Thanks sooo much for the challenge, I didn't make my goal but at the very least I didn't gain, and I'm really excited about a June challenge!  The last week I've been south beaching it (sorta) and that has really helped.  I really really need to get back into exercising now.

Awesome work gingerkabureck and everyone here!  Very inspirational.

Wow, amazing gingerkabureck!  What are you doing - just calorie count or also exercise.

Sigh, I was bad and only exercised twice this week, so back up. But despite wanting to hide :) I'm posting to make myself be accountable.

Wow, I'm really excited, I've been trying sooo hard to stick to this after actually gaining for about 5 months.  My big motivation is having a calender on my desk with the weight I would like to be by the end of each week and knowing I have to log it.  Yay, alhumdulilah, made my first goal.  For me, sticking to my calories has been working and also *trying* to go to the gym.  Thanks so much for the challenge!

haley_2008 I noticed that!  Yay and wow, I'm amazed at your transformation and the fact that you seem to be having so much fun with this.  I started at about 177 and was down to 150  about 6 months ago, but unfortunately been back up.  Thanks though, I think when I did my first post a few minutes ago I was bummed out but I read your posts about *erm* Tales from the Gym and I was cracking up.  Thanks for sharing and letting us all enjoy.

I love going to the gym cos the classes are great, but wow, some people apparently have the foresight of a runway model when dressing for the gym, I'm lucky if gym pants aren't tie-die'd with bleach stains Embarassed.  So, deep breath in, seeing everyone here and you who have been sticking well to this and really noticed results, I'm going to push myself and really give it my best.  At the very least I'll have fun working out and feel more self-control and develop better eating habits by controlling calories.  And hopefully being a positive eating example for my daughter.

I've been trying to stick to 1200 and I can control myself great in the day time, it's in the evening when i'm cooking for my family that I overdo it and end up eating pretty late like 8 to 11.

Wow, I thought it was just me.  I had the same thing happening to me.

I've been working out about 6 days a week at the gym and well, not exactly counting calories

5 ' 1" - hovered between 160 and 160 for almost a month.  Then last week I didn't got to the gym at all and didn't count my calories, and I was down to 157.  This week I've been going to the gym and counting calories, and I'm at 162. Arghghgh.  I was so excited to finally understand the whole equation:  burn y calories  - eat x calories = extra calories lost divided by 3000 = pounds lost.  But now that doesn't seem to be working and don't like not understanding because it makes me feel like I don't know what to do to make this work.

Thanks much that really help.  That's what I love about this forum and this method, it's an intelligent, active process.

And it also answers my other question because I go to the gym about 5 days a week and burn 300 - 600 calories.  I was wondering if I should eat those many more calories or will those be part of my deficit, so now I know that I  need to make sure that I keep track of my burning and eating as accurately as possible and stick close to the max of 1000 cal deficit a dayCool.  Thanks for the great advise.  Enjoy!

EDIT: Thanks much and great to meet you all.  They do work out a lot, good point.  Hehehe, y'know a friend of mine's husband helped to motivate her by giving her  $100 for every 10 pounds  lost and it did help :-) for a while!

Wow, I was  doing so well the whole day yesterday - I'm doing a combo controlling calories and trying the south beach phase 1 for 2 weeks.  But then my relatives were visiting and we went out to a Chinese buffet for dinner - waaaaaa - too much temptation.  I tried my best to stay away from the breads and stuff but finally had to have some of the desert, teriyaki sauce, etc...  Ok, I'm going to be really good from now, and being part of this challenge and knowing I have to post my weight here should hopefully help me keep on track.

I've kinda been stalling at 0.5 lb loss a week, and I really need a big loss to inspire me.  My wedding reception is this summer so I really need to lose at least 30 pounds before July.  Is 10 lb a month really doable?  I was watching the biggest losers yesterday and they are losing like 4 to 7 lb a week, yeesh.

I recently discovered mandarin orange flavor sparkling water beverage.  It's Sam's Choice Clear American so available at most Walmarts. Zero calories and relatively inexpensive. I was really into Mountain Dews and couldn't find a good substitute, but this water is sweet versus the usual bitter aftertaste.  I'm not sure the nutritional value though, but I don't feel guilty about drinking a big bottle of this versus the mountain dew.

