The Lounge anyone moved really far from family/friends? Dec 17 2007
18:07 (UTC)

I have done this 4 times!

I moved alone from MA to FL to go to art school ... a year later I dropped out of art school and I moved from FL to New Orleans alone. I lived in New Orleans for two years and left after Katrina and movedto Miami for a few months with my fiance (at the time my parents lived there because my father was on a 2 year assignment), we decided to move back to MA and left 2 days after our wedding. My dad's assignment ended 6 months later and my parents moved back to MA, the whole family was back in MA...and my husband and I moved to Texas!

I hate being away from my family. I liked it when I was younger but now that my neice and nephew are growing up and my whole family is in one state my heart literally aches when I talk to them on the phone. Everytime I have moved except for this most recent move to Texas I have been able to deal with it by trying to keep myself busy with work or school. Also I have always been able to make friends in the new places that I have moved to but here that hasn't happened.

We're moving back in about 4 months, though. Laughing

Where I currently live (Central Texas) it's 50 but the high is 62.

Home (Boston area) 22, feels like 4.

I get to miss a REAL winter this year, we're not leaving Texas until May.

It sucks that your view on police men hasn't been the greatest. I'm sorry. I just hope that you can get a better experience because their occupation isn't just for power hungry buttholes, theres tons of great officers out there.

I really do agree with you!

Edit: yes I know I said I would stay away, but seriously, how could I not respond?

'Roid rage much?

Really all I can say to that is it's sort of scary that someone like you is a cop when you react like that to reading someone's opinion. Like I said, those are my experiences.

23 was a big year for me! It's when I started to actually feel like an adult. I was living in New Orleans and Katrina hit, it actually took something like that for me to realize that I am not invincible! Wink On a good note though, I got married at 23... I turned 24 less than 2 weeks later, though hehe.

Gee, what intelligent logic. Innocent

To be on topic, sorry but I have never known a cop I could/would respect. When I lived in New Orleans I used to buy pot from a guy across the street... I found out a few months later that he got the pot he sold from his cousin who was a New Orleans cop. The cousin would pull people over, shake them down, and then drop it off to his cousin to be sold. Now that might not be a good example since New Orleans has the 2nd most corrupt police force in the US... but still, that man was being paid, in TAX MONEY, and this is what he did all day. I worked on Bourbon St. and would sometimes leave work after 3 AM on weekends, I have personally witnessed sleeping homeless people kicked awake and spoken to like dirt by cops... words I would not repeat on this forum. More? At an old job my supervisor was a semi-retired cop and would pick up occasional details that he never actually went to. He would be paid on both payrolls to be working two jobs at once. A relative of my husband's is a police officer. Not only do they regularly drink and drive in their cruiser but they also do meth on duty. Another cop we know also drinks and drives. I went to high school with someone who is now a cop and was investigated for sexually harrassing women he pulled over. I could go on, but I think I've exhausted my point.

So you guys might say things like "there are always bad apples in every bunch", but in my opinion, "bad apples" flock to jobs that give them a position of authority.

I dunno dude, as I've gotten older and my life has changed I haven't really bothered myself with other people too much. I have two very good friends, one whom I pretty much feel like/act like is family and the other I am very close with but not as close... I have other friends who I socialize with, but honestly I prefer to keep to my small trusted circle (not to say I'm not open to making new friends). I am a very friendly person and can have a conversation with pretty much anyone, but I just prefer to keep people on an "acquaintance" level most of the time... less drama that way.

I laughed a little at all the protein comments... whole wheat pasta has a lot of protein itself!

I like to buy the elbow kind and eat it with onion, garlic, tomato, eggplant, green and red bell pepper, tomato sauce, and nutritional yeast. Mmmm. When I was little my dad used to give us a slice of bread with peanut butter whenever we had Italian food... it's actually a really good combo of flavors!

Can anyone tell me some types of wraps that are vegan?

Thank you.

The LIGHT ones seem to be, I don't know about the regular (haven't seen them).

Edit: I just checked their website and they say that the traditional and mini southwest chipolte contain dairy, but all others are vegan friendly.

i am ABSOLUTELY AGAINST abortion and i support whatever way of protest. I understand you were disturbed by the pictures, but truth is people have to start accepting the reality. Its the same thing with pictures of people in really poor conditions in Africa, or of the war in Irak ... not wanting to see the fact that it exists doesnt make it go away.

Plus, how can anyone be pro-abortion but say those pictures are disturbing? The pictures are exactly what you're supporting by accepting abortions.

I was going to reply to this thread but I honestly can't get past the first post.

Well, one good thing about this apartment we're in now is that it's a quiet building... but there are plenty of bad things...

  • The "kitchen" and "living room" are one room. The "kitchen" is a sink, 2 cabinets, a stove, and a fridge. My counter space is about a 1.5 feet square
  • Ugly, ugly, ugly mismatched outdoor carpeting in the whole place (except for the lovely linoleum in the kitchen area and bathroom, of course).
  • Not enough parking spots
  • A full sized WINDOW in the shower

It can be difficult to make something that adheres to your dietary needs and yet is satisfying to everyone else who may not care the least about calories! And let's face it, turkey and ham are over done and rather predictable. Cooking Light is my friend! Great monthly publication with a HUGE recipe database online!

By "main dish" I assume you're looking for a meat type dish rather than side type dishes like potatoes and veggies? And without knowing your dietary requirements such as no beef, all vegan, etc....I'd suggest this one, which is what I'm making for my family this year. Pear and Cranberry Stuffed Pork Tenderloin. At only 171 calories per slice, this main dish meets my dietary requirements and everyone else will enjoy as well. It's also beautiful! I will have many sides to choose from for everyone. I will opt for the green salad and perhaps some mashed potatoes made with fat free cream cheese and spices whipped in. http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinde r.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=1536 774

I gotta agree with moodymama...robitussin etc. smell nasty, taste nasty, and are more likely to make you poke than cure your cold.

That being said, my friend got totally wasted on a bottle of nyquil once...must've tasted pretty good lol

i have seen some kids "robotrippin"

aka drinking a whole bottle of robotussin. gross. i cant imagine how that would feel.

I've seen people puking neon pink from "robotripping", so stupid. The whole next day they were wicked sick.

When my Pepé had to stop drinking in his late 90's he always used to go "I think I feel a cold coming on" every night as an excuse to take a shot of NyQuil. Hehe.

And to be on topic... I don't take cold medicine anymore (it's all tested on animals), but when I did NyQuil and DayQuil were the WORST.

Sad news...

Best-selling fantasy author Terry Pratchett has been diagnosed with a rare form of early onset Alzheimer's, he said in a message posted to his illustrator's Web site.

In a brief note to fans entitled "An Embuggerance," Pratchett, 59, said he was taking the news "fairly philosophically" and "possibly with a mild optimism."

Well there actually are numerous studies showing the healthy effects of switching your diet to a vegetarian or vegan diet, but there are not enough on lifelong vegetarians or vegans to make any positive claims (yet).

That being said, who cares what other people eat? My doctor and I both agree that my veganism is very healthy... for me, why should anyone else care?
