I appreciate the responses but i must point out that 1) all of my pictures in my gallery are not recent, the most recent one is my default which is from over a year ago, and 2) this is NOT an issue about my BDD. Throughout the entire course of the summer I felt great, and I thought I looked good and was happy. It was only when I saw the pictures of myself from just last week, thought to myself that something did not seem right, and then put them SIDE BY SIDE with the pictures from one year prior that I saw a visible difference. This is not me looking at one picture and thinking I look fat, it is me comparing my appearance from one year to the next. Once I get my scanner working I will scan the pictures in so you can see what I mean. I repeat, this is not an issue with my BDD. Even throughout the cruise when I looked in the mirror I thought I looked great, and then looking at the pictures themselves was like I was looking at a different person. My main concern is not about my BDD, it is about how I can gain weight when I eat healthy and exercise so much

None of my pictures in the gallery are recent. The most recent is my default which was taken over a year ago. My scanner is currently not working so I can't scan in the pictures, but I am positive that this is not just my being paranoid or having my face "fill out." It legitimately is much more bloated looking this year as though I put on weight. As I said, I have added eight pounds since December, but I attributed that to my increasing mileage and getting bigger leg muscles since I can not believe I gained weight based on my diet. In order for me to have gained weight I probably would have had to have eaten about 3500 calories a day, which I know for a fact is no where near what I've been eating. Can you somehow gain weight by exercising too much or something?

Substituting sugar free syrup saves 20 calories. A light frappucino is made with one pump of syrup. Each pump of regular syrup (according to Starbucks nutritional info) is 20 calories. The SF syrup has 0 calories. I have worked in a Starbucks and know this to be the case.

Someone mentioned that they get them from being cold, and I think this is right on. I run EVERY day and never get foot cramps, but during the school year when I have swim practice, I get them all the time, even at night when I am lying in bed because the pool is unbearably cold.

Foods Spinach...giving me gas? May 01 2009

Giabash is right. I love spinach and spinach salads. I have an obscene amount of raw spinach when I make my salads, but I figured out a trick. I take all the spinach I want (dining hall), and then microwave it. Doing that gives me extremely little to no gas at all. However, if I ate like 1/10 of the amount of spinach I normally eat RAW instead of cooked...there's trouble.

I do the same thing as well...run very early in the monring and then again in the late afternoon. I think it has trained my body (specifically my legs) to speed up in recovery and get used to doing it every day. I feel great.

Well the only difference I can think of is that yesterday in particular I just did cardio. I run in the morning and then in the afternoon I either do weights or run more. Yesterday I only ran more and didn't have to use the bathroom all night.

The thing is - I heard that weight training causes your muscles to retain water. Therefore, it doesn't make sense in my mind that on the day I DIDN'T weight train, I didn't go to the bathroom (since perhaps my muscles were retaining water)? I don't know, it doesn't make sense to me.

Foods How is my diet looking? Mar 13 2009

Re: the shake at night. It's a special shake that as I said takes 12 hours to digest. In the words of my nutritionist, it ensures that I'm "feeding" while I sleep and do not enter a catabolic state.

Re: my menu. I'm in college - so I'm pretty restricted by what I can eat. Grilled chicken is practically the only healthy thing they have on a daily basis.

Re: my exercise routine. I was wondering myself about my calorie burn. As it is, 2100 calories for the day is more than I've been eating in the past. When I just do cardio days, I normally break it up into 4 miles in the morning, and 3 miles running in the afternoon. On lifting days, it's 4 miles in the morning and then like an hour/hour and a half of weights in the afternoon.

Thanks for all the input!

I run on the treadmill everyday. When I need to run outside for whatever reason, I think that it's a lot easier. Therefore, the opposite is happening to you: you're used to running outside, so the treadmill seems harder. As stated above, it's due to the different motion. You're not propelling yourself forward.

Weight Loss Why Did I Gain Weight? Feb 27 2009
00:17 (UTC)

I've always been able to pinch a little fat which never bothered me, but I don't see any difference in muscle, I don't feel stronger, and I don't look any more cut, so that's why I think it could possibly be fat.

And in terms of my protein, if anything i'm getting more than enough. I know I really shouldn't but I try to restrict my carbs as much as possible with the exception of fruits and vegetables (ie no bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, starchy vegetables like corn, peas, and carrots). I MAINLY eat grilled chicken, fish, egg whites, whey protein shakes, natural peanut butter, lots of green vegetables like broccoli and spinach, and then moderate amounts of fruit like apples and bananas.

