Missed reporting yesterday but had my Pink Lady and had another one today for a total of 12.  DWF thanks for the info about how good apples are for us ... I had forgotten how good they taste too until your challenge.

Had a crisp Pink Lady for snack today ... total is 7 and I'm feeling good!  Not sure if it's just a mental shift/lift or if I am actually feeling healthier and stronger ... whatever it is I hope it lasts.

Just had another Pink Lady which I shared with my doggie.  Deliciously sweet and crunchy.  This is a new kind of apple for me ... anyone in the US familiar with these?  I'm in Ontario, Canada and the bag says US.

I bought them because they are smaller and intended for children because of the size.  I'm hooked!

I will:

  • continue the apple a day challenge
  • walk 5000 steps on my pedometer daily (at least)
  • buy some new clothes with non-elastic waistbands and in some new bright colours to celebrate spring (which we desperately need here ... another huge snow and ice storm on the way for this evening thru tomorrow morning)
  • try new foods - getting tired of the ones I keep cooking and DH, while not complaining, is suggesting some changes
  • add another repetition to my weight routine - am doing 3 reps of 10 and will now go to 4 reps of 10 and hopefully by the end of the month go to 12
  • celebrate that I feel better, am off some meds and looking forward to a slowy shrinking body

I'm happily munching on a Pink Lady apple ... slightly smaller than my usual Gala or Granny Smith, but crunchy and sweet.

Love this challenge ... reminds me to eat an apple a day.

Please count me in too.  I just had a Gala apple - shared a piece with one of my dogs who loves it too!  Gala's are my favourite followed closely by Granny Smiths.  I bought a big bag and am eager, ready and chomping at the ... apples!

Oh, I also had a Gala apple yesterday too so please put me down for 2.

Thanks for the support - I have now left the "pity party" and am getting on with positive thoughts.  Dad is doing somewhat better too.

Great news Sun and loved the post.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Hi everyone ... saw my name in Rachels posting and had to respond. Have  been llurking but not posting because I'm back on steroids (like Angie) for asthma.  So discouraged - weight is up to 188 already and I fear where it will end up.  Also I'm not to get too out of breath exercising so have to walk slowly on the treadmill.

To add to my frustration my 94 year old Dad is hospitalized with a major infection which appears to be responding to antibiotics but after a week he's very weak and somewhat confused due to medication.  Hoping to get him back to his long care home soon, which would certainly lift his spirits.  I haven't been able to visit him because I somehow contracted pink eye and have to be away from both my parents for 14 days.  Life sucks right now!

Oh well, the sun is out for the first time in ages - we had over a foot of snow, on top of what we already had, but it looks so pretty.

Long post ... sorry.  Good luck to everyone on weigh-in day.

Edited for spelling mistakes.  Can't seem to do anything right lately!

Here's an old family recipe.

Saute 1 cup finely chopped onion in a bit of olive oil; place in 9" pie plate (I put a few fine bread crumbs on bottom of plate ).  Add diced cooked meat (ham, chicken, etc) over if you wish.  Blend 4 eggs, 1 16oz can evaporated milk (can use evaporated skim milk) pinch salt, pinch cayenne.  Pour over onion/meat combination.  Top with 3/4 cup grated cheese.  Bake 350F 30-40 minutes till set and golden.

Depending on what I have on hand I've added thinly sliced mushrooms and other finely chopped veges like red/green peppers etc.

Foods Question for the Lactose Intolerant Jan 24 2008

I'm lactose intolerant and purchase Lacteeze or Lactaid milk so that is easy.  Don't seem to have a problem with yogurt but do with most cheese.  I usually chew 3 lactaid tablets with the first mouthful of foods like pizza or cheese topped items or if I don't know what the ingredients are - there's milk lurking in many foods as I've unfortunately found out the hard way in the past.

I think there's also lactaid drops you can add to your regular milk and in cooking but I've never tried them.

Our new resident is a squirrel who is no longer in the house. We have been putting peanuts out for them this year and didn't realize they would like to house themselves with us.  There has been a thorough examination of our attic and two humane traps set outside.  The question is, how did they get in; the service is guaranteed so if we have a recurrance it will be taken care of.  Since it's winter and snowing steadily they were unable to check the roof outside  to see if any shingles are missing.  Also we live in a semi-detached house so it could have come through from their side.

Fingers crossed that this was a one time squirrel visit and it will not come back.

Eeek !!! Critters in the wall ... extremely cold outside and for the first time in many many years of owning this house we have something sharing our space.  Called for help and they are coming tomorrow morning so have to live with scratching in the walls and cats going crazy tonight.  Oddly enough the dogs are not interested at all.  Wish us luck Beachers ... just want this over.  Won't sleep a wink tonight.  Also costly to have professionals help but I want to close up the entry so need to know "who" it is and how they got in

Doing well with exercise, treadmill and weights, but not weighing because I don't need bad news.  Pants feeling looser so may be brave this Thursday.

