| Weight Gain | I have more issues with eating now :( | Aug 17 2008 00:15 (UTC) |

I, too, am in the exact same boat. There are those people that are trying to shove ice cream down my throat as I've become more open with these food difficulties. Then there are those people who think they're dieting by eating ridiculously small and unhealthy amounts of food. I seriously just scowl when I see someone I know doing that. After everything I've been through and all the things I've learned about nutrition, that's the last thing they want to be doing. My weight gain also revolves around putting on muscle with the help of a bunch of weight lifting and cardio. If you want to see improvements, you really have to increase the amount of protein in your diet. Lean meats, tons of fish, legumes, soy protein. I definitely swear by protein supplements in smoothies. In order to put all of the protein intake to good use, I take body conditioning classes that involve tons of lifting, lunges, core workouts, etc. I've found that it's all about the protein and weight lifting (and if you're aiming for a solid core like me- cardio is KEY) As for the mile time, I wouldn't really dwell on the speed as much as the amount. Just keep the heart rate up and keep going! Good luck |

oh wow this was definitely the post i needed to read as I was looking at all the weight gain topics. I was justttt reflecting on how crappy I'm feeling and that putting on muscle as my way of gaining weight was a big mistake. I was just thinking about how I felt and looked in the past; and wanting to go back to that- but after reading this I'll think twice. I feel gross at the moment, but as you said, just bite the bullet for now. Thanks for the motivating words! |

As dumb as it sounds, it works so well. Its the fundamental part of everything you do in pilates and yoga. As long as you keep the belly tucked in while doing the poses and the different movements, you would see results. |

Good for you for deciding to recoverr! I've found that using protein powder in smoothies is a big help on the way to recovering. One thing you don't want to do is just jump all in at one and eat until you feel sick. Protein powder has helped me ease into things a lot easier and its definitely something you need if you want to be strong. I personally prefer gaining muscle rather than just eating and remaining sedentary. You should exercise so you can put the protein to good use, but make sure you just compensate with adding extra calories that day too. GOOD LUCK! |

i lovee them although sometimes they can be really dryy. there isn't too much taste to them, but they're good to snack on. But of course the downside is you can only have so much because they're pretty calorie dense. You could definitely find them at trader joes or i've even seen them in the huge containers at costco. |

Ughhh I know exactlyyyy what you're going through. My parents are the exact same way and will never be on the same page as me in terms of understanding what I'm going through. Everyone, even outside my family, thinks recovering and gaining a few pounds is as easy as 1, 2, 3. "Just eat a bowl of ice cream!" It's especially hard for my dad to understand. My mom has become more assertive by trying to control what I eat and how little I exercise (she barely lets me go to pilates). But every so often my dad will crack and just go on a rampage about how the two of them are going to send me away to a hospital and I'll never get to finish my senior year. Just the other day my mom was saying how she doesn't like to cook anymore because of my difficult eating habits (im strictly healthy) and she gets so frustrated with my stubbornness. I, too, have managed to gain a few pounds and have been trying my absolute best. Nothing is enough in their eyes though. Every so often though I fluctuate and they flip. What I've learned is that you just have to go with the flow and actually, as awful as it sounds, just conform to what your family wants for you for a little while. Even if it doesn't sound like the right thing to do for you, it shows them that you're willing to listen to their ideas and that you trulllllyy want to recover to their standards. Even though I'm still waiting, parents come around and loosen up eventually. I definitely know how you feel about the restriction of exercise and I've been thinking about it this way: if I can't exercise now, I'll gain that weight that they want and then I can comfortably exercise when I want and tone up again. That's my main concern because I don't just want to be gaining fat, but rather toning up and making the weight gain in muscle. You really just have to make a compromise with your mom so you can create a balance between the two of you. I hope everything works out. Good luck! |

| Weight Gain | Hello to all!! | Jul 26 2008 08:10 (UTC) |

Congratulations and keep up the good work!! I was just in Greece for a couple weeks and everyone was worried that I was going to spoil my time there by restrict but it's empowering to prove everyone wrong and let yourself indulge. It's an amazing place and can only be fully enjoyable when you try all of that delicious food. Not to mention, its impossible to feel guilty when you eat all of eat since the Greeks have the some of the healthiest diets in the world. As for advice for gaining-I'd try some frozen yogurt (they have those places that serve organic healthy ones). The plain flavors might just remind you of the thick yogurt in Greece:] Good luck! |

