| i haven't posted on here in quite a while, so hello again everyone. i haven't been entering the calories on here because i found it took me forever. however, i do keep a mental note each day. i started working out (joined curves in february). i go anywhere from 4-6 times/week and i also do the extra workouts they provide (e.g. abs/buns/thighs). i come out sweating and feeling great. i also bought a pedometer around the same time. i don't necessarily set a goal for the day, but it motivates me to move more. besides curves, i now do aerobic every morning bright and early as well. the more intense part lasts from 20-30 minutes, but i also try to keep myself moving during breakfast and while packing lunch etc. by the time i leave the house, i've had anywhere from 60-100 minutes of aerobic steps. the circuit workouts are 30-60 minutes, and the other classes are about 30 minutes. the things is, with all of the movement on any given day, i'm totally not sure what i should be consuming, as i am not able to know the exact calorie output of the exercise. any ideas? i'm 5'6", 158, going on 28. i hope everyone's attempts have been going well! |

| Thanks Paige and Foxylady :) Paige, I haven't looked at your page yet, but I will check it out soon. I'm glad you like my page. I've never really heard of the clean eating thing. I think the idea is good, but I think that for longterm it's not really realistic for myself. I don't want to tell myself that I can never have a cookie again. I just know I can't have 10 everyday. I do try to stick to whole wheat/grain breads, whole wheat pasta, brown rice....I also only drink water or decaf hot tea in general. Sometimes juice if I want it, but that's rare. I have found that I try my best, too, to stay away from artificial sweeteners as they very likely do funky things to our bodies. I started using agave, which is very similar to honey. It's sweet, so you don't need a lot of it. It's also really tasty. I normally use a half teaspoon to enhance the flavor of smoothies, and that's only 10 calories. I do add this into my daily intake. I find now that since I am eating more frequently, but smaller portions, my stomach seems to have shrunk in size, at least internally. Tonight I went to dinner with my parents and ordered two cheese enchiladas. Yes, I know these are not uber healthy. I also know that they were within my calories for the day, especially since I put in a full hour at the gym today and worked my ass off. However, I was only able to eat one. Granted, I did have some of the baked chips, but I was very happy that I didn't feel the need to force myself to finish the meal. One of the hardest parts about eating out is that you can't always figure out exact calories, but I try to be generous with my estimations. |

| Hey all. I haven't posted since some time last week. My weigh-in for yesterday was 158.2, down 1.8 pounds from last Monday. I also started my trial week at Curves. I went yesterday and today. You really do get out of it what you put into it. I was red-faced and sweating, but totally feeling great. My only problem is that I'm not really how to log thos burned calories....I think it varies person to person, and I know put in a hard work out. I guess the exacts aren't as important as the fact that I actually made a step towards a healthier me. I have to decide by Saturday if this is what I want to stick with, though. Anyhow, I appreciate all of your continued support in the form of these posts. Keep up the hard work everyone! |

| What do you compete in? If it's sports, then I think some of the weight might come off. If it's something else, like singing, I wouldn't suggest dropping down to 1500 calories because you still need energy, but maybe you try for 1800? That way you'll have enough to do whatever you need to do, and you'll still feel like you're making an effort without killing yourself doing. And like the post above says, while it hurts to see the scale go up, in the scheme of things 5 or 6 pounds when you know you haven't been focused on losing isn't terrible. You'll get back on track when your mind and body are ready. Good luck! |

| It's hard when you know you've been really good about your choices in general. I had the same setback this weekend. Friday night I went to game night at a friend's place. I actually wrote down the calories for the serving size I had of mini pizza bagels and mozzarella sticks. I was still within my calories for the day. I even had a cookie and knew that was ok. However, as I stood talking with my friend's little sister about her chosen college for next year, I ate 2 more cookies and some of those Tostitos scoops. I felt so sick afterwards, because my body just wasn't used to those things all at once anymore, and definitely not in that amount. Saturday and yesterday I was sick (still am) with some kind of sinus/throat thing, so I wasn't starving, but when I ate I didn't really make the best choices (boxed macaroni and cheese is just the cure sometimes). I was kicking myself and wasn't going to get on the scale this AM, but I was still down 1.8 pounds from last Monday. To be honest, I had weighed myself last Wednesday too and I had made it to 157.8, but with all of the choices I made, I can't complain about going up a half pound. You'll be great, just go back to focusing on better choices :) |