Down to 183 today - at least I'm going in the right direction finally.  Have upped my exercise because I'm feeling so much better so am hoping for a better result next week.

Rachael - metabolism sure changes after menopause!  Since menopause I am more active, eating better food and portions and my weight barely moves.  However, I will persevere because I hate how I look and how old I feel when illness hits.  Certainly I am my father's daughter, physically taking after him and his family; Mom at 88 looks 70 and is extremely fit and petite.  However, all Dad's family lived well into their 90's - Dad is 94 and although wheelchair bound and physically frail his mind is sharp and he loves a good conversation and debate so I guess all is not lost!

We are in the middle of a January thaw - temps mild, snow all gone and huge wind storm yesterday.  Snow is forecasted so back to normal January in a few days.

Happy New Year to all my SB friends!  Hopefully you will still allow me to gain motivation from you though I'm not a SBeacher.

Way to go Molly!  How wonderful for you to reach the 200s at the end of 2007.  You are truly an inspiration and I have tried several new foods due to your suggestion ie Almond Breeze, English Muffins, Egg Creations (like Beaters), and am concentrating on adding lots more veggies in 2008.  So proud of you and your continued efforts - wish I had some of your determination!

Jayne, I am so happy for you that once again your Angel Alice is motivating you - this time to walk.  Take it slowly, don't push yourself too hard but keep moving.  Having a walking buddy is the best way to go.

Angie, good luck with keeping off steroids; I'm just weaning off a session for asthma and have gained ... eek ... 8 pounds!  Also because I've been more sedentary I feel flabby and fat.  DH gave me some new hand weights for Christmas and I've been using them as I can and hope to get back to walking today.

Happiness and wishes for motivation to all of you!

Kathryn

Molly, your Corey sounds a lot like my Bichon, Abby.  She will sit there with her legs crossed tight looking out, and refuses to go out, unless I take her out and carry an umbrella.  Then if she needs to do her business she expects me to follow her 'round and 'round until she finds just the perfect spot and pose.

I had to hide that bone for tomorrow mom.  pic 1

Please Mom, another Beggin Strip  pic 2

Change of topic.... Molly, I see your mention of Red Pepper hummus.  Could I get the recipe for it.  I am always looking for something for my snacks.  I love regular hummus, but I am afraid it will get boring before I get to the end of this.

Fransen - I live in Canada too (Ontario) and get Summer Fresh brand of Red Pepper Hummous and President's Choice Red Pepper Dip (both great tasting) from  a Loblaws affiliate (Fortino's here in my neck of the woods).  Hopefully you have a Loblaws or affiliate in your area too.  Both are worth trying.  Summer Fresh also has lots of other flavoured hummous to try.

Love the pics of Corey - have two dogs myself, one a black border collie/blue heeler (Australian cattle dog) mix and the other a white border collie with a beautiful half black face - with one eye white eyelashes and the other black.  So cute and so bad.  They are our girls ... our two legged adult kids are boys.

Hi Fransen.  I'm 61, newly retired (almost 8 months) and loving it.  I've struggled with my weight for 9 years (had surgery) and find it so hard to achieve results.  It seems to me that the older I get the slower my metabolism is, along with medications that are necessary for me also causing weight gain.

I live in Ontario, Canada and right now outside exercise is so not appealing to me - lots of snow and cold, so I walk on my treamill, do a walking DVD (Leslie Sansome - not sure of spelling of her last name) and use stretchy bands.  So far I haven't lost much weight (18 lbs in the past year) but I have lost some inches and certainly feel better.

Kansasgal - so happy to hear about your hubby's health.  I'm on a short term dose of prednisone (7 days) and hope for the problem to clear up in that time.  If it doesn't I'll have to go on for probably a month which then means weaning off gradually.  Hate to think of the weight gain if that happens but one does need to breathe.  Also have not been as active because of the shortness of breath but am trying to move as much as I can - mostly walking and using the stretchy band.

Kris - we are expecting a storm this weekend too, supposed to start Saturday evening and go through Sunday.  So difficult with holiday get togethers planned and being looked forward to and then the weather interferes.  Hope they are predicting incorrectly and we all just get a sprinkle of snow.

I have not baked anything this year and am keeping veggies cut up and ready to eat (also keep some in my purse in case of buffet weakness!).

My family has trembling hands which was diagnosed as Familial Tremens after discounting Parkinsons.  My Dad and brother are worse than I am and my sister and other brother not affected at all.  I've never connected food to the severity of the problem and will certainly start to track for the symptoms.  I also have a bit of imbalance problem but put that down to a medication I take for a chronic condition that lists imbalance as a side effect.  Interesting information - thanks.

We are freezing up here - cold, storm started at 11:00 am (just like Tuesday) and it's snowed steadily since.  this is an unusual amount of snow for us at this time of year.

Because of asthma problems I'm on prednisone therefore not going to weigh for a while due to side effects (weight gain, moon face etc).  Already my jeans are tighter and my face looks bigger to me.  Oh well, this is just another slice of life that will be over soon and I'll be back on track.