I started to read some of these and seriously started to tear up. I'm sure I have fairly better memories but there's this simple one that sticks out for some reason: I was going out to my friends house one night (I had already had a good dinner and my little evening snack of homemade trail mix) and I brought these leftover homemade cookies for my friend's mom. (By the way, they are a very Japanese family) When I gave her the cookies she offered me one of these red bean Japanese pastry candy things and I reallly surprised myself because awhile ago I would've politely declined. However I took one, not having a clueeeee what was in it or the nutritional information. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite as I hung out with my friends; and I didn't even feel remotely guilty afterwards. It felt amazing to feel normal that night. |

| Health & Support | I'm becoming bulimic. Someone please help me. | Jul 23 2008 03:50 (UTC) |

I know this sounds ridiculously easier said than done, but honest to god, you need to stop while you're ahead. I know how scared you must be and you're not sure what's going to happen. I'm at the same height as you and I dropped 30 pounds. I still wasn't happy and bulimia (which inevitably turned into anorexia) has single handedly ruined my life. I'm getting better but its suchhhhhh a longg and tedious ordeal that consumes my thoughts every second. If only I'd known then what I know now. I just have to say that it is soooo not worth it. Not to mention it kills your insides and puts soooo much strain on your heart. You'll hurt yourself so much more in the long run if you don't stop now. And to be honestly, bulimia doesn't even work effectively, as horrible as that sounds. It took anorexia to kick in for me before I actually shed pounds. I have to say thats when life hits rock bottom and you should never have to be at that point. I just really want to beg in front of you right now or something for you to stop... Try to focus on changing your eating lifestyle and eating foods that you don't need to feel guilty about and throw up. I know for me, I never liked the feeling of being really full so like kittysaysmeow said, just keep snacking healthily throughout the day to satisfy yourself. You have to get your mind off of this habit. I wish you the best of luck and hope things start to work out. |

Ironically I was justtttt debating in my mind over my weight gain as I stumbled on this post. Every time I lay in bed and think how much better I could've eaten that day I just tell myself how well I'm going to do the next day. However after every meal or after I see the scale go up a pound I can't help but feel a little upset. I have no problem with actually eating my food anymore- but, like you, I cannotttt grasp my mind about the gaining concept. I definitely relate and I just keep taking it in day after day to see if I can try a little harder. I don't know about you, but I'm not even allowed to exercise anymore so it feels like all I'm gaining is fat (even though in my mind I know I'm not fat); and I just wish I could do some cardio and gain all my muscle backk. I miss it. I'm a heath freak too so to make myself feel better about gaining, I just eat a little more than regularly, but try to keep it healthy at the same time. People are alwaysssss telling me to just eat ice cream or a hamburger but they obviously don't understand how much that would mess up my thinking. I hope you have better luck than I do. |

i think you should be proud of yourself, first of all, that you've come to a realization by yourself that you need help. You definitely have more courage than I did and it took my hesitant ex-bf to tell his mom to tell my parents about it. You've already done so well already by addressing the issue and having the DESIRE to get better. Bulimia is soo hard and I know that you don't want to have the feeling of having a full stomach or eating an actual meal. I can't stress how sorry I am that you'r parents aren't being more supportive; but I admire that you had the strength to tell them about your issues. What you need to do now, I think, is seek help on your own. Whether its through your school or doctor, you need to be independent if your parents wont understand- even though that must be hard enough to think about right now. good luck! |

I'm not sure how much protein you're looking for but i swearrrr by larabars which don't contain anyyyy soy and no peanuts (there are different flavors and each of them contain like 4 ingredients so you know what you're eating) and have like 5-7 grams of protein. They are perfect for weight gaining too: 200-220 calories |

