Checking - still living in Japan?  I arrived in Japan 2 1/2 months ago so I'm trying to see how others are able to keep up with this website in Japan and how that's going.

Hi!  I'm 5'2'', started last June at 200 lbs, and am currently 164 lbs (been maintaining at that for the past 3 months).  I'm looking to get down to 130 lbs and re-evaluate then.

I've been away from cc for a while (those 3 months) but i think it's time to begin counting again!

Hello!  Our stats are so similar, and I love meeting people on here.  My name is Alex, and I'm 19, height 5'2'', and I started on here at 200 lbs back in mid-June, and I'm currently around 175 lbs (180lbs at the highest--i switched scales when i came to England where i'm at for the semester, so i'm hoping they're compatible, but we'll see when i go home to the U.S.).

Over the summer, I worked in an office and was on calorie-count all day, it was really bad....so i understnad! lol

But another weight-loss buddy is always a good thing!

and to the above post, if the number of calories there is scaring you--eat half a baked potato instead of a whole one and skip the butter and you can be looking at 450 calories.  if that still bothers you, eat half of the chicken breast or something

there is no way you are eating enough!  and you need protein!  fruit is almost all carbs--sugars.  you need to eat some more protein and definitely more calories, especially if you are working out.

if you starve yourself for a month, you will gain the weight back after you begin eating better.

i am not trying to be mean or harsh, and i know i dont have any experience.  i'm only  repeating what i've read in these forums.  please look around a bit more and read more about what others have posted about not eating enough calories and enough protein.

good luck on losing weight, and if you ever want to talk about anything, feel free to message me.

i honestly don't really know--i'm no expert--but i've seen on this website different suggestions:

fat-protein-carbs
25-25-50
20-30-50

I aim for the 25-25-50 one, although i'm still not getting enough protein and fat, and if i'm strength training, i try to up the protein to the 30% mark.

I'm a work-study for the President's Office at my college.  It means I do whatever anyone in the building tells me to (well, not quite that many, but quite a few), which is typically office work.  However, since my bosses rarely have enough work for me, I usually have some free time to be on here!

gosh, i'm jealous - i wish i had a cafeteria! someone else doing the cooking and unlimited food options and quantities! sounds perfect!  and no dishes!  where do i sign up?

yes, you have to live in dorms, and it probably does cost more...

but it's annoying when there's nothing healthy in the menu (or the healthy thing they can't cook...such as fish...which they ruin)...then i just hit up the sandwich bar and get a sandwich...sometimes for both lunch and dinner....

but i do love the whole not cooking myself thing on days when the food is actually decent!  and I gotta admit--not doing the dishes is the best!

boy can i relate!  i'm working at college over the summer, and so are a bunch of my friends.  we all eat at the college cafeteria, so it's a buffet everyday with desserts at every meal.  Not only do i get to watch my friends eat whatever they want, all kinds of conferences use the college campus, and so i get to watch thousands of people eat whatever they want (the largest conference has bee 1700, most aren't that big but there can be several at once).

Some days, it's really tough.  I watch my friends get dessert all the time and know that i can't.  I know i have to go exercise, and most of them don't  (although 2 do).  I don't know, what helps me is planning my days--plan my meals in advance so i know how many calories to eat/not eat.  I try to balance it, and I eat my fruit last and try to consider it my "dessert" because it's really sweet.  I also spread my meals out so i don't ever get really hungry.  I chew gum because it helps for my mouth to be doing the motion.  And if I get bored or down, I try and go do something else (read, cross-stitch, whatever) to get my mind off food.

There aren't any tricks i know of, other than exercising so i can eat more (lol), other than to focus on the scale going down and my clothes fitting better (which has begun to happen, slightly).  I try and think of what it will be like, when my family will see me at Christmas and i've lost weight, or friends when i come back from studying abroad.  I'm going on vacation in 2 days, and i'm nervous about that, but I guess I just have to remember how bad I want this, and think about what it will feel like to get there.

I can't say I understand your situation completely, but I can certainly relate.  And i do mess up, but then I just get back on track the next day.

I agree with the baseball rants!