Um, how about you stick to the question I'm asking? All I wanted to know was whether or not the sodium in cottage cheese would negatively affect me. A simple yes or no would have sufficed. You don't have to cross check my post with previous postings of mine and do detective work to come up with a smart-ass response.

By removing the fat they remove a lot of taste. They need to replace it somehow. The result? More sodium, carbs, sugar, and calories.

Fitness Help with my post-swim season workout plan Feb 23 2009

According to CC, at sedentary I burn 1800 calories. I eat close to 2500 calories a day. My diet was not the problem. The excess of cardio caused my failure, not my diet. I could have counteracted that by eating even more, you're right, but I'm not going to forcefeed myself 4000 calories a day.

What I like to do is take 1 TBSP of regular peanut butter, ~90 calories, and then mix that with about 2 TBSP of PB2, and add water of course. I get so much more peanut butter, and it's still much less fat and less than 150 calories.

I used to eat: hot pockets, mcdonald's, lunchables, pizza, hamburgers, french fries, ice cream, brownies.

I used to exercise: never.

NOW I eat: whey protein powder, hummus, broccoli, spinach, grilled chicken, white fish, cottage cheese, egg whites, PB2, bananas, apples, tabouleh.

I NOW exercise: Either running 7 miles on the treadmill or my swim practices for college, which is D1.

Fitness How many calories do i burn going 4 miles?? Feb 01 2009

290 is probably right. The 100 calorie per mile thing is the roughtest of the rough estimates and I believe it would only pertain to an average 150 pound man or something. You're not only a girl, you're not only 14, but you're also only 105 pounds. When you add all of those together, it means you don't burn as many calories as other older people. You didn't give specifics on your run, such as how long you were jogging, at what speed, and then how long you walked and at what speed.

I plugged in 105 pounds and 4 miles into this calculator and got a similar number.

Fitness Fatter after exercise? Feb 01 2009

Personally I think I look better after I work out. However, in your case, I suspect that perhaps before you work out you don't expect to look good or you don't necessarily care how you look because let's face it you're going to work out and it's not a beauty contest at the gym. However, afterwards, you're happy your workout is over and you in a way expect to look good because you feel as though you should since you worked out. This heightened sense of "I should look good now" or higher expectations to look good might explain then why you don't think you look good.

It sounds weird but it happens to me all the time. When I'm at school I don't care at all how I look. I don't shave really and I just wear sweats and stuff to class. When my parents come up to visit me though I want to look good. I shave and dress nice for them and even though I then look 100 times better than before, I normally don't think I look good since I now EXPECT to look good, whereas previously I had no expectations to look good and therefore could not care less.

Foods Question about Breakfast Feb 01 2009
19:38 (UTC)

Many people will tell you that an apple and coffee is not breakfast. Personally I would have to agree. Breakfast has a number of different purposes. One: break the fast. Two, start your metabolism. Three, keep you full for a while until a snack or lunch. Also, for whatever reason eating apples in my mind just makes you feel hungrier shortly thereafter. I like to have something more filling, like egg whites or oatmeal to help keep me full.

With that being said, if it works for you, then do it. I agree with carolinamoon when she says she likes to save calories for later in the day. I do too, which is why breakfast is normally my smallest meal. However, I would still recommend something more substantial than an apple. Maybe an apple and a bowl of cereal? An apple and an omelete? An apple and oatmeal? Just my opinion though.

Fitness work out questions Feb 01 2009
19:33 (UTC)

How often you change your routine is a matter of opinion so it's completely up to you. Cross training is very beneficial since it keeps your body guessing as to the type of workout and as you mentioned it helps when your main workout gets too easy. If you like your workout routine and it's tough, then just do that. If it gets too easy, then change it. You could also do tae-bo 3 times a week and then weight training or cardio 2-3 days a week.

If you're on a weight loss diet and start incorporating work outs, then it is perfectly normal to lose a pound a week. Therefore, in 2 weeks you could probably see a little difference if you lost weight each week.

Lastly, I don't know what you mean. Normally people who start working out when they never worked out before LOSE weight because of the added level activity. The only difference is if you normally "work out" by doing cardio and then start weight training and eating more protein to gain muscle, which would result in weight gain. I honestly have no idea why you gained 5 pounds your first week. No offense but you certainly did not gain 5 pounds of muscle, but since you were working out you definitely did not gain 5 pounds of fat either. Maybe someone else can answer this.

