Health & Support For my dad Dec 09 2009

You could try what I did for my dad.  He is extremely stubbon and knows it all and won't go to the doctor.  He was not well had pain in chest and down arm.  Didn't tell anyone at the time - this was on the Friday.  He was very sick on the Monday outside our doctors surgery and collasped, they called an ambulance, hospital, heart attack - we all get called up there - he refuses to have an op for a stent. We all go home and that nite I wrote him a note.  It was private between the two of us (but now I share!).  It said how much I loved him being my dad, my children love their granddad and that we didn't want to lose him that I knew he was scared and I was as well but that I would rather have him around than not and that it saddened me that he thought so little of his family to look after himself and have a simple 20 minute procedure.  That he would rather die and put us through years of pain by losing him but, I still loved him no matter what.

He had the operation two days later - okay he grilled the surgeon to make sure they wouldn't 'take his heart out' - don't know where he got that idea from but whatever.

Anyway, have you tried writing him a card, letter or just a note telling him you love him, and that your very worried about his health and you just want to help.  Worth a shot. Lay it on thick - it meant a lot to Dad he just didn't realise that all the rest of the family was suffering not just him.

The Lounge Would you pay for your daughter's birth control? Oct 14 2009

I pay for my daughters and she is 14 - we get condoms free in NZ from family planning you just rock up and they give you boxes of them but I pay for her to be on the mini pill.  She is not sexually active (that I know of) but I would rather be safe than sorry.  I will continue to pay until she lets me know otherwise or perhaps until she leaves home.

Actually I have just noticed, my boss still pays for his daughters (I pay his bills for him) and she is 26 - cor blimey now I will have to have a chat to him about that!!!

Weight Loss counting calories vs lap band???? Aug 24 2009
22:14 (UTC)

My friend had lap band over a year ago when it first hit NZ.  She lost 25 kilos (55 pounds) within the first 4 months.  She had another 30 kilos to go.  Now she is struggling.  She has put back on 15 of those kilos so 45 now to go.  She can't eat normal food, it gets stuck. She can eat chocolate and lollies because they 'slid down'.  I went to lunch with her, lunch got stuck it was only pasta.  She had to go throw up in the toilets.  Its not pleasant (for both of us).  She has basically fallen off the lap band wagon.

I was thinking of getting it done but it has totally put me off. No matter what you do you need willpower.

Keep going with the healthy food and exercise, it will work.  It might take a while but the results are worth it.

I've lot 50 pounds exercising and watching (not overly strictly as I'm a chocolate addict) my food. Its not fallen off in a matter of months but it is slowly but surely coming off.

The Lounge Ever been suspended from school? Jul 22 2009

Three times but not my fault

1. School bully got around to finally picking on me so I smacked her one, turned out she had a hole in her heart and I got suspended she got nothing!  I waited for her outside the school gates, gave her a hiding so she won't pick on me again and also to make the most of the suspension I got

2. Doing fun things with the boyfriend.  Doh I got suspended and I spent even more time with him doing fun things!

3. Friend climbs robes in gym, dope falls from pocket, I pocket it, deny knowledge, get searched, find dope, called an accessory to the crime and got suspended again.

I used to get a canning alot.  School would say to Dad we are going to cane her and he would just say sweet as but if she smacks you back be warned.

I grew out of the aggresive wanting to kill everyone stage (I think!)

My friend was in Penticton for 6 months on her OE and she said she  joined (and I might be mistaken but I think it was free) Penticton Pounders (sorry if the link doesn't work someone might be able to fix it!) BUT, they were great to her - she said his name was Tim and if you let him know what you need he will be able to match you up with a buddy.  She said that they had joggers, wobblers and runners!  I'm a wobbler - someone that has just started and can easily give up unless someone drangles a chocolate bar in front of me - bit like a donkey.  Hope it helps.

If you need someone to kick your ** I'm sure they will oblige and usually people in a group like this help get you motivated.

I have it - no issues, I was big before and since I've had it I've lost 40 pounds.  No issue with losing weight with it.  It makes life a dreamLaughing

Oh and before you read the horror stories on the internet on the issues - insertion was a breeze took maybe a minute and I did a full gym workout an hour later.