| My parents started watching their intake last week as well. For us, it's a lot more about portion control than terrible foods. We've been doing boneless, skinless chicken breasts my entire life, and I've been on a whole wheat pasta/brown rice kick for quite a while now. I just have issues with amounts, which carries over when the foods aren't so great (ice cream, cake). Anyhow, my mom decided to make a mushroom quiche last week for dinner. We use skim milk, part skim mozzarella, and just a few eggs. Calorie-wise, I figured beforehand that the meal (crust included) actually wasn't too terrible. However, for the actual serving size, I knew I wouldn't be full. I also looked at the other components, such as fat and carbs. When I realized that the entire meal would have almost no fiber and too much of unwanted bits, I chose to have a serving of leftovers from the night before, which I knew provided a healthy serving of protein and fiber etc. My parents ate the meal, and that was fine. It was their choice. For the first time ever, though, my mom understood WHY I was making the choice. |

| We all have bumps on our road to weight loss. I'd say go back to your needed calorie amount tomorrow and don't look back. If you have time, throw in some exercise as well. You'll be ok! | |||

| I love ice cream as well, but I haven't been eating it as much lately. My body's been craving other things. As long as you measure out a serving and limit it to once a day, it can fit into your calories. You could also try getting yourself into a routine where you have it every other day, and on the in-between days have a lower-calorie frozen fruit bar, or something of that nature. The point of changing how you eat is to realize that you really CAN have most anything, as long as it's in moderation. Be strong! | |||

| Right on alley! One of the biggest changes you need to make when losing weight is your outlook on the whole process. I don't know about anyone else, but my head swims with negatives whenever I hear "diet." It really is more of a "watching what you eat" scenario; becoming aware of what you are putting into your body, what it does to you, how it makes you feel. If Slim Fast works for you, that's great. I find that I do relatively well when I eat smaller portions more frequently, whether I call it snacks or meals is irrelevant. For example, I have the Kashi Go Lean Crunchy bars in a couple of flavors - they are only ~150 calories, 3g fat, 5g fiber, 8g protein. They can hold me for a couple of hours. A cup of Cheerios and 1/2 cup of milk is only 140 calories, and again has protein and fiber. Keep looking for foods that fill you up and have some staying power. Best of luck to you. I know you can do it! |

| What I like about counting calories as opposed to other diet programs is that you really do learn more about what you are putting into your body. I try to make choices that are not just lower in fat, but ones that have more fiber and protein and other nutrients. I've only been counting again for just over a week. While I do make a more conscious effort to get healthier types of foods into my body and foods that will "give me more band for my buck," this does not mean that I will never again have a cookie, piece of cake, or dish of ice cream. I just know that on a day when I decide to do that, I will have to make it fit into my calorie allowance I also know that this should not be an everyday thing. | |||

| I used to belong to a regular gym. I really loved it. I used the weight machines, the treadmills and ellipticals, swam laps, and participated in some of the pilates and aerobic classes. I would go for hours at a time. I didn't lose weight, but I was the most fit I'd ever been. For financial reasons, I had to let my membership lapse and then I found myself in a really depressing relationship, during which all we seemed to do was eat. I rocketed up to my highest weight ever. I have since lost that simply through not eating the same quantities and types of foods. Now, though, I really want to work on losing and I know I need to incorporate some physical activity. I am sure I can fit in 30 minutes a few times a week, which is why I was considering Curves. | |||
| Weight Loss | Movie Theater Popcorn... I am so sick | Jan 21 2008 17:45 (UTC) |

| Normally if I get popcorn, I don't get the added butter. I went to the movies with my mom recently and she wanted butter. We shared the bag, but I felt so sick from it. You'd be amazed at the fat and calories the butter adds. This isn't so great for someone with IBS, slow gastric emptying, and horrible reflux. I resolved then that if I do get movie theatre popcorn, I will no longer use the butter. On a brighter note, I recently bought an organic microwave popcorn (Shop Rite store brand, but i'm sure there are others out there) and tried it for the first time yesterday. A serving is only 110 calories and has 5g of fiber. I think if I want popcorn at a movie, the next time I'll make it here and take it with me. Oh yeah, and it was REALLY tasty :) |

