Thanks Bodyscience! But I am not doing high reps for the major muscle groups. Its just for the loose flesh around the stomach I do the crunches. I am more worried about not bulking up my biceps and triceps.
Fitness What's the deal with heart rate monitors? Do I need one? Do they help? Dec 29 2007

Most of the HR monitors used by consumers these days are Polar HRM's. I own one too that comes with a chest strap and a watch that counts the beat directly from the heart giving you a more approximate calorie burnt scenario. I think most people would agree with Polar being the best of the lot.

I was in a very similar situation and then I started HIIT on my elliptical. This broke my plateau and so far I have been losing consideraby 1-2 pounds a week. Give it a shot and see. There are way many articles to help you figure how to go about doing HIIT. Good Luck!

Hey...the elliptical always over estimates the HR and the calories burnt. Use a Polar HR monitor as its the most closest you can get. There are a lot of threads in regards to this. Give it a search.

You're a grad student. So I presume you're counting the minutes you walk to and fro from your dorm to the classroom vice versa. As Melkor suggested, Rope Jumping w/o the rope is good. Situps is another option. Make sure your drink a lot of water.

Hey Feydruss..you may want to cross check your HR on the elliptical. They way over estimate your HR. I used the Polar HR monitor that shows a 20-30 point deficit from what my elliptical shows. For eg. if my elliptical shows my HR as 169, my polar would show 145 or so.
Fitness Schwinn exercise machines ... Oct 10 2007

I have the Schwinn elliptical machine and bought it 6 months back. I have stopped using the machine as it shows the wrong heart rate. While I was working out, it always used to show a higher heart rate and effectively higher calories burnt. I compared this by wearing a Polar HR monitor and it showed me my correct HR and also I burnt half the calories that the elliptical estimated.

A light effort should be good because supposedly elliptical machines show always a higher number of calories burnt.

Fitness Polar HR monitor is awesome but how accurate? Sep 23 2007

Guys, I have a Polar CS-300. I use it while I jog and also I use it while I bicycle. The reason I bought the Polar was I have an elliptical machine at home and while I was working out I always used to rely on the HR monitor on the machine and it always showed that I was burning within my fat burning zone or higher. When I bought my Polar to test whether both are accurate, my elliptical machine was still showing I was burning in my fat zone but my polar showed I was still way below my fat zone!!!   From then on I have stopped working out on my elliptical machine and have started to jog outside and I rely a lot on my Polar.

CC takes into consideration an average of 1.5 pounds a week weight loss. So if you loose more, there would be a big gap between your current trend and the ideal trend. Hope this helps.

Hey, I use olive oil for cooking too. Its a fabulous substitute to the other fatty oils in the market. Also I stopped eating rice and I eat chappatis instead. I sometimes binge on rice during my cheat days. I make sure I don't go over my sodium limits as they bloat you up big time. But now my parents are here and I am not counting calories, but I exercise. :-)

Fitness Is 5 sets of 15 reps (3 times) bad for Biceps? Jul 15 2007

Thanks for the eye-opening response tgpish. I did read both the articles and one thing that I have learnt is that cardio and weight training is important for fat loss. Considering my goal to be fat loss because I still have those flesh hanging off, preserving the muscle is also very vital.

I am going to change my routine from today. I have time for 5 days of exercise. I will still do the same exercises but with 3 sets of max 9-12 reps and the last set upto failure.

All this while I have been lifting weights upto 15 reps thinking all the time that more you do, more its good for the muscles interms of bulking up, but then the article makes a lot of sense.

Thanks tgpish.

I am not an advanced lifter. I used to lift weights on and off. And please I don't want to be like gregg valentino. I just want to get a decent body.

giggle_puppy, for some reason a warmup for me shoots up my HR to 165-170 even when I am going low on my elliptical. And then it stabalizes for the most part between 145-150 and then towards the end it comes down to 135-130.

I burn about 700 cals on an elliptical for 33 minutes. And then I burn an additional average 300 cals lifting weights for 90 mins with rest.

I am happy to read "tbds" response. I just hope there is no such thing as a starvation mode. "juicebox", you might want to check your sodium intake. Too much of that would just bloat you up big time.
Weight Loss drinking enough water? Jul 14 2007

As far as everyone suggests you need to have atleast half your weight. If you are 150 pounds, you need to have atleast 75oz of water. If you're getting dehydrated, you need to add more to that.

I use 35 for the dumbell curl, 55 for the barbell and 25-30 for concentration. Is that bad? someone was telling me that it would over work the biceps.
