaches and migraines. Do you like fish? Do you eat fish? What sort of fish will you eat? And do you take a fish-oil supplement? (What the heck, do you own fish?) I detest fish… can’t even stand the smell. |

| I've never really liked cheese that much (too bitter for me). But I absolutely can't eat it ever since I found out how it's made.
Not to ruin it for everyone, if you are interested google "rennet"... that's what they add to milk to make it solid. YUCK! |

| Weight Loss | Please help me find clothing that fits! | May 21 2008 03:00 (UTC) |

| I had the exact same problems! For pants - I found a lot of clothes that fit very nicely for not a lot of money (at least the clearance items) in the petite department of Kohls. I got an entire new summer wardrobe (in size 6... yes!) for about $150.
For shirts I have found that 3/4 sleeve fit the best... I found a few nice ones at Taylor's. Another nice place, especially for dress clothes (if you shop the clearance rack again) is Christopher Banks. Any store that has a "petite" department works! |

| Thanks everyone! I think I will continue doing what I am and not worry about losing... if it happens it happens... if not, no big deal. feydruss - excellent point! Even though I am smaller than I have ever been, I am also the strongest (thanks to weight training) and have more energy (thanks to water... and finally eating enough!) than ever before. And I want to keep it that way! |

| My brother. He killed himself last August at age 33. Seeing the effect it's had on all the people who love him, especially my parents and his wife and three young kids has been one heck of eye-opener for me. Being a suicide survivor has been the worst experience of my life. I don't ever want to make the people that love me feel like that. | |||

| First I'd like to say "welcome to CC" and congrats on losing the weight you have so far... that's amazing.
I am a lifetime yo-yo dieter... I've been everwhere between 125 and 198. I am 38, 5'2" and weighed in today at 139, down from 158 last October. I was 145 when I met my husband a few years ago, gained 15lbs after we got married but am now down another five from before. My measurements are 38-25-35... the smallest they've ever been! This past week is my "losing week" (I usually lose about three pounds the week before my period and maintain that weight for the next three weeks) and I actually got down to 137.5 on Wed so I made my appt for my "20lb loss haircut" that I promised myself. I also went shopping this week and actually bought my first pair of size 6 jeans EVER! It's been one awesome week! |

| I forgot to add that even at 125 at 21 years old my measurements were 38-28-38... and I could not get below size 9!
Now at age 38 I weigh 138 (and counting down) with measurements of 37-25-35 and I am wearing size 6... for the first time in my life!! My new mantra is: food is not the enemy and water is my best friend |

| You sound like me 15 years ago. I was eating 900-1000 calories a day and working out like mad at 135 pounds and 5'2"... but instead of losing weight, I started GAINING! In fact, I gained 10 pounds every year until I reached almost 200 pounds... I was in tears! I tried everything, weight watchers, Jenny Craig... everything made me gain weight.
So, I will tell you what I would love to be able to go back in time and tell myself... you need to EAT! Yes, I know it sounds wrong? We've all been told to eat less and exercise more, but at some point your body figures it out and holds onto every little bite of food you give it for dear life. I have been forcing myself to eat 1400-1500 calories a day and working out only half an hour for the past few months now and I am losing about a pound a week. I have lost almost 20 pounds now... down to 138. I feel better, I don't feel deprived, I don't feel like I am working my butt off trying to lose weight, so it's very easy to be patient. You're trying too hard. |

| Weight Loss | If you could offer ONE piece of advice you've learned the hard way to someone, what would it be? | Apr 21 2008 00:59 (UTC) |
42 |
| 1. Food is NOT the enemy!
2. Water is your best friend 3. Exercise is just another daily task like brushing your teeth or taking a shower... motivation is not a factor! P.S. All three of the above will reduce and sometimes eliminate constant headaches better than any pain reliever. |

| Does he really want to lose weight? If he doesn't want to put in the effort there is nothing you can do.
Although, I did plant the seed in my DH by asking him if it would be ok with him if we tracked what he was currently eating (to get him into the habit of counting). He really wanted to lose weight so he agreed. I tracked his calories for a month, no judging, no comments... this is key. After a month, we went over what he was doing right and wrong. I calculated what he SHOULD be eating. I also portion out his plates at meals so I know how many calories he is eating. Now he usually asks if he can have something before eating it (makes me feel like the food police). Good luck! |