Fitness Problem with my Nike+ Ipod Jan 31 2009
22:52 (UTC)

I unfortunately have no choice but to calibrate on a treadmill. I'm up at school and the only track that I could possibly use is as of this moment covered in a foot of snow. I calibrated it for the first time on a treadmill as well. The next day I ran outside on my typical route which according to mapmyrun.com and my car was a total of 6.1 miles and the ipod told me 6.23, so i'm not too worried about that. I realize it won't be spot on accurate; I was just concerned as to why every one of my workouts were subsequently getting shorter and shorter according to the iPod when my workouts were exactly the same.

Fitness Does cutting back on exercise cause weight gain? Jan 27 2009

Yes but that's under the assumption that the current calories you're eating is at maintenance. So theoretically if you were operating on a small deficit and then reduced exercise then it would just shift so that you're eating just right, correct?

I don't know your stats so this number will not be accurate, but for argument's sake, let's say that the body burns 1500 calories a day naturally. If your hike supposedly burned an additional 1450 calories, that means you burned 2950 calories and ate 2000, for a deficit of 950 calories, which is probably too large for weight loss purposes. A deficit of 500 calories will suffice, whereas 1000 calorie deficits could cause starvation mode.

Foods How many calories in a "bed" of pasta? Jan 04 2009
15:45 (UTC)

Thanks for the responses. I think Gi-Jane's analogy clearly applies to the dilemma. I ended up getting the chicken dish over whole wheat penne and there was honestly not much there. I ordered the pasta because I was hungry and I thought that getting the side of pasta would be more food than the side of "zuchinni marinara" that I could get (I have a choice of either the zuchinni or pasta). However, it was actually such a small "bed" that I second guessed my decision and started to think that the zuchinni would have been more. The portion was comparable to the portion of cooked pasta as pictured on this site: http://www.forceofnature.ca/nutrition.php. I wouldn't say as a rule of thumb though that this is always the case - my parents have ordered their entrees over beds of pasta in other restaurants and in those cased the portions were gigantic.

Health & Support For anyone who has knowledge of BDD Dec 27 2008

"thejabronisayz, what did the therapists say? Did you continue in treatment?"

The therapist basically concluded after the first few sessions that my problem was inherently linked totally to the ridicule I received in middle school for being fat. I believed that this may have contributed and/or caused my BDD, but since I have been out of middle school for over six years now and the situation has just gotten worse, I believe that there are other factors as well. She disagreed and was linking EVERY one of my episodes somehow someway to my still "hearing the laughter and ridicule in my mind" as I looked the mirror, which is and was at the time false. I stopped treatment after 2 months when I had to go back to school.

I have not seen a psychiatrist but that is something that I am looking into. I have as well become aware of the possible biological root to BDD. Case and point: my brother also has BDD. His is about 500 times less severe than mine and it does not at all consume him as mine does; however, he does nonetheless have it, which would explain and confirm a possible biological root.

I'll continue to help myself as much as I can, and I appreciate all the help that the calorie count community has given me.

Thanks a lot for all the replies. To the moderator - if I somehow violated the rules then I'm sorry. I was in no way promoting being unhealthy. Since this is a support forum I was just desperately seeking help and I in no way intended to infringe upon any of the terms/conditioning of the site.

As I said, I've gone to therapists, priests, and talked to my parents about this and nothing has helped. I was in reality very fat about eight years ago. I was teased mercilessly for it by girls (which would explain why after 3 semesters in college I have NO friends who are girls). In addition, my parents are extremely harsh when it comes to judging other people's appearances. They in no way say that I am fat; if anything they call me "count chocula" (the vampie guy with the ridiculous skinny face from the cereal). But they are critical of other people which makes me even more self conscious about my own appearance. They ALWAYS say that "it looks like [insert name here] put on a few" when we cross paths with someone we know. They have also described Miley Cyrus as having a "moon face" and have called Beyonce of all people fat. That's clearly why I am so nervous about looking good for them.

Looking at pictures sometimes helps. If I look at pictures from a few years ago then I can clearly see that my face now is much better looking; however, I just for the first time a few days ago got to look at the pictures from our vacation in August and there were numerous pictures where I was absolutely appalled at how fat I thought my face looked. So even though sometimes I can see in pictures how crazy I am, other times pictures just seem to reinforce my beliefs.

I once again appreciate the advice and I wish luck to anyone else who has the same horrible illness.

We first combined the sugar with the flour. Then we beat the egg whites in a separate bowl with the cream of tartar until it was thick and had expanded. Then we folded in the flour/sugar. Basically we just followed the recipe. Oh well.