I only read your post and didn't really skim the others but-
I'm pretty much the same- 5'5'' with a tiny bone structure and really small wrists; and at 108 I'm being forced to get to 115. I really don't think 115 is necessary for me, but 100 is definitely nottttt okay. |

ahhh I knowww!!! I'm trying to gain weight as well and I'm finding it much more harder than losing. People are real supportive that I'm putting so much effort into trying but the just don't understand! I've actually been told (by people who know me so well already) that I should just go have a big mac or something everyday and i'll gain like THAT! yeah sureeeeee. They really think its the easiest thing in the world and literally think I'm nuts when I fail to gain. i can totally empathize with what you're talking about because when someone like you or me hears thats kind of stuff from other, you can't help but think, ARE YOU SERIOUS?! I just wanted to say I understand the difficulty too... |

| not going to lie, you have to freeze them for over 24 hours. its soooo frustrating but the result is worth it. Unfortunately I precut and froze about 2 dozens bananas before I left the country for 2 weeks (hoping upon return i'd have delicious bananas to come home to) only to come back to see that they were black and almost fermenting into a syrup... i threw them away sadly. | |||

| do not leave the peel first of all; it makes it a million times harder to get off after freezing.
i like to slice them up and put them in a FREEZER PROTECTING ziploc bag. if you dont put them in a cold enough freezer or the right plastic bag, the bananas go bad real fast. enjoy!- its 10x better than ice cream |

| god i cant even tell you how much i feel for you right now. Unfortunately I've also learned that that scale wont reach 110 just by those calories alone- as hard as I tried too. I know exactly how you feel and what you are experiencing right now. My parents, too, have forbade me from exercising completely and the next step is hospitalization. It's not even a threat anymore. They've picked out places, doctors, and everything and its the most depressing thing in the world since i really do want to get better. I was really proud of myself too when I ate a million times better when we vacationed, only to learn that I flat out maintained 107. They're aiming or 115 however, and i'm dreading those mom weigh-ins. What I find helps is to eat 5 actual meals a day that consist of smaller foods with high calories (as opposed to people who eat 5 mini meals a day to lose weight). Right now i'm in the same position as you are, but at the time that was helping me if i was honestly consistent and determined enough to stick to it. I'm not sure how many calories would be right for you, but get as much as possible with the smallest amounts of food because then you dont feel as sick. Good Luck | |||
| Weight Gain | Anorexic... Help | Jul 02 2008 06:25 (UTC) |

| First off, i know exactly how you feel.
I've just realized that you YOURSELF have to WANT to recover. Everything around me is becoming ruined. all my relationships and its just draining the happiness out of me. it affects my parents so much and its just recently hit me that i have to take charge because the next step is hospitalization. its really come to that point where there's no other option so i, too, have decided its time to take charge and overcome the mental block of all of this.
to ease into things with your metabolism you should just take it one step at a time. what i'm doing instead of just packing on all the calories at once is introducing a different food from a food group (ie: bread, yogurt) and put it in a meal. if you slowly do things, no matter what the food really is, you'll start to adjust and i'm hoping i can stay adjusted. if you're still worried about messing up metabolism, i'm finding it might be best to 'trick' your body by eating really calorie-dense foods that are small portioned (nuts, supplement powders). i'm finding that part hard to do, but it might be of some help for you. i really hope things get better for you; i know exactly how you feel and how much you want things to get back to normal. i wish it could be that way right now too. good luck |

| Weight Gain | Is it okay to use Bars for snacks throughout the day? | Jun 07 2008 07:35 (UTC) |

| i second the larabars
if i ever feel i cannot meet caloric needs for the day, I alwaysss end the night with a larabar or a jocalat bar (same company except there's cocoa in these:]) there are sooo many delicious flavors and you can feel good about eating them too because there's on average about 3 natural ingredients in all of them. trader joes has them and I always go to our local health stores, which have an even wider selection to choose from. |