| Today's weigh-in - 160. Down a pound from last week. Honestly, I weighed myself other days and was quite happy at one point to be down to 158.8. I know I'll see it again, but it can be a downer to have an upper...I think the problem this weekend was that I had dinner out on both Friday and Saturday. I was careful about amounts (my mom and I shared one meal both nights), but I'm thinking maybe it was the salt and later meal times. I was back on the ball yesterday, and will continue with it today. I'm not normally one to blame my period for cravings and such, but I was wondering if anyone would know the possible range of water retention (in pounds) that can happen in the days leading up to it. I'm due in the next couple of days and was wondering if this could have added to my "gain." | |||

| I know I can't do it for her. I also know that just her getting on that scale yesterday AND telling me the number....my mom doesn't even let the nurses at doctor's office weigh her. In fact, it's been years since she even got onto a scale...if I estimate correctly, it was likely around when my brother got married....he's divorced now and it's more than 10 years ago. It was a huge step for her. She did write things down today, I am just putting them on here. As for eating issues...I can't even begin to explain. She has lots of them, and because she does, I do as well. When I first went to therapy for depression, I mentioned to my mom that maybe she should talk to someone unbiased about things in general. She said she never would. What's interesting is that my mom is a nurse, and even though she does not work in a medical setting, she still has the knowledge. I will ask her if she'd like to join your thread. Congratulations to those of you who are making headway! You should be feeling great about yourselves. I really appreciate all of your comments and suggestions. Thanks! |

| You may not have been bored, but are you under any stress right now? Is what you've been eating for lunch satisfying you? I sometimes find that if I don't eat enough or it's not satisfying, I may come home from work and graze for 2 hours. Stress can do it as well. | |||

| My biggest laugh happened when I was preparing for a massage. I know that a masseuse/masseur often asks questions about problem areas and pregnancy. This is to tailor the experience. However, this chick had been with me for 10 minutes or so talking before she looked me up and down twice and then asked, "Are you pregnant?" I burst out laughing. I said, "Nope. I'm just fat and my fat is in my stomach. I'm not pregnant." She then says, "I have to ask everyone." Well Darling, if you asked everyone, why'd you give me the once-over...that's all I could think of. But it did give me a good chuckle, and still does to this day. |

| I agree with that. I think that she eats too little a lot of the time, but what she's eating isn't necessarily healthy. I'm glad I can work on this with her. Thansk for the reply. | |||

| I'm back on this site just as of this past weekend. I joined last year in June and ended up not keeping up with it because I was really depressed about grad school. Anyhow, I am 27; 5'6"; 161 pounds yesterday morning. I'm thinking it would be good to get down to 135-140, or less if possible. While it's taken me my entire life to begin to feel comfortable with what I look like/weigh (I always ran heavier), my main concern is genetics. My father has type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, high blood pressure etc. My mom is relatively ok, but obese. Obesity runs on both sides of my family. I want to try and get things under better control now so that I don't have as difficult a struggle later in life. Please help! |

| All I can say is that my largest bra size was a 38 ff/g, and even when
I had lost some weight I was still a 36DDD. I was having a lot of
back pain and finally took the plunge and had a breast reduction.
This was NOT instead of weight loss, it was because even when I lost
weight they were still huge and I just couldn't deal. Truthfully,
it was one of the best things I ever did for myself. As for looking less than you weigh, I've always been one of those. The problem is, though, that I carry the majority of my weight right in my belly, like a man (please laugh). I have been asked more than once if I was pregnant. From a four-year-old it was cute..."Do you got a baby in your belly?" I went shopping (bane of my existence) last weekend, though, and the woman asked if I was a size 8. I laughed. She said, "Your legs are so thin." I said, "Yeah, but I don't carry my weight in my legs." |

| I can totally relate to that voice telling me, "Nice try, but it'll never work." The key is to keep pushing that voice to the side. How about you go and buy just 1 pair of pants. See how it feels to wear them and then decide if you want more. It makes sense, too, because when you lose more weight, trying to wear the size 22 or 24 won't work. I have faith in you :) | |||

| Have you tried plugging in your numbers on this site? It will give you an idea of where you should be at and how much to eat in order to fulfill your goal of weight loss. If you could find a bike trail, that might solve some of the hill issues. If you can find a track, you can walk/jog/run. I also bought a jump rope. You'd be surprised at how much you can burn jumping rope. Hope some of this helps. | |||