But if there is going to be watching of a sport (for me, I like/could get into watching American football...maybe even into basketball), then there should also be some playing of said sport...because playing it is so much more fun than just watching a game....even if you are terrible at it....

you have not been eating enough!   If you are burning 400 calories + walking + PIYO class + weight training, there is no way you have 1000-1200 net calories a day!  You should be eating at least 1600, probably more (I don't know how intense or long your walking, class, and weight training are, but you should probably be eating more than 1600, closer to 2000 depending how much you burn from those three activities).

I haven't lost enough weight to really tell yet (I was wearing size 16s w stretch, and some 18s, and after 12-13 lbs I fit into a couple more of my 16s, but not all of them, and some of them I can get into but are too tight to wear out, plus one 14 skirt i can get into but too tight to wear out...and by getting into i mean button and zipper up)

But I definitely hear your on the thighs being bigger than my waist!  That's me too, and it's so annoying when jeans/capris fit around the waist but are too tight in the thighs!

Oh yeah, and V-necks look great on me too because of my body shape!

chuckigirl--my story is rather similar--19, never really had a boyfriend, one boy in 10th grade who we "went out" for 2 weeks or so, but never kissed or went on a single date.  guy i liked all through high school said he was gay summer after freshman year in college....

I'm just under 190 lbs, close to you, (although I started this at 200), and don't think i'm attractive, and also "hope I don't have "fat girl syndrome" when i get to my goal weight"

"It is when one becomes able to look past those flaws and point out the positives"  Even though I have low self-esteem, I can still see things in my body that I do like, and I always have been able to.  I guess for me, I just don't see how any guy will ever see past my flaws to find me attractive, and I think a large part of it stems from childhood teasing and because no one really has yet.

1) B --which, since parties are generally on weekends and i sleep until noon, eliminating breakfast, is not really hard to do....

2) A, B, D  -- i eat a lot more fruit and veggies, but I also use the diety things, and i guess i'm just not very picky because they don't really taste different, and if i don't like the diety food then C, but i do think that a bit of ice cream here and there won't hurt me  (ice cream is my weakness)

3)  I enjoy being able to fit into clothes I couldn't wear a month ago!  I also enjoy being able to fall asleep faster at night, and the chance to learn how not to overeat, plus counting calories isn't as hard as I thought it would be.

The most difficult things are to get enough sleep (I can't seem to go to bed early enough) and to get motivated to go work out.

And are your families as annoying as mine?  Almost every time I see one of them, however they're related to me, I get asked if I have a boyfriend yet (although the question is usually nicer than that).  Gahm I just want to smack whoever it is asking me that, but I'm so embarrassed--it's like there's something wrong with me because unlike all my cousins, I don't have a steady boyfriend/have never brought a boy home.

And another thing--embarrassing as it is, has anyone else been asked if they are gay/lesbian because they are single?  Because I'm definitely straight, and regardless of what my beliefs concerning homosexuality are (for the record, I support GLBT rights), I find that question/assumption offensive!  I mean, what if I was?  Accusing me is not the way to go, and since I'm not, I'm offended because at least if I was, I would have an excuse--it's like I'm even stranger/something more is wrong with me.

Although I've wanted a boyfriend for the longest time, I'm a little mixed about being single right now.  This fall (August 30th can't come soon enough!) I'm studying abroad in England for a semester, and I'm kind of glad I don't have a boyfriend to be away from.  Also, I'm thinking of taking a year or two off in between undergrad and grad school and teaching English in Japan, so again, not having a boyfriend at that time could (a) help make it happen, (b) keep me from feeling guilty about leaving, (c) lessen my ties to home.  It's not that I would say no to starting a relationship now/when i return from England, and I know two years before Japan is a long time when anything could happen, but I'm so excited about going abroad that for the first time, I can see being single as a blessing.

some people talk about breaking plateaus (note: this is from what i've read, not experienced) that they had to change up their exercise routine--one person talked about upping the resistance on the elliptical for her workouts because it's like your body gets used to the exercise.  perhaps you can do something similar on treadmill (w/ incline maybe?  or perhaps try elliptical)

also, do you weight lift at all?  maybe try that

your calories sound right, so I would suggest messing wiht your exercise not calories (other than adjusting your caloric intake to match whatever you do change in your exercise)

if you don't want to change your exercise, others have talked about calorie zig-zagging or rotation, but i don't really know anything about that.