Hope this helps

Weight Loss why do you REALLY want to lose weight [be honest] Mar 29 2009

I want to be able to buy clothes at normal stores instead of hunting high and low for something to wear and then giving up and having to wear the same clothes over and over and over again.

I want to be comfortable in summer instead of dripping in the heat and I don't want to be strangled by my bar anymore!

I want to not have to worry where to sit when I go out for dinner - that I have to squash past people or can fit the table.

The Lounge Anyone familiar with Mirena? Mar 23 2009

I got one - no issues whatsoever.  Insertion was a breeze although there are stories out there.  Thank god I never read them before going!  Yes you can feel the string but your meant to (and only if you go exploring!) to make sure it is in place it no worse than a tampon.  Hubby doesn't feel a thing.  No side effects except that periods are nearly non-existent which is what I got it for considering I was just about needing a blood transfusion every month!  I think its just brillant and has given me my life back.

Its not for everyone so if you don't like it - its no problem to get it out.  Give it a short.

My friend got one as well - she then wanted kids so had it removed - fell preggie within 2 months. She is having it inserted again after birth of baby.

Hang in there - when I started I was 233 and could only walk slowly for 10 minutes on the treadmill - try increasing it by 10 minutes every week - it works - now I can run (okay jog) for 40 minutes without the need of life support and I'm down to 190.

I also struggle and go very red when working out - often people come up to me to ask if I'm okay.

Oh ya - come on over - I live in New Zealand.  Fly into Auckland and travell down the North Island and fly out of Wellington.  You need to go to Rotorua for the hot pools and maori village, partake in the Haka, have a hungi for dinner and then hit Taupo for trout fishing, swiming with the dolphins, whale watching, Waitomo Caves where you see the glow worms - gosh the list goes on and on.  You need to shear a sheep once in a life time I'm sure!!!

As for exercise your get a lot of it walking around.

If you would like me to send you some information just pm me and I'll flick you back some links.

December/January are lovely months weather wise BBQ season!!

Well done on the 20 pounds!

Because people don't mention it, it doesn't mean they don't notice.  I lost weight, no one at my work mentioned it - but, the ladies next door to us did, they caught me in the lift and said wow look at how much you have lost.

Some people are afraid to comment on weight loss - its a tricky subject.

Weight Loss Low cal vs. lap band - why different ? Plateau after one week.... Jul 21 2008
22:52 (UTC)
My girlfriend has just had lapband surgery last Thursday. Two weeks before the op she was weighed and put on three protein shakes per day leading up to surgery to shrink the liver to give access to the area.  The protein shakes were 195 calories each.  So basically a 600 calorie pre-op diet for two weeks.

She weighed at that time 286 pounds.  She was weighed on the date of the operation and weighed 275 pounds - loss of 11 pounds over two weeks living on shakes.  She was hungry believe me I heard it all!!!

Operation was easy, just three little holes and she feels great.  She is still on three protein shakes a day as it is one week after the op - she weighed again and has not another 11 pounds - weight is now 264.

Now she has to start introducing 'solids'.  She takes two protein shakes a day and one cup of solids mushed up.  Gradually increasing back to solids.

The lapband is controlled by a fluid that the doctor puts into the band every few weeks to adjust the opening.  She will need to do this for a few months until just right.  When she wishes to have another child, they remove the fluid.  She wants to have another baby in a couple of years but cannot at the moment due to her weight.

The operation cost NZ$20,000.00.  Personally I can think of better ways to spend the money but everyone to their own.  I was just pleased she didn't go for a gastric bypass as it is a harsher operation.

Weight Loss Would you eat as much if you had to kill it/ grow it? Mar 11 2008
03:05 (UTC)
I grow my own fruit and vegies which I love doing and the taste is fantactic and I supply enough for my parents as well.  But I could not 'grow my own' cows, lambs, pigs etc. I get too attached to animals and consider them to be part of the family (hence the high vets bills for the Cat!!!!).  My hubbie nearly dies when I bring home a new pet.  If I said I wanted to raise cows to eat he would divorce me!!!