| Health & Support | What would you do with a 5 inch belly scar? | Apr 14 2008 01:55 (UTC) |

| I actually have a 5 inch long 1 inch wide scar on my stomach from when I had my appendix removed when I was 16 (small town doctor did a hack job on me).
But I must admit, I've actually never thought about it. I didn't do anything to try to get rid of it, I don't hide it from amyone but then again I don't really flaunt it either. It's just there. |

| Weight Loss | The #1 problem I see on Calorie Count - Undereating | Apr 07 2008 17:06 (UTC) |
55 |
| Here is what I get when I put in my stats (5'2", 140lbs, 38yrs):
• You'll need at least 1,645 calories to maintain your current weight and activity level. • Of this, 1,265 calories are required to meet your body's basic energy needs. That amount (your resting energy expenditure) is what you'd use up if you did nothing but lie in bed all day. • To lose about one pound per week, you'll need to cut back to 1,145 calories per day. Why is it telling me to eat: 1. Less than the amount required to meet my body's basic energy needs? 2. Less than 1200 calories? |

| Weight Loss | Dieted Yourself Fat???? | Apr 01 2008 22:59 (UTC) |

| So glad to see I'm not the only one! I've been dieting (cutting calories and exercising like mad) since age 10 when my parents owned a Dairy Queen and that was where we lived and breathed for an entire year, ice cream was my every meal. I gained 30 pounds and have been trying to get rid of it ever since.
I must have been on the same roller coaster that you were on... starve and work out like crazy, lose 10 pounds... take a break, gain 20. I got down to 125 in 1991. Eventually I started gaining BEFORE I gave up! Nothing like not eating, working out constantly and gaining, all while being exhausted, depressed and headachy all the time! I eventually ended up at 190 and gave in to bullimia to get back down to 150, stopped the bullimia and went back to 170. Finally got back on track (eating 900-1200 calories a day), down to 150 for the past few years. Now, I am eating 1400-1500 a day and on my way to the 130's, almost headache-free (I am excedrin-free for the first time in my life!), have more energy than every before and life is good! Glad to hear that you have been able to maintain your weight loss for 3 years... that gives me a lot of hope and motivation to continue on this road. P.S. I love to read the advice you give to others on CC... you are one of the CC posters that I consider to be "my inspiration"! |

| Are you eating enough? Are you drinking enough water?
I have just recently realized that when I started eating more (I upped my calories from 1200 to 1450, I am 38, weigh 140 at 5'2") my weight seems to have stabilzed a bit. I used to be up and down by five pounds or so each day but now it's more like a pound or so. I also notice a more drastic change when I don't drink as much water as I should, especially around TTOM. |

| Weight Loss | Screwed up Metabolism :( | Apr 01 2008 03:08 (UTC) |

| Yes, it is. I have been in starvation mode (I prefer to call it storage mode) for most of my life. I have always counted calories but when I started CC last June I was eating about 1000 calories a day (I had been as low as 500 a day in my twenties... silly girl!), and not losing. After reading all the posts on here about not eating below 1200 calories I upped my calories to that. I started losing very slowly, but I was losing. I still felt tired and headachy all the time though. Then the starvation mode threads started a few months ago (put "starvation mode" into the search engine in CC to see the posts) so I upped my calories to 1450. I feel so much better now and I am still losing. I have lost almost 20 pounds now and I feel more healthy and energetic (at age 38) than I ever have in my life!
For me, it's not all about the weight loss, it's finding a way to eat that I can live with that makes me feel more energized and pain-free than ever before! |

| Well, not sure how much this will help you, other than to let you know that you are not alone...
I am 5'2" down to 140 from 162. I upped my calories from 1200 to 1450 mid-February. It felt like a lot of food at first, but I cheated a little and added a slimfast in the evening. Eventually, it seemed that some days I was really hungry... I guess that was my metabolism kicking in... I hadn't felt hungry in years! And yet, other days it was still hard to get all the calories in. But, I am now still losing weight at about the same rate as I was before, but I feel more energetic, happier and I have finally gotten past that low weight I haven't been able to get below since 1996. |

| I was reading a post in another forum and it reminded me of this one...
My husband (ex now) took me in to the doctor because he was concerned about my not eating for days (anorexia?) and then throwing up when I did finally eat something (bullimia?) The doctor told him that I could not possibly be anorexic or bullimic because I was too fat. Nice, huh? Matty - is that for real?! |