I know I'm the kind of person who has a lot of trouble with self motivation so I joined a gym with great classes.  I know this isn't for everyone but for me it really gets me going knowing that I have a fun class like zumba to look forward to or kick boxing.  And during the class I'll adjust how active I am so at least I'm doing something active but maybe not leaping around as I would usually.... and of course the endorphines at the end make it all worth it :) So I would suggest that either join a class or try the excercise videos you like best for this time.  Just a thought, and enjoy!

Ok, my super ambitious goal is to actually stick to my 1200 calorie a day - for one month!!!!! Bismillah (starting with the God's name!) Here we go!  Best of luck to all with their goals - and we'll see how well I did by March 7.

Small changes - hmm, cutting down on soda or switching to diet.  Unfortunately, I loooove Mt. Dew and I cannot find a good tasting diet substitute for it.  Any suggestions?

Really excited to try this with support.  I've been on a plateau for about 2 months and really want to break into the 140's.  It really makes a difference with support so I'm going to give it a try again.

Getting back to the gym at lunch.  Healthy habits I'd like to start are at least 30 minutes of treadmill time at least 5 days a week, and drinking at last 5 glasses of water (being realistic cos I love the diet soda).  And of course logging my eating every day (makes a big difference).

thanks and best of luck to all!!!!!

I haven't taken measurements, I will try that.  I have noticed that jeans I had back when I was a size 6 are fitting again so that is good.  I'm definately eating enough, and then some (with the holidays --- so many snacks around the office).  I'm 5ft 1inches so I'm hoping to get down to 120.  thanks for the advice and hopefully the scale will show results soon too :)

As-salam-ualakum, Ramadan Mubarik. I was wondering how to manage the diet during Ramadan. It is going to be hard to manage going out for Iftar but inshahallah I am going to preplan (got plenty of time during the day right :) ) so that I can see how many calories I have and how much of each thing I should eat to maintain my calorie count.

Well, I'm going to try. Plus I just joined a gym and I am going to try to do the more weight training classes or light workout, so help my body stay out of starvation mode. Any suggestions?

We'll see how it goes inshahallah. Have a great and blessed month. Peace and joy to everyone!

Winterzlove,

Thanks so much.  Great advice and very doable!  Great job losing 100lbs and also being so positive.  I finally think I've found something that makes sense and is a way of life rather than a diet plan.  take care and enjoy!
Weight Loss How Many Calories Per Day? Jul 17 2007

I'm curious as well, on how to rate my activity level.  I'm a programmer so I spend 8 to 10 hours a day sitting at a computer, very sedantary.  During the school year I don't do much activity in the evening either.  But this summer my neices are here and we end up either going to the park or pool for an hour each afternoon.

Is that enough activity to put me into the very light category rather than sedantary?

I started doing around 1200 calories and in the first three weeks lost about 9 pounds.  But now, even though I'm doing about the same, I have not lost any weight in the last two weeks.  Could I be undereating and therefore slowing down my metabolism?  Quite confused and any advice would be appreciated.
Weight Loss What triggered your weight gain? Jun 19 2007

I've been pretty roller coaster.  I was an extremely thin child.  I hated to eat (crying if I had to eat more than a slice of bread) and then at about age 9 I discovered candy and soda...put a lot of weight on and didn't take part in many sports.  College made things much worse and I was up to 150.  Lost it and went down to 118 in the last two years of college.

But then I began working and discovered going out to lunch everyday with coworkers and getting a paycheck.  Went up to 150.  I really began gaining after having my child.  When she began eating solids I would eat my meal and then finish her left overs.  I started going to the gym at lunch time and that seemed to work really well for me, I was down to the 140's.  But then my work schedule changed and I couldn't go to the gym any more and was too lazy to work out at home.  That coupled with a very sedantry life of computer work, took my up to 177.

I'm at the highest I've ever been now and I really want to change.  This site is very exciting because it makes sense, take the number of calories you can eat and then divide it by 5 or 6 so that you end up having 6 small meals through out the day.  I think I am committed to this.  Now I just need to commit to exercising consistently and I know, God willing, I can do it!  Here we go!  Bismillah.