sorry i couldn't be more helpful.  if i find that thread on the elliptical, i'll link it

My biggest issue with dating is that I feel out of place in society. I don't drink, I don't goto church, I feel like because I look like I do no man will ever approach me. I like to be active but my friends don't so i get frustrated walking alone with my dog

Exactly.  It's a bit different for me (i'm at a small Christian college) and so none of my friends are into the whole drinking/partying scene (thank God), but since my beliefs have changed and I no longer go to church or to many are no longer Christian (although I still consider myself to be), I don't fit in to the "normal" college stereotype and nor do I fit into my college's society.  Also, I would love to go play random games of ultimate frisbee/football/basketball/whatever, but my friends don't seem to be in to any of that.  And the one exercise I've found that I enjoy is swimming--and none of my friends like to swim!  So I go alone.  Which is good and bad.

All of this combines to make me feel out of place...and keeps me from meeting other potential "prospects" or friends.

I know that I wont be able to think a woman finds me attractive unless I am happy in my own skin, so that's my main goal. Also I compare myself to other guys all the time, and always end up on the short end of the stick in my mind. It's hard building confidence though. People tell my my good qualities, how I'm tall, and funny, and smart but I don't even hear them because of the way I look.

I second all of that (except change it to me being a woman)!  That's why I'm here too!  I've been told that being overweight doesn't keep a lot of people from getting guys (or girls I suppose, sorry), but that's what I blame my lack of success on--and it's not hard to compare yourself to the skinny girls that always seem to have guys hanging all over them.

But I do know that unless I am happy with who I am, no one else will be, and I won't believe that someone else could be happy with me too.

I have probably sabotaged a few oppurtunities because of my lack of self-confidence.

That is what the people closest to me tell me too.....I've been told that because I assume the other person (whoever they are) will find me unattractive, they never even get the chance to find me attractive, if that makes sense.

Although for me, I divide how I feel about myself into two categories:  I have high self-confidence in my abilities and my mind, but low self-esteem and confidence in my appearance and my social abilities.

And being an introvert doesn't help....
Weight Loss what is a healthy calorie consumption for 5'2? Jul 17 2007

see my other post on your other topic that's almost the same as this one.

I just wanted to post again now that I learned you also play sports because whatever you decide to do, when you're active you're going to need to eat more anyway.  Also, since you're still not 18, your calorie needs are going to be a bit different than the tools on the site say (i.e. you need more calories than what this site says).  Search for some other threads posted by teens--there are links to calorie expenditures for teens under 18.

I went out to dinner with my mom, sister, and sister's best friend one night, and we went to Friendly's because that's where they wanted to go.  I was so upset that there was NOTHING I could eat!  I ended up making my own meal (lol), but I was embarrassed because of the reactions of people close to me.  I imagine a date would be even harder considering how embarrassed I get just with family and friends.
Weight Loss what do you think? losing weight is hard even if you count calories! Jul 17 2007

use some of the tools on the site.  As of right now, your BMI is about 21 (healthy is between 20-24), so you are already on the low end of healthy.  I also checked your goals, and both of them will put you underweight (19.2 and 18.3).

I would imagine that you are already very slim, and if you want the wash board stomach, do NOT restrict your calories, but start doing exercises for your abs.  Check out the fitness threads on how to tone your midriff.  Also, if you are going to try and be building muscle, you may have to eat over your maintenance calories.  And rather than watching the scale, watch your measurements.

Hi,

My name is Alex, I'm 19, a junior in college, and I'm an English/Religion double major.  I've been single for a long time, and I've never had a serious longterm relationship.  I know that with my low self-esteem, I probably doom any prospects before anything even has a chance to happen.

It is different for single people than married people, and different for single people depending on what kind of situation they are in...i.e. if they are working, going to school/college, etc.  (for example, I'm working at my college over the summer, and living on campus, so I've been eating cafeteria food for 2 years straight now).  And while it seems like we have a lot more time, at the same time, if we are students, we could be working, going to school, homework/studying, on-campus activities, etc.

I'm losing weight to hopefully gain more self-confidence (which will help with the dating scene) and to stop being the fat classmate I was throughout the rest of school.  I hope to rediscover who I am in the process, and learn to be more comfortable within my own skin--a necessary thing before getting into a relationship.

So that's my little story!
